I'm at the point in Merrick where David describes how, after Marius turned Benji and Sybelle and Lestat rose up, Lestat and Armand began destroying all the rogue vampires who had shown up to spy on Lestat.
And I can't help but wonder how Marius must have felt about it? We know afterward that he kind of fucks off in total embarrassment and buried shame at how he fucked up with Benji and Sybelle. What must it have been like for him to see Armand get out his anger at Marius like this? What would it have been like for him to watch Armand in full-on coven-master mode? Destroying and dismembering and setting fire to corpses? The Torture King of the Paris coven resurrected for one night only in all his full glory?
It's strange because so much of Marius flipping out and turning B & S is down to him misunderstanding everything and wanting to give Armand a reason to stay. But then Armand flips it around, and suddenly, he has to confront the reality of Armand being totally capable in this regard. Once again - he didn't need Marius to "save" him or give him purpose. He's perfectly capable of taking care of himself and those he loves.
What was it like for Marius to stand there in the soft rain of a New Orleans night, the creeping feeling of failure and shame beginning to swallow him up, publically embarrassed once more, as he watched his fledgling take an errant vampire in hand and twist of their limbs like a child pulling the wings off a fly?
Hmm, I do wonder.

do you ever think about nights when amadeo was being bratty like, outside of the usual Acceptable Brattiness? Do you ever think about nights when they had like actual arguments and became actually short with each other?
Nights when amadeo breaks the studio down in silence, refusing to look at marius, in a mood. Marius can sense that amadeo is thinking about going to sleep in one of the boys rooms, even just downstairs somewhere, because he doesn’t want to be around marius right now.
but he’s being bratty, he’s feeling sorry for himself, getting the way he gets when he gets too close to religion again.
and punishment isn’t the answer this time; a whipping will only make him sadder. Marius watches him as he folds up the drop cloths and lines the paint pots back up, his face stony enough to age him.
he needs gentleness, perhaps, if he were just willing to let marius give it to him.
It’s new, the way marius nudges him. Gentlest mental push. No, you want your own bed. It doesn’t matter that the master is there.
Marius sees the moment the suggestion hits him, the way it loosens his shoulders. Up on his toes, to blow out a candle, and then he lowers to the ground. Rubs his eyes. Sluggish as he makes his way to the bed chamber.
curled on his side, a bit later when marius enters, facing the fire, his back to the door. Still refusing to look, full of stubbornness, not even rolling over when marius sits on the edge of the bed, or puts a hand on amadeo’s shoulder.
suggestion again, tiny push, not a punishment. He wants amadeo to relax, to be himself again, to heal. Maybe even apologize, when he surfaces again. But amadeo flinches, as if he feels it. Trying to resist still, and thinking that he’s sick of magicians tricks.
marius leans close. Reach’s to tuck a strand of amadeo’s hair behind his ear.
“Time is a sort of river of passing events,” marius says softly. Amadeo scowls and swats at marius’s hand, curls up tighter.
the next invisible push is not so gentle. Enough that he feels the way it ripples down amadeo’s spine. But the rigidly floods out of him. Little sigh as he rolls onto his back, eyes glassy as he stares up at the ceiling.
you’re safe. You’re so safe, marius suggests to him. The little moan is like music, warming inside marius’s chest. And you deserve pleasure, there is not need to beg for absolution. And you desire your master’s comfort.
so it goes like that, with amadeos legs falling open, and the heat of the fire on the side of his face as he stares up at the master. Boneless and obedient the way he was told to be, accepting the comfort. Accepting massages, and oil slicked fingers, and tiny sips of blood as he orgasms. Over and over, and the master traces circles on the tender spot inside, until he’s so wrung out he could fall asleep like this, and he can’t remember why he so angry.
and Marius is warm from their shared heat, seeping into him through the blankets, from the fire. Amadeos cheeks turn red, unsure how he got here, drowning in all of it because he was silently told to.
you needed this, Marius suggests, three fingers deep, as amadeos eyes flutter closed, his beautiful thick lashes resting softly on his cheek. He doesn’t wake as Marius bends to clean him, licking the salty release from his belly. He draws amadeos cock into his mouth but just holds it here, just sits with it. Lets the pleasure permeate into amadeos dream world. You are safe. You are free. You will wake up yourself again.

