Star Trek: Savage
read it on AO3 at https://archiveofourown.org/works/50580472 by cavaroc Star Trek: Savage picks up where Star Trek: Into Darkness left off - unresolved Klingon vengeance and a disaffected Carol Marcus after the events that shook up her life. There's heavy social commentary both about Native American treatment over recent centuries as well as fossil fuel and resource extraction. The story opens with the USS Enterprise escorting a science vessel, the USS Moab, to a primitive planet on a routine mission. Unbeknownst to them is a small Klingon presence, hell-bent on revenge for the attacks from Kahn. I prefer a spoiler-free summary, so hopefully that's enough to entice you. On a more personal level, this is a story that I've had in my head for roughly a decade now, and have only finally just gotten it down. I had hoped it would be a Kelvin movie at some point, but that ship appears to be sailing, so here's the story regardless. Should it ever get to a screen, I had a few specific casting choices in mind. For the two Klingon leads, I imagined both Paul Giamatti and Dave Bautista, both of whom have expressed a desire to play Klingons. For Captain Coyote, I picture Sarah Podemski, aka, Bear's mother from Reservation Dogs. Alice Eve would of course reprise her roll as Carol Marcus. Words: 21324, Chapters: 1/1, Language: English Fandoms: Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies), Star Trek Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, No Archive Warnings Apply Categories: F/M Characters: James T. Kirk, Spock (Star Trek), Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Carol Marcus Relationships: James T. Kirk/Carol Marcus, James T. Kirk/Spock, James T. 'It’s probably for the best that the release of Dune Part 2 has been pushed back until March of next year. I mean, if you had a major blockbuster like that starring Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet would you want it to premiere without stars doing publicity? The move also means Barbie will likely dominate the crafts with less competition from friendly fire. That is, with the exception of Visual Effects, which might have been Dune 2’s to lose. The thing is, though, Oppenheimer’s visual effects will likely win, considering they’re practical and astonishing...
There is nothing wrong with CGI, particularly, but come on. Practical effects for the win. The voters must be made aware of how exceptional the work is — they can’t just lazy-vote this category on the basis of “that looks neat!” They have to be TOLD what a big deal all of this is. If the Oscar team do that, Oppie should sail through this category for the win...
Barbie’s success is remarkable, as is Oppenheimer’s. But did you ever think Sound of Freedom would top Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny?...
Killers of the Flower Moon is very much a film that sits in exactly the right place for the modern-day Left – it confirms how vicious and malicious so many white people were to Native Americans in this country as recently as 100 years ago. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer pushes back somewhat against the kind of authoritarianism we see on the rise — thought policing, censorship, expanded political powers, and witch-hunt-like paranoia. It isn’t that it’s only on the Left, it’s just that the Left has all of the power and they’re using it to their full advantage, which has choked the life out of art...
Having film critics and Oscar voters measure success only works if they aren’t insulated from the rest of life on the outside, which is where we find ourselves today.
On the other hand, there stands Barbenheimer to prove me wrong. Two films that popped unexpectedly and created a cultural phenoms unto themselves that everyone felt excited about participating in. Just in time for the crippling strike.

Keanu Reeves Walks Into the Chateau Marmont: An Always Be My Maybe Casting Story
The following post contains spoilers for Always Be My Maybe.
Keanu Reeves walked into his favorite haunt, the Chateau Marmont, wearing a black leather jacket and a motorcycle helmet. He was there for a meeting with Ali Wong and Nahnatchka Khan to discuss a potential role in Always Be My Maybe, the Netflix rom-com starring Wong and Randall Park that the internet practically willed into existence in 2016. Maybe time stopped, or just slowed down to the speed where you could take in every millisecond, but Keanu Reeves’s entrance played out exactly like his eventual introduction in Always Be My Maybe: He floated in like a goddamned movie star. “I think the entire Chateau just went silent for a moment,” says Khan, the director of the film. “That could have just been in my head, but there’s a different aura about him. It was wild.”
Wong and Khan were looking to cast Reeves as a version of himself in extreme quotation marks. The “Keanu Reeves” in Always Be My Maybewould be a hyped-up, slightly aggro horndog whose stratospheric level of celebrity is exactly the point. “Like a tourist would expect to encounter in L.A. after stepping off a TMZ tour bus,” explains Mike Golamco, one of the co-writers. Reeves would be Sasha (Ali Wong)’s new love interest and foil to the sweet, but much more human-size Marcus (Randall Park) — the childhood best friend who has always, maybe, been the one.
Keanu Reeves was the first choice in the script, written by Golamco, Ali Wong, and Randall Park. “He’s the dream guy,” said Khan. “Like, we don’t know what his schedule is, but this would be amazing.” “We all thought it was going to be impossible to get him,” said Park. “What was the likelihood of him being available, and then also him being willing to play himself? So let’s try to think of other people that we could get.”
