Lady In Red
Chapter 4. Puzzle pieces
Read on AO3
[1] [2] [3]
2,747 words
"Earth to Adrien. Hello! Are you alright, kid?"
"Mmm?" Adrien asked absentmindedly, still tapping his chin with his fingers.
"Oh Lord, you both are so silly, you and your ladylove," Plagg sighed in frustration. "Gross! I can't bear all the lovey-dovey stuff and the heart eyes! I need my Camembert!"
While Plagg was munching a slice of Camembert, Adrien returned to his thoughts.
Could it be that Marinette was the love of his life? he asked himself.
He was the kind of guy who always listened to his heart. And now it was telling him he was right. So many things started making sense, clicking together like puzzle pieces.
He thought back to the day not so long ago, when the new ad was filmed at the pool. Marinette was there, and Adrien got so confused about the way he felt that he bumped his head against the car because he couldn't take his eyes off her.
And that day at Musée Grevin, when Marinette tried to kiss him while thinking he was a statue? This almost kiss affected him like an exploding bomb. The way he was freaking out afterwards was only comparable to the day his heart started beating for Ladybug—a real coup de foudre, that is.
That day at the ice rink—if he was being perfectly honest, he wasn't quite sure that what he felt back then upon seeing Marinette in Luka’s arms wasn't jealousy.
The way his heart was melting in his chest whenever he and Marinette slow danced together.
The warmth that filled his entire being when they cuddled together in the Startrain (he felt the same warmth filling him again at the very thought of Marinette pressing her head to his chest like a sleeping kitten).
The way he completely forgot how to breathe, and this is all due to seeing Marinette with her hair down.
And last but not least, the way he felt when Marinette confessed her love to Chat Noir out of nowhere. And although he rejected her, he still felt things.
No, this reverie will lead him nowhere.
Adrien had to make an effort to shake off the daydreams and think more clearly.
What if his heart was wrong? After all, he did not have enough proof. That's what his brain kept telling him.
Adrien rubbed his temples to get his thoughts in order. Then he captured a paper sheet and started scribbling down hastily:
"1. Ladybug wasn't there when Marinette had a birthday date with Evillustrator.
2. Marinette wasn't available when Ladybug attended the Nadja Chamack talk show. Alya was babysitting Manon for her, as she mentioned in her video call.
3. Marinette hid her mask during the filming of the music video for Clara Nightingale, just like I did, in order to avoid being recognised as a superhero.
4. The way Ladybug always seemed to despise Chloé.
5. Ladybug happened to be in New York at the same time as our class did.
6. The way how quickly my letter was delivered to Ladybug. It makes a lot of sense if Alya really is a confidant of Ladybug’s identity.
7. Both girls recently broke up with their boyfriends and are avoiding them now."
"What are you writing so fervently, kid?" Plagg asked suspiciously. "A new sappy poem to your lady in red?"
"Not really", Adrien answered absentmindedly.
He re-read what he had just written and sighed disappointedly.
All of this felt too far-fetched. That proved nothing. He was just clutching at straws.
These were indirect proofs that could be easily debunked by the mere fact that he once saw Ladybug and Marinette side by side.
Yeah, it happened only once, yet it was real.
The day madame Mendeleïev was akumatized and robbed them of their kwamis.
The memorable day he almost figured out Ladybug's identity to be… Marinette.
The day Marinette temporarily wielded almost all the miraculous.
Adrien's throat suddenly went totally dry.
Stop it, Adrien, he internally berated himself.
It might have been just a figment of his imagination. Just a coincidence. Just wishful thinking. Maybe he just really wanted it to be true.
Because if he were to be reasonable and rely on nothing but logic, there was no way Marinette could be Ladybug.
He was now sure that he was the guy Ladybug had been in love with all along.
But Marinette wasn't in love with him! Never has been. She had said so herself multiple times. She liked him as a friend, not as a love interest.
And the more Adrien thought of this, the duller the world around him was getting.
"What is it now, loverboy? Can't tell a good rhyme for "eyes"? You can try "french fries" or whatever."
Plagg's voice again. Adrien must have zoned out for a moment.
Adrien got up and started fumbling around in the desk drawer. It might be his last hope.
There it was—the love letter he got for Valentine's Day, which he believed to be from Ladybug.
And there was also that note from Marinette saying she would see him again tomorrow at school.
Adrien stood up and went to the window, staring into the distance.
It would be fine if he could get a sample of Ladybug’s handwriting.
Because, as nice as it was, the love letter still wasn't enough of a proof. It might've been just wishful thinking that the letter was from Ladybug.
Should he ask her about it when she comes next time?
"Drop it, kid! Just stop!"
Adrien looked up, completely dumbfounded.
Plagg was floating around in the air, holding the paper sheet Adrien had just covered with his thoughts on Ladybug's identity.
"Plagg, what are you do—"
"It's me who should be asking you what you're doing. But I already can see that."
Adrien scowled.
"Give it back to me, you sneaky cat!"
