There are many things about the Trio and the way the rest of the school, etc treated them I have trouble buying, but like, the part that really gets to me is like...

For a year and a half, these three have dedicated an insane amount of time and mental energy to tormenting Taylor. Just thinking about how much work that is, arranging everything, roping everyone else in, covering your ass, planning the next thing, working out the latest round of verbal attacks...

That sounds exhausting. Just - who has the fucking time to devote that much to making this girl suffer, every day? Like, if she was just a regular target of a generalized bullying campaign, even a really vicious one, that would be one thing but like...

Unless Sophia and Emma in particular have some literal mental issues specifically aimed at Taylor, I just have a great deal of trouble with the suspension of disbelief. I just can't believe there was never a point where they got fucking bored of messing with Taylor.

Insinuation 2.4 Live Reactions

(This is me, writing reactions as I read, because why the fuck not. They're not complete, mature thoughts taken after I sit back and evaluate what I've read. Consider them as such)

Despite the way the conversation sounded, they were talking to me.  They were just pretending to talk to one another.  It was both calculating in how they were managing plausible deniability while at the same time they were acting totally juvenile by pretending I wasn’t there.  A blend of immaturity mixed with craftiness in a way only high schoolers could manage.  I would have laughed at the ridiculousness of it, if it hadn’t been at my expense.

In isolation, even at your expense, it's worth laughing at, but after a year and a half that includes all the other shit...

While this particular tactic was new to me, I’d been putting up with stuff like this for a year and a half, now.  At a certain point, I’d come to the conclusion that it was easier to sit back and take it, when it came to most things.  They wanted me to fight back, because everything was stacked in their favor.  If I stood up for myself and they still ‘won’, then it only served to feed their egos.  If I came out ahead in some way, then they got more persistent and mean for the next time.  So for much the same reason I hadn’t fought Madison for the homework she had taken from me, I just leaned against the wall next to the window and waited for them to get bored with their game or get hungry enough to leave and go have their lunches.

But maybe if you'd fought back sooner...

Maybe not, but passivity really didn't get you anywhere.

I was stunned.  I just couldn’t wrap my head around how he could just ignore this.  When he had been trying to help me, had he just been covering his own ass, doing what was required of him in the face of a situation he couldn’t ignore?  Had he just given up on me?  After trying to help, in his own completely ineffective way, after I turned his offer for help down twice, he just decided I just wasn’t worth the effort?

But things didn’t work that way here.  Girls played dirty.  If I decked Emma, she would run to the office with some fabricated story, her friends backing up her version of events.  For most, ratting to the faculty was social suicide, but Emma was more or less top dog.  If she went to the principal, people would only take things more seriously.  By the time I got back to school, they would have spread the story through the grapevine in a way that made me look like a total psycho.  Things would get worse.  Emma would be seen as the victim and girls who had previously ignored the bullying would join in on Emma’s behalf.

Like, Presumably Taylor has some reason to believe this, but given how much people rag on fanfics for overstating how 'evil' the Principal is, etc, one wonders if this is really the case, or just Taylor thinking it?

I suppose we'll see.

No, my primary concern was getting out of there.  I wasn’t going to break the promise I had made to myself.  No using powers on them.  That was the line I wasn’t crossing.  Even if I did something utterly innocuous, like give them all lice, I didn’t trust myself to stop there.  I didn’t trust myself to keep from offering blatant hints that I had powers or spoiling my secret identity just to see the looks on their faces when they realized the girl they had been tormenting was a bona-fide superhero.  It was something I couldn’t help but daydream about, but I knew the long term ramifications would spoil that. Perhaps most important, I rationalized, was keeping the two worlds separate.  What use was escapism, if the world I was escaping to was muddled with the people and things I was trying to avoid?

and yet, by the time they do realize who you are, you don't have the energy to give a shit.

