Every hour, a woman in Afghanistan loses her life during childbirth

It was midnight when another wave of pain struck. Begum, 35, thought it was finally time for her child to be born, but there were no signs of the baby coming.

“I woke my husband and told him to get a car to go to a hospital. He rented one from our neighbours,” Begum said.

The mother of four travelled while in labour from Ridkhord area in Badakhshan’s Zibak district to the Shahid Ustad Burhanuddin Rabbani Hospital in the provincial capital Faizabad.

Her fifth child, struggling to be born, did not survive the journey.

Begum lived, but many mothers in similar circumstances do not.

Abdullah is currently waiting to hear if his wife will survive their child’s birth.

He and his wife, residents of the province’s Yafta-e-Bala area, came on foot to the central hospital in Faizabad when their baby was due to be born.

“In Yaftal-e-Bala, there are four health centres. However, because of inadequate medical facilities and no doctor available, we had to walk for four or five hours to Faizabad for delivery,” Abdullah said.

“We encountered many challenges along the way, but I couldn’t do much until we reached the hospital.”

Doctors said that because his wife had walked a long distance, it led to severe bleeding and possibly harmed the baby in the womb.

“The mother’s condition is not good and there is little hope for the baby to survive,” Abdullah said doctors told him.

Afghanistan’s deadly statistics for mothers

According to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) report, each day 24 mothers and 167 newborns in Afghanistan lose their lives due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

It’s the highest rate in the world.

“The condition of mothers is highly alarming, particularly for those who travel from remote areas and cover long distances,” a specialist at the Shahid Ustad Burhanuddin Rabbani Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Having worked in Badakhshan for 22 years, the doctor said that the shortage of healthcare services, especially in remote areas, leads to significant health risks for women.

He recalled a patient who arrived at the hospital from Darwaz district about a month ago after travelling for three days.

“Due to the long journey, the patient’s womb had ruptured along the way, leading to the loss of the baby. The doctors only managed to save the mother’s life with great difficulty,” he said.

Discrimination leading to more deaths

There are concerns the situation is only getting worse as the Taliban place more restrictions on women’s mobility and access to support, and the weakened economy sees healthcare facilities struggle to deliver services.

The WHO reported that in 2023, about 428 health centres were closed because of budget constraints.

Dr Suraya Dalil, WHO’s Director of the Special Programe for Primary Health Care and former Minister of Health in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2014, said that Afghanistan has become one of the most perilous countries for mothers due to insufficient healthcare resources.

Dr Dalil told Rukhshana Media that the Taliban’s discriminatory policies make women more vulnerable in accessing healthcare.

“There is a regime in Afghanistan that systematically discriminates against women. For instance, a few months ago, a directive was sent to the central hospital in Ghazni province stating that women without a male companion would not receive treatment,” she said.

“Similarly, in Herat, a directive was issued prohibiting ultrasound services for women at the central hospital.”

She said that ultrasound examinations are crucial for diagnosis and timely treatment decisions, services that have unfortunately been restricted for women.

Recently, the Taliban supreme leader issued an order for all female employees to receive a reduced monthly salary.

“Recently, we’ve witnessed female employees being allocated a monthly salary of only 5,000 afghanis (US$70), disregarding their rank, experience, and job responsibilities solely because they are women. This is systemic discrimination,” she said.

“The impact of the Taliban’s actions on women extends beyond just health issues. It has multidimensional implications.”

Health professionals strike over reduced salaries

This month several doctors, nurses, and midwives in Kabul hospitals staged a strike in protest of this decision by the Taliban leadership.

At least four female doctors and staff from hospitals such as Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan, Shaikh Zahid, and Sehat-e-Tefl, speaking to Rukhshana Media,  said they cannot meet their basic living needs with the salary recently set by the Taliban for all female employees.

Homa*, a physician at Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan hospital, said their protest lasted only three hours after the hospital’s Taliban-appointed director dispersed them with threats.

Orphaned children left to raise each other

Hanifa, 21, a resident of Sarjai area of Panjab district of Bamyan province now takes care of her two younger sisters and two younger brothers after the death of their mother.

She said that there are no clinics in their village or nearby areas, which is why her mother had to give birth at home.