"Here, you can have it." Plagg scoffed, dropping the paper right into Adrien's extended hand. "Look, I see what you're trying to do here, and I don’t like it, like at all."
"Why not?" Adrien asked, staring with wide eyes at his kwami.
"Are you kidding me? Because trying to figure out Ladybug's identity will lead to nothing good, that's why. You know that all too well, boy," Plagg grumbled in a granddad's preachy tone.
"Do you mean I might be on to something, don't you?" Adrien asked mischievously.
"I didn't say that!" Plagg burst out. "Don't try to put words in my mouth!"
The room went quiet as a grave.
"Okay, kid, let's be reasonable," Plagg said a moment later in a much milder voice. "Don't try to investigate who is behind the mask. You know it's a big no-no. Period. And also, make sure to destroy this list by the time your lovebug drops by next time."
"Fine!" Adrien said with a joyless chuckle, crumpling up the paper and slipping it into his pocket, while Plagg occupied himself with another hunk of cheese.
***
"C'mon, spill it, girl! I won't let you go without hearing all the details".
Marinette was sitting at her sewing machine, crafting a new hat.
"I don't have much to say," Marinette said with a shrug.
"But our boy looks like he was born again. You can't tell me that nothing happened between you two!" Alya exclaimed joyfully, and her glasses flashed in the ray of sunshine streaming in through the window.
Marinette reluctantly turned away from the sewing machine.
"Well, we were just sitting on his bed crying and talking about our broken hearts, that's all".
"Is that really all?" Alya asked incredulously, leaning in so close that her nose almost brushed Marinette’s.
"Not really." Marinette answered, turning immediately the colour of the setting sun.
"Oh, really? What else? I'm dying to know." Alya said eagerly.
"We… uhm… kissed," Marinette articulated as her voice dropped gradually to a barely audible whisper.
"On the lips? Is it true?" Alya gasped, her eyes as big as saucers.
Marinette nodded silently.
"I knew it, I knew it!" Alya cried out, her fist shooting triumphantly into the air. "And what’s now? Our lovebirds are together, aren't they?"
"Yes, kind of," Marinette confirmed, rubbing the back of her neck, her voice returning to its normal volume. "He said I could come whenever I wanted. And then we kissed again."
"Oh Lord, how romantic! Rose would be over the moon to hear that!" Alya cooed, but then she remembered something.
"By the way, I have to make an interview with you to keep your cover." She informed. And upon seeing Marinette’s perplexed expression, she quickly explained: "I told Adrien the other day that I got to know about your feelings for him while making an interview with you for the Ladyblog. He might be getting suspicious if the said interview never comes out."
"Then I have to check my schedule. Maybe I can accord you some time later this evening," Marinette responded, and they both laughed.
"Wait, I'm not done with the news yet." Alya went on. "There will be a birthday party taking place on the Liberty this Sunday. It's Juleka's birthday. You're invited too. Don't you dare miss it."
"A birthday party? That's cool! I'm all in!" Marinette exclaimed ecstatically, turning back to the sewing machine.
She had hardly made two stitches when she started realising something.
"Wait a minute, Alya Césaire! What did you just say? The Liberty? Weren't we supposed to go to the movies?"
"We were, but the plans have changed. We all agreed that throwing a party on the pirate ship would be much cooler." Alya shrugged nonchalantly.
Marinette narrowed her eyes.
"I can smell a trap."
"What trap? What are you talking about?" Alya said, batting her eyes innocently.
"You know perfectly well what I'm talking about! Luka will be there, too, since it's his birthday as well."
"Uhm… Yes, and what of it?" Alya said, still feigning ignorance.
"I know what you are trying to do. You want to trick me into talking to him since I started avoiding him."
"Gotcha!" Alya exclaimed, snapping her fingers. "You basically admitted that you are avoiding Luka."
"What?.. No, I'm not! It's not that!" A totally red Marinette covered her face with her palms so that only flaming red ear tips could be seen. "Alya, you can’t do that to me," Marinette begged miserably from behind her palms. "I can't do this. It will be super awkward."
"But how do you call what you are doing now?" Alya retorted, slamming her fists to her hips. "It's ridiculous, utterly ridiculous! You cause everyone around you unnecessary trouble. Even Adrien noticed you were avoiding Luka. It needs to stop!"
At the mention of Adrien Marinette surrendered.
"Okay, you won. I'll be there. But I can't promise that I'll talk to Luka."
"That's my girl!" Alya said way more softly than just a minute ago. "I knew that common sense would triumph. There's no need to overcomplicate your life, Marinette. It's overly complicated as it is." She patted Marinette’s back reassuringly.
***
Marinette was turning over in her mind the encounters Ladybug had with Adrien in the past.
She gets distracted by his marvellous green eyes looking at her from the limo window, his mouth agape in awe.
He blushes slightly as they awkwardly greet each other at the TV studio.
He rushes to her rescue when Riposte is about to stab her.
He can't bring himself to so much as touch her shoulder, retracting his hand halfway.
He pulls his hand away as soon as he realises that his hand is on her shoulders.
