Violet and Rose Ch. 6
Larissa Weems x OC (Fern Rogers)
Authors Note: Oof. Sometimes I start a chapter and I don’t even know where it’s goin.
Tumblr media
"Up and at 'em!" Diane called from outside your bedroom door, knocking a few times just for good measure. You turn your face away from Larissa's side to look at the time: 5:00am. Not even Larissa made you get up this early during the summertime.
You let out a sleepy laugh as Larissa groaned and pulled the covers over her head. You had stayed up late talking, forgetting about how your parents have a no sleeping in rule. Larissa wanted to chat with you about her guilt of you not living in Wisconsin and you needed to share with her your family's theory that she was your 'sugar mommy'.
You still couldn't believe Larissa's reaction. She laughed. She thought it was hilarious. As you both got ready for bed, she kept saying, 'does my sugar baby need this' or 'I love you my sugar baby'. You found it absolutely maddening. You knew that this was a serious issue, but Larissa played it off as though it was a small bump in the road. You wondered if she was playing it cool to make you feel better.
You sneak your head under the covers. Larissa's eyes are open and a mild look of disgust, "Why do we have to get up?"
"You don't, technically, but I have to meet with a couple of locals." As you talk, you can tell Larissa is trying to charm you into staying in bed. Her hands tug gently at the fabric of your shirt and her eyes are all seductive and dreamy, "You could come with me though."
"Do I have to wear the boots?"
You roll your eyes and slip from the bed. Larissa tries to catch you, but her hands are too slow. You look at her as you strip, pulling off your pajamas and grabbing a pair of jeans that hung over the back of a chair. She peaks out from under the blankets, not trying to hide the fact she was watching you with hungry eyes. You decide to chastise her a bit for the hungry stare, "Larissa, I'm not getting back in that bed. You can just stay here. Wouldn't that be fun? My real mommy AND my sugar mommy spending time together?"
You can tell that Larissa is displeased by the idea of it, but she continues to sarcastically try to get you into bed, "Please come back to bed? I'm just so turned on by the childhood trophies and Jane Goodall posters."
"Ha ha ha. I wanted Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson, but they don't make posters of them." You state in a matter-of-fact tone that made Larissa laugh.
You pull on a sports-bra and an old t-shirt from undergrad as Larissa continues talking, "If I go, do I have to ride a horse? Also, if I go, can I get a coffee?"
"No horses. We would take the truck. Yes, we can go in town for a coffee." At the word, 'yes' to a coffee, Larissa was sitting up in bed ready to go for the day.
------
"Phone? Keys? Kiss?" This was the same three questions your mom has always asked you before you left the house to go somewhere. You held up your phone and showed her the keys, then she grabbed your face and pressed a kiss to your cheek.
"I got everything, ma. Don't worry about it."
"Donelson's, then the Martin's, head across town to Ms. Mary's after that." Your mom instructed you, reminding you for what felt like the thousandth time of who you were supposed to visit, "Take Larissa out for lunch or something while your at it."
"Thank you." Larissa smiled triumphantly as your mother pulled her down for a kiss on the cheek too.
You mom now spoke to Larissa specifically, "When you get home, we will do some cooking together. Won't we, sweetheart?"
"Of course." Larissa responded, heading out the door first.
You lingered behind to talk to your mother, "Do not ask her about being my sugar mommy. I don't want to keep arguing about thi-"
"Fern, I'm not going to ask her about being your sugar mommy or whatever. I talked to your father about it and I may have been a little... much last night."
The look on your face told Diane that you didn't quite believe her.
"I think I just got nervous that your relationship is so non-traditional and everything about our family is so traditional, but you... You, Ferny, you have always been the one to break the mold, so I'm sorry and I was wrong."
You hugged your mother and began to tease her, lightening the mood, "I can't believe that Diane Rogers was wrong. Can I get that in writing? Will you repeat that so I can record it?"
Your mother began to chuckle at your ridiculousness, pushing you out of the house, "Get out of here. Pain in my ass."
You trail after Larissa, lightly jogging to catch up. Her eyes seemed unsure of the vehicle when you approached the red, beat-up truck, but she didn't say anything.
