Every October UCF celebrates Diversity Week and for 2020 it runs from October 19 – 23. The theme is Stronger Together: Unified! Connected! Family! This highlights how together we can make UCF and the surrounding community stronger and more connected with each other.
One of the fantastic things about UCF is the wide range of cultures and ethnicities of our students, staff, and faculty. We come from all over. We’re just as proud of where we are from as we are of where we are now and where we will be heading in future.
UCF Libraries is offering a full calendar of virtual Diversity Week activities from family friendly crafts to talks by area experts and film discussions. Don’t miss out on our community showcase which features UCF alumni and faculty and how they support the Knight community. We even have digital puzzles and downloadable coloring pages. And you can also add your voice to the 2020 UCF story by participating in our digital time capsule. To learn about the upcoming events visit: guides.ucf.edu/diversityweek
Join the UCF Libraries as we celebrate diverse voices and subjects with these suggestions. Click on the link below to see the full list, descriptions, and catalog links for the featured UCF Celebrates Diversity titles suggested by UCF Library employees. These and additional books are on display in the new 4th floor Reading Room.
And thank you to every Knight who works to help others feel accepted and included at UCF!
A Faithful Reading Partner: a story from a Hakka village by SuHua Huang A welcome addition to dual language literature, the story is about growing up among the Hakka people in Taiwan. In order to succeed, it is important for children to have a reading partner. But in this case, it is a dog with which the children develop deep friendships as they share their books with him. A sub-current to the main story is one of being a minority within a minority and success, which though longed for, inevitably contains sadness wrapped within its joy. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
Discrimination and Disparities by Thomas Sowell Challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation or genetics. It offers its own new analysis, based on an entirely different approach--and backed up with empirical evidence from around the world. The point is not to recommend some particular policy "fix", but to clarify why so many policy fixes have turned out to be counterproductive, and to expose some seemingly invincible fallacies behind many of those policies Suggested by Cynthia Kisby, Administration
Equality and Diversity: phenomenological investigations of prejudice and discrimination by Michael D. Barber Examples of prejudice against Jews, women, African Americans, and other minority groups are reported almost daily by the media. Despite educational programs to counteract prejudicial attitudes, this seemingly intractable problem remains an ongoing concern, not only in the United States but throughout the world. It is an interesting and often overlooked fact that the subject of prejudice has been the focus of major works by three prominent philosophers in the phenomenological tradition, works that still offer many insights into contemporary attempts to understand this social problem. Michael Barber examines this striking convergence of interests by these three philosophers and explores the significance of phenomenology for analyzing prejudice as expressed in anti-Semitism, sexism, and racism. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Hacking Diversity: the politics of inclusion in open technology cultures by Christina Dunbar-Hester We regularly read and hear exhortations for women to take up positions in STEM. The call comes from both government and private corporate circles, and it also emanates from enthusiasts for free and open source software (FOSS), i.e. software that anyone is free to use, copy, study, and change in any way. Ironically, rate of participation in FOSS-related work is far lower than in other areas of computing. A 2002 European Union study showed that fewer than 2 percent of software developers in the FOSS world were women. This book is an ethnographic investigation of efforts to improve the diversity in software and hackerspace communities, with particular attention paid to gender diversity advocacy. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Mothers Work: confronting the Mommy Wars, raising children, and working for social change by Michelle Napierski-Prancl Through a series of focus group interviews and an analysis of the media and popular culture, Napierski-Prancl explores the institution of motherhood and the arenas in which mothering occurs while analyzing how mothers feel about themselves, each other, and the culture that situates them against one another. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
