Hello! I wanted to have fun by making the tags be said in character, I'm the same person behind Hana! I use she/they/it/sol (not ordered by preference)!

He also has a mole on his left cheek. He has thick eyebrows, sports some red blush, and has 2 visible piercings on his ear: an upper gold ring and a pink heart piercing.

For his outfit, he has on a somewhat fishnet top over a gray spaghetti strapped tank top, a white bowtie around his neck as well as 2 necklaces. the necklace that's lower down is a pink heart, while the one closer up has a golden ring on it. Below where the picrew doesn't show, he has on pink boot-cut striped pants, yellow socks with red and blue circles, and white dress shoes.

15 Years of Blogging - The Milestone

Today is perhaps the biggest day for me - 15 years of blogging about manga and mental health matters.

What you see above is a manga I loved when I started blogging, Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond, and a manga I now am in love with, Sumiko Arai's The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy At All.

So much has happened. 15 years is only two words, but to really live it is a long time.

I haven't been active as much lately due to health-related matters and just taking a break from writing in general. There's so many hobbies I'm into now.

Besides reading manga, I'm into video games (especially Japanese ones), pro wrestling (enjoying the WWE renaissance), sports (mostly NBA), mahjong (still active even though I did take a short hiatus recently), and K-Pop (I've become a full-blown monster doing dance challenges at times).

It is a struggle to balance everything with my current life situation. I don't think I'll have time for everything. It's funny. I remember starting this blog not only for personal reasons, but I wanted to use it as a platform to break into the manga publishing industry.

Granted, I can still go for opportunities due to how popular manga is now compared to when I first started blogging. But it's not really on the top of my mind as much as it was many years ago.

I think that's because of mahjong and its ability to bring people face-to-face together. I don't have many manga-loving friends because most of them live far away. It can't be helped, but I think I was lonely writing about manga a whole bunch. Mahjong kind of helped reminded me that I should take chances to meet and have fun with IRL people despite what age gaps there may be. Sometimes, it's hard to make manga-loving friends in-person because a good amount of them are young and/or very shy compared to me.

Then again, I realize I have the privilege of living in New York City with an abundance of in-person meetups to check out. But the city can be notorious for being too big when you're someone who can't handle a lot of outside stimulation (which is NYC in a nutshell).

Anyway, even though I'm playing mahjong a lot, I probably will still blog until I feel like it's time to go. It's fun and I still believe communities are the answer to life's problems. No person is an island. Reading Manga Goes to School reminds me that there's still a lot of good in the world.

Social media and the news are designed to keep you glued and they don't care about your mental wellbeing. While I believe it's important to be informed, no one deserves to go into the depths of hell to stay educated. This is going to be a crazy thing for me to say, but I find the best and most caring people in life are ones that aren't so caught up with news and what not. I'm sure they are angry about the injustices in the world, but they are carefully choosing who to focus their rage on.

That's why I'm trying to practice tragic optimism. What does that mean? In the face of it all (lines taken from Nora McInerny),

When you feel invisible, making someone else feel seen.

When you feel unappreciated, show your appreciation.

When you feel slighted, be generous with someone else.

And if you ever feel useless, do something useful.

This is so much better than full-blown despair and full-blown toxic positivity. Life definitely sucks and it would suck more if we don't try our best.

I'm still trying to figure out how to manage all my interests. But I realize how much each of them have had an influence on my life and personality. It's so much better than being caught up in work and being a career try-hard. I don't think I would be the person I am if I was just a "regular" person living the daily grind.

Bud Palmer slipped on his sunglasses and set off in his Ford Sunliner convertible on this balmy subtropical Satur- day morning. All the while he tried to convince himself he could get this meeting over with quickly no matter what his shady uncle Rick was up to.

Then again Bud wished he’d just hung up on him. Not put up with “Can’t tell you over the phone. I need you here in person, soon as possible.” That way he wouldn’t be driving across the MacArthur Causeway. Moreover, if his mother hadn’t asked him to look out for her kid brother while she and his dad were on their Caribbean cruise, he’d never have been reminded of Rick’s schemes such as hanging up a dual Realtor/ PI sign.

He wouldn’t be thinking of Rick Ellis at all.

