REFERENCE POST: very minor characters of Word of Honor

I originally gathered these blorbos together for a presentation called "Writing in the Margins: finding story in the minor characters of Word of Honor" (sometimes, in a pinch, I title slide deck party presentations like a paper because it's easy). My criteria for this presentation was that I wanted to highlight characters to whom a lot of people's reaction would be, "Who?" So characters like Gu Miaomiao and Gao Xiaolian and Deng Kuan, while my beloveds, are not here because they are just a bit too present in the story.

Why should you click through and read? Well, honestly, I'm adapting this as a resource for fellow fic writers who just want some folks to help flesh out the world. This post is divided into three sections: Chengling's Generation, Tianchaung's Orbit, and The Previous Generation. There's so much just going on in the background; let's take a look.

Chengling's Generation

Mu Yunge

Introduction: Episode 5* Suggested Episodes: 5, 7

* by "introduction", I mean the episode in which their name card appears, officially introducing them; for some characters, as with Mu Yunge, their first appearance in the show happens before that point

Mu Yunge is an interesting inclusion because I don't like him. He's pretty much there to suck, and then die. He's here for two reasons. One, he does a lot to flesh out his world; two, he's in the boyband in the concert they did after Word of Honor wrapped, and that is my favorite part.

I'm really only going to address the first one here. Oh, Mu Yunge. He's there to show how the Department of the Unfaithful operates, and how very present the violent misogyny they address still is in his world. He's also (to all appearances) a young man in good standing in the martial arts world. Deng Kuan is close enough to him that he's selected as one of the friends to take part in the deathmatch in his name. What does this say about the young men of that generation? And his death also has echoes in the background drama in the show: Mu Siyuan (his dad) becomes a loud voice against the ghosts and later Gao Chong.

Zhu Yaozhi

Introduction: 3 Suggested Episodes: 7, 14, & 24

Zhu Yaozhi is fascinating to me because he is such an encapsulation of what Word of Honor does with its larger plot. Because, like, there's all these moving pieces and a lot of them are moving in the background and the main characters don't really notice or give a shit, but they're definitely moving along arcs that make sense from their point of view.

This guy is a disciple of Yueyang Sect, Gao Chong's sect (along with Deng Kuan); we see him multiple times just doing kind of grunt work/investigation for them, most notably when he follows up on the guy Gu Xiang beat up for harrassing musicians and then is apologetic and embarrassed for believing his side of the story (episode 7). He's also buddies with Mo Weixu, Cao Weining's shixiong, and teases Cao Weining to him. (See this gifset for part of the scene in question, from episode 14). Early Zhu Yaozhi is a goofball who's just doing his job.

After Gao Chong's disgrace, he goes searching for Gao Xiaolian and we lose track of him until he turns up again in ep 24 being menaced by Mu Siyuan. Mu Siyuan wants him to say his master was evil and colluded with the ghosts, and Zhu Yaozhi refuses and tries to punch him. It's great. It also gives us Shen Shen to the rescue in the middle of his own loyalty/figuring out how to be truly righteous arc. I have a lot of feelings about this. He's such a useful character for showing us what Yueyang Sect is like and what becomes of it after Gao Chong dies.

Song Huairen (L) & Xie Wuyang (R)

Introduction: SHR: 5 / XWY: 8 Suggested Episodes: SHR: 5 / XWY: 9, 17

I've paired these because they're both Xie Wang’s competition, young men who also call Zhao Jing yifu. They are both disciples of Yueyang Sect; Song Huairen is supposed to be a favored disciple of Gao Chong. Xie Wang eliminates him the same night we meet him and plays it off to Zhao Jing as the shell game with the Glazed Armor going wrong.

Xie Wuyang meanwhile starts off as a character who makes Zhang Chengling’s life at Yueyang uncomfortable—up to and including whipping him during training. Very satisfyingly, Gu Xiang knocks him out when he’s giving Chengling a hard time in episode 11. Later on, after Zhao Jing has settled in at Yueyang, Xie Wuyang serves him in his private rooms doing stuff like giving him manicures. 