"We are taking ol' Eleanor for a spin." You smile, opening up the passenger side door for Larissa. You couldn't help but look at her head to toe, secretly enjoying the way she looks in casual clothing. Larissa hopped into the front seat and immediately adjusted her chair to accommodate her legs as your mother was usually the one in the passenger seat.
"Coffee?" Larissa asked as soon as you closed your car door.
"Coffee second. Corn first."
-------
The first stop didn't take long at all. It turn's out Mrs. Donelson was overly worried about this year's crop, but it was doing perfectly fine. You did a quick lap of a few different fields, driving Larissa around on some of the backroads. After a couple stops in the fields, you encouraged her to drive, so you could jump out and get back inside without turning off the car. She was a little nervous at first, but after she settled into the driver's seat, you began thinking she was becoming a little too comfortable.
"Jeezz, Rissa. Not so harsh on the turns, huh?" You gripped at the "oh-shit" handle, as your father called it, and looked at Larissa in shock. Larissa was enjoying the gravel road beneath the car's tires, "Gravel is all fun and games until it's not."
"Okay, okay, okay." Larissa rolled her eyes and did what she was told.
You had her stay in the driver's seat, making her drive you both into town. You wouldn't deny how good and carefree the drive felt. You lifted the armrest and slide across the bench seating, Larissa's arm draped over your shoulder as you both sat listening to the country radio with the volume on low.
You have driven this road hundreds of times. You knew every dip and turn in the roads. You knew when to expect fields of crops and when to expect pastures with cattle. You knew every house, every half-fallen barn, and every broken down tractor.
“Keep going straight. You will see the coffeehouse on the left as we go down Main Street.” You don’t move from Larissa’s side, but your arm stretches in front of you to point forward. You bring your arm back down and continue watching out the front window as Larissa drives.
Larissa rolls to a stop in front of the one stoplight in town. You feel yourself have a mini heart attack, standing on the street corner is Sarah who is waiting for the light to turn as well. There was no doubting that she noticed your family’s truck. You saw her staring directly back at you, watching as you were tucked into Larissa’s side.
The light turned green and she maintained eye contact as Larissa drove you up the street to park in front of the local coffeehouse. You wondered if Sarah would follow you up the street. You were so anxious to come into contact with her. Larissa didn’t seem to notice your nervousness as she turned off the engine and hopped from the truck. Her hand was outstretched to you, helping you from the truck as well. Just this one gesture made you feel better. Larissa was your girl, not Sarah.
You held open the door to the coffeehouse, allowing Larissa to walk in first. You follow after her. The coffee shop wasn’t typically busy, but it obviously had enough customers to stay in business. Larissa wasted no time ordering herself a large latte and ordering you your preferred mocha. You, however, hold out cash first, preventing her from paying. No one in town could start sharing in your mother’s ‘sugar mommy’ theory.
Larissa didn’t question it. You always went back and forth paying for coffees and such. You stood and waited for your drinks, Larissa’s hands rested on her hips, “So what are we doing next?”
“The Martin’s are a local family that has an orchard, berry farm, and grows grapes. Pretty eclectic growing for these parts.” You explained, trying to ignore the sight of Sarah walking past the front window looking for you.
Larissa smiles and probes a little deeper. She loved getting you talking about plants, “And what do they need help with?”
You see her step a little closer, blocking your vision of the front door. You look up at her and she is leaning forward in anticipation, looking for an answer from you, “They are worried about fertilizer amounts. They want me to take a look at the current fertility levels. Now that I’m home, it’s easier than sending it in to the state university or extension to have it checked.”
“Weems.” Larissa’s name was called as the coffee ms were placed at the end of the counter. The bell rang as the front door opened. Larissa was still blocking the door from your view and she glanced over her shoulder first. As she turned back to look at your, her eyes got wide and she gave you an ‘I’m sorry’ look. She moved out of the way to get the coffees, leaving you in line of sight for Sarah to see.
You acted like you were raised to: you smiled and gave a small wave. Sarah, of course, takes that as a cue, coming over to speak with you, “Well, well, if it isn’t Fern Rogers. Finally back home, I see.”