As he drove on, more disconcerting images came to mind: a wiry little guy clutching a polaroid camera, hiding behind the poinsettias as some floozy snuck into a garish motel with some- one’s husband in tow.

Not that Bud himself was always straightforward. At twenty- nine, while his friends were married with kids he was still easing out of relationships the minute he was asked, “Tell me, Bud, how much does a sportswriter make?” Or, “I hear there’s a new subdivision going up in Miramar, each house with a Lanai. Perfect for raising a family.”

In comparison with Rick, however, Bud was always honest about his intentions whether it be his work or love life. In contrast, when playing tennis for instance, Rick was always looking for an angle. He’d crouch behind the net ready to pounce or cut off an opponent’s serve, always looking to throw the server off his game.

Bud crossed over onto Miami Beach, tooled around, passed the ballfield at Flamingo Park, eased by the pastel sidewalks taking him up to Ocean Drive and the fresh fruit juice stand at 10th Street Beach. He parked by a curb directly in line with the juice stand, got out and crossed the sun-dappled street.

Glancing around, he took in the cool tinge of fall blowing in from the ocean, fusing with the salty scent of the water. The sun’s rays streamed through the fluffy clouds; the waves rippled, beckoning the smattering of sunbathers to take a dip.

Everywhere Bud looked nothing had changed. Which included the sight of middle-aged women across the way in their flowery sun dresses, whiling away the hours on the patios of their pink-stucco efficiency apartments; shuffling mahjong tiles; glancing over at the white sands stretching off into the distance in hopes of spotting some lonely bachelor. It was all predictable. Even his paper, the Miami Herald and source of his livelihood, discarded on the empty green bench, seconded the motion.

There was a photo of President Eisenhower above the fold playing golf nearby at Jackie Gleeson’s country club, and a sidebar noting the U.S. was gaining in the space race with the Soviets.

Whatever Rick was champing at the bit about had to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt.

As if in agreement, a voluptuous blond in a fuchsia bikini came into view, turned on the outdoor shower a few yards away, casually washed off the salt water residue on her shoulders, and winked.

Bud smiled back, checked his watch and gazed beyond the mahjong ladies to a gap in the row of efficiency apartments at the end of the block where the weathered bungalow sat a few yards back. The one with the fading sign fronting the bamboo porch railing that read Walk-ins Welcome: Services Unlimited.

He crossed over, hurried past the row of squat apartments, pivoted by the sign, noted the rear end of the rusty Studebaker sitting in the carport, and nodded. It was all the same-old same- old promising more of the same. He bound up the steps, called out “Hello?” opened the screen door and walked right in.

And, sure enough, there Rick was ready and waiting, sporting that signature Charlie Chaplin mustache, flowered short-sleeved shirt and white linen slacks. The first worrisome signal, however, was his bleary, blood-shot eyes as he over-poured a carafe of steaming black coffee into a mug. He whipped out a handkerchief, plunked the carafe and mug on the edge of the desk in the center of the room, and mopped up the spill. At the same time, Bud took in the rest of the place and saw that it hadn’t changed a bit, starting from the girlie calendars on the walls, milk boxes full of paperbacks on the floor; the cluttered desk topped by a scuffed black rotary phone, notary stamp, and the Smith-Corona typewriter flanked by a hat stand with a random display. To complete the picture, there was the rack of glossy magazines so that Rick could keep up with the latest, plus a wooden perch that once accommodated a talking parrot on the near side of a shaded window and a sun-bleached deck chair.

Everything was the same and not at all the same.

Interview with “Akagi” anime producer Toshio Nakatani

Happy holidays! My gift to you all is a translated interview with Akagi anime producer, Toshio Nakatani, taken from the Akagi anime complete guidebook.

26 Episodes of Akagi: The Genius Who Descended Into Darkness has been successfully completed. Why was Akagi adapted into an anime in 2004, around 15 years after the manga began? What were obstacles that had to be overcome to start broadcasting? Producer Toshio Nakatani reveals all.

Q:  You've been planning to make an anime version of Akagi for quite some time, haven't you?

Nakatani: Six or seven years ago, (note: this was published in 2006) when I was still in a different department, I told everyone I met that I'd definitely do it when I returned to the animation field.

Q: The result was a huge success, wasn't it?

