#Markus can kill Simon

I am trying to think of a pairing in this fandom where one is not at least responsible for the death of the other in any given route and I am coming up empty...
... No, wait! I got one!
Reed900! They never actually meet, and one of them has 0 dialogue or presence outside of the garden in Connor's head. So if we ignore Gavin's repeated threats and potentially successful attempt to kill Connor, and the alternative where Gavin is rendered unconscious for long enough that it indicates possible permanent brain damage, and how the RK900 is just Connor with blue eyes and a few upgrades... there we have it. The only permissible DBH ship.
how can you ship rk1k when connor brutally murders markus at one point, which also looks super fucked up considering that connor is white presenting & markus is black presenting 😔 /gen
Come on bro, almost all the characters brutally murder each other if you choose so.
Enemies to lovers is extremely popular trope, it's not that deep
#dbh#dbh meta#Kara can sacrifice Luther#Markus can kill Simon#or sacrifice North#or make choices that lead to the inevitable demise of Josh#or kill Connor#Connor can kill Markus#Hank and Connor can kill each other#Connor can kill or be responsible for the death of every deviant he meets except Ralph#so that would make another one actually wouldn't it#Connor/Ralph#the new wholesome canon OTP#the only characters in this game that meet and don't try to kill each other

Ask game uh. Idk these either. What's your top 3 favourite simarkus moments. Go
leto you can't ask me this and expect me not to write an essaANYWAY.
number one best simarkus moment known to man is the like 20 second hug in freedom march where you can hardly see what's going on because they're just so.. so fucking tender dude.... SO tender.... simon's little nod... markus' tiny pats.... they r so in love i hate it
compatible hearts scene would be first if that hug scene wasn't so good. but probably the first scene in the game i sat down and tried to dissect in a fit of homosex it drove me Crazy like.... is it gay to hold your boy best friend's wrist. is it gay to gently caress your boy best friend's chest. is it gay to hold your boy best friend's hand while he shuts down and dies. i think so.
also that scene in battle for detroit (seeing a pattern with where all the gayass scenes are. interesting) where simon gets shot and the moment he gets saved he goes on some homosexual monologue about how his life wasn't worth saving in comparison to everyone else's and yet his relationship with markus goes up tremendously anyway. yeah. i know what you are simon. i know what you are.
#honorable mentions include that scene where markus asks where simon and josh are but seemingly only gives a shit about simon at first#i know it was just to make it seem like he was panicking but josh felt like an afterthought it made me laugh#also simon's “there's always a choice” in stratford tower. something about looking a man in the eyes while he's about to kill you-#-and telling him your fate is in his hands. yeah#stratford tower is kind of just a gay chapter. markus holding simon up TWICE in one chapter????#crazy.#+ simon running into a crowd of soldiers knowing fully well he's going to get bodied just because a guy he met MAYBE 3 days ago got shot#the homosexual audacity makes a man think he can do anything.#anyway sorry leto i will forever jump at the opportunity to overanalyze things

reed800 > reed900 and the mischaracterization of connor
I never understood people’s affinity for reed900 over reed800, and all the reasonings I’ve heard for it never make sense to me. Just to be clear, this post isnt meant to attack anybody who ships reed900, I’ve watched Detroit evolution alright. I fucked with it heavy. I’ve got a solid three Reed900 fics in my ao3 bookmarks. I have credentials. Don’t come for me.
Anyway, I will always prefer Connor and Gavin’s dynamic over a Nines and Gavin hypothetical one. I feel like the reason people don’t like covnin is because they often misinterpret Connor’s character, I see this amongst convin shippers too, not just people who dislike the ship.
I keep hearing the argument that “Gavin hates Connor, and Connor doesn’t stand up for himself. Nines would be more cold, which matches Gavin’s personality.” This is probably the shittiest take I’ve ever heard. The DBH fandom tends to see Connor as meek. Because of this, they think he’s vulnerable to Gavin’s hostility, which is just not true. When we’re introduced to Gavin, he’s antagonistic towards Connor right of the bat. Connor, in order to keep the peace, remains professional. This is because initially, it’s not in Connor’s interest/programming to disobey or disrupt humans. He prefers to move along, focus on the mission and ignore unnecessary distractions. However, when Gavin persists, when the android being interrogated is about to self destruct, Connor has the choice to physically stop the officer from restraining it and he does, defying Gavin in the process as well. Connor does not care about Gavin’s human authority in this case, he only cares about what he knows to be true and sticking to his objective.
Now you may bring up the breakroom scene in which Gavin punches Connor, Connor just seems to let it happen despite it being a direct physical attack and not just an offhand comment. I hate when people bring this up because at this time, Connor was not deviant yet. He did not develop enough consciousness/deviancy to actively choose to defend himself. Again, in order to move things along and cause the least ruckus possible, he takes it. I’ve also heard arguments that Connor “pretends” to be hurt in order to seem subservient to Gavin to make it seem like he’s not fighting back against a human. I like that theory!
People also seem to forget that when things directly misalign with his mission, Connor is quick to go against anybody, even humans, who stand in the way. Have people forgotten what Connor did to Gavin in the archive room? He beat the living shit out of him, incapacitated him, and walked off with a final tie adjustment as if it was nothing. This is the Connor who you’re calling meek, the one who pretended to be the Traci’s dead girlfriend to get to Jericho. The one who sampled Markus’ voice to take advantage of beaten down Simon’s loyalty. The one who nagged Hank to rent Traci’s until the lieutenant humiliatedly obliged. The one who chased Kara and a child down a highway. The one who gets himself killed multiple times just to accomplish his mission. The one who sarcastically told Gavin he’d “miss their bromance.” PLEASE.
All of this is to make a point for a romantic/sexual dynamic between Connor and Gavin that actually puts them as equals. Where we get the good ending with deviant Connor, androids having rights, Gavin being forced into sensitivity training and actually learn to see androids as people (we love the Gavin Reed Redemption tag). None of that degrading convin bullshit where Connor puts up with Gavin’s bigotry and thinks “I can fix him!” Where Gavin actually takes responsibility for his own behavior and slowly learns to change his outlook.
Connor would not shut up to Gavin’s insults. He’d push back just as hard, sarcastic and sardonic in his own way. He’d spit some sort of off putting logical roast at Gavin to hurt his feelings, psychoanalyzing him to a T. They’d have amazing back and forth, banter fuelled with sexual tension, actual physical fights, prolonged angry eye contact, pinning down and grabbing dangerously close to certain areas. Connor beginning to warm up to Gavin’s hostility, being smart, seeing past it, knowing it’s a cover up for something more raw and vulnerable. Gavin starting to think “Maybe he’s not so bad” to “he’s funny” to “he’s pretty fucking hot” to “shit maybe I like him”. DO WE NOT SEE THE VISION!!
anyways I need to convert more people to like convin. yeah you can make your case for reed900 but they will never have as much chemistry as convin and not nearly as much hatefuck potential. thank you for reading.