“My poor mother cried in pain, clutching her back, yet she continued to bake bread. With my father and two brothers away working on farmlands, there was no man at home. My mother, assisted by our neighbor, who was a local woman, gave birth at home,” she said.

“She always delivered her children at home and was used to it, but this time, one of the twins didn’t come out, and her bleeding was so severe that the entire house was stained with blood.

“After giving birth, my mother survived only two hours. Despite our efforts, we couldn’t deliver the second twin because there was no accessible vehicle, and my father wasn’t home to help us.

“When my mother realized her bleeding wouldn’t stop, she urged us to take good care of her daughter, who was a baby girl. She remained conscious for two hours, growing weaker with each passing moment until she eventually lost consciousness.”

Karima Sadiq* a gynecologist specializing in obstetrics in remote areas, said stories like these are increasingly common.

“Sadly, since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, I have witnessed a rise in maternal deaths during childbirth, particularly in villages and districts. Every 24 hours, 24 to 26 mothers are losing their lives during childbirth, highlighting a disturbingly high maternal mortality rate.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) recently reported that one-third of women in Afghanistan give birth without access to essential healthcare facilities, and only around 67 percent of deliveries in Afghanistan are supervised by healthcare professionals.

According to UNICEF’s report, it is recommended that pregnant women visit a doctor at least four times before delivery, but only a third of women in Afghanistan adhere to this recommendation.

UNICEF stated that that if a mother gives birth outside of a healthcare facility and without access to a skilled health professional, her life is significantly endangered.

L’accordo tra il Parlamento europeo e il Consiglio dell’Unione europea sul portafoglio di identità digitale dell’UE è soggetto ad abusi e dà a Bruxelles la capacità di negare i diritti delle persone e di controllarli.

Secondo la nuova normativa europea, i portafogli, che per ora saranno volontari, conterranno le versioni digitali di tutte le carte d'identità, patenti di guida, certificati di laurea e documentazione medica. la mossa minaccia di fatto i valori europei, come sostenuto da 504 accademici ed esperti di 39 paesi che hanno firmato una lettera aperta che mette in guardia sui pericoli per la sicurezza e la libertà online delle persone.

Avere tutti i documenti in un unico posto significa che possono essere confiscati con un clic. Ciò è stato fatto dall’amministrazione Trudeau in Canada quando, durante il Covid, ha negato l’accesso ai propri conti a coloro che rifiutavano il vaccino e in seguito ha rimosso i diritti assicurativi agli automobilisti che partecipavano al blocco di protesta della capitale Ottawa. Significa anche che gli Stati membri iniziano a perdere il diritto esclusivo di revocare la documentazione rilasciata. Anche Bruxelles potrà farlo. Bruxelles e il commissario Breton vogliono andare ancora oltre introducendo la valuta digitale dell’euro. ( Breton è il commissario che cerca di censurare i social media).

Se le questioni finanziarie finiscono in questo portafoglio, sarà facilitato un maggiore controllo sulla vita delle persone con la possibilità di introdurre un sistema di crediti sociali o di sanzioni elettroniche per coloro che partecipano alle proteste.

Un sistema di questo tipo consentirà inoltre alle autorità di controllare il modo in cui le persone spendono i propri soldi , come è accaduto in Canada e Brasile. La valuta digitale semplifica gli affari, ma è anche uno strumento per eliminare i nostri diritti alla privacy.

Nel giorno dall'anniversario del colpo di Stato in Cile (11 settembre 1973) è interessante mostrare attraverso documenti ufficiali di quali appoggi godesse il criminale fascista Augusto Pinochet oltre a quello degli Stati Uniti e della CIA.

WikiLeaks anni fa infatti ha rivelato i legami tra il Vaticano e la dittatura che rovesciò il presidente socialista Salvador Allende ed il suo governo popolare eletto democraticamente.

Secondo il quotidiano spagnolo Publico.es, si tratta di un documento segreto datato 18 ottobre 1973, in cui il sostituto del segretario di Stato vaticano, Giovanni Benelli, manifestava ai diplomatici statunitensi “la sua grave preoccupazione e quella di Papa Paolo VI, riguardo la vincente campagna internazionale della sinistra per distorcere la realtà della situazione cilena".