Nakatani: I thought we wouldn't get good ratings because the current trend in anime is a more "cutesy" type. Round faces, round eyes, and girls. Akagi is the exact opposite. Sharp lines, pointy chin and nose, the face is drawn with thick lines.  When we actually did go forward with it, we didn't think ratings would go above 4%, but it finally exceeded that. It meant the work was receiving recognition, and as a creator, it made me the happiest out of anything in the world.

But of course, the quality of the original work was the cornerstone of the project, and I'd like to thank Director Sato, animation director Umehara, scriptwriter Hideo Takayashiki, all the voice actors, and all other staff members involved, which there's just too many to name. I'd like to thank all of them.  And thank you to the viewers as well! It's because of that kind of support and appreciation that it was successful.

Q: Sounds like you’re talking about a sports team. Would you consider yourself the coach of a winning baseball team?

Nakatani: More like curling coach (laughs), but that's how the quality of Akagi came to be, I think.

  I heard voice actors were told that they were doing a good job, that must've been motivational for them to do their best.  Yes, I've worked on a number of animated projects, but that was the first time I'd ever received compliments from another producer, especially one from another station. It was the result of work people put their lives into.

Q: Did you encounter any obstacles and difficulties while planning?

Nakatani: When we were planning the project, concerns were raised regarding the subject matter. If it encourages gambling, it couldn't be broadcast.  But I wanted to do Akagi. And moreover, Akagi wasn't just a mahjong manga, nor does it necessarily encourage gambling. No one sees it as that if you really look at it. It depicts a philosophy of life. That's the case I plead. It depicts a philosophy of human life and death. I won them over with a presentation.

Q: You're quite passionate, aren't you?

Nakatani: It was the first time I cried in a presentation (laughs)

Q: On behalf of our viewers and readers, I have one final question: Will a sequel to Akagi be animated?

Nakatani: I want to do it. No, I'll say it with certainty. I WILL do it. I've caught up more with the original work, I'll do the math there (laughs) But, before Akagi 2 comes to be, check out the current work! I don't mean to advertise, but I recommend the DVD box. It's really interesting!

Yugioh Ep 36 S4: Seto Joins Dragon Wife in Hell

So I dunno about you guys, but 2020 aged me like a lot in just these 8 months, so I figured it was time to embrace the feeling of being on death’s door and I decided to learn Mahjong. So I could truly embrace the ancients and vibe in their natural habitat.

Anyway, once I learned some Mahjong lore, some parts of Yugioh just open up. Namely--Seto’s dragons. Like a whole lot of stuff about early Seto Kaiba that confused me at the time just makes so much more sense now.

But unfortunately, he dies this episode, and he never pulled out his Blue Eyes White Dragons, and it’s just like...

...but my Mahjong deep cuts...

Like every episode I’m just rubbing my palms together in anticipation that someone will die, but like...I never get to talk about how in Mahjong, there’s only 4 white dragon tiles, but if you have 3, you can steal the fourth white dragon from another player’s discards, and that when you that, other stuff happens...I don’t get to talk about that because Seto’s hella dead.

So lets just get to the death. Dartz decides to make all of our soldier frenemies attack Pharaoh--because that’s all he needs to raise the Leviathan. Like Dartz doesn’t even really need to finish this game. He just needs Yami.

Seto picks up that these friend (and Pegasus) soldiers that Yami refuses to kill are probably going to end the world very quickly so he decides to do something about it. If this were a blog where I talked about cards instead of Mahjong, then I’d dive into the intricacies of what that even was.

But, we’re not, so lets just talk about Pegasus.

This guy harnesses some psychic energy he’s got leftover from S1 and communicates directly to Pharaoh’s mind.

So, hey, what was that about Pegasus not having powers anymore? Like? He’s still doing this? He’s still psychic and he very clearly can still make blank cards so like...I guess you can take out the eyeball and make him nicer, but you can’t take out some of the effed up magic side-effects. (like there was a comment I didn’t respond to (which, sorry about that, been a little nuts over here in California), but apparently there was a movie in between seasons where Pegasus saved their lives--so he’s legit good now...there was a DLC where character arcs happened.)

Which kind makes you wonder about Marik, but we’ll probably never see him again so o well, save it for the fanfiction.