He latches desperately onto her after his akumatized bodyguard throws him off the skyscraper, the look in his eyes telling her more than any words ever could.
Love, respect, and admiration for her came through in all his doings.
So then, he'd been in love with her all along.
And that tender love poem he wrote for Valentine's Day was for her.
Marinette wondered how he was going to get the love letter delivered to her. Would he have asked Alya to do it for him? Or would he have been standing outside all day long, waiting for her to pass by?
She couldn't fight back a giggle at the thought.
Maybe the reason he ended up throwing the letter in the trash can was exactly that he didn't come up with a plan to deliver it.
But the girl it was addressed to got it nonetheless and loved it so, so much.
She rummaged through her things in a desk drawer until she found what she'd been looking for—a crumpled paper sheet covered with Adrien's neat handwriting.
She knew the content of the paper sheet by heart.
Marinette let out a lovesick sigh.
She longed to see Adrien. She couldn't resist the urge to melt into his embrace and hear his comforting words. She had to see him right now.
She got up abruptly.
"Tikki, transforme-moi."
***
It was a matter of a few minutes to reach his house and find him standing at the window of his room, as if he were waiting for her.
"Adrien!"
***
As soon as they pulled apart after a particularly long kiss, Adrien suddenly said, scratching the back of his neck:
"May I ask you something, Ladybug?"
After having gotten a nod of approval, Adrien pulled out a pink-coloured piece of paper from his pocket.
"Was that you who wrote this?"
Ladybug turned bright red so quickly, as if someone had pushed a button inside of her.
She recognised the heart-shaped Valentine's Day card immediately. The silly, sappy love poem she sent him a while ago but forgot to sign.
No matter how embarrassed she was about having written it, there was no use denying the truth.
"Yes, I… Yes, it was me," she mumbled, lowering her gaze to examine the black spots on her hands. "Did you… did you like it?" She dared a question after what seemed like an eternity, cringing at the sound of her own voice, which suddenly became too thick for her liking.
"Yes, I liked it a lot." Adrien's voice was as soft as marshmallows. "It wasn’t signed, so I always hoped it was from you. I'm so glad I guessed it right."
Ladybug didn't expect this. She looked up to see such a loving look in his eyes and such a heartfelt smile on his lips that she could barely resist the urge to kiss him senseless.
Adrien reached out his hand and touched her cheek, giving her goosebumps. Then he leaned in and placed a kiss on her forehead.
"Ladybug," he said. "This is the best letter I've ever gotten in my life."
Ladybug felt a rush of warmth flood her chest.
How could someone be so kind and gentle? He kept the postcard so dearly, as if it were the most precious thing in the world, just because he thought it was from her. He really loved her so much!
He was perfect! She found herself falling in love with him more and more.
Ladybug cuddled closer to him, and he hugged her tenderly in response.
"I love you so much, Adrien," she murmured into his chest. "You're so kind and so generous."
Adrien said nothing, pulling her closer to him.
"Did you know that your cousin Félix once tried to kiss me against my will?" She continued after having relished his closeness for a while.
Adrien stiffened.
"He did what?"
"I immediately knew it couldn’t have been you because I know you'd never do something like that." She continued in between kisses to his cheek.
Ladybug could feel Adrien's hands on her back balling into fists. He murmured something suspiciously similar to "I'll kill him".
"Don't you worry," she said, placing a soothing hand on his arm. "He got what he deserved—a good punch in the face."
Adrien chuckled a dry, short chuckle.
"You should have told me ages ago." He said, looking her straight in the eyes.
Ladybug smiled fondly at him.
"What would it be good for? I managed to handle it on my own. At least now I know that I won't ever mistake him for you again."
She was silenced with an ardent kiss from Adrien.
Her mind immediately went completely blank, and right now she wouldn't want it any other way. Shadow Moth and Félix be damned. As long as she had Adrien by her side (and Alya and Chat Noir, of course), she was sure she could make it.

Taking Flight - Chapter 5 - The Grater

“Mme Mendeleïev, show yourself! I need that A!” The Akuma roared out.
Marinette wanted the slam her head into the desk. Everyone began opening the windows and jumping out, as they were currently on the ground floor. Some were panicking and others were complaining.
Mme Mendeleïev looked down at the papers she had been grading and glanced at her computer screen in a panic trying to figure out to who she had just given a bad grade. It was only two, but the student could have gotten a B and gotten mad for all she knew. Mme Mendeleïev couldn’t help but slouch in her chair, trying to determine whether she should run or let the Akuma get her so she could get revived by Ladybug. Put in effort or allow for Ladybug to just take care of it?
Marinette left the classroom’s door and ran to the bathroom, Chat Noir was already taunting the Akuma so that was a relief. Marinette checked that no one was in the bathroom with her before she called Tikki.
“I have a feeling this one won’t be as bad,” the Kwami squeaked.
“As long as blood isn’t spilled I think it’ll be fine,” Marinette responded. “Spots on.”
Ladybug opened the window and jumped out, she threw the yo-yo and it caught a part of the roof. She pulled at just the right moment with a practiced motion, she flew over the side of the school into the roof over looking the courtyard.