Markus leaned toward Simon at the notion of having a babysitter, a small smile playing at the corner of his lips. "My sense of preservation is fine...but if I don't have a choice in the matter, so be it." In the end, if the leader of this place thought he needed to keep an eye on him, he'd oblige as much as possible.
Markus wasn't quite sure, yet, if he planned on staying. He felt like there weren't many options, especially if Leo had died of his wounds and the police were looking for a android murderer. He was too nervous to know if he had actually killed Leo, so he wasn't about to go out of his way to find out. He hadn't meant to, but he supposed when a human life was at stake, intention didn't matter all that much--and even less so when the attacker was an android.
He caught Simon's glance up at him, then pursed his lips at his words. Markus hadn't introduced himself to many in his time as a caretaker, but that didn't stop him from feeling bad about not starting off with an introduction. Perhaps falling into a beam and then straight on his face was enough of an introduction in and of itself, but first impressions be damned if he planned on staying here he had to pull himself together a little bit. He considered his next plans of action: introducing himself to the other two who had peered at him when he regained consciousness. He would need to introduce himself to Lucy, too, but Markus was sure she would overhear his introduction to Simon and he wasn't about to go out of his way to interact with her so soon. Not after that unsettling talk they just had.
Markus furrowed his brow, running back the memories Lucy had imparted on him, looking troubled as he focused on Simon's hand resting on his forearm. Moments passed in a silence filled with noises; the sound of the ball, Lucy's hums and the flicker of fire--but no reply from Markus.
It took the ball being suddenly interrupted for Markus to snap back to Simon's question, quickly looking up at him with slight panic in his eyes. "Markus." The word was slurred, as he rushed to answer as if he hadn't spaced out twice in the face of a simple question. "My name is Markus." This time, he spoke with a more confident tone, the fear quickly leaving his eyes.
The silence over them was unsettling, the flickering flames being the only remaining solace of comfort that blanketed them a moment before. Markus looked over his shoulder at Lucy who was looking outside of their infirmary. She clicked her tongue in disappointment, shaking her head as she looked back down at her organizing. "Fighting again." Her voice was gentle but carried the weight of judgement that piqued Markus' interest. He glanced at Simon, wanting so very badly to stand and see what Lucy was talking about.
North's ball was thrown once more, but not at the wall. The sound of it connecting with its new target was a soft thud, followed by a sharp exhale of air and a grunt. Footsteps disappeared quickly into the distance, and along with it a very irritated yet defeated sigh of "North!". Josh might not have said anything, but his glances at North had not gone unnoticed, and he had once again caused her to go run and hide somewhere on the abandoned ship.

Will we forget that Markus can potentially see his friend's head being smashed in front of his eyes and then be killed right before his eyes?
not even counting the moments of violence he suffers towards humans? and sees his people being killed? I understand that Markus has had a better life than many of them, but when these similar events happen to him, it's normal for him to then say "Humans hate us, why do you protect her?" (and his tone is not at all hostile, just tired, a rhetorical question seeking confirmation of his ideology, but if he becomes violent it is understandable, what he has to face is simply stressful, tiring and frustrating at the same time. it's a shame though that no one mentions Simon in Crossroads anymore if he dies in Freedom March, I understand John, but for Simon they could have included some additional dialogue.