PS Yami is totally fixating on that eye we can’t see, right? Like...it never outright tells us, but does this spiritual Orichalcos manifestation of Pegasus still have the golden eye? A human eye? Or no eye at all? Just skin?

Not like it matters because Seto does some sort of card shenanigans that undo the whole friends that are soldiers thing like it never happened.

MMMMM I don’t like these weird legs on Yugi. Don’t like the thighs it gave to Joey. No! I’m seeing like this skin-tight silhouette of half an ass right now and I really don’t like it.

Along with other card things I won’t go into that consumed most of this episode, Seto finally got hit by a...well, I mean you can clearly see it in the next cap.

So, in Mahjong, there are 3 types of dragons: a white dragon, a red dragon, and a green dragon. I used to think it was really lazy that we’re just calling monsters straight up “white dragon” or “red dragon” in this show, but now it makes more sense because this whole time it was probably baby’s first Mahjong reference but I’m too Western to know that.

Anyway, the white dragon is funny looking because it’s a white tile--just a completely blank white tile. I thought it was a wild card at first but nah--it’s a white dragon in a snowfield--which is a very funny Dad joke from 200 years ago we’re still doing today. But, often, instead of a Dad joke, they’ll just make the white dragon tile a drawing of a blank card, like this:

Kind of funny that the guy who’s shtick is white dragons, ended up with his soul in a blank card. Was that a mahjong reference? Probably not, but I noticed it.

And mahjong aside, the show paid it’s respects to Seto dying and so he took his sweet time passing on. It’s still not that much respect. We aren’t gonna get that amazing Joey death sequence from S3 that took like half an episode of scene-shredding for our mains to recover from, but like...Seto was very determined to keep going, despite not having a soul.

He even finished his turn of cards, as if to just spite Joey Wheeler for that one time Joey hella died before killing Marik.

Shippers rejoice, it’s a Yami and Seto Kaiba death sequence. If you squint really hard, it might even be an embrace. I mean they both have very sharp duel disks on, and if Yugi’s closes for whatever reason, it’ll snap Seto’s head clear off, but what other “hugs” do we really get on this show?

And as for Mokuba, he was quite tragic this episode. I mean it’s Yugioh, so it’s not like you’re gonna cry or anything, but Mokuba just doesn’t really have anything else going for him without his brother so it is legit like...man Mokuba gets a lot of crap thrown his way and even when he’s happy, he still has to live with Seto so just...Mokuba...

Again we get this bubble effect of other people trying to enter the Orichalcos which happens just a Hell of a lot this season. Like Dartz probably has never had a single person WANT to go in the green zone in 10,000 years and then these bizarre children happened and they just want to bounce off that thing like a jello pudding.

I think it took over 5 minutes for Seto to die, and he was very, very, VERY angry the entire time. Just fueled by literally nothing but rage. Could probably go a couple more episodes if he had taken a nap in the KaibaCopter, but alas, even Seto Kaiba eventually runs out of fumes.

Anyway, another Mahjong fun fact. The dragon tiles are considered an “honor tile” and how many times have we heard Seto--who is such a scumball--go off about his honor? It can be hard to use honors tiles because their rate of success is lower, so when Seto’s like “I have to live up to my dragon’s honor or I can’t keep these in my deck” could he be like...making a Mahjong pun as well as a literal reference to whatever he defines as honor?

...Again, just a Mahjong reference I noticed, but probably not what they intended at all. Which is Good Enough for this blog.

After he tragically passed on, and Yami delicately put his body on the ground, -- Dartz decided to make this moment very funny for me, instead.

Tristan and Tea kinda just stood there this entire episode while this was all going down and like...I know they can’t really do anything else at this point but like...can someone give Mokuba a hug???

I can’t believe Valon was the only guy in this entire show about friendship who knew how to hug people. He was in prison since he was 9, and then was raised by freakin Dartz, why is he the only hugger?

PS, apparently Seto’s yummy soul was enough to make the Leviathan open a single eye-ball in curiosity.

Mokuba out there flinging so many insults that he got everyone else banned from watching devil cards. It’s like sports competitions in Middle school with that one kid who won’t stop cussing. That one kid who is the reason everyone else has to sit through a boring ass assembly about sportsmanship? That’s Mokuba.