On the Freedom Side: how five decades of youth activists have remixed American history by Wesley C. Hogan As Wesley C. Hogan sees it, the future of democracy belongs to young people. While today's generation of leaders confronts a daunting array of existential challenges, increasingly it is young people in the United States and around the world who are finding new ways of belonging, collaboration, and survival. That reality forms the backbone of this book, as Hogan documents and assesses young people's interventions in the American fight for democracy and its ideals. As Hogan reveals, the the civil rights movement has often been carried forward by young people at the margins of power and wealth in U.S. society. This book foregrounds their voices and gathers their inventions--not in a comprehensive survey, but as an activist mix tape--with lively, fresh perspectives on the promise of twenty-first-century U.S. democracy. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Pippa Park Raises Her Game by Erin Yun Life is full of great expectations for Korean American Pippa Park. It seems like everyone, from her family to the other kids at school, has a plan for how her life should look. So when Pippa gets a mysterious basketball scholarship to Lakeview Private, she jumps at the chance to reinvent herself by following the "Rules of Cool." At Lakeview, Pippa juggles old and new friends, an unrequited crush, and the pressure to perform academically and athletically while keeping her past and her family's laundromat a secret from her elite new classmates. But when Pippa begins to receive a string of hateful, anonymous messages via social media, her carefully built persona is threatened. As things begin to spiral out of control, Pippa discovers the real reason she was admitted to Lakeview and wonders if she can keep her old and new lives separate, or if she should even try. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
Sexuality, Equality, and Diversity by Diane Richardson and Surya Monro Investigating the dynamics of identity and sexual citizenship in a changing world, this compelling text explores key debates around human rights and representation, policy and resistance. Incorporating theory with original research, this is a thought-provoking insight into sexuality and diversity in a global age. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Shame: how America's past sins have polarized our country by Shelby Steele Part memoir and part meditation on the failed efforts to achieve racial equality in Americathis work advances Shelby Steele's provocative argument that "new liberalism" has done more harm than good. Since the 1960s, overt racism against blacks is almost universally condemned, so much so that racism is no longer, by itself, a prohibitive barrier to black advancement. But African Americans remain at a disadvantage in American society, and Steele lays the blame at the feet of white liberals. According to Steele, liberals have refused to acknowledge the country's progress over the past 50 years, in part because their notions of white guilt and black victimization help preserve their position of power over blacks. Suggested by Cynthia Kisby, Administration
The Boy Who Became a Dragon: a Bruce Lee story by Jim Di Bartolo This book presents a biography of the martial arts legend, describing his childhood in Hong Kong and how it was shaped by World War II, and his success as an international star. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
This Promise of Change: one girl's story in the fight for school equality by Jo Ann Allen Boyce and Debbie Levy In 1956, one year before federal troops escorted the Little Rock 9 into Central High School, fourteen year old Jo Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee. At first things went smoothly for the Clinton 12, but then outside agitators interfered, pitting the townspeople against one another. Uneasiness turned into anger, and even the Clinton Twelve themselves wondered if the easier thing to do would be to go back to their old school. This is the heartbreaking and relatable story of her four months thrust into the national spotlight and as a trailblazer in history. Suggested by Ven Basco, Research & Information Services
We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices edited by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson What do we tell our children when the world seems bleak, and prejudice and racism run rampant? With 96 lavishly designed pages of original art, poetry, and prose, fifty diverse creators lend voice and comfort to young activists. Suggested by Ven Basco, Research & Information Services

–––  𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲  .
proper bio:
cynthia’s parents were hit hard by the great depression. she was an accident, something she always knew, and growing up, things were always tense in her family. whether it was emotionally or financially, there was always something. her dad worked several part time jobs, and her mom picked up any little thing she could to help the family. one day when she was five, someone inquired about casting her in a commercial. from there, she soared, starring in little roles here and there, and nearly every commercial for a blonde child. the money helped her parents’ lives improve, and as a result, gave them a newfound love for her.
as she blossomed into a teenager, directors found new roles they wanted her in. cynthia started to become a real actress, and not just one who took side roles. once she turned eighteen, she packed her bags and headed to hollywood herself, determined that the little success she’d already had was a sign she could become a big star.
her arrival at hollywood was a less than she expected. older directors, managers, producers, and studio heads had propositions for her that she simply hadn’t expected. if she would form relationships with them, maybe she could be their next big thing. cynthia was uninterested in these sorts of arrangements and plainly said no. much to her surprise, she was given the chance to be come the next big thing anyway.