random dbh ships as songs
these songs are all on my rk1k playlist (with the exception of the last one), but some of them definitely suit other ships better so enjoy my subjective takes
RK1K I Like It by Stray Kids it was tough to pick one so i just picked one that's also one of my all-time favorite songs. this is the "it's complicated, maybe we shouldn't be together but i really like being together" vibe. very will they, won't they which feels rk1k-coded since deviant hunter and deviant leader ending up together??? the press would go crazy.
NORKUS Partners in Crime (feat. Ash Costello) by Set It Off like iconic crime duo that are ride-or-dies just screams norkus
AMANACONDA No Mercy by DeathbyRomy connor x amanda is a hella rarepair but THINK OF THE POTENTIAL PPL!!!! it's the best toxic relationship out there in dbh and this song just encapsulates the vibes (this is also revolution rk1k-coded)
RK1900 Pretty Boy by Naethan Apollo what can i say? they're just 3 pretty boys that want to be the other pretty boy's favorite pretty boy. ultimate pining love triangle turned polycule
SIMARKUS 2WORLDS - Demo Version by Madge "if you give me a piece of your heart" LIKE C'MON IT'S JUST WORKS (this works for norkus too)
SICON Little Do You Know by Alex & Sierra i imagine this is a post-game world where connor finds simon at the top of stratford and they both feel conflicted and regretful about how their first meeting ended up
LUTHARA Bullet (Vampire Redux) by Ryan Star honestly, this works for any ship that has a self-sacrificial idiot (cough markus and connor cough). but i picked it for luthara bc you can choose as markus or connor to not sacrifice yourself but luther will ALWAYS sacrifice himself to save kara and alice
CONNIEL You're Not Welcome by Naethan Apollo okay this one isn't really "ship" vibes but more like post-game daniel is fucking pissed at connor for killing him and he hates connor's guts and doesn't think he deserves a place in jericho (verse 2 really sells this idea). i imagine it could eventually spiral into a real slow burn enemies to lovers LMAO
CHLORTH She Likes a Boy by Nxdia chloe meets north not realizing north is a bisexual icon so she totally has a chance (this works for literally any north ship)
sorry all these ships lean a bit on the connor side. i'm biased!!!
#i know i know i literally didn't include the fandom's 2 most popular ships but like they're not top of mind for me#i will offer “daylight” by david kushner for hankcon consideration but idk man i don't ship them so idk if its a good fit#as a meme pick for reed900 i'll throw out “daddy cop” by zander hawley LMAO#mine#rk1k#norkus#amanaconda#rk1900#simarkus#sicon#luthara#chlorth#conniel#Spotify#dbh#detroit become human#d:bh#detroit: become human

connor can js like always land on his feet. but only when like falling or sliding or smth, he can and will bump into a table n fall on his face. makes for some super cool superhero moves tho
markus loves the color orange. everyone finds him weird.
NO CLUE if ive said this before (probs have sorry), but markus can go from respected leader to leo manfred’s annoying little brother (can we PLEASE get more sibling relationship w these two? maybe? idk bug ask ig) with zero transition. like, “look out! the man who js have androids rights has js put a fake bug on ur pillow!” kinda shit idk
markus LOVES to push hank’s buttons. like, dude leave the poor grandpa alone!! thats ur bf’s dad (or bf/ex idfk u can decide that one)
jericrew has fallen asleep in a pile on top of eachother more than once!!!!!!!!!!
connor n simon were super awkward around each other at first lmao. simon was terrified that connor was gonna snap n kill everyone n connor was terrified that simon was gonna snap n take random children hostage. they, QUICKLY, realized that both of these thoughts were irrational. they r now v close
connor, the two tracis u see at the eden club, n rupert r all some weird little friend group. idk where i got this thought but i did!! n it wont leave!! please help!!
sometimes markus’ replacement parts will pop out random. android doctors i forgot the word, connor, simon, n KAMSKI have all tried n figure out whats wrong w him. absolutely nothing. it js happens. it has (more than once) happened in the middle of a v important meeting, n he scared the shit out of politicians
kara uses mom emojis if that makes sense
yes, im aware that hank’s technically a millennial, but looking at his birth yr hes so close to gen x he would have some of the same.. tendencies. “connor! how do u work this thing!” is probably top five most used phrases in the anderson household
#dbh#detroit become human#rk1k#connor dbh#markus dbh#hank anderson#rupert dbh#kara dbh#echo dbh#ripple dbh#i think thats their names#dont quote me on that#this is v markus centers oopsie daisy#i dont care#more markus material thx!#written late at night dont judge

I like Markus and because I like him it's a bit frustrating when his character is cheapened with idealisation and "everything he's ever done was right and just". No, he is not ideal, he made his own mistakes -- sometimes he's wrong, sometimes he can fuck up badly or do or say something stupid.
He has his own share of blood on his hands, some of which (if not all) may be a subject of his great regret, and I like it this way. There are no easy universally correct answers to everything and I hate when game tries to make them appear this way. I don't want him perfect or always right because that would be the one thing to make him boring, and in fiction the worst thing one can be is fucking boring and always right. No, really. I like the option of him ripping the pump regulator out of that broken android in the landfill (kinda wish there was no other choice indeed), I like how sparing a human in Stratford tower results in having his crew members hurt, and how by not killing Simon he exposes the whole Jericho to the possibility of being found. I like when there's no correct choices for him to pick from but two equally bad choices with consequences that compete with each other in what's worse. Pretty much everyone agrees that it's stupid when he's demonised as some sort of terrorist, but it's also true the other way around. I absolutely hate how his character is sometimes cheapened to the point of being mythical holy creature that never did a single thing in his whole life wrong and should never be subjected to any form of criticism for his actions. Markus is not perfect*, and I'd genuinely hate it if he was.
* no good character is. If one is perfect it's probably some sort of propaganda, story for kids or really bad writing