“Summer break. I had to come home to visit mom and dad.” You were internally kicking yourself for how fake your tone sounded. You would have thought she was a long lost friend or something.
Larissa comes to stand over your shoulder, carrying your coffee but not saying a word. Sarah looked up Larissa. You thought Sarah was tall when you dated, but Larissa of course was a whole different level. Yet Sarah’s voice exuded confidence as she spoke “And who is this?”
“This is my- This is Larissa. My-”
Larissa cuts you off, pushing the mocha into your hands and holding out her now free hand to Sarah, “Fiancé.”
———
“Fuck. Why did you do that?”
“Do what?” Larissa played dumb.
“Rissa…” You tried to push down the anger and keep it bottled, but it was becoming increasingly difficult, “Want to know how small my town is? My mother will call me in the next hour or so because she has gotten word THAT WE ARE MOTHERFUCKING ENGAGED.”
You gripped the steering wheel. You pulled off to the side of the road outside of the Martin property. You had never yelled at Larissa like this before. Never had she done something so stupid.
Larissa wasn’t going to sit there and take being yelled at, however, “I was helping! Fiancé sounds so much better than girlfriend. We really stuck it to that bit-”
“Larissa! I don’t care about her! Oh my god, I could give it a shit, but this is huge. Oh my god… Oh my god…” Your head falls to the top of the steering wheel. You wanted to dig a deep hole and lay in it. You mother was going to find out at any moment. Then what were you supposed to say?
It had been a half hour. Your phone started ringing on the seat next to you. Your mother’s face popped up on the screen. You thought you might vomit.
You couldn’t ignore it. You press the green button and put it on speakerphone to listen to your mother’s words, “Engaged? Fern Elizabeth Rogers! You have been home for two whole days and you haven’t mentioned a word of this!”
“Mom, I can-”
She didn’t care what you had to say, “You may be an adult now, but you know that this is absolutely reprehensible! I don’t know what is going on with you, but I’m beginning to question the type of person Larissa is! You haven’t been dating even a year yet, and now you are going to get married? I want you home young lady, immediately!”
The line went dead and you glanced at Larissa, “Do we get fake engaged or do you want to tell them the truth?”

Many inventive theories attempt to explain why ovulatory signals disappeared in the human line, but none of them, in my opinion, propose an advantage so sterling that it offsets the abandonment of the premier genereplicating method used by millions of species over millions of years—females signaling males their sexual readiness at the same moment they are ovulating.
The few species of primates that do not ostensibly signal ovulation are distant from the human line on the evolutionary primate-branching bush. A few other species' females also do not appear to advertise their ovulation—for example, some birds, such as mallards—but the problem of knowing for sure is exacerbated by the fact that human observers can't ask the males of these species whether or not they are aware of the females' ovulation.
Among the more ingenious explanations for why sexual signaling disappeared in humans is the one proposed by anthropologist Nancy Burley. Women lost the ability to monitor their ovulatory moment, according to Burley because those who grasped the connection between sex and pregnancy realized that pain, possible death, and taxing demands were also part of the deal.
A woman so enlightened, Burley theorizes, might prudently decide to abstain from sex . Celibates do not leave offspring. Selection pressure would, therefore, favor those women who were unaware of their ovulation.
Primatologist Sarah Blaffer Hardy proposes that infantile murder coaxed human cryptic ovulation into being in a theory known as the “many fathers.”
Having carefully documented the horrifying fact that male primates some¬ times killed infants, Hardy posits that the loss of external signs of ovulation ultimately protected newborns by keeping all parties guessing concerning the issue of paternity especially males. Unsure whether an infant was due to his copulatory efforts, a male would be less inclined to kill it.
Hardy worked primarily with hanuman langurs, but other studies, including Jane Goodall's chimpanzees in the wild and Alison Jolly's ring-tailed lemurs, have confirmed that males commit infanticide in these species. To date, thirty-five species of primates have been identified in which strange males kill infants.