Now that everyone is ‘passed out’, we can get to the juicy stuff only the olds talk about--which sounds a lot like I’m about to do another segway into talking about Mahjong again, but I’m actually all out of the Mahjong juice. Again, I’m ass at Mahjong.

(and like...the peanut gallery died in the original version, right? I know to never trust a “they’re just sleeping” line in Yugioh.)

I would say that it must’ve really thrown people, but then again, their Pharaoh looked like...that.

So Dartz ended up wandering the earth for 5000 years, cursed to live immortally, unable to revive the great Leviathan, wallowing in his failure. Sentenced to suffer the entire existence of humanity that he never wanted to see survive anyway, unable to die himself.

That’s an interesting plotline that I wish I saw more of. I really like the idea of a supervillian who is already past his prime, who’s already burnt out, who’s so far removed from what happened that he’s fully accepted his demise and is just wandering around out of habit. But, most importantly--that changes my math. That’s like...5000 years he wasn’t slurping no souls because he was too damn depressed. So I’ll append the Deathcount. One second.

OK so we can just subtract 7.3 million from what we had, leaving us with: 7,805,844,047. Barely even made a dent but...eh...when you got the current population of the Earth in there it’s really hard to make a dent in that thing.

Yugioh is interesting because you do have some racial stuff going on here where Yami is SO OLD that he doesn’t remember not only his own name--he doesn’t remember what he looks like. He’s even seen it a few times in hallucinations but like...Yami legit doesn’t know what it is to be an ancient Egyptian anymore. It’s been a hot minute, and he still sees himself as a pale skinned Yugi clone when he spiritually manifests in the show. Because the modern day, set in Japan, through Yugi’s eyes--that’s all he knows about life.

Dartz was so impressed by Pharaoh’s magic powers that he knew--he just KNEW that this Pharaoh with the worst hair would be the yummy soul for the Leviathan tummy. But unfortunately...

This is a show that has had so MANY overlapping apocalypses that I did have to sit back and kind of count off on my fingers which crazy person this would be about.

Honestly? Either Seto or Bakura...guessing Bakura because we haven’t finished his storyline yet and I know that he’s the big bad of S5. But man...Dartz was just like “oh...no thanks to that guy. I’ll just take a nap for 5000 years, BIG no thanks.” and it does make you wonder...

...oh...so that’s why you didn’t bother Bakura in this timeline.

It also helps make Bakura even more of a threat. Again, Bakura is great because he’s just constantly leaving nuggets of what a threat he is and then just...disappears for seasons on end. The Bakura we’ve made in our head is probably way more awful than what he may end up being.

But for now, it’s fun to just fill in the gaps instead.

anyway that was it for this episode, I’m off to pretend it’s Thanksgiving week and will look forward to drowning my anxiety in a 16 lb turkey shared between four people.

If you don't think mahouka is good or interesting then I think a lot of the discourse is around a false disagreement? I thought your point was you didn't get why people didn't care for it. What are shows of this kind that you would actually put forth as good?

I said I didn’t recommend it, not that I don’t like it.

I personally like it (it’s not my favorite show but I’d rate it 8/10). I obviously do know that others don’t like it (considering I asked why they don’t), which is why I don’t recommend it.

But sure, let’s do anime recommendations; here’s some more details on all the shows I rate 10/10, in order of how much I recommend them.

(“Shows of this kind” can be interpreted a number of ways, but of these, NGNL, TenSura, OPM, and Kaminomi all have powerful protagonists.)

• No Game No Life – Sora and Shiro, gamers, get sent to a world where all conflicts are settled by games, and decide to take over the world.

Probably my all-time favorite, both in anime and in LN form. The scene in the first episode, when a god asks, “have you ever felt like you don’t belong in this world? what if I told you there was a world you did belong in?” hits really hard.

• Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu) – Korosensei teaches a regular high school class, except the part where he’s trying to teach everyone how to murder himself.

It has really good assassination action, but it’s also importantly the story of a really good teacher who loves his students. I think teachers would especially get a lot out of this story.

• Puella Magi Madoka Magica – Madoka is asked to become a magical girl and help save the world.

A classic. Easier to understand some themes if you’ve seen the magical girl shows it’s deconstructing (especially Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura), but good nonetheless.

