Seguidamente, Betzabeth Arguello se impuso 3-0 a la colombiana Sandy Para para asegurar el bronce en los 53 kg, una categoría dominada por la cubana Laura Herín, que venció en la final a Karla Acosta de México. En los 57 kg la criolla Betsabeth Sarco también se colgó un bronce luego de derrotar10-0 a la boricua Nes Rodríguez. Ángela Álvarez (Cuba) subió a lo más alto del podio y Susana Lozano (México) con el segundo lugar. Astrid Montero, en tanto, doblegó 10-0 a la puertorriqueña Karoline Ortiz por el bronce de los 62 kg, mientras que María Santana (Cuba) y Alexis Gómez (México) fueron oro y plata, respectivamente. Maria (2019)

Plot: Years ago, Maria (Cristine Reyes) faked her own death and escaped from her life as a gangland assassin. But her old gang find her and kill her husband and daughter, setting her on a path of revenge.

Review: Off on a revenge mission against their former employers after the death of a loved one, Maria plays out like a female, Filipino John Wick. Only there���s more chance of Wick getting further sequels.

Finding a home on Netflix is likely to help garner more of an audience, and the inevitable cult following, but the film just isn’t good enough for anything more than that. The mixture of languages will be grating enough to anybody trying to follow it; there is just enough English to make you wonder if the subtitles are necessary, but then they will switch back mid-sentence - often multiple times in the space of one scene. It would be helpful to viewers if they spoke in one language throughout, or even just separate scenes.

It’s hard to discern character motivations at certain times, and this doesn’t help later on. While Maria’s reasoning is clear, what’s not is the thought process of the gangster she’s tracking down; is he an idiot, sloppy, or just really bad at his job? There is also a confusing moment when somebody comes out of retirement to help her; he was left alone, safe, because he was meant to have killed her, yet when it becomes apparent she’s not dead, the gang still stick to their side of it? It just feels like lazy writing more than anything.

The fight scenes are stylized, and yet nothing we haven’t seen before, and that could apply to the movie as a whole. It feels like it was a decent central idea which never fully came to fruition.

Twenty-five years ago, women from more than 30 Latin American and Caribbean countries came together in the Dominican Republic to find ways to address racism from a woman’s perspective. Their objective was to find how to fight for their political, social, and cultural rights. The day has been commemorated as Día de la Mujer Afrodescendiente since then.

Mama Llama, an Afro-Ecuadorian leader with Movimiento Afro Libre del Azuay, remembers that 1992 meeting and says that little has changed since that day. “After 25 years of the establishment of the date by la Organización de Naciones Unidas,” she told El Tiempo, “Afro-descendants continue our struggle to achieve several of the objectives that brought us together at that time.”

And while it’s a day to reflect on the injustices that still exist, it’s also a day to celebrate black womanhood. Día de la Mujer Afrodescendiente focuses on the strength of the women who are working to break the cycle of racism and sexism in their countries – women who have fought hard for equal rights and who have paved the way for other Afro Latin Americans.

In honor of July 25, we’ve compiled a list of nine women who have broken barriers, fought against racism, and heightened visibility for Afro Latin Americans.
