When Germans emigrated to Brazil 200 years ago
Two centuries ago there was widespread poverty in Germany. An irresistable offer by the Brazilian emperor back then attracted thousands of German emigrants.
Tumblr media
The aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, failed harvests and oppressive tax burdens made life difficult for people in Germany at the beginning of the 19th century.
Then came a tempting offer from the other side of the world — 77 hectares of land for every family willing to settle in Brazil. Plus livestock, seeds and agricultural equipment, as well as financial assistance for the first two years.
It is more than many German farmers, craftsmen and day laborers ever dared to hope for at home. Soon the first of them responded to the call to say goodbye to their old home.

Germany..... WTF?
By Marielena Meder March 26, 2025
A trans-identified male in Giessen, Germany, has been sentenced to 10 months probation after repeatedly exposing his genitals in public, soliciting migrant children for sexual abuse, and spraying them with his urine. During the hearing, the public prosecutor assigned to his case argued that the crimes were simply an attempt by the man to “affirm her femininity,” to which the judge agreed.
While the identity of the 42-year-old perpetrator was withheld by German press due to strict privacy laws, Reduxx can name the man as “Sophie KoKo,” a Kazakhstan native with a long history of sex offenses. KoKo revealed himself to be the subject of the case after angrily taking to the reply sections under articles about his crimes and threatening commenters who misgendered him.
KoKo, who underwent a so-called “gender reassignment surgery” 17 years ago, is said to have repeatedly been caught exposing himself in the Giessen city center, with multiple cases lodged since 2019. He would also touch himself indecently in the genital area – including in front of children. According to police, he has been linked to over 50 sexual incidents, but the most recent trial focused only on seven of the documented cases. In one instance, he demanded oral sex from the children and sprayed them with his urine, which he had collected in a bottle. KoKo has been in pretrial detention since March of 2024.
As early as May of 2021, KoKo was observed at the Giessen marketplace lifting up his skirt and showing his genitals without underwear. Just a few days later, he did it again in the same location. Children were present to witness him making obscene gestures before he fled on his bicycle, evading police checks in the Neustadt area. At the time, investigators unsuccessfully searched for a female, describing KoKo as a “woman” in the appeal for witnesses.

A trans-identified male accused of murdering a security guard at a refugee shelter was placed in pretrial detention for women in the federal state of Brandenburg, where he terrorized female inmates and threatened to kill them. Henrico Hilton G., a refugee from South Africa, was supposed to have been deported before his gruesome act and is now demanding in court to be addressed as a “female” named “Cleopatra.”
On February 20, 2025, the trial of Henrico Hilton G., a 38-year-old transgender-identified man originally from South Africa, commenced at Potsdam Regional Court. Hilton, who arrived in Germany as a refugee, is charged with manslaughter.
Prosecutors allege that Hilton fatally stabbed 33-year-old security guard Anwar A. in May 2024 at an asylum shelter located on Geschwister-Scholl-Straße in Potsdam. Hilton reportedly attacked the guard with deliberate knife thrusts aimed at his chest, piercing the victim’s heart and causing fatal internal bleeding.
According to previous reports by Reduxx, Hilton fled the scene, prompting a widespread search by Brandenburg West police. The area around the asylum facility was sealed off, and tracking dogs searched the nearby Sanssouci Park.
In a bizarre twist, three hours after fleeing the murder scene, Hilton contacted police to report that he had been “misgendered” at an Edeka supermarket in Schöneberg. Unaware of his connection to the murder, local officers recorded Hilton’s complaint without recognizing his connection to the ongoing manhunt, allowing him to remain free after taking his report. Information from this incident eventually led to Hilton’s arrest.
Initially placed in pretrial detention at Luckau-Duben women’s prison, Hilton reportedly terrorized the female inmates, leading to criminal complaints from two women. Witnesses at his trial described his behavior as aggressive and threatening, including frequent harassment and issuing death threats. Following numerous complaints, he was transferred to the men’s prison in Neuruppin-Wulkow in August 2024.
Despite laws at the time requiring inmate separation based on recorded sex, the prison housed Hilton in the women’s facility. This placement violated existing regulations, as Germany’s Self-Determination Act—which simplifies changing legal sex—had not taken effect until November 2024. Hilton’s passport listed him as male.
During his first court appearance, Hilton, wearing a headscarf and makeup, demanded to be addressed as a woman named “Cleopatra,” a request honored by the court. Hilton denied the manslaughter charges through his attorney but has otherwise remained silent.
Testimonies during the trial painted Hilton as aggressive, with a documented history of conflicts, including threats involving knives. Anwar A., the victim, previously prohibited Hilton from carrying a knife in the shelter, citing concerns over safety.
Hilton’s case has intensified scrutiny of Potsdam immigration authorities, as he had been under a deportation order since May 2021 but was never removed from the country despite numerous criminal incidents and carrying significant financial debts. In addition to the murder charge, Hilton is facing charges related to a separate knife attack from February 2023, classified as aggravated assault.
The process will continue on March 31, 2025. In the event of a conviction, he faces a long prison sentence, with the verdict expected in mid-April 2025.