“You know it’s not nice to stomp on people, have you tried talking your problems out? I hear it does wonders!” Chat Noir said to the Akuma while somersaulting over them.
The Akuma was as tall as Gorialla had been, she resembled a snapping turtle, the way her jaw came out with her large sharp teeth. Her chin was rigid with her rock-like skin. She had long sharp claws, her back had spikes coming out of her, similar to a porcupine. She had a semi-long tail, the end was fairly large. This was probably one of Hawkmoth’s better-looking Akumas.
“I am Grater, and I don’t need to talk my problems out. They need to be fixed now!” Grater yelled at Chat Noir.
Her arms and legs were adorned with multiple bracelets, one of them had to be holding the Akuma. Ladybug sighed, Hawkmoth-even with simple Akumas-had to make it harder. She had an idea but before she got too far, “Lucky Charm!”
A heavy thing of fabric fell down into her arms. Yards worth of fabric, the width was extremely long, and the length amazed her. Ladybug looked between Grater and the Lucky Charm, she knew exactly what to do with it.
Chat Noir landed next to her, “Shall we make her a skirt M’lady? I think she would look nice in a tutu.” Chat Noir grinned at her, he was tired. That was evident enough to Ladybug, her partner was tried but not from the Akuma from something else. Ladybug shook her head, that wasn’t important right now, “I was thinking more of a sleep mask Chaton.”
“What do you need?” Chat Noir said, before jumping out of the way of Grater’s claws coming down on the school.
“Meet on the other side.” She shouted back at him. The right side of the school now had the second floor collapsed in the middle. Grater turned around and growled.
Ladybug and Chat Noir met in the middle of the left side.
“What now,” Chat smiled at Ladybug.
“Help me unroll this a bit.” They immediately got to it as she continued, “When she gets over here I’ll run up her arm, and you use your baton to extend yourself to her head. Wrap the fabric around her head while I break the bracelets till I find the Akuma.” Ladybug looked up as Grater reached them, “She won’t be able to get the fabric off without cutting herself.”
Ladybug turned back to Chat and he nodded as Grater brought her arm up to smash them. Ladybug jumped up-with enhanced strength-above her incoming hand. She landed on her forearm as Chat Noir propelled himself up to her shoulders. Ladybug ran up the arm and grabbed one of the spikes on her shoulder to propel herself up, she tugged the end of the fabric onto a herd of spikes on the back of her head. The fabric was snug enough that she ran back down the right arm she had run up, she started snapping bracelets with the magic wire of her yo-yo.
“Get this stupid thing off of MEEE!” Grater roared as Chat Noir swing himself around her head.
“Do you have some manners with that request,” Chat yelled back. He almost slipped but he hooked his arm around one of the smaller spikes at the top of the shell-like back. “M’lady you wouldn’t happen to be close to finding our pretty little pupa?”
Ladybug had snapped all the ones on the right arm but none of them held the Akuma. Ladybug was snapping bracelets on the left arm now, she scanned all the bracelets trying to see if any of them stood out in a way. But nothing really did.
Grater suddenly spun knocking both the heroes off her. Grater’s tail swept the lower floors making most of the school collapse from the damage. Chat Noir couldn’t catch himself and his baton was out of reach. He fell to the ground, he lifted himself up groaning. Ladybug had fallen next to some debris, a giant stone plate had soon fallen and was on her legs and upper body. That wouldn’t be a problem if it had only been her legs.
“Chat!”
She attempted to push the large piece off herself. It was no use and she couldn’t see where Chat had landed. And the dust from the debris made it hard to see and breathe. She groan to herself, she raised her fists and brought them down like a child throwing a tantrum. It broke some bits off and a few cracks formed, but it didn’t give the results she wanted.
Chat lifted himself up, his ears had a mild ring. Plagg must have been more tired than he thought. He looked for his baton seeing it was a few feet away. He stumbled over to it, he had gotten up too quickly. Grater had stumbled out of the courtyard roaring.
“Great,” Chat murmured to himself. He looked around for his partner, he lit up when he saw red and blue. His eyes widened when he saw her predicament, she was trapped under a giant slab, he could see her pounding on a giant slab of stone. They didn’t have long, Ladybug had used her Lucky Charm, so it was only a matter of time before she transformed.
Chat ran across the courtyard to Ladybug, “Cataclysm!” The piece of rumble became ash and Ladybug looked up to her partner smiling, “Chat!”
“Go refuel Tikki before you detranform, I’ll try damage control,” Chat said as he helped Ladybug up.
Ladybug nodded in thank you and zipped away. She landed in an alley just in time for the transformation to drop. Marinette grabbed a macaron out of her bag and handed it to Tikki who was sitting on the garbage disposal. Marinette used the garbage disposal to try and hide for the most part.
“Are you okay Tikki?”
Tikki nodded and gulped down the bit she was on, “Yeah, just something’s off. I'm sorry I couldn't give you the full strength you usually have.”