she found that many of her co-stars were much like the other men she’d met in hollywood. whenever they hit on her, she’d flirt with them back, much to their astonishment. cynthia realized that by taking advantage of her assets, she was much more intimidating and in control. she became shamelessly in charge of her love life, and by proxy, her professional life. she was unstoppable. by twenty-five, she’d been nominated for an academy award, had already starred in dozens of hits, and had been divorced. and she was still only just beginning.
extra info:
cynthia is complex and layered. she has definitely let the fame inflate her ego and mess with her head. she feels grounded, but she’s not as grounded as she wishes she was, and she knows, and she feels out of control and it drives her crazy
that said, she’s also mostly happy with her life, even if it isn’t going how she planned
and she might seem a bit full of herself, but she’s actually worked really hard to get where she is now and she still takes her work so seriously it’s ridiculous. her work is honestly her entire life
she’s a bit of sweet poison. she’ll ruin you, but you’ll want her to. you’ll thank her. you’ll want her to do it again because it was so worth it
she knows she’s a sex symbol and she loves it even if it’s too much for her sometimes in a weird way she can’t explain
what she really wants is love in a way that feels unconnected to who she is as Cynthia Brown and more who she is as cynthia
she’s just magnetic as hell really
definitely feels like i’m missing so much but we can chat and also she’ll just unfold
she also like. will manipulate people. and step on people. and take advantage of situations and people
she also knows how to manipulate the media to her advantage. she’s very calculating
–––  𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝  𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬  .
maybe an ex she reconnects with on occasion. he knows who she really is and what she’s really about but they just kinda click like that anyway
a really good industry friend who gets everything she goes through, and she gets everything they go through
enemy, whether it be for personal reasons, or work reasons. they can just really hate each other
she’ll ruin people’s lives happily, but also sometimes maybe she regrets it and who she’s become
the person she cheated on her husband with about four years back!
i just want to chat and plot! let’s talk and talk and talk!!

Kodak Black (1997) Afro-Haitian - rapper - filmed a woman doing sex acts without her consent, misogynist and colorism saying that “he prefers light-skinned women over those with dark skin” and that “light-skinned women are easier to break down” and “black women are "too gutter." Also said that he’d "wait" for the girlfriend of late rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was shot and killed a few days beforehand.

Narrative I took a walk to the end of my driveway. There, I was greeted by a small, red dot on my leg, in the nearby manzanita tree, and on the dirt embankment at the corner of my driveway where it meets (MyStreet). I saw the dot, knew what it was, and moved away slightly. A small puff of dirt occurred there in association with the sound of a muffled gun shot that followed, which came from the driveway of Bruce and Janet Freeburg of 535 (MyStreet). Bruce and Janet are also known as Brewsky and Jay-Bob Freeburg.
When I looked to see who had shot at me, a red honda station wagon, about a 1990 model, was driven away from the Freeburg's driveway, and then to the address at 598 (MyStreet) where that car is known to belong at. 598 (MyStreet) is the home of Rick & Cynthia Manning. The Manning's are part of a terror cell known as "Medical Democrats", or "Med Dem's", as they are known locally.
It appears as though Rick Manning shot at me with a firearm with a red laser aiming device but was not successful and missed.
The murder attempt was assisted with the people at 434 (MyStreet) , Jeffrey and Sandra Monroe. They provided that there was something fir me to look at, the car they were driving coming down the road was planned as part of the attempt and designed to provide that I would stand in a place that suited the shooter from Freeburg's.
I really don't believe that Josephine County Sheriff will do anything at all to help stop the attempts to kill me, I am only writing to appease the federal investigation.
It is far more likely that Burton Mitchel Dietrick of 601 (MyStreet) will provide impostor Sheriff's Deputies to come talk to me, as he has done in the past, The Dietricks are people who do contract excavation work for Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Truck and equipment operators that worl in association with the Burton Mitchel Dietrick serve as impostor Sheriff deputies. They have the uniforms, badges, guns, and squad cars that once belonged to the Josephine County Sheriff's office and use that equipment and more to kill and capture American Citizens in Josephine County, Oregon.