2025 / 07 - Catch up issue
Aperçu of the week
“After all, we now have so many strangers in the country that a Holocaust would be worthwhile again.”
(Marcel Grauf, parliamentary staff member of the AfD in a chat transcript)
Bad News of the Week
Two attacks shake the Alpine region: in Munich, a perpetrator deliberately drove his car into a crowd of people; in Villach in Carinthia, Austria, a man attacked others with a knife. In both cases, the crime took place in broad daylight. In both cases there were fatalities. In both cases, the attackers were Arab asylum seekers. As a result, the focus is almost reflexively only on the migrant background. Once again, a fanatical radical who has no place here. Close the borders!
This is happening at an inopportune time in both countries. There are elections in Germany next Sunday. And the more right-wing parties have managed to ensure that the political discourse is almost exclusively focused on the topic of migration - or even remigration, if the far-right AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany) has its way. In Austria, on the other hand, coalition negotiations have just broken down and new elections are on the cards. In which the already leading right-wing populists of FPÖ (Freedom Party für Österreich / for Austria) with their slogan “Build Fortress Austria” would gain even more support.
The mood is changing all over Europe. Arab-looking fellow citizens are increasingly becoming victims of prejudice, “knife men” and “headscarf girls” are still among the more harmless nicknames that have now become socially acceptable. The overreaction will not only make actual immigration more difficult, but will also act as a deterrent to highly qualified foreign specialists that Germany actually urgently needs. As we Germans are not having enough children, are an ageing society and the baby boomer generation will be retiring at a high cost in the coming years, we need almost half a million young immigrants who are willing to work hard for the labor market. That's not exactly good PR for recruiting.
Good News of the Week
The USA is currently rumbling through the Ukraine issue with heavy equipment. First, President Donald Trump says he expects Ukraine to provide rare earths worth 500 billion and that they should relinquish territories occupied by Russian troops. Then Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg justifies a phone call between Trump and his despot buddy Vladimir Putin, which was not coordinated with either Ukraine or the allies, by saying that his boss "wants to take the peace deal project into his own hands". At the same time, Defense Minister Pete Hegseth makes it clear during his inaugural visit to the Brussels headquarters of the defense alliance that the Europeans are expected to provide peacekeeping troops - without the support of the USA. Vice President J. D. Vance also confirmed that NATO membership for Ukraine was no longer an option. And then it was said by whoever that the interests of the Europeans would be taken into account, but that they would only be consulted and not directly involved in the negotiations. Boom.
From the perspective of an Ukrainian, I would ask myself whether these imperialist approaches from the other side of the Atlantic could be a sell-out of my country. The US plans and what Trump has negotiated are an “absolute strategic point victory” for Putin, analyzes ex-NATO strategist Stefanie Babst. It shows that an aggressor can commit war crimes and then be “rewarded” with a “bilateral meeting” with the new US president: “This means that we cannot be talking about any kind of peace agreement here, but ultimately about Ukraine's terms of surrender”.
To my great and positive surprise, the first thing this par force attitude with farcical aspects brought about was resistance. And from the whole of Europe. Volodymyr Selensky made it clear that his country could not be blackmailed and expected Europe to sit at the table during peace negotiations. And practically all of Europe forbade that geostrategic developments on their continent would be agreed over their heads. Solutions can only be found together, emphasizes the current EU Council President and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. That would indeed be an echo that neither Trump nor Putin would have expected: Europe more united than ever and armed with a solid self-confidence.
Personal happy moment of the week
I overlooked the holy florist holiday this year - Valentine's Day. But since my wife did the same, we were able to laugh about it together. So I was lucky...
I couldn't care less...
...about the ignorance and negligence that more and more countries are displaying when it comes to dealing with climate change. Only 10 out of 195 countries have submitted their climate plans on time in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Absurdly, this includes the USA, which will be pulling out. And not Germany, which still has a green party in government. But why should something work well in theory that fails in practice anyway?
It's fine with me...
...that Deutsche Bahn and the Railway and Transport Union (EVG) have been able to agree on a new collective wage agreement. Especially in winter, I don't want to have to read on the display board on a draughty platform that my train has been canceled because of a strike.
As I write this...
...I'm looking forward to a business meeting in the evening. To do me a favor, it's taking place in a restaurant where I really appreciate a specific meal. Since then I have been indulging in culinary anticipation.
Post Scriptum
I've been a few days behind with this blog since the beginning of the year and have only just managed to post my review at the end of the following week. Which is why it has been a little out of date recently. As there are federal elections next Sunday, which will bring fundamental change to Germany one way or another, I've kept this time rather short in order to be up to date again. Thank you for your understanding.