Il giornale spagnolo scriveva che in quella data: “Benelli era di fatto il numero due del Papa, poiché il Segretario di Stato, il Cardinale Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, era troppo vecchio per adempiere alla maggior parte delle sue funzioni e quindi aveva consegnato l'incarico al suo sostituto. In tal modo questo fiorentino lavorò a stretto contatto per un decennio con papa Paolo VI fino a guadagnarsi il soprannome del "Kissinger del Vaticano" per la sua gestione aggressiva, quasi autoritaria, a capo della diplomazia della Santa Sede".

"Benelli era così importante in Vaticano, che fu lui in persona a ricevere Richard Nixon ai piedi dell'elicottero con cui il presidente degli Stati Uniti atterrò in Piazza San Pietro nel 1969 per sigillare l'alleanza anticomunista tra la Casa Bianca e la Santa Sede la quale diede origine ai più crudeli colpi di stato militari in America Latina. Dopo il colpo di stato di Pinochet, Benelli considerava esagerata la copertura degli eventi in Cile definendola forse il più grande successo della propaganda comunista ed era preoccupato del fatto che anche i circoli moderati e conservatori sembravano disposti a credere alle bugie più gravi sui crimini del governo cileno di Pinochet", scrisse l'Ambasciata degli Stati Uniti a Roma nel suo rapporto classificato come SEGRETO e con il codice EXDIS "di massima riservatezza".

Benelli aggiungeva che "Le forze di sinistra, resesi conto che la caduta di Allende era stata una delle più grandi battute d'arresto per la causa comunista, hanno cercato di convincere il mondo che la caduta di Allende era dovuta esclusivamente alle forze fasciste ed esterne, piuttosto che ai fallimenti della sua stessa gestione politica" Benelli esprimeva anche il timore che il successo di questa campagna di propaganda comunista avrebbe potuto influenzare i media del mondo libero in futuro" continua il documento statunitense.

"I racconti dei media internazionali che parlano di una brutale repressione in Cile non hanno fondamento”, affermava il numero due del papa.

Per quanto riguarda la repressione del regime militare di Pinochet, dichiarava: "Naturalmente, purtroppo, dopo un colpo di Stato, dobbiamo ammettere che c'è stato qualche spargimento di sangue nelle operazioni di pulizia in Cile, ma la Nunziatura a Santiago, il cardinale Silva e l'episcopato cileno in generale hanno assicurato a papa Paolo VI che la Giunta militare sta facendo tutto il possibile per riportare la situazione alla normalità e che le storie dei media internazionali che parlano di brutale repressione sono infondate".

Secondo la pubblicazione, Benelli (che era candidato ad essere papa dopo la morte di Paolo VI e Giovanni Paolo I) sosteneva che "non si poteva mettere in dubbio la validità o la sincerità del Cardinale Silva". Sempre secondo Benelli il papa fu sottoposto a forti pressioni interne nella Chiesa, specialmente dalla Francia, per esprimersi contro gli eccessi della Giunta militare di Pinochet e nonostante gli sforzi del Vaticano, la propaganda di sinistra aveva avuto un notevole successo anche con alcuni dei cardinali più conservatori e con molti prelati che sembrano incapaci di considerare la situazione in modo obiettivo. Il risultato era che la sinistra (sempre secondo Benelli) era riuscita a creare una situazione in cui il Papa sarebbe stato attaccato dai moderati se avesse difeso la verità in Cile.

"Il Vaticano è convinto, e la Nunziatura ha confermato, che durante gli ultimi mesi del governo di Allende, l'Ambasciata cubana stava fungendo da arsenale per distribuire armi fabbricate in Europa orientale ai lavoratori cileni", afferma Benelli.

Il rapporto segreto dell'ambasciata degli Stati Uniti in Vaticano si conclude con una breve frase:

“La scorsa settimana il Vaticano ha informato un intermediario di sinistra che il Papa non poteva ricevere Isabel Allende, e Benelli ha paura che questo possa provocare ulteriori critiche contro il Vaticano".

Monday, July 1, was a busy day. That morning the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Donald J. Trump v. United States that gives the president absolute immunity for committing crimes while engaging in official acts. On the same day, Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon began a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress at a low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. Before he began serving his sentence, he swore he would “be more powerful in prison than I am now.” 