There is a lot to say about today's attempted murder, however, today is just ANOTHER attempted murder. The thing that makes today's attempted murder different, or unusual, or otherwise interesting enough that I decided to write this complaint, is the use of the red laser and long range shooting. Typically, the assassins come into my home, or try to run me over with their cars and trucks, today they used a gun from a distance. That's the only difference that makes today any different than any other day.
Burton Mitchel Dietrick is also part of the Screen Actor Guild terror cell that distributes heroin to Seventh Day Adventist terror cells locally. He is not a heroin dealer, he does not sell heroin. Mr. Dietrick distributes heroin in large quantities, divided up for persona; use by the Seventh Day Adventist Terror Soldier armies that have taken control of most of the State. The SDA uses Nitrous Oxide mixed with Versed airborne gas to capture, torture, farm of assets, kill, and then replace American Citizens in Oregon. The gas is powerful and effective for use as a means of capturing human beings for slaughter.
Use a lighter, burn candles, the gas is volatile and flammable, a small flame clears the air so you can breathe and think clearly.
Congratulations to the Josephine County Sheriff's office, you have successfully managed to provide an environment where terrorists thrive, Americans are slaughtered, and you have provided a gateway for a coup take-over of the USA. Bravo!

When she was 10, she was placed in a foster home and moved from one home to another until she turned 14, then was taken by a widow who later she became very attached to, and who treated her like a daughter. When she came of age, she started looking for her parents, seeking for answers, determined to know the truth. She found out that her father left her mother when she was pregnant and her mother started drinking and died after a few years. She never looked for her father, realizing that she didn’t want to have a relationship with him, since he abandoned her and her mother. After school she enrolled in the police academy and graduated successfully after a few years.

Tumblr media
Relationships:
Earl Whitehorse: It’s like the dad she never had. She loves how grumpy he always is, and she mocks him sometimes, telling him that he’s getting old and should retire. She admires him, and would always try to take a leaf out of his choices.
Joey Hudson: At first they just didn’t get along, the both of them being stubborn and proud, but eventually learned to coexist and would sometimes join forces against Staci and Freya.
Staci Pratt: Staci is like a big brother to her. Sometimes they quarrel, but they always find a way to make peace. She looks up at him and sometimes asks him for some career and personal advice, because she knows she can count on him.
Faith Seed: She knows that the young lady has gone through some difficult times is her life, and sometimes would feel sorry for her, but, despite everything, she doesn’t sympathize too much with Faith, as she chose to be on Joseph’s side.
John Seed: According to her, John’s the most dangerous one of the Seed brothers, being so obsessed with sin, guilt and atonement. What scares her the most is that he would do anything for the Project, including sacrificing his own people without even blinking. He’s ruthless and sadistic, and she has a feeling he doesn’t care about any of his people, so she tends to be very careful around him, not knowing what he could do next.
Jacob Seed: She thinks he’s the most pragmatic and practical one of all the Seed brothers, but she tries to stay as far away as possible from him, because she knows that when he wants something he will sure as hell get it, so she tries not to underestimate him or any of his soldiers.
Joseph Seed: She doesn’t know what to think of him. His chilled and calm attitude scares her much more than the aggressive mask of the Baptist, and she thinks he could be capable of everything. He’s manipulative and charismatic, and she would sometimes have doubts whether he would be lying or telling the truth about the Collapse. She knows he’s a dangerous man, but sometimes she tends to forget how dangerous he can be.
Freya Williams: They get along pretty well, even though it’s not always easy to be around Freya. Dawn always tried to be kind and polite, but never passive, since she doesn’t let anyone push her around, and between the two girls started developing a sort of mutual respect and trust.
Aiden Lewis: Her best friend, her partner in crime. Aiden is like a brother to her, Dawn always having dinner at his house when they were younger. His family always treated her like a daughter,  they immediately bonded when they first met and since then they’ve become really close. He’s always able to cheer her up, telling jokes and making her laugh, but he also knows when to stop making fun of his friends and Dawn is grateful for that.