I wonder if all the cultural and linguistical uncanny valley nonsense I experience between German and Dutch stuff is a universal experience between closely related cultures/languages, or if this one is just uniquely headache enducing.
I wanna scream.

Inventur - Metzstrasse 11 (1975), Želimir Žilnik
One by one, 30 residents of a rental building go on camera, on the building’s stairs, to tell about their lives. Many of them have come to what was then West Germany as “guest workers”. Their home countries include Italy, Greece, Turkey, and other places with which Germany had signed labor recruitment agreements starting in 1955.

Sandra Schubert - Transport
TRANSPORT is an artistic work about the transformation process after the reunification of Germany and deals with the tension between memories and history. [...] In a file called “Image Documentations on Attacks on the Sea Border of the GDR”, I was fascinated by photographs of means of transport specially prepared or manufactured for the escape, such as a surfboard equipped with motor and black sail, even a self-constructed submarine – all documents of failed attempts to escape over the Baltic Sea.

Why Are German Companies Facing Challenges with Murex Migration?
Tumblr media
Murex is known as one of the most powerful platforms for trading, risk management, and post-trade operations. Yet, despite its incredible potential, many German companies are struggling with their Murex migration projects. This begs the question: why is this migration so challenging, and how can businesses overcome the obstacles? With the right Murex Migration Services Germany, these hurdles can turn into opportunities for growth and efficiency.
Understanding the Complexity of Murex Migration
Migrating to Murex isn’t just about switching from one system to another. It involves a complete overhaul of business processes, workflows, and technology stacks. For German firms, especially those operating in industries with strict regulatory standards, the stakes are even higher.
Why Is Murex Migration So Challenging?
Customization Needs: Every company has unique requirements, and Murex often needs to be tailored to meet specific business goals. This customization adds layers of complexity to the migration process.
Data Migration Risks: Transferring large volumes of sensitive financial data to Murex requires precision. Errors in data migration can lead to costly disruptions and compliance issues.
Integration with Existing Systems: German companies often operate on a mix of legacy and modern systems. Ensuring Murex integrates seamlessly with existing technology is a significant challenge.
Skill Shortages: The specialized expertise needed for Murex implementation and migration is scarce, making it difficult for companies to find the right talent or partners.
Real-Life Stories: Struggles with Murex Migration
Imagine a large financial institution in Frankfurt attempting to migrate its operations to Murex. They underestimated the time required to customize workflows and faced delays when unexpected data inconsistencies emerged. Without expert Murex Migration Services Germany, the company had to spend additional resources to resolve these issues, delaying the go-live date by several months.
Another company, a mid-sized investment firm, tried to handle the migration in-house. They soon realised they lacked the necessary expertise and had to bring in external consultants mid-project. This not only increased costs but also added to the confusion and stress of the migration process.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
Delays, budget overruns, and operational disruptions are just a few of the consequences of poorly managed Murex migration projects. For German companies already navigating stringent regulatory landscapes, these risks are unacceptable.
Overcoming Challenges with the Right Support
The good news is that these challenges are not insurmountable. With professional Murex Migration Services Germany, companies can streamline their migration process and achieve a seamless transition to Murex. Here’s how:
Expert Guidance for Customisation
Specialised Murex migration services understand the nuances of German businesses and can tailor the platform to align perfectly with a company’s operational needs.