“It’s okay, we’ll deal with that later. For now, we’ll do what we’ve always done, use what we’re dealt.” Marinette said as Tikki finished the treat. Marinette called on the transformation.
Ladybug zipped overhead, Grater hadn’t gotten too far. Chat was keeping her busy with an annoying-to Grater-game of Marco Polo. While Ladybug had been gone Grater’s claws had shortened and she was trying to get the fabric off but found that Chat was far more the annoyance than some fabric.
Luckily for them, the fabric had caught stuck between two of her back spikes. Ladybug zipped past Chat with a wave, she pointed at the bundle of fabric and spun her finger. Chat Noir gave a salute and launched himself up to the fabric.
Ladybug had taken the moment to really look at Grater, all the bracelets were bright and eye-catching. All except one at the bottom of the right left.
“That must be where the Akuma is,” the bug heroine said to no one in particular.
She swung down to the leg, she hooked her arm around one of the higher bracelets. She hooked the yo-yo around the Akuma holding bracelet and snapped it. Grater yelled no as she felt the bubbles form up her body.
“Time to de-evilize!” Ladybug shouted as she dropped to the ground. She captured the Akuma to purify it.
Grater’s no was cut off as she returned to her regular self, the girl immediately started screaming as she started to fall. Chat Noir dived in her direction, she grabbed her by the abdomen before activating his baton. They came down slowly.
Chat Noir set the girl down as Ladybug picked up the torn-up fabric. She tossed it up in the air so the Miracle Cure could rebuild the destruction and restore life or health to those who got caught in the destruction. A crowd formed as Ladybug and Chat Noir did their signature, “Pound it!”
Thanks and questions were shouted at the hero duo.
Alya came up with her Live, “And once again Ladybug and Chat Noir save the day without fail! Ending this Live here folks!” She immediately started recording after she ended the Live and calling to her favorite heroes to see if she could get an interview.
“Al-ee-ya,” Chat Noir called, putting an emphasis on each syllable. The group opened enough for Alya to get through, some reporters glared at the teen as she made her way to the duo. “Hey, many have been asking and speculating if you will be bringing any heroes out, new or old?”
Ladybug’s smile became a bit strand, but Chat put and hand on her shoulder, “We have yet to decide. We can not do it as we used to, it is probably the most dangerous ever. But when we decide to share them again you’ll see.” Chat gave a wink at the end to the camera with his usual sly charm.
Ladybug stood a little taller, it was barely noticeable but she felt a little lighter. She looked at the blogger and the camera, “Exactly. We will not be speaking anymore on the topic as of this time.”
Chat’s ring beeped twice, “Ah well that’s my cue. See ya later.” Chat Noir gave his signature salute and went away, back toward the school but no one actually noticed.
Ladybug heard a sniffle behind her, she turned around to see the girl trying to keep herself together but failing. Ladybug turned to the people telling them she was done for the time being and to please leave. Some reporters groaned, some grumbled, and some sighed as they dispersed. Fans frowned as it had been so long since they had seen the heroine so close.
Ladybug walked toward the poor girl, she was just younger than her. She recognized her but couldn’t really remember who exactly she was.
“I’m so sorry, how are you?” Ladybug asked gently. The girl wiped her nose on her sleeve not really caring how the beetle-themed hero saw her, even if she was embarrassed.
“I’m so-so sorry, I didn’t mean to get akumatized. I’ve been trying to keep it together but I-I’m just not used to bottling up my emotions,” she admitted to the hero avoiding eye contact. Her voice was thick with emotion, her American accent was a little sluggish in her French.
“What’s your name dear?” Ladybug asked in English, she moved her head so they were making eye contact. The girl was a bit skittish, but she couldn’t blame her.
“I’m Jody Gunshiken, but I go by-by Jojo.” Jojo cleared her throat. She didn’t really know how to act in front of this person, it wasn’t like you always get to talk to a hero. The name jogged a memory for Ladybug, Jojo was an exchange student from America in Marc’s class. She wanted to be a singer, she wrote songs and seemed to have an interest in painting from the few times she had passed by their class as Marinette.
“Well, Jojo how about I bring you back to the school? I can only imagine it is hard coming to a new place and not being able to be yourself.” Ladybug said grabbing her yo-yo and putting a hand out in question.
“Yes please! I don’t know exactly where I am, I haven’t explored in this area.” Jojo became sheepish when admitting that piece of information.
“It’s okay, I remember when I started swinging through Paris, I had to completely relearn to the layout of the city.” Ladybug said grabbing Jojo, “This comfortable?”
“Yeah, it’s okay,” Jojo responded with a laugh.
“Okay, then hold on tight,” Ladybug said before bringing them up. Jojo’s screams of excitement could be heard from the school.

Marinette entered the Bakery with sore legs. While the magic mostly protected her and enhanced what her body could do that didn’t mean she didn’t still hurt as a civilian. Her abdomen hurt more than the rest of her body, she wanted to just crash in her bed for a few hours but sadly it wasn’t Friday, and she still had homework to complete.