Social scientists Margo Wilson and Martin Daly found suggestive evidence that this abhorrent practice exists among humans. Surveying crime statistics, they noted that when an adult male murders a child he is sixty-five times more likely to be a stepfather or live-in boyfriend than the child's biological father.
Though I have great respect and admiration for Hardy's work, I wonder whether her theory is the whole story If infanticide was so great a threat to the continuation of affected primate species, why did only the human line adopt the evolutionary strategy of cryptic ovulation to solve the problem?
Chimpanzees, for whom infanticide is a serious problem, have not evolved anything resembling cryptic ovulation. Bonobo males have never been observed to engage in killing infants, yet bonobo female primates come closest to mimicking the human female's reproductive model of loss of estrus and increased sexual receptivity.
The observation that strange males do the killing is in keeping with evolutionary theory. Alpha maledom often does not last very long. A strange male who achieves dominance must make hay while the sun shines. By killing the sucklings of his new group, he can precipitate estrus among the distressed mothers and thus increase his chances of spreading his genes.
Among human populations, it has been a common strategy of conquering armies, after beheading the losing side's warriors, to turn their attention to killing the infants who the conquerors know were fathered by those warriors. This slaughter of the innocents has been amply recorded at different times in disparate locales throughout history. Cryptic ovulation has rarely protected infants of the conquered women from being killed by strangers.
If keeping the male uncertain concerning paternity increases the life span of children, what would be the advantage to the female of remaining in the dark on such a vital issue as her own ovulation?
Another question: The male primates that engage in the practice of infanticide do not seem to care one fig about the offspring they do sire. Since the majority of infanticide is carried out by recently arrived males that are strangers to the group, it would be safe to assume that these animals are equipped with an instinct to kill the infant of any strange female.
Hardy's theory rests on the assumption that a male primate is capable of making the causal connection between sex and birth, either instinctually or consciously. There is minimal scientific evidence to indicate that this quantum leap in logic has occurred in the mind of another species besides a human.
Another problem: Since knowing when a female ovulates is critical to a male's fitness, why did not the human male develop a compensatory counteradaptation to detect the female's ovaries' subterfuge?
Many other theories abound. Donald Symons suggests women use their year-round sexual receptivity to seduce philanderers in exchange for gifts . L. Benshoof and Randy Thornhill propose that cryptic ovulation allows a woman to mate by stealth with a superior man without alerting her husband.
Though the theories outlined above may have been contributing factors in reprogramming Gyna sapiens ’reproductive cycle, they do not seem to offer sturdy enough reasons to explain the origin of such drastic changes in her life strategy.
The rarity of concealed ovulation among the other three million sexually reproducing species suggests that cryptic ovulation is not a mainline solution to any of the problems posed by the various theories.
The primary consequence of cryptic ovulation—the need for increased sexual contact to coincide with ovulation's propitious moment—would appear to be highly disadvantageous, evolutionarily speaking.
In the cold calculus of energy conservation, copulation is both dangerous and a very expensive metabolic activity An ancestral couple in flagrante delicto would have been very vulnerable to a predator. Sex consumes time, calories, resources, and mental effort that might better be used for survival. With a few notable exceptions, other creatures expend minimal time and energy copulating. The mating act of most birds and mammals can be measured in seconds.
The human investment, in terms of time spent thinking about sex, planning, wooing, and actually engaging in the act, exceeds that of any other creature. After their strenuous coitus, humans generally require a longer recovery interval than any other animal.
Additionally without a visible or olfactory lodestar, men and women have found it necessary to engage in frequent, capricious copulations throughout the year to increase the likelihood of pregnancy.
The uncertainty of conception, both for those who yearn for it and those who don't, has been among men's and women's most consistent causes of stress, anguish, and anxiety down through the generations.
Evolutionary processes do not care whether an organism is happy or not. Nevertheless, stress tends to diminish an organism's fitness.
Nonestral females of other species, with rare exception, do not appear to begrudge the attentions estral females receive from excited males. When Gyna sapiens lost estrus and gained the ability to engage in sex anytime throughout the year (if she so desired), the nettlesome problem of sexual jealousy among women reared its ugly head.