Riley Denvers: Dawn and Riley have a somewhat mother-daughter relationship. They sometimes fight, but always re-conciliate - mostly thanks to Hannah’s help - because they are not capable of being mad at each other for more than 10 minutes. They’ve known each other for a very long time and know they can always count on each other, no matter how angry or mad they can be.
Hannah Thompson: Dawn was the first person to stand up for Hannah in school, and since then they became really good friends, taking care of each other and always being there in times of need. Hannah always knows what’s the right thing to say, so Dawn knows that she can tell her anything and never be judged for it.
Hunter Davis: She likes to talk about serious things with Hunter, since he’s very smart and cultured. She admires her friend, he had to grow up fast and never relied on anyone else, and even though he’s not very good at socializing, he’s a good listener and knows when to be there for his friends.
Sasha Maxwell: They met a few times, when Dawn went to John’s bunker for the Confession or when Joseph visited his brother, and Sasha was always kind to her, treating her tattoos when John marked her, but Dawn couldn’t believe she was there by choice and not as a prisoner and always tried to convince her that she was on the wrong side of the war and that Joseph wasn’t as holy as he wanted others to believe.
Jake and Sean Denvers: soon
Judith Denvers: soon
Scarlett Reed: soon
Tyler Reed: soon
Tumblr media
Other information:
At the police station, she’s the diplomatic one. She always tries to talk things through, trying to avoid the fight as much as she can, but wouldn’t hesitate to use her gun if needed.
She always tried to stood up for those who couldn’t do it for themselves, even in high school, helping Hannah when no-one did.
She went through some difficult times in her childhood. She never forgave her parents for leaving her, and she still feels so much anger towards them. Most of all she felt abandoned, and during her time in foster homes she felt as if no-one cared about her.
After having found her real parents, she found out that her real surname was Monroe, but never even thought about taking it. She adopted Cynthia’s surname instead,
She was kind of a troublemaker in high school, always being in detention with Aiden for skipping classes.
She loves her Border Collie Daisy more than everything. She’s a dog person in general, though she also likes cats, but she never had one because Daisy tends to be very possessive and would never let a cat go near Dawn.
Her favorite drink is hot chocolate, she would drink it all day, possibly on the couch, listening to the cracking of fire and watching the snow falling outside her window.
When she was younger she wanted to be a social worker, as she wanted to help children who were not lucky enough to have a decent family, but eventually acknowledged the fact that she was too emotionally involved to do her job properly. She would have probably just punched all terrible parents in the face.
She’s not good at trusting people, so she tends to push people away because she doesn’t want to get hurt or to hurt others. For that reason, she never had long relationships. She’d really like to settle down, but due to her trusting issues she never allowed herself to be happy and to find that person she wants to spend her life with.
Dawn is a fan of post-apocalyptic and dystopian movies and books. She particularly loves The Walking Dead, Mad Max: Fury Road, and I Am Legend, and her favorite book is Lord of The Flies.

This weekend was awesome!
We got into Monroe around noon on Thursday. We went straight to Dad's house to hang out. We made a bond fire outside, had beers, and grilled lots and lots of yummy food. The pups love being out at dad and Cynthia's place. So much room to run and play. It was a good night!
Friday we had lunch with Nunu and then went shopping. In Corsicana we don't have any cool places to do any shopping, so being in Monroe Greg and I wanted to take an afternoon to shop. We went to Best Buy, TJMaxx, PetSmart, Target, Gamestop.. a few shops downtown too. We got a lot of cool stuff!
Friday night was a lot of fun. We went to Athena's with Mom for dinner. Man, I love Greek food. THEN! We did an escape room! I've been wanting to do an escape room with Dad and Greg for FOREVER. Cynthia couldn't come (long story), but we wanted more than just the 3 of us so we invited uncle Jeff and aunt Terri. It was so much fun!!! Greg's been talking about it ever since lol
Saturday morning was so nice. We stayed the night with Mom. I slept SO WELL OMG. We had breakfast then went to Verizon. Greg and I have been talking about getting on the same phone plan for MONTHS. Well, we finally decided it's time. And while we were there, Greg insisted on getting me a new phone. I was hesitant at first. I loved my Galaxy Note5, best phone I've ever had. But Greg was right.. I've had it for years and I really needed to upgrade bad. So I got a Google Pixel 3 XL! I was planning on just getting the latest version of the Galaxy Note since I loved my 5 so much. But after speaking to some of the employees at Verizon and Best Buy, then doing my own research, I decided to give the Pixel a shot! So far, I love it!