On the one hand, I do get why Taylor just doesn't give a fuck about Emma by then. On the other hand... it does feel like all this set up and then - nope, nothing. Or maybe it won't, by then. But The Trio seems to loom large in the fandom regardless. And lots of people are clearly unhappy they don't get their comeuppance.

Before the thought of going back to school had even crossed my mind, I found myself wondering what I was going to do to fill my afternoon.

End of the Month Publication Roundup

Well, I managed to get quite a bit out this month.

The next chapter of Strike Out is out, so if you want to read a story of a teenage superhero realizing her mom isn't all that great and trying to find a way to improve her situation, there's that.

There's also the very first chapter of Subversion Quest, where the protagonist is the plaything of fate itself. This wild romp isn't exactly my best work, but sometimes it's fun to just be silly.

And then there's Central Collapse, which is more of an idea and part of a oneshot collection than an actual story right now. The question posed: What if a toxic parent died before the start of canon?

I've also added four chapters of Vista of the Stars, so if you want to see a teenage superhero's adventures in the Star Wars galaxy, there's plenty for you there!

And for those of you who have been waiting for it, the next dramatic section of Luck of the Draw is up! That's one interlude and six chapters of teenage superheroes fighting crime, saving lives, and finding love. (Fair warning, this part does have some close calls and transphobes, but the transphobes get beaten up and it ends with the poly lesbians expanding their romantic group, so it's all good.)

Estate of the Bay Part 1: Johnny Law

Thought we'd put together a quick breakdown of the state of Brockton as of story start, beginning with the heroes. Names in italics are changed from canon

Protectorate Heroes:

The Brockton Bay Protectorate core members are mostly unchanged, due to the point of divergence only being about ten years prior. The main differences are the absence of Triumph, who died in a horrible nepotism accident due to a lack of Panacea around for healing, and the addition of Redeye, who graduated from the Wards closer to a year before story start and rebranded from her Laserdream identity, severing the last tie between her and the Brigade, at least in the eyes of the public.

The Wards are a different story. Gallant was put permanently out of action in a horrible fucking rich boy accident, which was what precipitated Crystal being transferred in. Beyond that, Aegis is transgender but that doesn’t really come up except in the Wards interlude pre-Leviathan.

The biggest change to the Wards is the absence of Shadow Stalker - in her place is Scribble, aka Tammi. This is very much the same Rune as in canon, to be clear - no whitewashing here. She just got snapped up by the PRT while doing Plausible Deniability “Vigilantism” kind of like what Purity does and got press-ganged into the Wards. She’s not mask-off all the way about the white supremacy… at least not yet.

More importantly, she takes over Sophia’s Other role in the plot too - the Trio now consists of Emma Barnes, Madison Clements, and Tammi Surname. Always Sunny font Emma Barnes Goes Alt-Right.

Replacing New Wave as the independent heroes (or ‘heroes’ depending on who you ask) are the Arrows, a recently formed vigilante antifascist group. Spitfire, the leader, has a bit more steel up her spine than in canon (though she still struggles), Sophia’s still an angry loose cannon but just not. you know. in a racist way. She's got a lot of very good reasons to be angry. Whirligig in canon is just a power and a faction so she’s basically an OC - she’s slightly older than the other two, an even mix of the level head and the slacker. Doesn’t seem to quite fit with the vibes of the group.

For the most part, they’re concerned with not bringing the wrath of the Protectorate down on themselves - like in real life, killing Nazis tends to get more of a response than Nazis killing people does. A lot of what they do is lurk nearby during civilian antifascist action, ready to head off the Nazi capes if they try and intercept for their own side. A few months before story start, they killed Alabaster - more specifically, Sophia did, and while it hasnt been conclusively linked to them at story start, they’re keeping their heads down, to Sophia’s chagrin. 

They're still semi-associated with Palanquin, despite Spitfire not being a part of that group - they did approach her, and now they communicate sometimes, as the club with Case 53s is a pretty frequent target for neonazis and other shitheads.

