After my Board meeting this Friday morning, I tuned in to this powerful panel discussing Indigenous & anticolonial views of space exploration. I found some great organizations through the information shared today, as well as a treasure trove of white papers on space ethics.

Can A Machine Write Horror Stories?

Appropriately on Halloween, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have taught Artificial Intelligence to write scary stories. Every hour, a new story is posted on Twitter. Some of them are really scary. The question that faced the developers of the MIT Media Lab was whether they could teach a machine to scare people. For evoking emotions such as fear and fear would be an art previously reserved for human creativity alone. The expresses itself still above all in horror and horror stories. Not only horror icons like Stephen King, HP Lovecraft or Anne Rice prove that, but countless hobbyists who share their work in communities like the Reddit group r/nosleep. Every day new and always surprisingly good stories are published there. The latter gave the developers of artificial intelligence to read. Through a deep learning process, the artificial mind should take some inspiration with it. For this, the artificial intelligence determined among other things frequently occurring phrases. It captured closely word pairs, combinations of specific subjects, or even effective opening and closing sentences. This should help her to understand what causes tension and horror. Fittingly, the developers christened their artificial intelligence Shelley - free after Frankenstein author Mary Shelley, who would have turned 220 this year. Since October 23, Shelley posts a new story every hour on Twitter, each containing several individual tweets. Often consisting of more randomly mixed word pairs and sentence fragments. For example, report of a woman in a black dress, dull razor blades or a box full of stuffed animals. This makes most of the stories more disturbing, silly and surreal than really scary. But some of the short stories also surprise and could almost come from a human author. "I heard my mother's voice scream from the darkness. , God dad, please do not hurt me again. Please do not leave me alone. Please. I do not want to be here anymore. ' I turned to my left, and for a second split, I could see it here. After all that time, I could make those black eyes above me. My heart is beating so fast it is a bit shorter than my breathing. I think I'm being stalked. I do not know what happened to me, or why I was scared of it, but I need to know why. I need to know what happened." According to MIT Media Lab developers, readers can also help Shelley become a better author. Namely, by responding to their tweets or tapping their own stories under the hashtag #yourturn to complete Shelly. They are then also summarized on a separate page highlighting the sentences of the human authors and Shelley contributions. Thus, the Twitter users also provide examples where the AI writer or their elements can take them in future stories. Read the full article

SOMETHING | mindscapes is a 15 minutes sound piece created for headphones and accompanied by a light composition on a dark room. It exposes the capacity of roaming from one mental space/state to another via a binaural composition. The audience will receive a wireless FM headphone set and will be invited to sit on stage with the performer. The performance will be diffused via FM radio. The piece uses radio as a spatial medium for mobile spaces and transversal sonic architectures. People outside of the room will be invited to tune into the shared mindscape. This performance was done at @mithackingarts 2017 at the @mitmedialab SOMETHING | mindscapes is part of my solo album THINGS - soon to be edited by the label @cosmovisionregistrosandinos #sound #space #light #radio #binauralbeats #binaural #experimental #mit #hackingarts #mitmedialab (at MIT Media Lab)

Read the full article

A good talk for people working in tech, to step back and look at what we are building, from a wider perspective – to look more closely at how it is (and could be) used, and relook the way we are assessing whether we are building something “good”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Douglas Rushkoff talks about the current state of data and tech – how it’s dehumanising us. He also shares his hopes for the digital future. This event has already passed but the video is available online: https://tinyurl.com/drushkoff #sharingiscaring #teamhuman #MITMedialab #digitalfuture #douglasrushkoff

“Aguahoja” is a programmable water-based biocomposites for digital design and #fabrication developed by @mitmedialab and #NeriOxman. Using a design approach that facilitates a tight integration between material creation and robotic fabrication, the project allows for the creation of objects across a range of scales. It examines the importance of water in Nature’s systems, the cycles of birth, adaptation and decay allowing ecosystems to re-use materials again and again. By using old growth forests and coral reefs as inspiration, where waste is virtually non-existent, the design team compared this to the waste production rates of our building industries, where objects have an expiry date and materials are extracted from the earth faster than they can be replenished. 📝 Post by: @hamithz ——————————————————————— * Turn ON Post Notifications to see new content * Instagram 👉🏼 instagram.com/parametric.architecture * Website: 👉🏼 www.parametric-architecture.com * Facebook: 👉🏼 facebook.com/parametric.archi * Pinterest: 👉🏼 pinterest.com/parametricarchitecture * YouTube: 👉🏼 youtube.com/parametricarchitecture * Twitter: 👉🏼 twitter.com/parametricarch * Snapchat: 👉🏼 snapchat.com/paarchitecture * Reddit: 👉🏼 reddit.com/parametricarch * Tumblr: 👉🏼 parametricarchitecture.tumblr.com ——————————————————————— #3dprint #3dprinting #3dprinted #3dprinter #robots #robotics #robotic #architect #architectureporn #architecture #furniture #computationaldesign #architecturelovers #digitalfabrication #architects #architecteye #architecturelove #architecturedaily #parametric #architecturephotos #architecturepicture #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign (at MIT Media Lab) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6DN1LQJmLN/?igshid=4nzpj9cyzzcj

@PhyAkash The Sound Two Black Holes Merging! ✨ - 🎧 (crank it up!) The two merging black holes are each roughly 30 times the mass of the sun, with one slightly larger than the other. Time has been slowed down by a factor of about 100. The event took place 1.3 billion years ago. The incredibly powerful event, which released 50 times more energy than all the stars in the observable universe, lasted only fractions of a second. 💥 This animation by @caltechedu / @mitmedialab shows the collision of two black holes, a tremendously powerful event detected for the first time ever by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO. LIGO detected gravitational waves, or ripples in space and time generated as the black holes spiraled in toward each other, collided, and merged. Scientists used the SXS (Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes) project to animate the environment around the star. “What if our buildings were grown, not built?” Neri Oxman believes in the biological age. Where designers and architects will invent progressive design possibilities, and where products will be able to grow, heal and adapt. She demonstrates this in her project at MIT, where she breathes life into a pavilion by using silkworms to spin out the silk and fill out the gaps. For her project, Gravida – a pregnancy corset, Oxman imitates biological skin to create support, flexibility and comfort, while following natural curves of the body through a highly wrinkled and stretchable pattern.