Saturday night we went to hang out with Morgan and Andrew! Watched a movie and ordered some Johnny's pizza.. the pups and the ferrets had fun playing together. Well, not Rosalie. Rosalie has never liked Jade nor Rey. I think they freak her out. Lol
Sunday Greg, mom and I went to Bastrop to have lunch with Granny. Kevin was supposed to come, but he's been really sick. Mom wasn't feeling well either really. She hurt her shoulder a while back and has been in a lot of pain. I told her if she'd rather just relax at home, Greg and I could go to Bastrop alone, but she insisted on coming.
We didn't hang out with Granny for as long as I would have liked. Only 2-3 hours. But Greg and I wanted to leave at a decent time so we wouldn't be getting back to Corsicana crazy late..
We got back home about 7:30. Even though it was a super great weekend, we were very happy to be home. The pups were happy to be home too and the kitties missed us

um, this might be dumb after you've been blogging about it for a few days, but ... what is miscast?
Hi, friend! It’s not dumb at all!
MisCast is an annual concert - technically the full name is the Manhattan Class Company (or MCC) Theater’s MisCast Gala - with the aim to honor individuals in the theater world while raising funds for MCC’s productions and programs, particularly geared toward youth/young artists.
The idea of the MisCast gala is to have “Broadway’s hottest stars perform songs in roles they would never be cast in.”
About 90% of the time this means genderswapping the songs - it’s the easiest answer, and often with the best results, I think. XD
For example:
Lea Salonga singing the song “Why God, Why?” from Miss Saigon (a show she starred in, but the song belongs to her character’s love interest)
Keala Settle singing “The Impossible Dream” belonging to the title character of The Man of La Mancha
Cynthia Erivo singing “A Piece of the Sky” from Yentl
Jeremy has become something of a MisCast pro (even though he hasn’t been on Broadway in five years, they keep accepting him back as one of their “hottest stars” and isn’t that precious)
Cheyenne Jackson and Jeremy Jordan singing the Violet and Daisy’s song “Who Will Love Me As I Am?” from Side Show (and it’s funny because they’re supposedly Siamese twins but Jeremy has to stand on a box to match Cheyenne’s height)
Jeremy performing “Let It Go” from Frozen to throw shade at Johnathan Groff (Kristoff) for “stealing his thunder”.
and the classic “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from Funny Girl.
BUT THIS YEAR WAS SO GOOD.
LOOK AT JORDAN FISHER SINGING “I’M HERE”
youtube
CAISSIE LEVY PERFORMING FROM THE LAST FIVE YEARS
(the lyrics are a little past g-rated, but I love it and I love Caissie, so there we go)
youtube
And while I’m desperately hoping Sara Bareilles and James Monroe Iglehart’s performances of “Anthem” (Ragtime) and “Satisfied” (Hamilton) will be uploaded soon, at least we do have…
JEREMY JORDAN SINGING “SHE USED TO BE MINE” FROM WAITRESS after sitting beside the show’s creator and original leading woman the whole night.
youtube
So. Yeah.
That’s MisCast. There are some weird videos from these nights, and also a lot more amazing performances I didn’t link to here, so there’s more to see if you’re interested in checking them out. :)

It threatened to cause a painful and possibly fatal blockage but docs at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital put their best foot forward until they finally managed to extract the slime-coated sneaker

 Cynthia Wingler, 78
Tumblr media
Cynthia Rector Wingler, our sweet Nana, peacefully went to her eternal home on January 3, 2020 at the, as she said, "older than dirt" age of 78.  She was surrounded by her "best buddies" in her home when her gentle spirit was released from her well-worn shell. She said, "If I knew I was gonna live this long I would've taken better care of myself." We're convinced she left before having to face another cold winter, "Oooshie!"