“Hey sweetheart, how was school?” Tom asked. It was his turn to handle the front, seems like the new girl wasn’t starting work today.
“Fine, but there was an Akuma so that interrupted class,” Marinette smiled at her father.
“Yeah, her tail almost hit the Bakery-Thank you come again!” Tom waved to the customer.
“Well I’m glad you didn’t get hit, I’m gonna go up and work on my school work.” Marinette said as she passed her father.
“Wait!” Tom cried causing Marinette to jump. She turned back to her father with a questioning face. “You got out of the school before it collapsed, right?”
“Of course I did Papa. I’m okay, you don’t need to worry,” Marinette had a soft small smile on her face. Tom relaxed and nodded, “Okay, that’s good, I just wanted to make sure.”
Marinette headed up to their apartment so she could go to her room and get some work done before dinner. She would message Chat about needing to get some rest tonight. Marinette would usually push through it but with everything she needed to give herself one night. Also, something inside her said that it would be okay. That she could miss one night, maybe it was her being a Guardian and it making her connected to the Universe and its’ sense of balance.
When she had just been Ladybug it made her connected to those things as she had possession of the Ladybug Miraculous, but as she was Guardian now that connection felt stronger. Like a pull in her chest trying to tell her when not to do something or if something could be done or not. It was strange but felt right in a sense, she-
“Āyí Bridget?” Marinette’s eyes widened as she saw her aunt sitting in her living room talking to her mom excitedly. Bridget turned to Marinette, “What? You don’t sound excited to see me. Did you stop liking me after your birthday?” Bridget made an exaggerated frowning pouty face at her niece.
“No, no that’s not it. I just, I just didn’t expect to see you here.” Marinette said nervously.
“I’m just teasing,” Bridget said squishing her face up at the girl. Marinette replied with “I know”s as Bridget hugged her. Marinette felt a little squished if she was being honest. She looked over to her mother to see her hiding a smile behind her hand.
A little warning would have been nice, Marinette thought to herself. As much as she loved her aunt now was probably the worst time for one of her surprise pop ins. Gina might have been a better option, because while Gina just took her out to have crazy mini adventures in Paris. Bridget could get a little invasive, like yes she meaned well but Marinette needed space, and with Bridget here that could potentially get a little hard.
“How long do you plan on being here this visit?” Marinette asked innocently as possible.
“Oh about four months. I’ll be leaving at the begining of January,” Bridget replied casually, as if it wasn’t so important. But it was, this was the longest stay Bridget ever had. Marinette had never had Bridget here for months.
“Months,” Marinette repeated. Bridget nodded her head eagerly, “I know it’s a surprise but I’m here on business, we’re growing internationally. We already have places set up but we having giving them attention the last few years, so I volunteered to oversee the setup here!”
“That’s so cool,” Marinette replied. Marinette’s insides were melting and not in the “Oh Kwami it’s Adrien” way more in the “Oh Kwami I have another family member to watch over” way. But it’s four months, four months it’s that long. Bridget will be out of here before she knew it.
“I know right! And I can hang out with more! Also, you need to introduce me to all your friends, I hear you’ve spread your wings a bit.” Bridget said almost shaking Marinette while she clung to her. Bridget stepped back and wiped a fake tear away, “My baby has grown up so much.”
“That my baby Baihu,” Sabine said sternly, but her eyes showed a different story.
“Tomato, Patato.” Bridget said back, Marinette giggled at her aunt.
“Those aren’t even close to being the same thing!” Sabine cried.
“Much like my unofficial parental guidance I play in Marinette’s life.” The two continued to banter back and forth. Marinette smiled, she loved it when Bridget came over because her mother seemed to let a mask down. Where that mask came from she didn’t know, nor did she feel she needed to.
Marinette excuse herself to her room to get some work done. That being some actual school work done and setting some new rules for Kwami during these four months.

Hey! I absolutely adored looking at your art and reading about your posts on French culture c: Hopefully this hasn't been asked before, but I noticed that you mentioned many of the characters' names are puns. The only pun names I knew about before this was Marinette and Aurore. Is it literally the entire cast who has pun names or just the main characters, and what do their names mean? Thank you so much for all your insightful posts!
Hi there! :)
First of all, thank you so much for your sweet comment!!!! Especially regarding my art because I’m still learning so I’m very happy to know it is appreciated ♥ I’m also experiencing a huge art block this month, it’s getting better so I should post something soon but it hasn’t been easy! :)
& I’m glad you liked the posts about French culture, I’m always happy to share! You’re the first to ask me about the puns in the names so I’ll recap the ones I know of or have guessed; I’m sure I’m missing out some so if some of you know about it, please do share! (I’ll still share Marinette’s one in case some people don’t know about it here)
Puns or hidden meanings in the ML characters’ names:
⇒ Marinette Dupain-Cheng: ‘Marinette’ is a terribly ugly old Grandma’s name means (amongst other things) ‘the one who raises’, Dupain stands for ‘du pain’ meaning ‘some bread’ and the name ‘Cheng’ apparently (to check because I’m not Chinese) means in Chinese ‘success, achievement’. So ‘Marinette Dupain-Cheng’ would be ‘the one who raises bread successfully’ sort of.