“On July 2, Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, went onto Bannon’s webcast War Room to hearten Bannon’s right-wing followers after Bannon’s incarceration. Former representative Dave Brat (R-VA) was sitting in for Bannon and conducted the interview.  

“[W]e are going to win,” Roberts told them. “We're in the process of taking this country back…. We ought to be really encouraged by what happened yesterday. And in spite of all of the injustice, which, of course, friends and audience of this show, of our friend Steve know, we are going to prevail.”

“That Supreme Court ruling yesterday on immunity is vital, and it's vital for a lot of reasons,” Roberts said, adding that the nation needs a strong leader because “the radical left…has taken over our institutions.” “[W]e are in the process of the second American Revolution,” he said, “which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

Roberts took over the presidency of the Heritage Foundation in 2021, and he shifted it from a conservative think tank to an organization devoted to “institutionalizing Trumpism.” Central to that project for Roberts has been working to bring the policies of Hungary’s president Viktor Orbán, a close ally of Russia’s president Vladimir Putin, to the United States. 

In 2023, Roberts brought the Heritage Foundation into a formal partnership with Hungary’s Danube Institute, a think tank overseen by a foundation that is directly funded by the Hungarian government; as journalist Casey Michel reported, it is, “for all intents and purposes, a state-funded front for pushing pro-Orbán rhetoric.” The Danube Institute has given grants to far-right figures in the U.S., and, Michel noted in March, “we have no idea how much funding may be flowing directly from Orbán’s regime to the Heritage Foundation.” Roberts has called modern Hungary “not just a model for conservative statecraft but the model.”

Orbán has been open about his determination to overthrow the concept of western democracy and replace it with what he has, on different occasions, called “illiberal democracy” or “Christian democracy.” He wants to replace the multiculturalism at the heart of democracy with Christian culture, stop the immigration that he believes undermines Hungarian culture, and reject “adaptable family models” in favor of “the Christian family model.” He is moving Hungary away from the stabilizing international systems supported by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

No matter what he calls it, Orbán’s model is not democracy at all. As soon as he retook office in 2010, he began to establish control over the media, cracking down on those critical of his far-right political party, Fidesz, and rewarding those who toed the party line. In 2012 his supporters rewrote the country’s constitution to strengthen his hand, and extreme gerrymandering gave his party more power while changes to election rules benefited his campaigns. Increasingly, he used the power of the state to concentrate wealth among his cronies, and he reworked the country’s judicial system and civil service system to stack it with his loyalists, who attacked immigrants, women, and the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. While Hungary still holds elections, state control of the media and the apparatus of voting means that it is impossible for the people of Hungary to remove him from power.

Trump supporters have long admired Orbán’s nationalism and centering of Christianity, while the fact that Hungary continues to have elections enables them to pretend that the country remains a democracy.

The tight cooperation between Heritage and Orbán illuminates Project 2025, the blueprint for a new kind of government dictated by Trump or a Trump-like figure. In January 2024, Roberts told Lulu Garcia-Navarro of the New York Times that Project 2025 was designed to jump-start a right-wing takeover of the government. “[T]he Trump administration, with the best of intentions, simply got a slow start,” Roberts said. “And Heritage and our allies in Project 2025 believe that must never be repeated.”

Project 2025 stands on four principles that it says the country must embrace: the U.S. must “[r]estore the family as the centerpiece of American life and protect our children”; “[d]ismantle the administrative state and return self-governance to the American people”; “[d]efend our nation’s sovereignty, borders, and bounty against global threats”; and “[s]ecure our God-given individual rights to live freely—what our Constitution calls ‘the Blessings of Liberty.’”

In almost 1,000 pages, the document explains what these policies mean for ordinary Americans. Restoring the family and protecting children means using “government power…to restore the American family.” That, the document says, means eliminating any words associated with sexual orientation or gender identity, gender, abortion, reproductive health, or reproductive rights from any government rule, regulation, or law. Any reference to transgenderism is “pornography” and must be banned. 

The overturning of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized the right to abortion must be gratefully celebrated, the document says, but the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision accomplishing that end “is just the beginning.” 

Dismantling the administrative state starts from the premise that “people are policy.” Frustrated because nonpartisan civil employees thwarted much of Trump’s agenda in his first term, the authors of Project 2025 call for firing much of the current government workforce—about 2 million people work for the U.S. government—and replacing it with loyalists who will carry out a right-wing president’s demands. 