Mo Weixu

Introduction: 14 Suggested Episodes: 14, 26-28

Mo Weixu is the son of Mo Huaiyang (Cao Weining's horrible shifu) and Cao Weining's da-shixiong. When he first appears, he scolds Cao Weining for having no ambition but then shoos him off to check on Gu Xiang anyway, and we see this mix of sternness-as-concern and indulgence continue. He's kind to Gu Xiang, and helps guide her through greeting their shishu Fan Huaikong properly, but he also warns Cao Weining that she might not be everything she appears. He's kind of the level-headed ballast to Cao Weining's naivete and worries about him.

Mo Weixu is not at Cao Weining's wedding. Mo Huaiyang says he had to cleanse his sect because his disciple and shidi were bewitched by Gu Xiang. However, in episode 36, Xie Wang specifically says that they never found Mo Weixu's body, even though they definitely found Fan Huaikong's. Fellow fic writers: you know what that means.

Tianchuang's Orbit

Bi Xingming (L) & Cheng Zichen (R)

Introduction: 31 Suggested Episodes: 31

Disciples of Siji hidden in Tianchuang! These two were both taken as disciples by men within Tianchuang and took their surnames; Bi Xingming’s first shifu is Bi Changfeng, the guy who took the nails in episode 1. Cheng Zichen's is a guy called Cheng Xiu. They show up in like one episode but I’m obsessed with them. They lead the party of Tianchuang ducklings who rescue Zhou Zishu and then get inducted into Siji as Zhou Zishu’s disciples. Bi Xingming is specifically shown to be very eager about this, but is told he’ll have to wait to have a ceremony about it till his shixiong Chengling comes back.

Princess Jing'an

Introduction: 1 Suggested Episodes: 1

Talk about one-scene wonders—Princess Jing'an left an impression on me. What kind of past interactions does it imply that she calls Zhou Zishu Zhou-shixiong, but he doesn't know she and Jiuxiao were in love? I have questions and I want to answer them. Also even in her like 2 minutes of screentime we see her sharp and defiant and angry and it makes me want to write her SO bad.

Qingluan

Introduction: [N/A] Suggested Episodes: 30

She is literally mentioned in like 1 or 2 lines in episode 30 so she’s less fascinating for her Word of Honor appearance than for how she is mentioned here paired with her role in Qi Ye (the novel that's the prequel to the novel SHL is based on): In Qi Ye, Su Qingluan (originally named Su Cui'r) is a beauty who becomes part of the crown prince party, gets caught working against them, and is confined to a house as Helian Yi’s concubine for the foreseeable future.

In Word of Honor, she’s one of the people (the list also includes Zhou Zishu, Yunxing, Qin Jiuxiao, and Jing Beiyuan) who swore together in her courtyard to make Jinwang emperor, which implies a much more active role in their party than in Qi Ye. We also know she killed herself before the events of canon (or at least as far as Jinwang knows; in the same section, Zhou Zishu says that Jinwang poisoned Jing Beiyuan to death with a straight face). This seems to be part of the whole party splintering over time. Once more: implied story, free real estate (jazz hands).

Jing Beiyuan's six siblings

At one point Jing Beiyuan justifies being called Qi Ye (Lord Seventh) by saying he's the seventh kid in his generation. (There's a different, much more absurd, justification in the novels). I take him at his word just because that's the funniest option. I don't have more to say beyond just:

The Previous Generation

Qin-furen

Introduction: [N/A] Suggested Episodes: 12, 24

SIDEBAR: the moms. The dads have SO much narrative weight in the story in ways that most of the moms really don’t—they’re often nameless or fully invisible—so I leap at even the tiniest mentions of what they’re like and think a lot about them. Qin-furen’s the only one who really lands in the sweet spot for this post: enough info to play with and not make a total OC, not enough screentime that I expect to find many fics with her.

This is the wife of Qin Huaizhang, Zhou Zishu’s shifu. She’s mentioned in just a handful of lines and unnamed. She rescued rabbits and apparently was fearsome with her husband about it. She was friends with Chengling’s mom, who had a similar dynamic with her husband, according to Chengling. In episode 12, Zhou Zishu says, “I wanted to practice martial arts when I was a child. Sometimes, when my master forced me to play, I would seek help from his wife. She always stood by my side and criticized my master.” I have spent a truly stupid amount of time looking at her gravestone trying to glean info, and I’m still not really sure what we should be calling her.