• A Certain Scientific Railgun (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun) – Misaka, one of the most powerful people in Academy City, juggles middle school and saving the world from people who would use her powers for evil.

Index sucks, but Railgun, written by the same author and set in the same universe and having a lot of character overlap, is really good. Why? I’m not sure. Even the same characters that are one-dimensional in Index are interesting and deep in Railgun.

Since we’ve been talking about power fantasies, I should point out that Railgun isn’t one – Misaka is usually at a disadvantage in the fights.

• Angel Beats! – Guy wakes up in a high school where death isn’t permanent, and gets immediately conscripted to a war between students.

Everything about this story is done well. The character interactions are great, and the mystery has a really satisfying conclusion.

• The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland) – Kids at an orphanage have a good life as long as they don’t cross a specific line around their house – but then some kids start wondering what happens when they grow up.

It’s a good mystery with a satisfying conclusion, a lot like Angel Beats.

• Food Wars (Shokugeki) – Soma goes to the top cooking school in the world, and gets into cooking fights.

One of my friends hated it because the fanservice is kind of crazy, but I love how over-the-top everything is. People scream in vaguely sexual pleasure when they have good food.

• My Hero Academia (BnHA) - The story of a kid who wants to be the #1 superhero.

Probably the best shonen anime. Just a well-done coming-of-age story with a lot of fight scene action.

• That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (TenSura) - A guy is reincarnated in a fantasy world, as a slime.

Honestly, this is just wish-fulfillment pandering for me; I don’t know if others would like it quite as much. Of course I want to be overpowered and have shapeshifting and to live in a fantasy world. It’s... idyllic, in a way most similar isekai aren’t, but it’s not boring like Slime 300.

• One Punch Man - A more comedic take on superheroes: Saitama can beat everyone in one punch.

I usually don’t like comedy but this one weaves a lot of actually really interesting character stories into the comedy.

• Saki - Some girls enter a high school mahjong tournament.

Like Keijo!!!!!! but a lot less fanservicey. A good introduction to how sports anime work: The girl who can calculate the best move at all times isn’t the best player, because other characters include a girl with luck manipulation and a girl with time travel powers (of course they only use their powers to get advantages in mahjong). I like the Achiga-hen spinoff more because it has a nicer frame story and opening/ending music, although they’re both really mostly about the bullshit magic mahjong powers, the backstories, and the lesbians.

• The World God Only Knows (KamiNomi) - Keima, god of seduction, is recruited by Hell to help them seduce women. Unfortunately for Hell, Keima is only called “god of seduction” because he’s an expert at dating-sim games, and doesn’t know anything about actual seduction.

One of the first anime I ever watched (which has a lot to do with how much I like it – I don’t know how well it holds up), but it has a surprisingly deep storyline given its premise. I think I like it more in manga form, but the anime is good too.

When Kakeru returned from university that evening, the residents of Chikusei-sou were lined up in the yard. Apparently, right when they returned home, Kiyose had been lying in wait and captured them in succession.

With everyone assembled, Kiyose opened his mouth.

“I made a rough practice plan. I want to divide it into levels, so run five-thousand meters seriously and get your time.”

He works fast, Kakeru thought, impressed, but the twins of course complained.

“We already ran this morning, but now we have to run again?”

“I’m exhausted. The top of my leg hurts somehow.”

Kiyose didn’t miss Jouji’s line complaining about the pain in his hip.

“Does it hurt a lot?”

“No, not that much.”

“Is it just because you’re still not used to running, because your form is bad, or because your joints are weak from the start? Which is it?” Kiyose worriedly bent down in front of Jouji and gently rubbed the base of his leg with his thumb.

“Hey, hey, Haiji-san. Stop touching me there.” Jouji twisted his body about as though he was feeling ticklish.

“I think it might be his shoes,” Kakeru pointed out. “Those are basketball shoes, aren’t they?”

“They are,” Kiyose said as he stood and checked everyone’s feet.

“Why are you guys wearing basketball shoes or just sneakers? Are you guys actually going to run?”

“It’s because these are all we’ve got,” Jouta—who was wearing matching basketball shoes with Jouji—said while hiding behind Prince. As for Prince, he was wearing what could only be described as “sports shoes”, which looked like he had bought them from a discount store.