⇒ Adrien/Gabriel Agreste: ‘Agreste’ is a butterfly species in French (Hipparchia semele) and its English name is ‘grayling’.
⇒ Nino Lahiffe: I’ve seen Thomas Astruc on Twitter one day stating that Nino’s name was a reference to a French TV channel called ‘Nolife’ about geek & Japanese culture. So the end of his name kinda sounds like ‘no life’.
⇒ Alya Césaire: For this one I had to check on Google because I’m not that cultivated (haha) but I’d say the last name is a reference to ‘Aimé Césaire’, a Martinican writer & politic who created the “Négritude” literary movement that gathered Francophone black people (thank you Wikipedia please students for your essays use a better source of information but this will do for what I’m doing here)
⇒ Chloé/Audrey/André Bourgeois: ‘Bourgeois’ means the same in English and used to refer in the past to middle-class people. However, nowadays, it mainly refers to ‘boho’ or ‘rich people’ if that makes sense.
⇒ Sabrina Raincomprix: It sounds kind of like ‘n’a rien compris’ meaning ‘hasn’t understood anything’. Oops poor girl.
⇒ Roger Raincomprix: In the same vein as his daughter’s name, it sounds kind of like ‘roooh j’ai rien compris’ meaning ‘raaah I haven’t understood anything’.
⇒ Marc Anciel: Take away the ‘M’ and you obtain something that sounds exactly like “arc-en-ciel” meaning ‘rainbow’ 🌈😊
⇒ Rose Lavillant: I don’t know about her last name or I haven’t figured it out yet, but ‘rose’ means ‘pink’ (as well as ‘rose’) and it’s kinda her colour, isn’t it?
⇒ Lila Rossi: I’m pretty sure there must be a signification for her last name that I don’t know about yet, but about her first name: so apart from being the name of a flower, it can be considered an English pun because it sounds like ‘lie-la’, but in French there’s nothing regarding lying puns. However, ‘lila’ just so happens to be the name of a colour shade of… Purple! And which Miraculous’ holder is purple associated to? I wonder…
⇒ Juleka/Luka/Anarka Couffaine: This one I figured it out not so long ago but ‘-a Couffaine’ sounds like ‘acouphène’ meaning ‘tinnitus/ringing in the ear’. Some of these can be provoked by listening to too loud music. Otherwise, I’m not sure about that one, but the end of their name also sounds a wee bit like ‘cacophonie’ meaning ‘cacophony’ so lots of noise.
⇒ Mme Mendeleïev: Direct reference to the periodic table, which conception is attributed to the chemist Mendeleïev.
⇒ Mr Damoclès: Only thing I can find here is a reference to the ‘sword of Damocles’ (& I’ll invite you to read the greek legend about it because too long to explain) but there’s a French expression (that maybe exists in English or there languages, I wouldn’t be surprised) saying that ‘having a sword of Damocles hanging above the head’ means that you’re in constant danger. I’d say it’s linked to his role as the headmaster watching out for every students’ move.
⇒ Penny Rolling / Jagged Stone: I’m pretty sure this must be a reference to the Rolling Stones.
⇒ Clara Rossignol: A ‘rossignol’ or ‘nightingale’ in English is a bird famous for his beautiful singing.
⇒ Mr Xavier Ramier (aka Mr Pigeon): The ‘pigeon ramier’ is a species of pigeons (Columba palumbus), which is ‘common wood pigeon’ in English.
⇒ Clara Contard: It’s one of Nadja Chamack’s journalist if you forgot (in Dark Owl notably) and it the end sounds like ‘racontar’ meaning ‘gossip’.
⇒ Ondine: An ‘ondine’, or ‘undine’ in English, is a river nymph or beings associated with water. When we say from someone that they’re an ‘ondine’, it means they are at ease in water.
⇒ Aurore Boréale: An ‘aurore boréal’ is an aurora borealis or northern lights. ‘Aurore’ is actually a real French name.
_________________________
Aaand I think that’s about all of the puns or meanings I know of in the show. I’m pretty sure there’s more, especially regarding the classmates’ names, but I haven’t figured them out yet! Kagami might have some Japanese pun or meaning but I don’t know enough about it to know it. If I realize I forgot some, I’ll reblog this post & add the new ones.
If some of you know more, please do share I would love to know it!
Have a sunny day anon! ♥

I was thinking, for my weird Miraculous fic that's probably a one-shot -- maybe I should cut off the first part? It was supposed to be about introducing the villain AKA the plot device that would force Marinette and Adrien to react to the whole Lila situation in school, with later chapters/paragraphs focusing more on the dynamic that the town has with akumas, how they react, how their lives change, etc. Bur well, the fight scene was nixe to write, and I love angsty battle scenes where everyone gets splashed with a good old dose of tears, and also battle sequences are so much fun to write, I had no idea but I apparently like the dynamism of a battle, the scenery that keeps changing, the characters that are thrown in an unexpected situation and need to resolve it, etc.
