Vaginal Davis (DOB unknown)

A punk rock and prolific intersex artist from Los Angeles, whose crassness and drag helped to build the queercore movement.

Vaginal Davis was born intersex to a ''lesbian separatist mother'' who refused to choose a sex for her kid. Davis grew up exploring freely her gender identity and subsequently developped a strong genderqueer creative expression. She named herself after Black Panther's activist Angela Davis.

She was the frontwoman of several punk bands, such as the Afro Sisters (who opened for The Smiths) and ¡Cholita! the Female Menudo in collaboration with Alice Bag. When white men took over the punk scene, Davis devoted herself to the queercore movement and produced a great number of works (notably zine cult ''Fertile LaToyah Jackson''). Working as an impresario and a creator through many different media, Davis subverted social constructs to the extreme and is considered a true punk icon.

Finger on the nose

My mum pops in my room and says: "You know your nose is always in your sight but your brain just chooses to ignore it." She laughed at my squinting.

I told her I was not convinced so she told me to put my finger on my nose and press gently. I could see the whole of my finger without squinting but not my nose.

I just cannot see my nose without squinting and yet it's there.