"You fear Armand, you should fear the other one"
You know what's strange? For someone who's already warned Daniel that he'll probably die from this or turn vampire, this Raglan James is all too sure that Armand isn't a real threat to either of those two options. A Talamasca person would say that you need to fear any and all vampires because, well, they're fucking vampires. For someone to say with absolute certainty that Armand isn't a real threat to Daniel, that person needs to at least know Armand (and maybe Louis) very well. So this is where the idea that Raglan is Marius falls flat for me.
For agents who only observe and don't interact with vampires, Raglan acts very confidently, and he may even have been observing them all his life, but that doesn't give him enough argument to say outright that Armand is definitely less dangerous than Louis, not after episode 5. So either we're facing lies or there's a lot more to be told about how Talamasca relates to vampires.

hiii idk if you’ve ever discussed this before but i’ve been thinking about louis and marius interacting all day and so i’d LOVE to hear your take on what you think their dynamic would be like! what do you think it would take to get louis to engage with him on a more intimate level?

literally all my favorite quotes about Louis in canon come from that little bit in QOTD from Marius' POV! Like!!! I will never get over how IMMEDIATELY smitten they are with each other!!!
Like on the one hand we have: "Louis stood quite still looking at [Marius] as he had earlier, as though he were seeing a myth made real."
and then we see that the feeling is absolutely mutual with Marius: "He smiled at Louis. Something in the manner of this one made Marius happy, though he wasn't sure why."
I think their dynamic is just so especially interesting because they have so many connecting threads re: Lestat and Armand, so up until QOTD they really have this mythologized version of one another— to Louis, Marius is this grand figure with all the answers Louis had always been searching for, and someone who both deeply loved and deeply hurt some of Louis' closest companions. For Marius, Louis is this strange fledgling who had the audacity to expose these secrets he's kept hidden at his own expense for literal centuries. By all accounts there should be some tension there, or at the very least some awkwardness!
But just as Armand and Louis are sort of two sides of the same coin in a lot of ways, I think Louis is one of the only vampires who has an innate understanding of Marius' worldview. Louis is not the artist or philosopher or politician that Marius is, but he holds a lot of the same values. I mean— Louis is a textbook Libra for god's sake— he NEEDS order and balance in his life, and lord knows Marius is the only other person who prioritizes that as well!
So anyway this is all to say that I really don't think it would take much for Louis to want to engage with Marius on a more intimate level!
And like, I was talking to a friend about this the other day as well but I'd like to think that in their contemporary era, Louis could really be the pupil that Marius needs. Yes, Daniel's relationship with Marius is bittersweet and interesting and fun to play with, but I've always wanted to see who Marius is outside of being a caretaker, and I think Louis is just like the perfect middle ground where he doesn't need or want anyone doting on him or worrying over him, but he's still coming into his own in the new era, he's still finding himself, he needs a kind hand, someone to talk with about books and music and art and culture.
And on Marius' end, I think it would do him good to spend time with someone who is just so genuine. As much as Marius needs and wants his pupils to challenge him, I think he would really benefit from having someone who is willing to just listen and appreciate his philosophy (that's not to say that he and Louis wouldn't have disagreements— but even then I'm sure they hash it out Socratic Style and end up with enough intellectual stimulation to get them all giddy).
ANYWAY TL;DR: WE NEED MORE MARIUS & LOUIS CONTENT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

I'm seeing the odd person being confused about why Armand is so controlling in his relationship with Louis, and it boils down to him needing to feel safe.
The last time Armand felt safe was with his Maker, Marius, so he keeps trying to recreate that relationship with others and finding nobody else he dates is Marius (and that he cannot be that boy he was with Marius anymore). And yet, being in a relationship puts him in additional danger he must protect himself from--being abandoned--and he knows how to keep a coven together, so he runs his relationship like a coven. It makes perfect sense what Anne said about how, in seeking someone he can submit to, he winds up being domineering.

I honestly don’t mind that Armand was older in the show when he was turned bc it feels so tragically Antinous to me. Being in that age of passing from youth to true adulthood implies all sort of interesting things. If you’re someone for whom youth was fetishized, what is supposed to become of you once you grow beyond it? He can no longer be his maker’s beloved boy. Armand, in the headspace he was in, probably felt a kind of panic— That Marius’s hesitance to turn him would only result in him aging to the point Marius no longer wanted him to begin with. And this aging came without any of the actual benefits of adulthood— he’s enslaved, and then he’s also ill and infirm. There’s no autonomy, no authority, no agency that’s supposed to come with manhood. There’s only the no-longer-quite-boy, the not-thing. From object of desire to waste. Never the subject. Never the desirer.