So I'm also thinking to cut off the fight scene because the akuma doesn't make sense. We have this weird eldritch eel thing that floats, then later on I was searching for a power and I liked the combination of like, pale fire and dark blue, a bit like those pictures of like, heat levels in the body -- and also because it was fun to have this creature from the deep sea spout flames like some kind of surface dragon thing. Then with that came the concept of making it into some sort of turtle/mammal thing that kind of looks like an angry turtle with bits of lava rolling on its back -- like, so hot it's almost yellow. The back design ended up looking more like a mountain with tall, slender grass and some dusty soil, like, the pale kind with some darker patches where it's more shadowy/cliffside-esque? And I had this idea that there was sort of a mountain thing on top of its carapace, and there's something in a little taiga thing between the mountains where Marinette needs to get to either fix the akuma, get rid of its weapons, or fix the damage it's causing. I thought of like, a combo between Audimatrix and a more element-themed villain like Weredad: there's the technology part that's like, controlling damage ans sort of scaring everyone down on the ground, while there's the eel thingy doing... Other stuff? Shooing people away? Shooing the technology away? I don't know at this point.
Like, the robot part was kind of a shot in the dark. I had this random idea of making robots appear, then that the robots were connected to the eel thing (that I had to physically force myself to picture as an eel and not a turtle because holy crap mental images are hard), and the lava was like, shot down from the robots. Since there was something shooting flames/lava/some weird acid thing that ended up being a weird liquid fire thing nonsense. So I thought, well, robots, right? Since they're easily something a villain can conjure -- or ar least, something you get to turn civilians into. The idea that you'd turn people into "cold" metal monsters by throwing them into lava felt kind of cool, too, if not completely disgusting to really think about. But it's an Akuma, and magic, so I guess it doesn't hurt. Deal? Deal. So now I just have to connect the pieces, but I'm kind of worried about the fic being weird or something. And I have to figure some kind of gimmick too.
The eel thing (I'm calling it Eldritch because why not, it might even be some sort of a villain name like Eldritch Metal or something) is really strong -- fic starts when it yanks Marinette off her feet while escaping her confused mess of yo-yo string/spaghetti/trap thing under the Eiffel tower. Tower collapses, Marinette hangs on for dear life, and since she'd just cast her Lucky Charm, things kind of suck. So she has to basically just hold on until Chat Noir comes back, and since she's there, she can fight a robot or two like why not, right? The fight is uneccessarily tense because honestly? I wanted to un-downplay how dangerous akumas are like, those kids are badass and akumas cause real danger, you know? And I wanted to show how Marinette reacted when she had to fight an Akuma on her own, like, we never really look into how scary it's gotta be to right these guys without your partner -- especially if you rely on them as much as Marinette does Chat Noir. Basically talk about how she depends on him -- the show stated how important Chat was to her, and honestly, I think it's gotta be something to talk about sooner or later. Ladybug's position is basically like being the bomb technician in a war zone. Like, sure, you have some field knowledge, but seriously? Go try to defuse a bomb when the whole tagteam is shooting at you and also THEY HAVE BOMBS and you're the only technician and you really can't unfuse a bomb without someone making sure you don't get murdered in the face. So I wanted to talk about that! I thought it might be something Marinette really needs to realize, and also people in general, because like, Chat is cool, nobody says he isn't, or should say. So yeah.
But the thing is, I hadnt planned for the fic to be taking that direction. It kind of turned into commentary on their characters/relationship when honestly, I meant to talk about like -- how does the town handle akumas? Can they do better? How can people handle bullying better? Is Chat being bullied/disvalued? Should something be done? How do the people handle akumatization/bullying? Basically, rhe fic started with this premise that yes, sometimes, you really WANT to believe in the people you're supposed to have faith in -- yourself, others, teachers or friends, God, parents, whatever. But sometimes you just stop pretending and you allow yourself to be dissappiinted, and angry, and it sucks. I wanted to delve into that. Into the premise of the show, into how some characters did things that others considered good but sometimes made horrible decisions that didn't get addressed or that were swept under the rug because you just wanted to believe so badly that they were good and you didn't want to stop believing in them.
Like Caline Bustier, I wanted to believe she was super sweet and all, but well, sometimes it's just no, and Mme Mendeleïev is supposed to be rude, there's stuff happening all over the place between Chloé and Sabrina and you just have no idea???? And I felt like maybe it's really freaking stupid to say this, like, isnt it the point of every fanfic ever to expand on canon and say that you're angry about things? But, I dunno. I guess I just kind of wanted to see stuff the way they are.
And I might or might now have talked about the bullying, and Lila, and how Chloé bullied basically everyone in the past and how that affected them, and also like, criminally, what is everyone's crimes? What would you sue them for? That's kind of what I wanted to explore. Kind of take of this blanket of "they're a good person, of course they wouldn't do that", like. I guess, stop taking people for better people than they are just because you want to believe they're a good model or something.
So yeah. I might post the start here? I don't know.