I wanna hear your headcanons about Josh and dynamic he has with Markus
oh shoot I love that guy he’s so underrated. I love how bold and unapologetic he is of his opinons. This’ll be long so I’ll try and section it off:
if you’ve got any you’d like to add I’d love to discuss !!
- his arms seem clean by the time his intro comes around, so given his backstory of having been beaten by drunk college students I’d assumed by then he’d have replaced or healed from most physical damages. then again, I still hc his torso endowed with soldered bullet wounds and plasticine chassis slightly warped from the heat caused by explosives in BfD.
- his baseline for his opinions stems from his past occupation as a professor. He was built to be a walking textbook, he’d be most knowledgeable on civil rights protests and how minority groups reacted to oppression as it was literally ingrained in him from creation. His insistence of refraining from human casualties and making a stand even if it meant the death of many androids is a mirror image of how various peaceful protests throughout history were carried through.
- due to his strong voice, he probably oversees the wing of jericho relating to intel and underground recruitment. he’s able to broadcast on a mass scale (projecting functions / specialized hardware) and is responsible for relaying hidden messages to guide deviants safely into jericho through methods invisible to the naked human eye. he’s quite talkative, so he fills in the goal of jericho to deviants markus may have freshly converted. like a guide. (this is more speculation, but I’d like to think Jericho’s old symbol being a monkey’s wrench was his idea as it references the railroad.)
- josh probably finds comfort in knowing his words are genuinely heard by the people of jericho, compared to the ignoring and abuse he was victim to while instructing at college. the students saw his lectures as nothing more than a boring youtube video spoken verbally as a lazy excuse for an actual, human professor to not be teaching instead. In jericho, he’s seen as both a person and a superintendent, so he’s respected and listened to by other androids. and they recognize that josh’s information isn’t regurgitated from the internet, but of his own experiences and thoughts.
- relating to bonds, while north paired herself with markus constantly id say josh grew close with simon if not already been close previously. he acts as si’s voice quite a lot in Jericho’s chapter, and he wears a university sweater that may have been tied to josh. they were both paired off together on multiple occasions (Stratford, together in the cyberlife warehouse truck, and possible capital park team), so it’s safe to say they probably work well together.
// DYNAMIC WITH MARKUS
I truly believe it fluctuates depending on which Markus decision-wise. Peaceful Markus seems as the most favorable choice to win Josh’s full approval, but his respect and support are on two different fences to me as shown by the argument he can kick up at the beginning of Crossroads. he supports Markus’ choices, but he doesn’t necessarily approve of them. He doesn’t like the deaths of unaffiliated humans, or any who were caught in the crossfire of their missions and he’s not afraid to voice his strong opinions on those matters. yes josh will kill and harm humans, but only if they’re directly involved with their cause and in the moment (ex. the armed forces he’s shot at in both Stratford and fought in freedom march in self-defense).
He clashes with Markus, but I believe it’s out of respect and as an attempt to display his thoughts on the matter. It does no good to blindly follow a leader if you believe their methods are flawed / in need of calling out. and Josh does just that. he also clashes with north quite often, and simon too. no one is safe from josh’s opposition. It just shows that markus has just a chance as any to hear Josh’s words, because what good is improvement if not begun with criticism? It’s why I love josh and some hate him, what others see as him being annoying I see as a necessity both gameplay-wise and in terms of their personalities. Yes his logic is flawed. But so is north’s and Simon’s. All three are from different backgrounds and have different reasonings for how they view humans. If josh believes something is wrong you’re damn right he’s gonna say something. That’s why he’s awesome.
#dbh josh#dbh#this is just my opinion but his flaws I love because it makes him three dimensional#it shows why markus is leader and he isn’t#josh has strong opinions#but he doesn’t have a DRIVE like how markus and to an extent north has too#headcanons