Yue Feng'er

Introduction: 19 Suggested Episodes: 19

The eldest disciple of her generation at Healer Valley and the wife of Rong Xuan. She rough-houses with Shen Shen and is known by her own title as well as being the eldest of the Three Heroes of Healers Valley. She’s presumably well-known in the martial arts world, and woven right into the web of friendships that started off all this tragedy. And she also loved her husband so fiercely that when he was poisoned she used a forbidden technique and took the heart out of a living man to try to heal him. She’s a powerful healer and at least as much a monster as he is and I like her so much.

The Doctor takes Rose on her first voyage through time, to the year five billion. The sun is about to expand and swallow the earth. Amongst the alien races gathering to watch, a murderer is at work. Who is controlling the mysterious and deadly spiders?

Although her reaction is very different from that of the Nestene Consciousness (who is implied to have lost quite a bit in the Time War), whereas Jabe doesn’t seem to have any personal connection. I wonder what the other outsider perceptions of the War were!

11. Ahhh Rose being kind to the plumber. I love my girl. LMAO at her realising she just hitched a ride with a complete stranger w/o thinking about it. The metal spiders are very Minority Report.

Like if you’ve never even known a parent, you probably wouldn’t bring them up in a context like this, but the addition implies that Rose thinks of her dad quite a bit, and this is a nice little subtle setup to my favourite episode of the season, Father’s Day

18. The sun filter scene! It’s unexpectedly tense. I remember being really worried the first time I saw it

24. The Earth death scene is beautiful. I remember feeling so sad that everyone just missed it! And the Doctor finally realising that maybe this wasn’t a great first trip for his young companion xD

25. I'm left travelling on my own 'cos there's no one else.---There's me. What a beautiful moment of intimacy. And such great acting! The Doctor is finally beginning to let her in, and Rose has attached to this stranger so quickly, despite how prickly and condescending he can be. Soulmates <3

Writing Reflection

This was the year I finally got back into a fic-writing groove (thank you, Category 5 Blorbo Event) and it's been fucking great. My mental health has been pretty shit, in a "will get worse before it can get better" sort of way, and my brain's willingness to cooperate with stringing words together has been tremendously helpful in mitigating the worst of it.

There are eight days left to fully fund Season 3 of Shadows at the Door and get us a version of the Mountains of Madness so gay that you could power a small turbine on the spinning of Lovecraft in his grave, so this seems like a good time for me to do a few posts about my favourite episodes, and the places in and around North East of England they’re inspired by, or just remind me of. Spoilers will follow obvs.

A little late in the day (it's 10:30 pm here) but it's cool. Anyways today's piece is Brian David Gilbert's AAAH!BBA cover Lay All Your Love On Me sung by a vampire. I'm very excited because our beloved disco vampire will return singing disco from another band! Very hyped up, anyways this drawing. Um I just got the vibes that he's avry desperate and lovesick kinda dude but I roll with that yk relatability he's my lil blorbo. Another thing, I think I will cut out the next drawing and not do it- for those curious it was going to be Tear You Apart by She Wants Revenge- because the last "scary" one is going to be a comic of a poem/song in spanish that is very creepy. This will take up more of my time, and while I've sketched out 1/3 of it out, still needs time. I can't go without drawing something fr and I miss TSS (it hasn't been that long lol) so I might do something tss related idk. Not too complicated though since I've got midterms and that comic this month. Til then folks!

