"Sarge?"
"Yes, Corporal Ping?"
"Why're some of you wearing purple flowers, Sarge?"
There was a subtle change in the atmosphere, a suction of sound caused by many pairs of ears listening intently. All the officers in the room had stopped writing.
"I mean, I saw you and Reg and Nobby wearing 'em this time last year, and I wondered if we were all supposed to..." Ping faltered. Sergeant Colon's normally amiable eyes had narrowed and the message they were sending was: you're on thin ice, lad, and it's starting to creak...
"I mean, my landlady's got a garden and I could easily go and cut a--" Ping went on in an uncharacteristic attempt at suicide.
"You'd wear the lilac today would you?" said Colon quietly.
"I just meant that if you wanted me to I could go and--"
"Were you there?" said Colon, getting to his feet so fast that his chair fell over.
"Steady, Fred," murmured Nobby.
"I didn't mean..." Ping began. "I mean...was I where, Sarge?"
Colon leaned on the desk, bringing his round red face an inch away from Ping's nose.
"If you don't know where there was, you weren't there," he said in the same quiet voice.

I really miss Twinkle today. Most of yall probably don't remember him, I lost him in 2020
Tumblr media
He was just so big and cuddly, he was bright white and so clean all the time. He was really sweet with little hens and young cockerels. I used to think he choked or something but since both his sons also had issues I think it was just something related to his own genetics and stuff. Silkies are just really fragile due to their vaulted skull as well and I had an aggressive large fowl hen at the time so I think that might have contributed. I don't think it was his breeders fault and he offered to replace him for free but who could replace my Twinkle?

GLAAD asked me to write for TDOR so I specifically focused on why & how cisgender allies should be doing this work. The trans community has made it clear that honoring the dead is important for many reasons. So to is supporting the living and so many more tasks. Don't turn away. I hope you will read the current memorials (38 as of this weekend) and determine how you can get involved.
You can honor the dead by protecting the living.
Yes, start with reading memorials of trans people, sharing their stories, and doing all we can to protect our trans and gender nonconforming neighbors: calling out anti-trans and racist rhetoric when we hear it, lobbying against legislation that targets trans people, protecting trans youth, and encouraging our own friends and communities to do the same.
But we must go further. We must invest in the trans community with our dollars and our time. We must craft intersectional policies that address the fullness of trans experiences.
We must resist the onslaught of anti-trans violence every day, not just this one day. We must listen to trans voices. And trust trans people.
Today, we remember. Tomorrow, what will you actually do?

Richard Chizmar (Gwendy's Button Box, Chasing the Boogeyman) will publish Memorials in hardcover and e-book on October 22 via Gallery Books.
Set in 1983, the 448-page horror novel involves a group of students who encounter a supernatural terror while on a road trip through Appalachia. Read on for the full synopsis.
1983: Three students from a small college embark on a week-long road trip to film a documentary on roadside memorials for their American Studies class. The project starts out as a fun adventure with long stretches of empty road and nightly campfires where they begin to open up with one another. But as they venture deeper into the Appalachian backwoods, the atmosphere begins to darken. They notice more and more of the memorials feature a strange, unsettling symbol hinting at a sinister secret. Paranoia sets in when it appears they are being followed. Their vehicle is tampered with overnight and some of the locals appear to be anything but welcoming. Before long, the students can’t help but wonder if these roadside deaths were really random accidents…or is something terrifying at work here?
Pre-order Memorials by Richard Chizmar.

Kraków Kościół Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny czyli Bazylika Mariacka foto z 18 grudnia 2019 i 15 lipca 2020
Wysokie na ponad cztery metry epitafium z czarnego marmuru dębnickiego, projektu Franciszka Placidiego, poświęcone dwudziestemu czwartemu archiprezbiterowi parafii mariackiej. Jacek Augustyn Łopacki herbu Kotwica (1690-1761) był doktorem filozofii i medycyny oraz fundatorem licznych przedsięwzięć charytatywnych i artystycznych. W młodości osobisty medyk kardynała Conti zanim ten został papieżem Innocentym XIII, potem w Krakowie leczył na równi magnatów i robotników.

A udawacze! Gdybyście byli prawdziwie opętani, nic by wam nie dało to moje kropienie, bom zwykłej, a nie święconej wody na was użył!
fragmenty dyplomu doktora medycyny Jacka Łopackiego wydanego przez Uniwersytet w Padwie w 1711 r.

Kraków, Poland Saint Mary's Basilica taken on 18 December 2019 and 15 July 2020
Over four meters (14 ft) tall epitaph made of black marble, designed by Francesco Placidi, marking the grave of Jacek Augustyn Łopacki (1690-1761) of the Kotwica coat of arms, the 24th Arch-Priest of the St. Mary's parish, and also Doctor of Medicine and Philosophy, a philanthropist and art patron. In his younger years he was the personal physician of Cardinal Michelangelo dei Conti before the latter became Pope Innocent XIII; later in Kraków he kept treating magnates as well as laborers. He was buried on this site in accordance with his own wish.
I want and consistently make a disposition for that my body, with no delay [and] just in crastino of death, shall have buried in the cemetery next to St. Mary's Church in Kraków, in the ground behind the Crucifixi altar next to the church's wall. excerpt from J.A. Łopacki's last will
Why should I complain that though the harvest time has barely started, frumentum Electorum lamented Prelate already is ground by tombstone into dust, that a Hyacinth flower, so adorned with the color of various Holy virtues [that is] quite beautiful lily-rose innocent modesty, already wilted before our eyes, flos decidit & decor. excerpt from the speech of Jan Kanty Laskiewicz at Łopacki's funeral

[watercolor by Stanisław Janowski, before 1942]
Zdzisław Gajda, historian of medicine, recounts an anecdote about Łopacki: …parish festivals at St Mary's used to be an occasion for a peculiar spectacle: crowds of possessed came arousing pity with the sight of their suffering, which resulted in loosening the purse strings. After the main celebration the Arch-Priest used to come out wearing the pontifical vestments to the square in front of the church and before him gathered a huddle of those tormented by evil spirits … Łopacki, as good doctors are, was no fool and had good observation skills, hence while not denying the tradition, he had his suspicions. And some day he had enough. He came out as usual, said the prayers, took the aspergillum, sprinkled the possessed, and as soon as everybody saw the expected result, he exclaimed: Ah, you frauds! Scallywags and impostors! If you were truly possessed, my sprinkling would help you nothing, as I have used ordinary, not holy water on you!

Edinburgh Castle.
Scottish National War Museum.
Having visited the castle too many times to remember I thought I'd grab some pics that are a wee bit different from the norm, possibly things you never paid much attention to, here's the first few.
The National War Museum is adorned with many features by various sculptors. It's not easy getting all the info on them all, but I will give a run down on them with what I think are the correct details .
First up are the easy ones, the shields of all the Forces are represented around the building, first up are the Royal Medical Corps and The Royal Air Force, the latter is by Pilkington Jackson, I would guess the first is also by him. in my opinion Jackson's most famous work is the Statue of Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn.
The statues are figures representing Virtues, Justice and Courage by Musselburgh born Alexander Carrick. If you have visited the castle, whether just the esplanade and the drop bridge with the gates, well Carrick made the statue on the right, it's a guy called Sir William Wallace.