“Buy running shoes,” Kiyose gave his order.

“We bought them.” Musa and Shindou held up bags from a sports equipment store. A moment later, Yuki also brought out the new shoes he was hiding behind his back.

“It was pretty fun when we ran this morning.”

“You got pretty fired up, even though you were so reluctant before,” Nico-chan butted in.

“Good.” Kiyose nodded. “The rest of you, buy shoes that fit your feet soon. And if you can, buy a watch that you can use to time yourself.”

“I’d like the same one as Kakeru’s.” Jouta peered at Kakeru’s wrist. “It’s cool. Is it Nike?”

Kakeru’s watch was a round, streamlined shape, made of plastic, loaded with functions, and very light. Of all the watches he had used until now, this one was his favorite.

“There’s different colors too. Besides having the functions of a stopwatch, there’s also a thing where it can add up the measured times one by one…”

Jouta and Jouji were making “Hmm hmm” sounds as they listened to Kakeru’s explanation.

“I have to find more work.”

“Like for mahjong, from now on, the residents of Aotake will not be allowed to work part-time jobs,” Kiyose informed them gravely just as Shindou said that. “Is this the time to be working? Focus on your training.”

“So, how will we be able to buy the shoes and watch?” King protested.

“By the way, buy sportswear as well.” Kiyose was the picture of composure. “You’re all wearing jerseys and sweats from high school, and in the extreme case of Prince, jeans. If you wear those kinds of things, your sweat will dry poorly and you’ll feel cold. When you’re training, you must prepare a towel and a change of clothes, and be sure to change as soon as you sweat.”

“And I’m telling you, how are we supposed to buy those things without a part-time job?” King snapped again.

“You know, if you’re training from morning to night, then there’ll be no time to play. Even if it’s just your allowance, you can save up money quickly.”

“Whaaaa—!”

Sounds of protest rose up once again.

“What are all of you complaining about in the yard?”

The door of the main house opened and the landlord, who was nominally their coach, came out. At the appearance of his owner, Nira, who had been lying sprawled out with his eyes shut, happily wagged his tail.

“If it’s money, don’t worry about it.” The landlord looked around at all of them. “I heard about it from Haiji. If you’re seriously aiming for Hakone, ask the supporters’ association to provide you with what you need.”

“Supporters’ association? Is there something like that at our school?” Yuki asked doubtfully.

“We’re going to make it now.” The landlord said. Oh no, Nico-chan muttered.

“Now, let’s head to the track.”

Urged on by Kiyose, they changed locations while wearing their usual clothes. Nira also followed along, perhaps thinking that they were going for a walk.

We’re probably going to record their times at the university grounds. That was what Kakeru thought, but Kiyose was walking quickly in the opposite direction. Their destination seemed to be the ward-run grounds just beyond the Sen River.

“Haiji-san, why aren’t we using the school grounds?” Kakeru asked suspiciously. “The school is closer to Aotake, and they’re maintained.”

“The grounds are used by all kinds of sports teams and clubs. It’ll be about a million years before our turn comes around.”

“But we’re the track and field club? Don’t we have priority to use the grounds?”

“Everything has a hierarchy,” Kiyose said with a cool tone. In other words, they were such a small club that no one was aware of their existence. Kakeru decided to keep quiet, so as to not provoke Kiyose unnecessarily.

Although grass was poking out here and there on the course, the ward-run grounds had a respectable four-hundred-meter track.

Kiyose briefly explained the practice menu: Before and after each full-scale practice, do about an hour of wind sprints every time; (1) do stretches; help massage each other; and so on.

“Does wind sprinting mean running slowly?” Musa asked.

“Yeah, it means running at a level where you aren’t putting too much pressure on your body. Suddenly starting or stopping running can cause injuries.”

“If we have to run an hour before practice, I’ll be dead tired just from that.” Prince said with a face of absolute despair.

“Prince, didn’t you somehow run 5k this morning? You’ll get used to it soon, so don’t worry,” Kiyose guaranteed forcefully. “If you train diligently, it’ll definitely pay off.”

Kiyose’s words weren’t a bluff. To run long-distance, you needed different muscles compared to sprinters; instead of exerting explosive physical strength in an instant, you had to maintain a constant propulsive force for a long period of time. Where the athlete’s ability is almost entirely determined by their innate muscle quality for short-distance, in the case of long-distance, it was possible to improve one’s ability little by little through practice.

