today is a great day, because I'm going to see Minus One Minus Color. First time I've ever went to a movie by myself but I'm so excited because I am in love with this Godzilla in particular.

MCE Best of 2024: Honorable Mention

Movies: Godzilla Minus One

Our annual honorable mention section starts off with a pair of films from Japan featuring icons that are inspired from 2 periods of history.

In the waining days of World War II a Japanese kamikaze pilot escapes the devastation of an island from a sea creature known as Godzilla.

Returning home, he ends up stumbling into a family situation supporting an orphaned woman and a baby she had picked up.

All the while the US with the infancy of the Cold War unexpectedly gives Godzilla its familiar look sending the creature and the country beginning to recover on a collision course.

There has been many iterations of Godzilla over the years and it is fitting that with the 70th anniversary one of the very best films since the original unexpectedly gives a lot of focus and heart to the human characters.

Along with providing some of Godzilla’s most shocking moments for a mere $15 million.

What Tamashi Yamazaki spectacularly accomplishes here as not only the director but VFX supervisor is to give depth and gravitas to the icon 9 years before Serizawa would first encounter him.

And when this icon of film cannot only find an audience well beyond Japan, but claim an academy award as well this should stand the test of time.

As much as we wanted to see more of shin, Minus One can definitely go lower.

SUM 22: Japans most famous icon gets it’s biggest win outside of the US with the chilling look at a country trying to come back, only to get sent back further.

I absolutely love how gay the Sonic franchise has gotten in recent years, I’d argue this side of the franchise has been a small part in helping maintain relevancy in recent years as it’s one of the few big franchises that’s openly supportive of LGBT

Seriously imagine telling someone years back there would be a lot of (near canon) yaoi content of Eggman

The fact that Godzilla's atomic breath actually scorches him in Godzilla Minus One is a fantastic little detail.

Remember when we all saw this clip and we thought "what the hell did that to him?"

But that was him! His wrath, his fury, his flames burned so hot that it boiled the water around him and burned his flesh away. His roar isn't merely one of absolute victory, but also of indescribable suffering. A hate so powerful that it burns the one holding it is an apt metaphor.

Imagine the kind of pain he must be in, and yet he continues to freely use this terrible weapon, like stabbing a knife into someone while holding the blade. It's as if he couldn't care less.

"I know I will heal." he's probably thinking, "But you won't."

Obsessed with the ad to join the US Military playing before Godzilla Minus One. We get to watch this amazing film about the trauma of war, the struggle to rebuild after the destruction of bombings, the fight to value individual humans in the face of governments who see them as fodder AND THERE'S A FUCKING AD RIGHT BEFORE SAYING "THIS FILM WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE US MILITARY" !??!?! LIKE YEAH I GUESS IT KINDA WAS BUT----