Charlotte knows them by chance encounter, after Sophia saved her from a few skinheads.

Rogue One

Parian is still Parian. She’s aware of the Arrows, but disapproves of their use of violence, cause she’s a bit of a lib.

Clemente Bar by Daniel Humm x Francesco Clemente

Located upstairs from the Eleven Madison Park dining room, Clemente Bar is an intimate cocktail bar and chef’s counter from Chef Daniel Humm and artist Francesco Clemente.

The space, designed by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works, is filled with one-of-a-kind works by Clemente, in addition to thoughtfully-sourced vintage pieces, furniture by LA-based designer Brett Robinson, and custom lamps by the German artist Carsten Höller.

The beverage program, led by Sebastian Tollius, spotlights cocktails that are highly technical in their composition, yet elegantly simple in their presentation. Drawing on a diverse set of flavor profiles, from classic to nostalgic to unexpected, each one is crafted to engage all of the senses, with a detailed focus on serviceware, and garnishes.

To complement Sebastian’s cocktails, the food menu expands on Eleven Madison Park’s innovative approach to plant-based cooking, with refined, hand-held bar bites in the lounge, and a 90-minute, five-course experience at The Studio chef’s counter.

Insinuation 2.3 Live Reactions

(This is me, writing reactions as I read, because why the fuck not. They're not complete, mature thoughts taken after I sit back and evaluate what I've read. Consider them as such)

It was stuff like this that made Mr. Gladly my least favorite teacher.  I got the impression he’d be surprised to hear he was anyone’s least favorite teacher, but that was just one more point against him in my book.  I don’t think he comprehended why people might not like him, or how miserable group work was when you didn’t identify with any of the groups or cliques in the school.  He just figured people liked doing group work because it let them talk and hang out with their friends in class.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna say this a lot (probably not) but I agree wholeheartedly with Taylor Hebert here.

Greg was just the opposite.  He was smarter than average, but he had a way of saying every thought that came into his head – his train of thought didn’t have any brakes.  Or tracks.  It would have been easier to be in a group with just Sparky and essentially do the work by myself than it would be to work with Greg.

I know almost nothing about this character except that he's a poorly social nerd that a weird percentage of the SB/SV/QQ side of the fandom is really into.

I sighed as Mr. Gladly picked Greg to do our group’s presentation, and was forced to watch Greg botch it badly enough that Mr. Gladly asked him to sit down before he was finished.  Greg was one of those kids I always figured made teachers groan inwardly when they raised their hands in class.  The sort of kid that took twice as long to answer as anyone else, and was often only half-right or so off-tangent that it derailed the discussion.  I couldn’t imagine what had possessed Mr. Gladly to pick Greg to do our group’s presentation.

On the other hand, given the average userbase of those sites... I can see exactly why they glom onto Greg. Teenage me might have done the same, but by the time I heard of Worm, I was past that...ish

I'm still not sure what purpose any of this extended bit serves. We already know how much the Trio sucks.

I gave a rueful chuckle, feeling the frustration welling up, “Great.  So they might miss a few days of school, and only if I can prove they were behind it all… and whether they get suspended or not, they feel a hundred percent justified in whatever else they do to the rat for revenge.” “If you want things to get better, Taylor, you have to start somewhere.” “That isn’t a starting point.  It’s shooting myself in the foot,” I said, pulling my bag over my shoulder.  When he didn’t immediately respond, I left the classroom.

How much of Taylor's belief there's no way to get justice (which then translates into the fandom) is real? Obviously she has tried to complain and it went nowhere, but I would never have expected Mr. Gladly to actually make this approach at all, honestly.

This feels like another filler chapter, tbh. Feels like 2.1 and 2.3 didn't really need to be there.

Like, all six parts of Gestation felt like they needed to be there, as they were. 2.1 and 2.3... not as much. But I suppose even Wildbow can't knock it out of the park every time, and stuff does need set up and such like that.