The green-eyed monster consumes a staggering waste of spirit and is virtually unknown among other species.
Cryptic ovulation and year-round sexual receptivity also greatly increased the amount and degree of jealousy among many men.
Societies have had to construct draconian legal, social, religious, and cultural barriers to regulate members' sexual competition and minimize the outbreak of violence. Duels, dogmas, eunuchs, taboos, so-called honor killings, chastity belts, and female genital mutilation are just a few of the rituals and devices that attest to the difficulty men have had in dealing with women's robust sexual capability.
Desmond Morris in his book The Naked Ape makes the argument that humans are the first species to elevate sex to the status of a recreational activity’ Morris speculates, “The vast bulk of copulation in our species is obvi¬ ously concerned, not with producing offspring, but with cementing the pair bond by providing mutual rewards for the sexual partners ."
According to this argument, endorsed by many others besides Morris, we are Homo ludens (the Playful Ape) and we have liberated sex from the depths of the Minotaurean labyrinth! in the brain's primitive limbic system of instinctual drives.
By elevating sex to the brain's higher, neocortical planes, according to these authors, we have created a new kind of sex. Proponents argue that the pleasure we so derive and the love that enhances the deep human commitments more than offsets any of the disadvantages of drastic changes in sexual programming.

A small collection
I do still intend to keep writing the other more detailed How to spot guides for each MBTI type individually, but in the meantime, I collected some interviews with several people of each type that you can click through and maybe it helps you see the similarities not just of the people of the same type, but also based on the high functions that they share. I also tried to not exclusively use native English speakers because I’m personally a bit fed up with the anglocentrism of this site and the internet in general (though of course I’m also constrained in my choices here that I can only use people that I know of, which are mostly European), but if I could find some, I included interviews of them speaking both English and their native language. Even if you don’t understand that language, I still recommend looking into those interviews. Not understanding what someone is saying can sometimes actually help focussing on their body language itself.

WK S7 Prediction: Clever the Raven.
Episode 2 of the 7th season of Wild Kratts will be titled, Clever the Raven.
The Tortuga is parked in the Great North and some strange noises have Koki thinking it's time for a diagnostic overhaul. As they are near Little Howler's pack territory, the bros decide to try to find the wolf pack. Unexpectedly, a raven joins Martin and Chris on their adventure and the brothers soon learn about the incredible intelligence and ingenuity of the raven.
This episode was the first of the new season to be announced. I believe it was in an interview with Jane Goodall [yes, that Jane Goodall] a few weeks before Cats and Dogs started airing on television. They said they'd do eps. about the intelligence of ravens and crows so maybe they'll be doing a crow episode later on? My prediction of it being the Season 7 premiere seems to be wrong but eh, I'm not even that phased.
The geography of Little Howler's pack is so confusing. In Season 1 they're in the temperate forest, most likely in midwest North America. Then in Seasons 5 and 6 he apparently moved up north to Alaska?? Are they just gonna go with that retcon in S7, or are they going to have the "Great North" be a completely different turf than what we've seen? This has the same energy as the numerous Corpanga-origin retcons in Boy Meets World. Ugh I'm putting more thought into this than the show itself is doing, aren't I?
I'm kinda hoping that Little Howler ages here? I think there should be an episode in itself about the baby animals growing up and showing how that's a part of every creature's life cycle. The show has aged up its animal characters before like with T-Bone, Fluffy Flier, Baby Tooth, and Kid Musky, so I don't see a reason why they can't do the same with others.
The Molly of Denali crossover with Wild Kratts showed the Kratts looking for a wolf pack. Was this episode made specifically to pay tribute to that episode? Either way, I can't overlook this and it's probably a coincidence, but it's really nice.
Ok but seriously, this show is doing the Lord's work by showcasing the underrated and misunderstood genius/incarnates that are ravens. They've been known to have a very good memory, are extremely empathetic, and they're actually creature rescuers, help animals in need, or even protect humans. They're one of the most intelligent and dangerous avians in the creature world and don't act like this show isn't going to do them the justice they deserve! I'm probably getting my hopes up too high, but I think I'm going to have a very pleasant viewing experience with this.