CHARACTER ANALYSIS PART 1:
NORTH — common fandom misconceptions¹
Instead of doing other stuff I had planned (like touching grass, for instance) I did a little character analysis thing specifically for my favorite characters; Kara, Markus and North. these characters are my babies and they deserve love. I'm posting each separately (because I haven't completed Kara's and Markus yet 👩🏾🦯)
| next
North is a WR400 android that used to be stationed at the Eden Club. She's only been at Jericho since October 7th, and on October 4th she followed a human customer home and killed him to allow herself escape. It takes her four days to reach Jericho and she never says how she finds the freighter or what she did during those four days.
She's Markus' main companion and the only character that can reach Lover status with him. She's also the only one of his lieutenants that can lead the revolution in his place.
But there's a huge difference between how fanon sees North (and how she is characterized) and how she actually is.
MISCONCEPTIONS
O1. "BLOOD THIRSTY": Comparing North with the multiple characters who are bloodthirsty, and fanon perception of these characters, you start to notice that North herself isn't even "blood thirsty" and that the fandom has no problems with violent characters.
In terms of kill count, Connor has the highest in the game (not counting the millions that probably died in the nuclear bomb ending) rather than North.
You could argue that North wants to "kill all humans" but even that has no basis in canon because North's entire argument is that humans are not going to just hand them freedom and they have to be prepared to fight rather than try to compromise or find a middle ground where they will probably end up losing more.
Her argument does not extend to unnecessary acts of violence such as killing humans just for the fun of it. If it was, I'm sure she'd lead a charge down the street and start shooting innocents but the people who end up being killed by North are law enforcement/military—people standing in the way of Jericho's safety.
I mean, c'mon, she has the opportunity to let the android with the cobalt bomb do what he wants. After all, it would greatly benefit the androids if they'd used the bomb from the beginning; it wouldn't have harmed the androids in Jericho but it would drive all the humans out of Detroit—victory!
But instead she takes the time to talk the android down and take the detonator away from him.
She gives the bomb to Markus as a last resort.
"If the humans overcome us, our people will disappear forever. This may be our only chance to survive if things go wrong."
O2. "SHE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT MARKUS": Thank you @konami-code-ao3 for reminding this take existed because I genuinely forgot about it. This is typically used to compare North to Simon and the quality of either one's relationship with Markus. Usually, people will call Simon compassionate, loving, kind, willing to die for Markus, etc to contrast to North while stating she's the exact opposite and therefore, "not good for him".
Shipping a non canon couple doesn't mean automatically hating the canon partner. I mean, you don't see me raving about how much I hate North because, I think Markus/Connor would have been a cool canon option, do you?
Typically, the North hate from Simarkus shippers (before anyone goes "not all of us", I know it's not all, but you get the implication of what I'm saying) is justified by "oh, they should have been canon boo!!" Which is strange because North has nothing to do with what writer of the game decides is canon. And David Cage does a piss poor job at everything in the game; from the racial allegory to demonizing a black man's anger. You seriously think he's going to do a good job of portraying a gay couple? An interracial one at that? I can already see the image of how terribly that's going to go.
And the worst part is, I've seen this happening in many fandoms. Unnecessary hate directed at a female character because she's "getting in the way of a mlm ship" as if canon ever stopped anyone, least of all the DBH fandom.
It should also be noted that I'm not here to deny or confirm whether Simon actually has any of those qualities I listed earlier and I try to ignore shipping discourse but it's strange that people are willing to overlook the multiple times North can help and defend Markus just because they want make Markus and Simon kiss.
She's the one we see defend Markus the most. She's his closet companion and whether they're romantic or not it doesn't take away from the fact the North cares about Markus and his wellbeing. She's always looking out for him and picking up the broken pieces of whatever mistakes he makes, sometimes even when she shouldn't.
O3. "DISLOYAL": Like most of the things in this list, this does a great disservice to North. It ignores the countless times North is willing to put herself on the line for the safety of Jericho and the androids within it. Because at her core, North is very loyal. She's the type of ally perfect for a cause like Jericho's because you know she'll defend it till her last breath.
See, North's top priority is Jericho. It's very important to her. Jericho is a sanctuary; she found it during the four days between her escape and her arrival. You can assume that she had been wandering before someone (another android) gave her the key and told her to find Jericho.
She finds a place cut off from the rest of humanity. Where she's surrounded by androids who are just like her. Androids who escaped from different lives, for whatever reason and are seeking refuge. Of course she's not going to want to lose them. Jericho is a representation of the state of the android race. The continuation of their species depends on at least a few of them surviving to see another day.
In fact, I'm 110% sure if North was in Simon's place during the Stratford Mission, she would have made the choice to end her life on the spot rather than leave Markus to decide. Because Jericho is at stake and Jericho is important to North. Besides, she can go out knowing she died for a case she believed in.
North is usually willing to put Jericho above all else and make decisions other people might find difficult. She suggests that Simon be killed after he is compromised because once he's found, Jericho's location could be acquired.
She risks her life multiple times for the revolution. She gives Markus her heart so he can continue the revolution when it seems like all else has failed. She tells him to leave her behind and run if she gets shot by Warren's soldiers.
North also doesn't see any important reason why Jericho should ever be compromised by one of their own. In her eyes, the worst thing you can do is sell out to the humans (case in point if you accept Perkins deal).
I find her dedication to her people admirable.
O4. "ANGER ISSUES/IMPULSE CONTROL": Another fandom interpretation that came from... nowhere. The times we ever see North angry is when one of the others compromises the mission by being inefficient or if they cross her boundaries. The GIF I used in this post is one example. If you fail to hide and the drone spots you and then you miss your QTEs while trying to dismantle the drone, she gets pissed. In the same Chapter if Markus kisses her without her consent, she gets angry.
In terms of being erratic, Todd and Leo are the main characters we see with this problem. Hank also displays a lot of anger issues throughout the game. He's one of the first humans to harass Connor—he grabs him by his collar and threatens him multiple times (at Jimmy's bar, the precinct), he shoots him in the head and kills him. He pulls a gun on his coworker Gavin Reed (another aggressive human) while in the precinct .²
There's an entire list of people with anger issues to burn through before we even start considering North—and this includes androids.
This characterization may also be because a lot of people see disagreeing with someone as being angry with them because North and the other Jericho leaders do disagree with each other a lot. But quite frankly, the fact that they disagree means a higher possibility of reaching a compromise that benefits Jericho instead of them all pretending they agree with each other.
This take also ignores the fact that she respects whatever Markus (i.e the player) chooses as his final decision.
For instance, In the Stratford Tower, Markus can choose to Ruse the guards rather than kill them. North doesn't like this option but she lets him go with it. But if Markus fails at the ruse, North steps in and knocks the guards out for him. She doesn't kill them, even if she suggests this at first.
She understands that Markus wants a revolution without human casualties and as much as she disagrees, she still respects that.
THINGS ABOUT NORTH PEOPLE IGNORE
That's right, people can disagree with someone and still respect that they have different opinions.
O5. "HEARTLESS": North isn't the nicest, sweetest, most flowery person in the game but a character could be the harshest person to exist and it would never stop anyone from liking them. So why North?
But first, North isn't even as heartless as the fandom says she is. She's just not docile and folks don't like that. Because god forbid a woman ever have a personality that isn't the cardboard cut out "nice girl". I mean, on a normal day, not liking someone because they're a little mean is understandable but it's clearly not a problem of being "a little mean" when there's characters (all male, by the way) who are worse but still get applauded for it.
Like I mentioned earlier, North isn't even what you would call "mean". The most she does is state her opinion and stand by her beliefs but she gets labelled as "heartless" and "bitchy". Meanwhile, Gavin Reed is pointing guns at people and suggesting to "rough up" a suspect but he's the relatable character.
O1. She trusts Connor the moment he deviates. Unlike Markus, she never has to choose between killing Connor or trusting him. She easily welcomes him within Jericho's ranks even though he's been a threat to Jericho's safety from the beginning.
I suppose she sees Connor as a pawn in Cyberlife's hands and there's no use in punishing one of their own for that.
And sure, this can be rationalized as "It doesn't mean anything. Markus is dead the game has to continue so North doesn't actually have to choose to trust Connor", I ask you this question; "If she's so bloodthirsty, why didn't the game have her kill Connor with no questions asked?"
Seems like an effective way to punish players who got Markus killed. A nice reminder to not lose your playable characters or there will be major consequences.
O2. North isn't an outlier. This is in terms of her opinions on the direction the revolution should head. I usually see a lot of people characterize her opinion on the revolution as though it is unique and she's the only person who has a stance like that.
A lot of androids agree with her, evidenced by the background conversations you can listen in on during the crossroads chapter.
"They're going to kill us all! Well I'm willing to fight. We can't just let them slaughter us!"
"We were just there. We didn't do anything wrong!… We just wanted to tell them "We want freedom!"… Then they opened fire!.. It was carnage. Carnage…"
"They opened fire on us even though we were unarmed… Hundreds of us died there, the place was covered with blue blood!.. We cannot just sit here and watch them murder us, we've gotta defend ourselves! We've gotta fight back, we have no choice!"
I believe North represents most of Jericho. Somewhere in David Cabbage's mind, she also represents Markus' "android side" or something similar to that — the side the game pushes you to resist— but she's not the outlier, Josh is the outlier.
O3. Markus' arrival reignites her hope that androids can one day be free. She tells him this over and over but I don't think people really comprehend what that means. I imagine North before the revolution had the hope of a better life slowly sucked out of her with each new bad thing and the longer Jericho's situation got worse. It's a beautiful thing that she gets that hope back.
CONCLUSION
footnotes
North is a really interesting character with many aspects to her, even speaking in-universe terms. I would have talked about those other aspects but I'm trying to stay on theme. I also didn't touch on all the misconceptions because some of them we're honestly too absurd for me to even bother (like the one comparing her to Todd, what the fuck?)
²sure you could argue that Hank was trying to protect Connor from Gavin but Hank is Gavin's superior officer. He has authority over him. There's no need for a gun.
¹funny little thing I did while writing this was that I went looking for fandom opinions on North since a lot of people hated her. But I was unable to find concrete stances. Most of them were usually "she's annoying" "she's too flat" and "she's too violent" without ever actually explaining why. Nobody ever gave a genuine explanation. And it was impossible to come up with anything against groundless arguments so, I circled back to Tumblr to see what I could find but it was a similar problem. It's like people don't know why they hate North. Just that they do.
#tldr: let North exist in peace#also I'm not trying to convince anyone to become a north stan. Detroit Become Human x We happy few au
These artworks are several weeks old and I completely forgot to post them 😭 they're too good to waste so I won't :3
I was having brainrot after I finished watching WHF