The plan asserts “the existential need” for an authoritarian leader to dismantle the current government that regulates business, provides a social safety net, and protects civil rights. Instead of the government Americans have built since 1933, the plan says the national government must “decentralize and privatize as much as possible” and leave “the great majority of domestic activities to state, local, and private governance.”

It attacks “America’s largest corporations, its public institutions, and its popular culture,” for their embrace of international organizations like the United Nations and the European Union and for their willingness to work with other countries. It calls for abandoning all of those partnerships and alliances. 

Also on July 1, Orbán took over the rotating presidency of the European Union. He will be operating for six months in that position under a slogan taken from Trump and adapted to Europe: “Make Europe Great Again.” The day before taking that office, Orbán announced that his political party was forming a new alliance with far-right parties in Austria and the Czech Republic in order to launch a “new era of European politics.”

Tomorrow, Orbán will travel to Moscow to meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin. On July 2, Orbán met with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, where he urged Zelensky to accept a “ceasefire.” In the U.S., Trump’s team has suggested that, if reelected, Trump will call for an immediate ceasefire and will negotiate with Putin over how much of Ukraine Putin can keep while also rejecting Ukraine for NATO membership and scaling back U.S. commitment to NATO. 

“I would expect a very quick end to the conflict,” Kevin Roberts said. Putin says he supports Trump’s plan. 

Roberts’s “second American revolution,” which would destroy American democracy in an echo of a small-time dictator like Orbán and align our country with authoritarian leaders, seems a lot less patriotic than the first American Revolution. 

For my part, I will stand with the words written 248 years ago today, saying that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

La cultura del nulla.

Partirei col dire che oggi che è il giorno della memoria 'corta' ci si è dimenticati di una lezione dura, come detto altre volte non impariamo dai nostri errori, sapendo che l'olocausto non fu solo per gli ebrei ma anche per tutte quelle minoranze che non andavano bene al regime nazista come i nomadi, gli omosessuali e quelli dalla pelle non bianca, ma di norma questo giorno viene considerato solo per gli ebrei. Quei poveri cristi gassati o uccisi male non hanno niente a che fare con quello che sta succedendo adesso tra israele e la palestina, netanyahu e compagnia bella non sono gli stessi, decisamente, e su questo e quello che c'è attorno ci sarebbe molto da dire, ma mi fermo qua perché il post non è dedicato a loro o al massacro che stanno facendo da mesi sotto gli occhi di tutti senza che nessuno che abbia un minimo di voce in capitolo faccia qualcosa.