So they brainstormed backup ideas, including Tony Leung of Wong Kar-wai fame; Mark Dacascos, the chairman of Iron Chef America who also happens to square off against Reeves in John Wick 3; M. Night Shyamalan; and, well, Paul Giamatti — an idea that particularly tickled Park. “I thought that would be really funny,” says Park. “But Ali was like, ‘No, that’s not the direction I want to go in.’”
“It was very important to me that it be someone who was Asian-American who would also be Marcus’s worst nightmare,” explains Wong. “Because if Daniel Dae Kim” — Sasha’s fiancé in the beginning of the film — “showed up, you’d be like, Ahh! if you were Marcus. It’s got to be even worse than that. So it’s got to be someone who’s internationally iconic, and someone who fits those two Venn diagrams is basically Keanu Reeves.”
And yes, the point was to reclaim Keanu Reeves, who often speaks about his Chinese-Hawaiian heritage, as Asian-American. “It’s always been important to me, to express my desire and attraction toward Asian American men,” Wong later wrote me in an email. “Since I first watched Speed, I was very aware that Keanu was Asian American because my family and community wouldn’t shut up about it. Maybe other people didn’t know but I never forgot that.”
Back to the Chateau: Khan remembers Reeves as humble, funny, well-prepared, and a big fan of Wong’s stand-up. “He loved that she was just so ballsy. He was like, ‘You take no prisoners, and I love it,’” said Khan. “He was like, ‘I would be honored to be part of this love story.’”
“[Reeves] had read the whole script and was referencing very specific parts like, ‘Well, I have a question about page 80,’” said Wong. “We’re like, page 80? I had looked at this draft so many times, I don’t even remember what happens on page 80.”
“And then he was getting into the character already. He took my hand in his hand and just stared at me like, Hi. Kind of like he does in the movie and held my hand for an awkwardly long comedic time. It was unbelievable how much he committed to it already in that moment.”
After the meeting, Keanu Reeves’s people called Wong and Khan’s people and let them know: He was in. The question from there would be one of scheduling because Reeves would also be shooting John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum at the same time. Fortunately, the two teams found a window that worked and brought Reeves to San Francisco for their last four days of production, which happened to fall in the brief time period between Reeves’s shoots in New York and the Moroccan desert with Halle Berry. “It was really just serendipitous,” said Khan.
And they would always have the Chateau.
“God knows what I had, but we all remembered what Keanu ordered,” says Khan. “He ordered a Corona and the mixed nuts. I think I’ll always remember that, until my dying day.”

You will never, but NEVER, hear me say, or read where I’ve written, that Jewish characters must be played by Jewish actors. Such a stricture would deprive us of distinguished performances by Norbert Leo Butz, Cher, Alan Cumming, Hope Davis, Paul Giamatti, Anjelica Huston, Diane Lane, Patti LuPone, Claude Rains, Isabella Rossellini, Jessica Tandy, John Turturro, Sam Waterston, Renée Zellweger, the entire cast, as far as I’m aware, of Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini and, no doubt, others that I can’t call to mind right now. (Admittedly, it would also spare us a good many undistinguished performances, by actors whom I won’t name here.)
We see a lot of thoughtlessness on this issue in the United States. It is not good news, for example, that Damian Lewis – the almighty fuss over whom I’ve never understood anyway, but that’s a different post – has been playing a character named Axelrod. That looks to me like the writers chose the character’s name at random, cast Lewis, and then went, “Oh, uh, wait ... well, what the heck.”
There is also a long history of de-Judaizing projects that do properly have Jewish content and context, either to supposedly make things easier for A-list stars or because the filmmakers are worried about scaring audiences away. Contrary to the title of this article, it was by no means a new phenomenon in the mid-1990s. Raiders of the Lost Ark, to take one example, is a film that is ultimately about Jewish history, but which has only one possibly Jewish character, Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott, of all people).
And it appears that the issue is still very much with us, on both sides of the Atlantic.
(I’d been thinking about posting something on this topic for ages and now here’s my opportunity.)

👿🌕📺 for Horatio?
Person they hate most/Happy headcanon/Favorite on screen portrayal
~~~
Claudius, easily.
Horatio is not a hateful person, but Claudius killed the love of his life’s father.
He conspired against Hamlet, and shipped him off to England while keeping Horatio at Elsinore.
So yea. Despite not being a hateful person, Horatio fucking l o a t h e s Claudius.
~~~
Horatio is a wonderful combination of quiet and passionate. Most people view him as being reserved and shy but if you went to college with this boy, you’d know that he can recite passionately and debate confidently (even when arguing with literal royalty).