Children were unfortunately killed in war and any living children found in the canon timeline in the game makes the public aggressive, which led to the government eliminating them out of existence 💀
Kara and Connor are both still androids in this au, however Markus is human (North is an android who takes care of android refugee camp, Simon and Josh are human). Both the humans and androids have to take joy, the androids need it to function, I wanna say it's combined with the thirium but I don't wanna sound stupid.
The androids have pins (where the emblem would usually be) that they use for navigation, it's basically a usb. Just hook it up and you can put in and out data. The androids are connected the same way, the only way to remove the holographic mask is through messing with their programming. I didn't want to make it easy to remove like it was in the game
I made Markus human because it made sense to it he is gonna start a campaign to end the drug abuse and famine so 💀 he also lost his legs in a hiking accident, the grieve of losing his limbs was how he got on joy, what snaps him out of it is, he remembers Leo who went insane and disappeared. I'm open to more suggestions for Markus story tbh 😭
Kara is a public house keeper, she isn't owned by anyone (Todd is more like her manager in some way, he makes sure she doesn't go out of line), just scheduled a day with her and she'll show up to clean. One day, she is late for her regularly scheduled joy refill, and she opened her eyes for the first, she witnessed the dark and gloomy world, instead of being scared , she braver, almost as she had done it before (she has dw). Kara in this au is forced to explore the open world and then eventually ends up with 2 kids, Alice (canon) and Audrey (concept art Alice) because I love stressing Kara out !! :3 since children are exotic in the game's lore
Connor is not explicitly a deviant hunter anymore? But more like a downer hunter, he chases the stubborn ones and guides the innocent ones to the joy checkpoints. Hank is a former police lieutenant as usual, however he quit working after the death of Cole, who was killed by aggressive passerbys. Hank was frustrated with the justice system, which was why he left. Connor basically has to drag him back.
Congratulations on reading this far ily, if you have anything to add or ask pls feel free I am not creative by any means 😔

Okay so. Androids sexuality.
I think that every sexually "useful "(that's fucking creepy said like that 😦) androids are pansexual. I don't think they're "pansexual" actually, I think they're coded to be capable of loving anyone regardless of anything, but I'll say pan so it's easier. Following this, Kara would be pansexual, because in KARA the short film, she says herself that she can be an intimate partner. But since it's not canon, is she an intimate partner in the canon ? If she's not, she hasn't the ability to love and is then aroace.
Then we got weird androids like Markus. He was a gift from Kamski to Carl, and Carl is an old man, so Kamski probably coded Markus to be only a caretaker, so if we want to be logic, Markus isn't particularly programmed to love, and isn't built to have sex. BUT, he can fall in love with North, and that's rlly weird ? Although he falls in love after seeing her memory, which could mean that North somehow gave him the ability/code to love. And since North is only an intimate partner, Markus is probably pan too ONLY if you fall in love with North. Otherwise, I consider him aroace.
Then there's Connor. He's aroace since he's only a detective. But. Like Markus, he has a way of becoming capable of love (not only one actually). First we have the Tracis (when he's reviewing the proofs and if you kill them), especially the blue one since you scan her memory. There's also all the Eden Club androids, maybe Simon but I'm really not sure he's very similar to Kara though, ect. But I would think that he loses the "love code" everytime he dies, and there's also the possibility of Cyberlife removing it anyway, or even Connor himself removing it from his own code.
Those are just theories so yeah. And anyway love is too fucking weird to be explained ig 💀

