I purchased a 3D Novi Star Head file from here and did some resizing and modifying to make it work with Rainbow High/Shadow High bodies and I also made eyes and equipped it with a way to hold them in place.
Anyways, I got permission from the seller to sell prints of the heads so I'll be adding them to my Ko-Fi soon.
I'll be putting her on a matching body tonight, but in the meantime here are some previews.
I already have plans to make some alternate sculpts of the head when I have time.
My plan is to paint the pupil-less eyes solid black with an iridescent sealant so I can lean into the "Grays" look.

Hmm so turns out I have a lot of feelings about intellectual property and corporate ownership.
The live action reviews are messy because they've made assumptions about what is canon. I've been through reboots before so I'm used to Eras of Canon (like the Star Wars extended universe or Trek timelines)...
Garrett Sander is the creator of Monster High but he didn't get to decide what was canon at the time due to corporate and now he's not employed by Mattel and has no say over the characters in G3.
Put simply, Clawdeen isn't a lesbian in G1 canon because corporate never allowed it and G3 canon will be whatever Mattel decides even if it goes against a character design basic by Sanders because he didn't truly own any intellectual property created during company employment and has now been shut out of it (probably with no royalties whatsoever).
I've long felt this type of IP ownership is disgusting. Carter Bryant was struggling to pay hospital bills while his creation: Bratz, not revamped, the literal original designs, are selling like hotcakes because he doesn't technically own his work.
And while the monster high tag fights over whether Cleo/Deuce or meangirl!Torelei is "canon", I'm just getting more and more annoyed that "canon" was never Sander's to decide and isn't going to pay his bills. He's not even being sent the repros of his original designs. Mattel can do whatever they want with the Monster High characters and worse they can milk it without the creator getting a dime.
So that's my contribution to the discourse: Please look beyond the characters at how the sausage is made.
If fans decide to campaign for anything from Mattel, please can it be to allow their artists royalties on their work.

redesigns your Emerald McNabb redesigns your Emerald M-
I focused on the safety pins and chains on his jacket and used those to make him look more punk, rather than looking like a recoloured River Kendall. also we need dreadlocks on a boy doll already come on MGA, you're so cringe

thought this was interesting, particularly the acquisition of pixel zoo part.
for a while it seemed like pixel zoo was producing animated content for fashion doll lines almost exclusively. guess it makes sense that mga would come to own pixel zoo given how much they work with them, might as well cut out the middleman.
I'm curious to see how this impacts future content for rainbow high/shadow high and etc; both in quality as well as quantity. even more curious about what is said in the following excerpt:
Tumblr media
this could be a way of saying "uphold their contracts to preexisting brands that have enlisted their services" but the logistics of producing content outside of mga's brands sounds interesting. its just me reading into it since it seems like some company is always trying to make a monopoly of the doll market but yknow it would be interesting to see how that would manifest lol

A brief moment of self-awareness
"You know, some people might find it a bit odd that I like to look at pictures of little plastic people."

Then I shoved it out of my head and kept scrolling.
These are the MGAE mermaids. Mermaid Mermaze? Something like that.

the Bratz dolls celebrated their 20th anniversary. MGAE honored the occasion by re-releasing many of the Cool Bratz dolls names that were among the most popular among fans.

I wanted to test sunlight curing for these UV resins to take advantage of the summer sun. You can tell how runny or viscous the resin is by how far they travelled down the toothpicks in the minute it took to get out the door. After 15 minutes, the tiny globs are no longer wet to the touch or tacky. I will now attempt to make a full kit and see if the sun will still do the job now that it's past peak UV which was 10.4.

Working on some Bratz patterns just for fun. Pretty happy with how these (the top and pants) turned out for a first run.

Mermaze Mermaids factory rejects: $8 each at aliexpress.com/item/1005004823831727.html I was curious about these but waiting for them to hit second hand. $8 felt fair enough even if they end up as hair donors.
I love a glitter shaker doll like Novi Starz but $50 (45€) for a top and a jacket, a body that looks too skinny, glare-y eyes and light eyes on all the dark skinned dolls rubs me the wrong way. They’re cool but for $50 I expect swappable legs and a second outfit.
Ok where to start? Nera with the dark blue hair: she barely shed so that’s great, it’s kiwi with some bobble tinsel. She tried MC2 Camryn’s eyes which are the same eyes used on Mermaze but the eye sockets are too shallow and wide: they’ve reused their eye stock but didn’t redo the doll molds properly so that the eyes don’t bulge and glare. These eyes look fantastic on Project MC2 dolls (see review by ToyBox philosopher) and just wrong on Mermaze, I’ve ranted about inset eyes before but basically if you mess that up, you kneecap your doll line.
So I put milliput into the sockets and placed an acrylic iris in there which was actually a ton of work to get right and clean and smooth. It’s not as detailed an iris as i’d like but still SO much better than fish eyes. I removed her under eye glitter, reblushed, acetoned the sides of her brows too close to the hairline and the bottom of her lips painted too low.
Harmonique lilac got Adrienne’s eyes and I’m not sure i’ll keep them, it’s better than her pale turquoise eyes but still unfocused: the eyes need to be the main attraction. Her hair was trashed, I’m pretty sure the original has 3 lengths: 11cm twirls, 23cm main bulk and 30cm ponytails so buyer beware if you plan to restyle her. I cut mine down to 23cm.
Beyond that original photo, after i’d carefully sectioned out hair to salvage, I ended up just discovering more and more damage: hair sliced at 7mm-3cm along all three of her partings along with a bunch of rooting error knots.
That’s the risk of factory rejects. A risk I probably shouldn’t be taking with hard heads, I added ten or so knot method extra plugs to replace missing hair in front... shoulders still too fragile to do any more. She has a scar on her forehead and is light brown toned. Both should be easy to find bodies for (Nera is fakie pale pink or Cloe toned) but that neck hole will need modifying.
I’m not annoyed at paint or rooting errors, that comes with buying factory rejects. It’s part of the fun, the puzzle of repairing. ^__^
I am really put off by the decision to not invest in a better eye design and the way they’ve made rebodying these dolls a serious breakage risk between the tiny neck and very hard plastic. It seems they’re launching a spin-off line with better designed faces called Siren sisters so maybe save your money for that?
If you do want to get these dolls I recommend slicing into the back of the head above the second line of plugs and slicing out the eye sockets so you can place BJD 10mm eyes.

I do not need more dolls but I need the noms T___T lol
MGA loves recycling numnoms into their other products. my partner has an LOL doll with num nom earrings. Im always so tempted to get the sets with them... This Yummiland series looks so sweet and cute though. I saw a commercial for the series but haven't looked into them all as a whole yet..next on my to-do list.
