Why You Should Listen To McGillicuddy And Murder’s Pawn Shop

McGillicuddy And Murder’s Pawn Shop is a supernatural fiction podcast set in 1921 taking the format of the diary belonging to Melinda Maudie Merkle. Maude has a terribly boring life as a typist, and one of her only sources of joy is going every so often to a pawn shop, McGillicuddy & Murder’s. One day, she comes across a broken piece of china with a blue eye on it. After coming home with the eye, strange things begin to happen, and she finds herself immersed in a world of wonder and horror and magic. An adventure, at last. Though perhaps not quite how she imagined it.

The podcast is complete with 5 seasons. The first two have episodes of 10 minutes each before switching to 20 minute episodes for the remainder.

If you like The Antique Shop, you will like this. If you love the Toy Soldier from The Mechanisms, you will like this.

Where there is so much fiction with tragedy and grimdark and the deathly feeling of “sometimes bad things happen to good people, and there is nothing you can do to stop that”, McGillicuddy And Murder’s Pawn Shop comes with a sense of deep hope. Sometimes, plans will work. Sometimes, good things can just happen. No one is doomed by their past selves. Everyone can work to become better. Everyone has the potential for great happiness.

It’s a show about finding yourself and surrounding yourself with those you love and trust. It’s about healing into a new person. It’s about how, sometimes, with effort, things can work out for the better.

Now, some McGillicuddy And Murder’s Pawn Shop things I enjoy in no particular order:

- Maude is a delight. She’s such a fun character, always an optimist, sometimes terribly nervous, and always a wonderful POV character. Seeing her journey is a joy. 

- WRATH. If you follow me, you’ve probably seen me post incessantly about Hester “Wrath” Rathbone, a man once trapped in a wooden train car, now mad and out for revenge. Wrath has such a wonderful journey, so much character development, and is a joy every moment.

- Queer storylines that interact with the time period and internalized queerphobia in a lovely way.

- Queer storylines focusing on self discovery instead of romance.

- Friendships and community held in equal or higher standing to romance.

- A character choosing to leave someone they love because of how much they were hurt by them for the sake of their future happiness, prioritizing themself in that situation.

- Really great phrasing?? I’m not sure how to put this, but the lines are often so pleasant to the ear. Night Enthusiasts. This way to find the bodies. Magic Unusuals.

- POSITIVE VIBES

- Wrath again. Not sorry. I love this man wholeheartedly.

- “Are you happy?” “No.” “Have you ever walked on the bottom of the ocean?” “No.” “Have you ever died?” “No.” “By the end of the night, you will be able to answer yes to all three questions.”

- Situational Enemies to Treasured Friends

- Wrath is going to make crepes

- A Black character of the time dealing with and bringing up some of the absolutely horrific racist stuff going on in the 1920s, which I personally hadn’t seen in a historical fiction piece with a white main character. Not the focus of the podcast, but I wanted to point it out here. (Comes up in late s4, early s5, I believe.)

- Power corrupting people, cutting off pieces of yourself in pursuit of power.

- Really interesting worldbuilding.

I highly, highly recommend it. I have felt many emotions including great joy listening, and I need someone other than me to write fanfiction for it because I posted the first work for it on Ao3, and that’s unacceptable.

MCGILLICUDDY AND MURDER’S PAWN SHOP REALLY SAID HEALING IS A PROCESS, HAPPINESS IS ACHIEVABLE, BECOMING BETTER IS WORK, AND SOMETIMES GOOD THINGS JUST HAPPEN.

WRATH IS SO CLEVER I LOVE HIM. Man always has a plan but is also great at changing his plans on the fly. This is in such good contrast to Maude, who is fairly straightforward and doesn’t have a great sense of planning several steps ahead. And she makes that work well by surrounding herself with others who have a better view of the other aspects of various issues and concepts.