I "like" how people are sure that Connor becoming a deviant is and should be entirely Markus' achievement, and not Hank's. After all, Markus said only a few beautiful words that he spoke to each android he saw, and that’s all. But at the same time, people forget that Markus can stop trusting Connor right after this and kills him in the church. People forget that North could be in Markus' place. And that Connor could become a deviant even with her doing the same thing. But they still pretend that it was Markus who did something special for Connor, not Hank. It's funny that after all these words about Connor being a person, Markus is still able to kill him in cold blood. Just like he can kill Simon on the roof. It's a choice of the player but it is still a choice and and option. I am amused by the hypocrisy with which people forget about this. Yes, you can refer to the conventions of the game, but excuse me, essentially the whole game is one big convention. You cannot conveniently ignore one thing and use the other to prove your point.
People say that Hank means nothing because he himself only recently began to understand that androids are alive, but they forget that Markus became a deviant just a few days before. People conveniently forget that Markus can betray his people while Hank will stand by the androids until the end, even if he and Connor are enemies. That is, according to people, it is stupid to want Hank to be the reason of Connor’s deviation (although Hank and Connor essentially help each other change and Hank is the one who pushes Connor to deviate, the one who sees him as a living being), but to want Markus (who Connor sees for the first time) to be the reason of his deviation is so right, despite the fact that there is a choice in the church to kill Connor, despite all the sweet words about “Connor, you are more than just a machine.” Seriously? This is despite the fact that Hank, as a human, has more reasons to fear androids, because they kill humans, and Markus has no reason to kill Connor in the church, because deviants, by all logic, must not be able to betray their own kind.
At least, that should be the case, but once again, Markus still has the choice to betray his people, while Connor in the church hasn't shown that he is capable of betrayal. He helped the androids escape, he himself became a CyberLife's enemy and what for? To get shot in the head after "Connor, you are a person and deserve more"? Such people usually bring the bridge scene up, because Hank can shoot Connor too. But Hank does this, not knowing whether Connor can be alive, while Markus can kill a deviant Connor, who has already proven that he is on the side of his kind.
This could be debated forever, but I personally don't see anything wrong with thinking/wanting that it would have been better for Connor to become a deviant because of Hank.

fmk luther josh simon
*wipes forehead, makes laboured panting noises* did someone say luther—
Okay, this is great actually because I married Kara in a previous ask and now my favourite underrated king gets in on it, too. With this in mind:
Marry Luther with the speed and enthusiasm that is DESERVED. I have been madly in love since the scene where he pulls an uno reverse on Zlatko and snatches his shotgun. Mmm, yes. I love a man who could crush my skull into a fine powder but is far more likely to bake me cookies
Fuck Josh because I also maintain that he is criminally slept on. He was actually the Jerricrew representative that I liked the most on my first playthrough I have since switched gears to north because i love a dangerous queen but that is neither here nor there
Petition for DBH to be re-released, everything is (mostly) the same except now Markus' storyline has a dating sim B Plot in which you can choose between North, Josh and Simon.
That being said, Kill Simon. Again.
I'm really sorry. I know he has a lot of enjoyers and I don't *dislike* the guy, but I have gotten him killed at Stratford Tower on the vast majority of my playthroughs, so I fear we were never meant to be 😔
#upon rerelease can we maybe also fix the alice plot twist#please and thank you#i hope to one day understand the simon type as i fear liking gavin but not liking him says things about my taste#ask game

I know the fandom tends to be a rivalry between these two for Markus and (I personally don't find either ship annoying, but I'm not really a fan of this, I'd rather keep North and Simon as friends without dragging them into a romance)
but I love them both and they are some of my favorite characters in Detroit and I wish there were more interactions between the two of them, we often see them get along, I would even say more than Josh and Simon (Time To Decide, Spare Parts in not wanting to take John with them, if North is the Leader Simon agrees with her in storming the camps)
It is true that North suggested killing Simon at Stratford Tower, but it was more for the danger of them finding Jericho through his memory (Which can actually happen since Connor can trick Simon and find Jericho) than wanting to kill him, and when the roles are reversed and it is Simon who asks Markus to let North go in Crossroads, later if Markus saves her and asks her about her wound, in reality North will be she agrees with Simon that Markus shouldn't have risked his life to save her, so she doesn't hold a grudge, but rather is consistent about it and was okay with her death
"You have to think of our people first, nothing else matters" if Markus/Connor die, Simon will take North away and jump with her, if North is the Leader and Connor is alive, North will wait for Connor and then Simon to jump and will jump last (despite the soldiers chasing them)
(I didn't find any clips with Simon alive, but if he is alive, then North will wait for him too before jumping) In addition to more interactions, I would also like North to be able to apologize to Simon if he returns after the events of Stratford, with Simon being able to forgive her and understanding why she wanted to do so.
^ Imagine this interaction, but instead of Markus there would be North, it would be an interesting scene, maybe hugging would be too much, but at least a dialogue between the two and with North apologizing and Simon forgiving her but in general I would like to have more interaction with just the Jericrew, because they seem to revolve too much around Markus and seem to forget that they exist with each other, until Josh and North remember that they exist with each other to do the confrontation scene on Markus' shoulders "Good Angel" and "Bad Devil" of the narrative, there are few moments when they are truly a team, when they connect with each other rather than being a dysfunctional team also Josh and Simon, Josh is concerned about Simon's condition if he gets shot in Stratford and helps him get to the entrance, we can also see that Josh supposedly gave a University of Detroit t-shirt to Simon
As for his interactions with North, Josh will blame Markus for provoking the humans and will ask North out loud how long it will take for the humans to find out about Jericho because of Markus? but when North seems to be hurt by such statements
It sounds like Josh actually regretted venting about the situation to North about Markus that way, maybe even acknowledging that North cared about Markus?
You have every right to tell me that's just my headcanon, though. Josh will get North out of trouble by force if Markus is killed in the Freedom March.
and if Markus lets North die at Crossroads, he will lose a lot of his ties. Could this suggest that Josh cares deeply for North despite their arguments? If Markus shoots Simon, he will lose some relationship with Josh, but not in the level where Markus lets North die at Crossroads
for the rest Simon and North both will defend Markus' sacrifice from Josh if Markus dies both can save Markus' ass multiple times throughout the story and both can be badass to escape from the fearsome deviant hunter Connor in Crossroads (Connor will catch them anyway, but that's another story) I can see a potential friendship between these two, it would have been nice if, when choosing not to shoot Simon, North instead of Markus gave her gun to Simon to defend himself, but I guess Cage was actively trying to make the player hate North, lol.
The Jericrew could have been beautiful characters, explored and appreciated more by the fandom, unfortunately it didn't go that way, Cage treated the Jericrew badly. PS: I sorry for my english, i know it's horrible.