Putting it another way, you couldn’t do well at long distances unless you thoroughly confronted your own body and practiced everyday. All sports required talent, but there was probably no sport other than long-distance running where the scales of talent and hard work were so heavily tilted towards the side of hard work.

At the deserted ward-run grounds, they decided to split into two groups and measure their times. It was decided that the people who complained that “we can’t do wind sprints for an hour before we do our times”—in other words, everyone other than Kakeru and Kiyose—would run five-thousand meters suddenly at full speed for the time being, since this was their first time. Kakeru and Kiyose took everyone’s time while they were wind sprinting together on the same track. By the time their bodies were relaxed, even Prince would probably be finished running, so the plan was for the two of them to take on five thousand meters with all their strength afterwards.

It required a lot of nerve to constantly check on a group running at full speed while sprinting. If you let your focus slip, you would lose track of how many laps they were approaching.

“It’d be nice if Nira could press the stopwatch.” Kiyose stared resentfully at Nira, who was sniffing at the ground in a corner of the sports ground. Kakeru ran leisurely next to him.

“Hey, Haiji-san. No matter how you look at it, it will be a bit difficult to bring Prince to a level where he can be in the qualifiers, won’t it?” Even now, Prince was significantly behind the others. “He’s more than a lap behind.”

“It’ll be fine,” Kiyose said again.

“And the reasoning behind that?”

“Kakeru, what kind of personality do you think is suited to long-distance running?”

“Well… There’s all kinds, but I guess being persevering and stuff like that?”

“I think it’s having a sticky nature. You saw Prince’s book hoard, didn’t you? It’s not common for someone to think about manga all the time like that. Prince devotes all his time and money to manga without going out at night or wasting his money. The resilience of that passion is amazing. Him not having a hard time steadily persisting with doing one thing definitely means he has the personality for long-distance.”

Kakeru glanced at Kiyose next to him. He had a serious look on his face. Apparently, he was praising him in earnest.

Right after everyone finished running five thousand meters, Kakeru filled in the recorded times on a piece of paper.

“I didn’t. I can’t always run at my best. And Haiji-san, aren’t you the one who’s not in regular condition?”

“I’m recovering. In any case, you’re just what I expected, Musa; you can definitely go to the thirteen-minute range.”

“No, I’ve already reached my limit. I thought my heart would break down.”

“Anyways, it’s not a bad result for your first time.” Kiyose looked over the faces of everyone gathered. “As I expected, all of you have lots of potential. If you can run this much at this level, then you will grow even more depending on training.”

Having received Kiyose’s seal of approval, the twins and Shindou happily exchanged high fives. However, Yuki seemed like he couldn’t accept his own time.

“Seventeen minutes…My form still isn’t streamlined enough.” It seemed that he had immediately started analyzing with that clear head of his.

“I’m at eighteen minutes anyways,” King sulked.

“Your sweat smells like nicotine,” Yuki pointed out to Nico-chan.

“Does it?” He sniffed his arms.

“King and Nico-chan-senpai’s bodies are just not used to running. There’s no problem with your forms, so you can steadily shorten your times from now on.” Kiyose smoothed things over flawlessly. “Now, let’s go back to Aotake and have dinner.”

Jouji tugged on the hem of Kiyose’s wear with his fingertips.

“Haiji-san, Haiji-san, you forgot one person.”

In a corner of the track, Prince had fallen face down on the ground. He didn’t even twitch when Nira worriedly nudged him with his nose.

“Prince’s time is…”

“Thirty-three minutes and thirteen-point-one-three seconds,” Kakeru told Kiyose.

“Yeah, it’s hard to comment on that.” Kiyose rubbed his temple. “But, well, just the fact that that manga otaku ran from beginning to end without a break should be praised. Let’s not give up hope.”

So you really do think of Prince-san as just an otaku, Kakeru thought, but kept silent.

“Starting tomorrow, we’ll be starting serious training. You ran 5k just now with all your strength, but from now on your distances will definitely increase and your times will get faster, so I want you to feel at ease and follow me. That’s all; disperse! Ah, of course we’re running back to Aotake.”