this is more than a few days late ik but i'm currently at a summer camp job where i am very busy!!! Hope this lil ramble is worth the wait! So, where to start 🤔 My Kepler Lives AU is something I’m currently tending on the back burner of my mind, but the seed was planted during my finale liveblog in June 2021 when I finished Wolf 359 all the way through for the first time! I did not see Kepler’s mini redemption arc reveal coming AT ALL and it FLIPPED A SWITCH in my brain. I already thought he was fun and an interesting character, but this long con was like catnip to me. Insert all the things Tumblr folks tend to say about their blorbos here. I needed him to have to live with the consequences of his actions. I needed him to have to define himself without Goddard. To define himself and his relationship with Jacobi without Goddard (and reconciling everything with Maxwell).  And with this, I can’t recall now exactly which came next, but I know the first major step was conceptualizing how Kepler could still be alive. Thankfully, the handwavey sci-fi of the Dear Listeners provided an answer. I know I’m not the first to invent the wheel that is alien clone Kepler, but I was hit with writing inspiration for a spin on Lovelace’s Change of Mind episode, but make it post-canon Kepler coming back. This idea became Special Episode: Performance of a Lifetime. Idk if you’ve read it since Kepler enjoyer already, but I used the fic to really find my interpretation of Kepler’s flavor of repression and play around with some cute SI-5 interactions while also laying a foundation for what Kepler Lives AU could be. If/when I get to writing this, I see this as being its prequel.  Beyond that, I have a massive outline document of my various SI-5/Kepcobi story ideas and lots of snippets and scenes jotted down as I had inspiration. I have a few broad start to finish outlines, but I’ve never done longfic before, so my thought process is that if I’m going to do this, I’m going to write a full first draft and then begin posting as I revise it. I have a Pinterest board, a Spotify playlist, plenty of memes, and lots of conversations with @wurmzirkus behind this idea. I imagine I’d write it as alternating Jacobi and Kepler perspectives and might have some alternate character POVs (such as Lovelace or Hera) as extra content.  Additionally, I see the fic including a brief time skip but being almost immediately post-canon. Shady Goddard subplot. Jacobi and Lovelace friendship and Lovelace and Kepler unlikely friendship that pokes at some interesting reflection on what the SI-5 dynamic was with Maxwell and where they all are now. Maxwell haunts the narrative. Jacobi takes Kepler in. Kepler adopts a street-cat, teaches a local kid chess (understatement of the year, believe me when I say little Miss Lydia is one of my FAVORITE OCs I have ever created), and is beloved by all the farmer’s market ladies and a local knitting circle. Hera has freedom via the internet, but still connects with all crew via an Amazon Alexa type set-up.  Additional fun to set the vibe: Stream the song Magnolia - Gang of Youths for Jacobi mindset upon returning to Earth imo and unironically Love Lockdown - Kanye West for part of my Kepcobi POV.  Gotta go! Oooooh! Please, please expand on the “Amy is an Eggman robot AU”! Oh! What if she’s UNAWARE that she’s one of his robots?

Hm, the idea of her being unaware is weird cause I feel like Eggman is way too proud to not let one of his own creations know who their master is, same with the mission maybe not going right if he didn't instruct her before hand. It would be kinda funny in post though, of her very obviously being this cute pink murder machine and everyone but her seems to notice that but they're still nice and accepting anywaysfdshgj. Could also make some interesting angst of her having to coming to terms with that, she might even assume that's why Sonic doesn't want to be with her or something... very fun idea but just not what I was going for.

The idea was that Amy and Metal were designed as twin bots, just with Amy looking far more realistic in order to sell the con, I guess kinda like Breezie from AoSTH (my beloved) but less Like That. I'm not sure if Sonic was aware during the events of CD that she was a robot, it'd be cute if he saved her anyways but IDK if he would realistically want to take that risk of an Eggman robot walking around. So for now I like the gag that he didn't realize till later, and by then Amy had proven herself to be her own person he could trust. Maybe like in that ending cutscene of CD it's actually her that blows up Eggman trying to escape instead of Sonic lol.

After that she'd be like her usual self except people are probably slightly offput by her being a robot before realizing she's chill. Like I said it'd be funny if she acts like it's some big secret of her's but to most it's kinda obvious. Maybe in her voice, maybe in her mannerisms, maybe in the way her joints clearly 360 sometimes fhdsgjsd. Tails and Sonic are the only ones she shares this "secret" with and Tails is probably very happy to help her with upgrades, specifically with when she wanted to make sure she still didn't look like a kid as everyone grew up. Also kinda imagine her wanting to wear bigger frillier clothing to hide any possibly seems in her body, but that's me self-indulgently wanting to put little blorbos in cute outfits lol.