Ieri si è aperta la stagione che vede Tartu (la città estone dove vivo) come capitale europea della cultura. Sono andato a prendere un caffè con la piccoletta che a fine mese si trasferisce in Svezia e abbiamo visto nel gelo della giornata parecchie persone vestite con i costumi tradizionali e in piazza c'era un palchetto con musica terribile, facevano le prove. Li per li pensavo che è legato a una delle loro celebrazioni, ho letto qualche post del compleanno del paese o qualcosa del genere, ma mi sbagliavo. Poi la sera arrivava da non molto lontano l'eco di musiche tecno e house a volumi esorbitanti e la mia compagna mi ha detto che è iniziato il periodo della cultura. Quale cultura? Questo paese al confine del mondo conosciuto, di fatto non viene mai calcolato nelle statistiche europee, nato da pochissimo, se si considera che si sono liberati dall'unione sovietica nel 91 e che gli anni 90 li hanno passati ad assestarsi, si può capire che in realtà il paese ha più o meno 25 anni, niente se si paragona a paesi europei come il nostro o altri che hanno contribuito alla storia e alla creazione di questa civiltà in declino. Ma in quegli anni i governi hanno puntato sulla tecnologia, avrete sentito che l'Estonia è una piccola silicon valley e fin qua niente da dire se si pensa che alcuni software di successo sono stati creati qua, skype e nod32 in testa, ma quello che hanno fatto è stato creare una società stile americano, degli stati uniti, ma assorbendo la parte peggiore quella del puritanesimo per avere una facciata bella ma con un interno vuoto e spesso orribile. Questo ha influenzato la cultura, ovviamente, che è stata messa da parte per dare al popolo l'idea che il lavoro sia una priorità assoluta e che tutto il resto è superfluo. C'è anche da non sottovalutare l'enorme gap che hanno questi paesi, quelli del ex blocco sovietico, in termini di tempo (furono inglobati nel 1940) e siccome i russi non volevano che niente di occidentale venisse venduto o riprodotto o consumato dai popoli sottomessi ecco che tutto quello che abbiamo avuto noi, a livello culturale artistico e letterario nel bene e nel male, loro non l'hanno visto. Recuperare 50 anni di storia e di cultura mondiale non è facile, anzi è quasi impossibile perché i periodi storici e i cambiamenti sociali e culturali si devono vivere e capire per poi progredire, loro no, una volta liberi hanno preso quello che pochi e avidi personaggi propinarono loro attraverso i media, quindi parecchio mainstream e qualcosa che recuperavano dagli anni precedenti, per farvi un esempio quelli della mia età e più grandi ricordano con amore i nostri cantanti come Toto Cutugno, Al bano e Romina i ricchi e poveri e tutti quelli di quei San Remo primi anni 80, io dico che i russi li torturavano con il festival come battuta ma in pochi la capiscono perché il nostro festival non lo conosce quasi nessuno, è una cosa prettamente nostra e soprattutto poco esportabile. Si può capire da questa piccola storiella come l'interesse per le arti in generale non sia una priorità per l'estone medio, per carità ho conosciuto persone che hanno una buona cultura musicale, visto che sono del ramo, molti conoscono l'arte e così via, ma perché sono anche loro nel campo ed è logico che prendendo una nicchia cercano di esplorarla il più possibile, anche grazie al mezzo internet. Ma mi è capitato anche di parlare con persone che non conoscono neanche i loro di cantanti, non dico nomi astrusi di nicchia stranieri, ma neanche quelli locali che ve li sbattono ovunque in tutte le salse? Questo la dice lunga quanto sia bassissimo l'interesse.

Quindi la domanda è : Quale cultura andate a celebrare in questo periodo visto che siete la città della cultura europea? Se poi considerate che schifate lo straniero e quindi non tollerate altre forme culturali, cosa andate a mostrare? La cultura dell'alcol? O quanto siete copia e incolla fatto male di un mondo che non ha niente a che vedere con l'Europa?

Questo è a grandi linee un paese che sulla carta è moderno e innovatore, ma che se sposti la carta vedi tanto di quel marcio che diresti 'Ok, statevi per fatti vostri per altri 150 anni poi ne riparliamo'. A me non frega molto fra 2 settimane torno in Trinacria per un periodo XY a rigenerarmi da tutto questo e non so neanche se tornerò più a vivere qua, ma questo dipende molto da come si mettono le cose con lei. The far right’s historically high score in the first round of the French legislative elections was reflected in the alarmed headlines of major international media outlets. An “earthquake”, a “staggering collapse” authored by Emmanuel Macron’s “arrogance and disdain for his fellow citizens” were among the reactions. But despite the imminence of the potential catastrophe now facing France – the far right has never been as close to power since the collaborationist Vichy regime – many in the political centre still struggle with the idea of uniting to keep National Rally (RN) out.

Macron irresponsibly conflated the far right and the left during the campaign, claiming that the “two extremes” (right and left) would lead to “civil war”. His rhetoric falsely equated the hateful far right with a coalition of parties on the left (the New Popular Front, NFP) that aspires to equality and social justice. He even adopted the talking points of the far right to attack the left’s “immigrationist” programme.

Macron eventually called for a “broad democratic and republican coalition” in the second round to unite to block “the imminent danger of an absolute majority for the RN”. But it took time for even heavyweights in his party to heed him. Many have refused to withdraw, selfishly risking the election of RN candidates to parliament.

For Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the national assembly, blocking the RN was not enough of a reason to vote for France Unbowed (LFI), the leading party on the left. Finance minister Bruno Le Maire agreed, opposing the RN unless it meant voting for LFI.

The messaging from Macron’s Ensemble coalition has been mixed: the party announced that candidates would tactically withdraw from constituency races “in favour of candidates capable of defeating the National Rally and with whom we share the values of the Republic”. The statement’s ambiguity, apparently aimed at LFI, left the definition of republican values open to interpretation.

