GRRM’s inclusion of Mance Rayder among Jon’s expansive catalogue of father figures is a very clever one, beyond just being a retread of the fantasy protagonist gaining a temporary teacher who imparts wisdom then leaves. It’s the way Mance’s identity as father-figure and king play into Martin’s subversion and deconstruction of the secret prince trope. Because he is Rhaegar’s son, many of us would expect Jon to inherit the Iron Throne once his identity is revealed. After all, that’s the rule of the genre and Jon is as clear cut a fantasy protagonist as you can get in ASOIAF. But we’re five books into a seven-book series, and Jon is nowhere near the Iron Throne. Not only that, but he still doesn’t know who he truly is. Instead, he’s spent three out of the five books interacting with Mance’s kingdom, building their trust and becoming Mance’s spiritual heir. Jon even completes what Mance tried and failed to do when he manages to bring wildings south of the Wall and install some sort of working peace with the Watch. By the end of ADWD, Jon has pretty much become the de facto leader of the wildlings and there’s thousands more left to save. So if GRRM is to subvert the hidden prince trope in any way, it looks like he already has. Jon may not be the one to inherit Rhaegar’s kingdom at the end, but it sure looks like he’ll inherit all of Mance’s. And it’s quite clever to have the fantasy protagonist not take over his father’s kingdom by virtue of his birth, but instead rule a stand in’s by virtue of his actions.

seeing some prophecy discourse which has once again reminded me why i personally find the prospect of dany as the prince that was promised really compelling. and it makes the targaryens so much thematically richer. like, they only survived the doom through the power of prophecy and then the visions marked them forever and this thing, this blessing which gave generations of targaryens some existential meaning eventually morphed into a curse which brought so many of them great misery—"my brothers dreamed of dragons too, and the dreams killed them, every one." (aemon, affc) and in due course almost ended their line once again with rhaegar. but then dany happened.
almost four hundred years since the doom when prophecy saved them and nearly killed them again on the trident, dany was born. dany who carries echoes of all her targaryen ancestors within her. she's aegon the conqueror come again but she's also maegor the cruel when she promises the khals who had hurt her khalasar would die screaming. she's rhaenyra in her struggles to wield power and establish legitimacy as a woman, she shares her sense of egalitarianism with egg, and she drinks from the cup passed from rhaegar, i.e. inherits (what he once thought of) his narrative destiny to help defend the realms during the long night.
dany who is both their beginning, since she's the first targaryen created and introduced to us on page and the narrative end point of their dynasty. which reflects all the way into her arc being cyclical by design as it calls back to the foundation of the valyrian empire in essos—during the fifth war the freehold torched old ghis with dragonfire so nothing would grow there again and centuries later this girl, the last dragon, is going to help plant trees there again. it's not about retreading old ground or rejecting her house words but about redefining what it means to be the blood of the dragon. which is not to say all that came before her was meaningless since this recontextualisation is only possible through the three centuries of ancestral history weighing on her. and dany's very existence echoes back in time because the prophecy itself has influenced the lives of generations of targaryens. three hundred years of history, all the glory and the horror concentrated in this one person-point. the prince that was promised not simply as a figure of the long night but as someone who is the apotheosis of their house. dany as both their beginning and their end, because the iron throne is presently a symbol of stagnation, a world in stasis, and it has to go. no restoration, instead the old world dying in fire and a new world being born in the aftermath.

Gasp! Not all golden! This is #Mancs, a black male from the #HeroPups and one of three black based babies. He is named after the most famous rescur dog of the Spider Special Rescue Team in Miskolc, Hungary. Mancs was a German shepherd born in 1994. His name means "paw". He was particularly skilled at finding earthquake survivors, and then alerting his rescuers. He was so good at this job that he could tell the rescuers if the person was alive or dead, and communicate this to other members of the team. If the person was alive, he stood up, wagged his tail and barked. If they were deceased, he would lay down. Mancs participated in many rescue missions, but it most well known for his rescue of a 3yr old girl who spent 82 hours under the ruins after the Izmit earthquake in 1999, Turkey. Mancs passed away on October 22, 2006 of pneumonia. In 2015 his rescue team was awarded the European Citizen's Price for their 20 years of work saving lives. The child he had rescued, Hatira Kapaln, attended as a guest of honour. Mancs was a most very brave doggo, who's hard work saved many lives. What a good boy. Thank you for joining us and #LearningWithHamsters. 🐶 https://www.instagram.com/p/ClPVRt7Affn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Settling a Debate in the Zelda Fandom
I've been paying attention to Tears of the Kingdom Discourse, namely the argument on whether the Link bought the house in Hateno Village in Breath of the Wild that Zelda moved into before TOTK.
Some argue, "No, she clearly lives alone, they call it Zelda's house and no one remembers Link."
Some argue that they clearly do as why would someone need a secret room like Zelda does if they live alone.
One thing people forget however is that when you go back to Tarrey Town in TOTK, Hudson will remember Link and state his gratitude for what Link did to help found the town in BOTW.
But in BOTW Link can only do the Tarrey Town Founding quest if he bought the Hateno house. So that seemingly settles it, Link and Zelda lived in the Hateno house between BOTW and TOTK and probably hit the yoinky sploinky.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to lurk for a few months again and not post shit in the meantime.

I don't care if people ship Jonsa, but stop stealing content from Jonrya and somehow making it about Sansa when it's actually about Arya. And stop lying about Jon and Sansa's importance to each other.
Jon and Sansa rarely think about one another. Sansa thinks about Jon one time while pretending to be a bastard, and that was only after someone else brought him up. And that was the first time she thought about him since AGoT.
Jon, on the other hand, hardly thinks about Sansa either. It's Arya that he misses even more than Robb, and Arya who misses Jon the most out of all her siblings.
Jon compares Ygritte to Arya, not Sansa.
Jon wants to kill Ramsay for being betrothed to Arya, not Sansa.
Jon sends Mance to find the grey girl on a dying horse which was supposed to be Arya, not Sansa.
Jon was willing to forsake his vows to the Night's Watch for Arya, not Sansa.
Jon's favorite person in the world is Arya, and Arya's favorite person is Jon.