I guess this au would also make her obsession with Sonic both from inspiration and a funny mix of programming seeing as he still was once her target, but with Tails' help they could probably break that, and she can be obssessed with Sonic for purely her own reasons <3. This background also makes a lot of her interactions more interesting. Her sympathizing with Gamma, convincing Shadow to fight for what he really believes in, dealing with her funny evil brother's failed attempt at taking over the world... stuff like that. I think it also makes it cute that later she's seen as the heart and mediator of the group, probably from studying up on stuff about organic folk. Maybe I could bring back her tarot card stuff too as something she finds interesting because her robo brain knows its 1000% illogical, I love stuff like that with robot/non-human characters. There's also that flicky companion she has in Sonic Prime, maybe that could've been the flicky that was powering her that got set free and replaced with a less cruel power source.

Her interactions with Tails and Metal are something I'd wanna see, but I don't have big plans for this or anything myself so honestly feel free to steal my ideas, I'd read someone elses interpretation of it.

Silly little guy (usually winged and magic) and Feared Warrior except as it turns out Silly little guy is Powerful and even MORE dangerous and just hides it ((Its a very specific character dynamic. If i had a nickel for every pair of characters ive been able to write this for id have 3 nickels. which isnt a lot but its strange its happened three times))

🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)

Another thing that pops up Often is that he's an Angel, (i made an entire race just for this one guy. look. look man i. i brainrotted so bad) which means wings unreasonable amounts of magic and secrecy! yippee :D

2.Can they take care of a plant? What about a pet? What about a child?

Surprisingly yes, there is particular plants required for a magic ritual and its not easily cultivated so they have learnt to take care of plants to an extent. Pets 100%, while they are their own beings, they have two beloved nagas bound in serpent form they would go to the end of the world for. A child? Depends on when in the story you ask this lmao.

23.Stability or novelty?

Stability 100%. Outcasted for their decisions to protect themselves and their sanity, Nikolai has, for the past 200+ years, carved out a safety net for themselves of Frigid Mountain and spreads rumour to keep folk away to ensure their little place in the world is protected. They spend most of the story with the notion of returning to that stability in mind before experiencing the world begins to expand what they consider stability to be.

12.Do they like romance in the books they read (or in the book they’re in)?

Despite Crimson being high fantasy with a bit of romance, Nikolai is very oblivious (in part because they’ve lived an isolated life in a mountain for most of it) and so affections usually go over their head. They understand the dragon principle of you’d only ever share your treasure with someone you intend to stay with forever, but wyverns don't value treasure so highly so they get the joy of fumbling their way through feelings of affection, jealousy, envy, and love.

She has and will give many speeches to the different rulers urging them to join her cause, but perhaps the most important speech she will ever give is that one that urges her dear friends and companions to join her in making a deal with the devil to ensure their future.

Gwendolyn suits shades of blue and silver, she it a dragon of shimmering starlight that gave her the title Morning Star. If she were to wear red, it would likely be deep shades of red, or red sky at night vibes.

While Gwendolyn typically has a lot of patience for many things, something she struggles with are those who waste her time. Be it people who come to her without a reason, or those that pointlessly argue with her; as queen Gwendolyn's time is precious and she does not care for those who waste it.

25.Safety or possibility?

In his earlier life possibility was his driver to explore and learn everything about the world, but after his curse 600 years ago, safety has become his priority. Never leaving the forest kingdom he calls home, devoting every moment of his time to protecting and nurturing the infant race of vampires, not yet old enough to be classified as their own race. And to Thane, who’s safety he has and will shamelessly protect above all other.

6.Who will they take advice from, no matter what it is? Who won’t they take advice from, no matter what it is?

Thane to an extent, but the person who’s advice he will take above all others is Jade. She knows of his past and she has seen glimpses of the future. She seldom talks but when she does her sign language is worth reading.

Who won’t they take advice from? A tougher one, generally he’ll listen just won’t act on it but given his predicament, he will never take any advice from one of his ‘brothers’ because it will only be the same thing, and he has no intention on dying.