Over the past two years, LFI has faced constant criticism. The party’s clear stance against Islamophobia, in a context where hostility towards Muslims in France is normalised, is often maliciously characterised as a shameless bid to attract Muslim votes. Recently, accusations of antisemitism have intensified due to LFI’s strong support for protecting Palestinian lives in Gaza; the nomination of Rima Hassan, a French-Palestinian refugee, for the European elections; and some members’ refusal to label Hamas a terrorist group.

Like any form of racism, antisemitism is historically and structurally ingrained in France. It has found expression far too often (as have Islamophobia, sexism and transphobia) and LFI must continue to address and combat the antisemitism that persists within its ranks.

But the exclusionof an entire segment of the population is not part of LFI’s programme. According to a new report by the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights, “the majority of antisemitism is manifested among citizens on the right or far right”.

LFI, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a staunch critic of Macron, issued a clear directive ahead of the second round: “Nowhere will we allow the RN to prevail. Our stance is unequivocal: no votes, no seats for the RN.” LFI candidates withdrew from races where the RN posed a threat, including against Gérald Darmanin, the rightwing interior minister, who by contrast said he would abstain rather than give LFI his vote in a two-way contest with the RN.

Gabriel Attal, the prime minister, eventually came out with an explicit call on voters to block the RN even if that meant voting for LFI. While many candidates in Macron’s camp have withdrawn from races featuring LFI candidates, some have refused to do so, even at the risk of letting the RN win.

Yet every day brings new examples of the horror the country is plunging into and which an RN victory would exacerbate. Since the dissolution of parliament on 9 June, there has been an increase in racist and homophobic incidents. A Black woman insulted on camera by her white neighbours said the election had opened the floodgates to a climate of intolerance towards people of migrant heritage. A motorist who said he was an RN voter is alleged to have racially insulted and hit a school bus driver after a parking dispute in Val-de-Marne. Racist leaflets demanding that authorities “stop the Blacks” were distributed to residents of a small town in the Yvelines region of northern France. A bakery in Avignon that had hired a Black employee was targeted in an arson attack and daubed with racist graffiti. In Calais, there has been a spate of violent incidents against migrants. I could go on.

This is a foretaste of the kind of atmosphere the National Rally would make mainstream. According to the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights, the normalisation of racism is rising alongside support for the far right. That is hardly surprising when you consider that Mediapart and Libération have investigated RN candidates and have not had to dig far to find examples of the crudest forms of racism – including antiziganism, antisemitism and Islamophobia, sexism, homophobia, conspiracy theories and Nazi nostalgia – fuelling their social media feeds.

Marine Le Pen has managed to rebrand her party, but maintains strong ties with groups and builds allyship with European parties that are less cautious about hiding their extremism. She tries to distance herself from the legacy of the party co-founded by her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, with former Nazi collaborationists. He has long been accused of torturing civilians while serving as a paratrooper during the Algerian revolution and was convicted on charges of minimising the Holocaust.

But Le Pen’s party not only pursues a hardline anti-immigrant policy. It aims to create different categories of French nationals, stripping dual citizens of rights.

This is what the RN represents at its core and why it must be prevented from prevailing next Sunday. Stopping the far right takes courage and moral clarity: politicians need to put their individual interests aside in the interest of everyone. We cannot waver on our principles, and risk pushing France into a situation from which it will not recover. For those who are privileged, failing to do everything in their power to block the RN may seem acceptable. But they need to think about those millions whose lives are at risk.

“We’ll argue later” has become the motto of the leftwing parties that have coalesced against the far right. This should be applicable to everyone across the political spectrum who is capable of defeating the far right. The priority must be to make sure this party never crosses the threshold of power.