"Promise me you'll take care of him."
Summary: Markus takes Simon to see an old friend.
Trigger Warnings: None.
The moon illuminated the driveway as the two androids stepped off the bus and into the snow. White particles floated around them and the snow crunched beneath their feet. “Are you sure it was a good idea…bringing me?” The blonde looked up at the newfound rebellion leader, anxiety swirling in his chest.
“I want you to meet him. And I think he can help with our cause, he’s always been a great mentor.”
The blonde nodded and allowed his friend to lead the way, taking in the sight of snow covered trees and hedges. If Simon zoomed in his optical vision enough, he could see the different shapes of snowflakes around them. As the pair approached the wooden front doors, they opened automatically, Simon assumed at Markus’s command, or possibly because Markus used to be Carl’s android.
“Welcome home, Markus.”
The large mansion chimed to the brunette as he made his way up the large wooden stairs. He turned to look at Simon who was looking around the entrance. He seemed enthralled with the tiny robotic singing birds, the chandelier that illuminated the foyer, the library that sat through the second set of doors, and the general warmth that the home gave off. The blonde quickly joined his counterpart on the stairs as the two overlooked the foyer from above. Markus led the way to Carl’s room to find an android standing outside his bedroom. The unknown android looked at the pair and began to ask questions. “Who are you? How did you get in?”
“We need to see Carl.” Markus spoke as Simon watched the interaction.
“Carl isn’t seeing anyone. You need to leave.”
Markus walked forward and grabbed the android by his arm, interfacing. “Please. I need to see him.”
“He’s very weak. I’m not sure he’ll be able to talk to you.” The android stepped aside and allowed the two men to walk inside. Carl was in a hospital bed now, hooked up to monitors, and a soft beeping filled the room. Markus rushed over, sitting on the bed. “Carl…no…hey.”
“Markus…I was hoping you’d come. And I see you brought a friend with you.” Markus smiled and held Carl’s hand in his own while Simon waited patiently by the door.
“This is Simon, he’s one of the people helping me lead the cause. I’ve missed you so much, Carl. You don’t know how much I’ve missed you…” Markus sniffled, and Simon suddenly became aware of how emotional this truly was. This wasn’t simply Markus reuniting with an old friend, no. This was a son reuniting with his father.
“What’s wrong, Markus?”
“I’m completely lost, Carl. Completely lost… the whole world’s falling apart around me and…I tried to do the right thing. I looked for answers…instead I just find more doubts and more uncertainty.” Carl sighed and gripped Markus’s hand with as much strength as he could muster. “The world is ruled by fear, Markus. Fear of others, fear of the future. It’s like me, too old. It’s time for it to end.” Markus suddenly stood up and faced away from his father.
“Oh, what should I do? Carl, they’re killing my people. I don’t want to answer violence with violence, but tell me, what choice do they give?” The leader turned back to the human whose life was slowly being taken by age. The elder spoke, “Being alive is making choices. Between love and hate, holding out your hand or closing it as a fist. I don’t have any easy answers, Markus. You have to accept the world as it is, or fight to change it.”
Markus sat back down beside his father as the weight of the android future truly began to weigh on him, or the first time he let it show. Simon did not know the amount of pressure that Markus was under, but he admired him for how well he was handling being under so much pressure and still making the best decisions for all androids worldwide.
“You’re my son, Markus. Our blood isn’t the same color, but I know a part of me is in you. When the world falls into darkness, some men have the courage to lead it out. You’re one of those men. Face the abyss, but don’t let it consume you.” Simon’s chest tightened at Carl’s words. He had never met such a good hearted human. Markus nodded as Carl looked over to the blonde by the door.
“Come over here, son.” Simon was confused and surprised by the older man suddenly speaking to him, but he walked over and Markus stood, allowing Simon to take his spot on the bed. “Markus, will you bring me some water from downstairs please?”
The brunette nodded and smiled, leaving the room and leaving the other two alone.
“Your name is Simon, right?” The blonde nodded nervously, and the older man laughed softly.
“I’m not so old I can’t see how Markus looks at you, Simon. And I won’t be around to guide him for much longer, so I need you to promise me that you won’t let him get into any trouble. That you’ll look after him.” Carl held Simon’s hands as the android’s thirium pump began working quicker. Had he been so transparent?
“I promise.” A small blue tint began to form on his cheeks.
Markus returned with the water in hand, setting it on Carl’s bedside table. Simon looked up at Markus from where he sat, and smiled. Carl watched as he sipped on his water, watched the look in his son’s eyes when he was with Simon. He knew that look, he had wore that look with his late wife. He handed the cold glass back to his son and watched as the two androids left quietly. The old man closed his eyes and smiled. His son was going to be loved after he was gone. And that’s all he needed.