~~~
This is actually a really tough one, because a lot of Hamlet films will just cast Horatio not based on if the actor actually plays the character well, but more on the strength of their chemistry w their respective Hamlet.
So there are a lot of Horatios out there who I don’t necessarily love, but I DO love their portrayal of Horatio’s relationship w Ham (Marcus Giamatti, Michael Cain, Vladimir Erenberg, etc).
If I had to pick a favorite Horatio, and just completely remove Hamlet from the equation, it would probably be Peter de Jersey from the David Tennant Hamlet.
I think he walks the perfect line of being adoring and loyal while still holding his own, being intelligent, and acknowledging that the whole situation with Hamlet is just completely banana shit bonkers.
10 Music Biopics You've Probably Forgotten About (That Aren't Rocketman)
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and Rocketman (2019) released to thunderous media and audience buzz. The last year has been a landmark one in the music biopic circuit. Despite the controversy surrounding director Bryan Singer and rampant questions concerning the film's accuracy, Bohemian Rhapsody managed to demolish box office records and procure four Oscars (including the highly coveted Oscar for best actor). While it didn't quite measure up to Bohemian Rhapsody's lush box office success, Rocketman held its own, enjoying seemingly boundless praise for its production quality and for Taron Egerton's performance as the force of nature that is Elton John.
RELATED: Rocketman: 5 Things It Does Better Than Bohemian Rhapsody (& 5 Things It Does Worse)
With the lofty popularity of both Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman evident in the enormous demand for similar stories, let's take a look back at a few existing biopics that may have been forgotten in the wake of two such tremendous narratives.
10 The Runaways (2010)
Tumblr media
Floria Sigismondi's directorial debut The Runaways chronicles the brief gritty success of the iconic 1970s all-female titular rock group. The film stars Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, in performances widely heralded as the most redeeming quality of the feature.
Though the film vastly underperformed at the box office (grossing less than $3.6 million nationwide for the film's $10 million budget), it examines the impact such a lifestyle had on these teens during a decade in which rock and roll was at its glamorous, dangerous best.
9 Control (2007)
Tumblr media
Anton Corbijn's feature film debut Control recounts the fleeting life of 1970's post-punk band Joy Division, and the bleak existence led by frontman Ian Curtis. Curtis (Sam Riley) lived a notoriously short and desolate life punctuated by his troubled marriage. Despite Joy Division's current widespread popularity, the band was on the brink of stardom (mere days from a tour in the United States) at the time of Curtis's untimely passing at the age of 23.
The film was shot on color stock and then printed to black and white, a relatively uncommon practice in contemporary cinema. Though the film never received a wide release in the United States, director Anton Corbijn had the unique privilege of being personally acquainted with all of the members of Joy Division in their active years, and thus was able to bring an intimately personal touch to the narrative.
8 Straight Outta Compton (2015)
Tumblr media
From director F. Gary Gray, Straight Outta Compton depicts the emergence, notoriety, and subsequent crumbling of the legendary hip hop group N.W.A., offering a glimpse into the early lives of its founding members. Universally observed as pioneers of gangsta rap, Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), and Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell) distil their experiences with racism and violence into their music, launching their controversial careers.
RELATED: 5 Musical Biopics Done Right (And 5 Done Wrong)
The film broke the box-office record and became the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, clearing over $60.2 million in its first weekend (a record not even Bohemian Rhapsody could rival). It was produced by two of the founding members of N.W.A. (Ice Cube and Dr. Dre) and scored an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
7 Nowhere Boy (2009)
Tumblr media
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, Nowhere Boy chronicles the adolescence of John Lennon and the formation of the band that evolved into The Beatles. Beginning in the year 1955, the film details Lennon's (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) first encounters with Paul McCartney and George Harrison and the dawn of their wildly successful music careers.
Written by Matt Greenhalgh (the same screenwriter who brought Control to the screen), the film offers a more intimate telling of Lennon's family background. It illustrates his tumultuous relationship with his mother and presents a glimpse of his childhood and teenage years, being brought up by his aunt in a suburb of Liverpool.
6 I'm Not There (2007)
Tumblr media
Directed by Todd Haynes, I'm Not There is the semi-fictionalized and rather unorthodox telling of the life of Bob Dylan. The film is split into the narratives of six characters: Jude (Cate Blanchett), Arthur (Ben Whishaw), Pastor John (Christian Bale), Billy (Richard Gere), Woody (Marcus Carl Franklin), and Robbie (Heath Ledger). Each is intended to reflect a different facet of Dylan's colorful life.
The result is a braided narrative that lends a vibrancy to the saga of Bob Dylan and brings a unique texture to the more standard form of storytelling typical to music biopics. Though the film was not commercially successful, it scored a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Jude.
