Is anime fandom a friendly space for a Malaysian?

Fandom refers to another type of culture (subculture) that is based on communal identification among people who have the same shared interest on media objects (Tsay-Vogel & Sanders 2015).

In other words, fandom is a social community that shares the same interest in certain media-related things such as movies, anime, sports, artists and many more.

Since fandom is a broad topic, I will focus on discussing anime fandom only (which I myself is a big fan of it). Therefore, this blog post will discuss if anime fandom has a friendly environment for Malaysians to freely express themselves.

Anime conventions in Malaysia

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, anime conventions were organized across Malaysia annually. Let’s begin by analysing Malaysian behaviours and their intentions in attending the anime conventions.

According to Yamato (2016), 89% out of 585 respondents agreed that participating in conventions provides various benefits to them. Additionally, 82% respondents aim to meet their friends in conventions and 43% respondents believed that making new friends is one of the benefits in joining anime conventions.

From the statistics, most Malaysians that attend anime conventions seek to meet their friends and make more new friends that share the same interest as them. However, some of them experienced socially marginalized feelings due to their interest in anime.

To relate, some interviewees said that people deemed them as immature and some experienced prejudice whereby their family and friends discriminate them for their unique hobby which is different from others (Yamato 2016).

Anime fandom presence in social media platform

Besides, anime fandom also has influence in social media platforms as some Malaysian Facebook pages use anime references on their post.

For example, Domino’s Pizza Malaysia used anime references based on the characters in Jojo Bizarre Adventure and adopting its famous catchphrase “Oh? You’re approaching me?” into their phrase in the post.

As a result, many people in the comment section give positive feedback to the post whereby people love the anime reference and also reply back with other anime memes.

Another example can be seen from the Malaysian meme page called MGAG. They recently made a post about a lecturer that wears a Dragon Ball’s shirt which looks similar to Master Roshi from the anime Dragon Ball.

Similarly, most of the comments show positive reaction to the post without any insult or hostile remarks. Therefore, it can be observed that the anime fandom is widely accepted among Malaysians in social media especially Facebook.

Final thoughts

To conclude, anime fandom do have a friendly environment for Malaysians especially among those who share the same interest as them and those who know about the presence of the anime fandom in social media.

However, anime fandom might face negative perception to those who are unfamiliar with anime cultures and those who dislike something that is different from the norm. It is probably due to the traditional Asian culture which refrain others from being different or to freely express themselves in the society.