Ogni tanto ci tocca scrivere dei post scomodi. Lo si fa per sfida, lo so fa perché ci sembra utile farlo, lo si fa per togliersi un sassolino da una scarpa. Magari lo si fa perché ci sta antipatico qualcuno. Io voglio scriverlo perché detesto il conformismo. Ieri la squadra italiana di tennis ha vinto l’ambita Coppa Davis. Mi risulta che il tennista Jannik Sinner abbia chiesto e ottenuto la residenza fiscale a Montecarlo. Ora è fin troppo facile pensare che lo abbia fatto per non pagare le tasse allo Stato italiano a causa di un regime fiscale meno vantaggioso. Liberissimo di farlo, lo hanno fatto in tanti (sportivi, attori, anche artisti). Nel frattempo le televisioni, i media e l’universo mondo celebra i fasti del tennis italiano. Tutto nella norma: i soliti fantocci televisivi ci invitano a gioire e ammoniscono, più o meno subdolamente, che chi non lo fa è un disfattista, un provocatore, o peggio, uno sfigato. Sono lieto di appartenere a una di queste categorie, come potrete facilmente immaginare. È persino inutile sottolineare che trovo questa scelta assolutamente diseducativa e non degna di chi voglia rappresentare la sua nazione in una manifestazione sportiva di alto livello. Hamidreza Rouhi was a 19, avid biker, a university student and a model. He was shot and killed by security forces on November 17 in Shahr-e ziba, a neighborhood in the western part of Tehran.

His last instagram post reads: “If the internet gets shut down forever, I want this to be my last post: Long live women, Long live freedom, Long live Iran.”

State media initially claimed that Hamidreza was a member of the Basij militia of the Revolutionary Guards, blamed protesters for his killing, and called him a “martyr” as in the case of several other protesters.

They had to admit later that he was a protester after his friends exposed the lie by posting photos of him on social media showing him protesting and chanting.

“They killed Hamidreza and claimed him as a Basiji”, mourners chanted at his memorial service at Behesht-e Zahra three days after his death.

"Despite the heavy presence of repression agents at Behesht Zahra [cemetery] from the early hours of the morning, a large number of participants managed to gather for this ceremony," a participant told IranWire.

In Corea del Nord è stata eseguita la condanna a morte di un ragazzo di 22 anni giudicato colpevole di aver visto film sudcoreani e ascoltato musica come il k-pop – genere musicale sudcoreano mescolato o ispirato alla musica pop statunitense – in violazione della legge che vieta di farlo. Lo ha evidenziato l’ultimo rapporto sui diritti umani in Corea del Nord, diffuso giovedì dal ministero per l’Unificazione della Corea del Sud: è la prima volta che il governo sudcoreano conferma che una persona è stata uccisa per motivi simili in Corea del Nord, ma non sarebbe il primo caso simile.

Il rapporto si basa sulle testimonianze di 649 persone scappate dalla Corea del Nord e la notizia della condanna a morte su quanto raccontato in forma anonima da una di queste. Il ragazzo era originario della provincia dello Hwanghae Meridionale, nel sud-ovest della Corea del Nord, ed è stato ucciso pubblicamente nel 2022 per aver ascoltato 70 canzoni sudcoreane e visto tre film, che poi avrebbe passato ad altre sette persone.

Questo viola una legge approvata nel 2020 che proibisce qualunque forma di diffusione di «ideologia e cultura reazionaria» originaria di «paesi ostili»: riguarda in particolare la cultura sudcoreana, che la Corea del Nord ritiene una grave minaccia per la propria società, si rivolge soprattutto alle persone giovani e in caso di violazioni prevede appunto la pena di morte. Tra le altre cose la legge vieta alle donne di indossare abiti da sposa bianchi, di bere vino dai calici o di indossare occhiali da sole, tutte abitudini diffuse sia in Occidente che in Corea del Sud. Nel 2022 inoltre il regime di Kim Jong Un ha introdotto ulteriori misure che vietano alle persone nordcoreane di indossare indumenti come i jeans e maglie con marchi stranieri, così come di portare capelli tinti o troppo lunghi.

Quello diffuso giovedì è il secondo rapporto che riguarda gli abusi e le violazioni dei diritti delle persone in Corea del Nord dopo quello del 2023, ed evidenzia altri casi di esecuzioni pubbliche per chi aveva violato la legge. In base a un rapporto pubblicato nel dicembre del 2021 dal Transitional Justice Working Group, un’organizzazione per i diritti umani di Seul, le persone uccise pubblicamente per aver guardato o diffuso media sudcoreani, tra cui video k-pop, erano almeno sette. Il rapporto diceva che da quando Kim Jong Un governava il paese c’erano state almeno 23 uccisioni pubbliche: due per impiccagione e le altre con armi da fuoco.