5 Amadeus (1984)
Tumblr media
Directed by Milos Forman, Amadeus is the fictionalized biographical account of renowned composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Told from the perspective of rival composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), the film illustrates Mozart (Tom Hulce) as obnoxious and foolish but an unprecedented fountain of musical prowess.
RELATED: 10 Biopics About Celebrities That Are Worth Watching
A tale wrought with jealousy, betrayal, and absurdity, Amadeus was a creative gamble that yielded eight academy awards (including the Oscars for best picture and best actor), four Golden Globes, and four BAFTAs.
4 Sid and Nancy (1986)
Tumblr media
Directed by Alex Cox, Sid and Nancy divulges a partially-fictionalized account of the romance between Sex Pistols star Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) and  Nancy Spungen. The film chronicles the turbulent final days of the Sex Pistols, a demise largely credited to Vicious's spiraling relationship with Nancy.
Though the film was not commercially successful and only gained its cult following years later, it illuminated the profound effects of addiction, which ultimately led to Vicious's death at the age of just 21.
3 Walk the Line (2005)
Tumblr media
Directed by James Mangold, Walk the Line explores the life of famed singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. The film straddles memories of Cash's (Joaquin Phoenix) early childhood, his rise to fame, and his struggles. The film also highlights his relationship with first wife Vivian and his romance with second wife June Carter.
Based upon two of Cash's own autobiographies, the film earned five Oscar nominations (with Reese Witherspoon winning for best actress) and was the highest-grossing music biopic of all time before being eclipsed a decade later by Straight Outta Compton.
2 Selena (1997)
Tumblr media
Directed by Gregory Nava, Selena is an introspective look at the short life of the titular Mexican-American singer/songwriter. The film spotlights the early childhood of Selena (Jennifer Lopez), her meteoric rise to fame, and her death at the hands of her business partner, Yolanda Saldivar (Lupe Ontiveros).
Selena's living family were integral to the creation of the film, including her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., who took on the role of producer out of a desire to provide the most accurate narrative of Selena's life. Despite backlash due to her casting, Jennifer Lopez lended a vivacity that was crucial to the role of Selena and helped spotlight the life of the designated "Queen of Tejano."
1  Love & Mercy (2014)
Tumblr media
Directed by Bill Pohlad, Love & Mercy reveals the profound genius of Beach Boys founding member Brian Wilson (Paul Dano/John Cusack). Straddling two different decades, the film examines Wilson's mental state during the recording of The Beach Boys's album Pet Sounds, his treatment by psychotherapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti), and his relationship with Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks).
Though the film was only moderately commercially successful, it was the intention of Pohlad to ensure that the film was as historically accurate as possible, a fact that is evident in Dano's depiction of Wilson (which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor).
Pike appeared in a number of UK television series, including Wives and Daughters (1999), before scoring an auspicious feature film debut as the glacial beauty “Miranda Frost” in the James Bond film, Die Another Day (2002); when the film was released, she was only 23. Though her debut was a big-budget action film, the film work that followed was primarily in smaller, independent films, including Promised Land (2004), The Libertine(2004), (for which she won the Best Supporting Actress award at The British Independent Film Awards), and Pride & Prejudice (2005), as one of the Bennet daughters. A brief foray into Hollywood film followed with the action flick, Doom (2005), and the thriller, Fracture(2007), but she returned to smaller films with exceptional performances in three films: An Education (2009), Made in Dagenham (2010), and the lead opposite Paul Giamatti in Barney’s Version (2010).
As she continued her stage work in England, Pike appeared in the spy spoof, Johnny English Reborn (2011), and inhabited the role of “Andromeda” in the sci-fi epic, Wrath of the Titans (2012). She returned to action films with the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher (2012).
She returned to acting and landed the coveted title role in Gone Girl (2014). The film became a critical and box-office hit, with Pike earning the film’s sole Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. She also earned nominations as Best Actress from Screen Actor’s Guild, Golden Globes, and BAFTA.  (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0683253/bio)
Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere
Madden starred in Australia’s first indigenous teen drama, Ready for This, and in the critically applauded Redfern Now. She has also starred in The Moodys, Jack Irish, My Placeand The Code. In 2016 she starred in the miniseries Tomorrow, When the War Began which is based on the John Marsden series of young adult books. In 2018 she played Marion Quade in the miniseries Picnic at Hanging Rock,Crystal Swan in the TV miniseries Mystery Road and Immy DuPain in the series Pine Gap. She has been cast as Egwene al’Vere in Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of The Wheel of Time series.
Madden has starred in short films by Deborah Mailman, and Meryl Tankard and co-starred with Christina Ricci and Jack Thompson in Around the Block. Her first film acting job was at eight years old. She aims to become a director in the future.
Madden made her big Hollywood debut as Sammy in the 2019 film Dora and the Lost City of Gold. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeleine_Madden)