Cynthia was born to Kermit Rector and Louise Davis Rector on July 25, 1941 in Huntersville, NC. The reunion party has now begun with her parents and her humble big brother, Rev. Dean Rector and her best friend and identical twin sister, Sylvia Rector Caudill.
As a devoted and patient caregiver, Cynthia proudly served as an anesthetist for over 30 years at the Wilkes and surrounding area hospitals.  She left a lasting legacy of how grueling long hours can successfully be faced with the utmost safety and infectious laughter. She managed to do so while always looking her best with every hair in place.  Thanks, Louise Eller!
Her son, David Wingler (the "thorn and her rose"), and daughter-in-law, Anita Wingler (she always liked her best:) as well as her two granddaughters, Caitlin and Kaleigh Wingler (that she loved the absolute most) will miss the daily excuse to eat ice cream, "Yummy, yummy".  She also leaves behind: brother-in-law Delmar Caudill, nephew Terry Rector (wife Vickie), and niece Kim Rector as well as her great nieces, nephews, and friends.
A family graveside service will be held and a Celebration of Life event will take place when it's not so cold outside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
In her memory, make someone laugh today (preferably in the most inappropriate time).  Laughter is the closest distance between two people.
JoAnn Blackburn, 76

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Carol Joy Holleman; and two brothers, James "Pete" Monroe Holleman and Bill Holleman.
She is survived by her husband, Charlie Uelius Blackburn, of the home; one daughter, Mary Ann Blackburn, of the home; one son, Randy Neal Blackburn and wife, Joan,  of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Alexandra Nicole Blackburn and Garrett Davis Blackburn; and one sister, Mary Edith Sparks of Roaring River.

 Georgia Faw, 90
Tumblr media
Mrs. Georgia Mae Faw, age 90 passed away surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness on January 1, 2020. Georgia was born on September 26, 1929 in Wilkes County to George Odell and Ella Mae Day Moore. She lived in the Brushy Mountain Community of Wilkes County her entire life with the exception of a short time when she and husband, John Winfred Faw, lived in Blowing Rock, NC when they first married.
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, George "Odell" and Ella Moore, a brother, Paul Moore, a sister, Altha Lee McNeil, an infant brother, Howard, and her husband, John Winfred Faw.  Georgia is survived by her children, Anita Crunk (Sid) of Moravian Falls, NC, Richard Faw and longtime companion, LouAnn Thompson, of Kannapolis, NC. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Sarah Brame (Phillip) of Winston-Salem, NC, Emily Crunk of Concord, NC, Tamara Faw of Wilkesboro, NC, and Tesha Hammonds (Chris) of North Wilkesboro, NC, a brother, Jack Moore, of Yadkinville, NC, and 7 great grandchildren.
A native of Wilkes County, NC  she and her husband, John Winfred Faw, married on July 9, 1946 and were married 61 years prior to his death on September 22, 2007.  She would often joke that her age was the only lie she ever told since John was her sweetheart throughout his time serving in World War II and they got married as soon as he was discharged from the army, going to York, SC to elope when she was 16 years old.  They lived for a time in Blowing Rock shortly after they were married but came back to Wilkes County to build their home in the 1950s. Georgia wanted children more than anything and God blessed her with two, a son and daughter.
Georgia wanted to be a stay-at-home mom when her children were young but, upon her youngest child starting school at Wilkesboro  Elementary School, Georgia began employment in the Wilkesboro School Cafeteria and worked there throughout the entire time her children were in school. Since cooking for others was the highlight of her life, she began work at the Northwestern Bank Cafeteria after her youngest child graduated from high school. When the bank cafeteria closed, she then began work at the Cottage House Restaurant and ended her employment years at Lowes Midtown Plaza in the deli.  She left public employment to babysit her daughter's two children which Georgia always said was the best job she ever had. Since John and Georgia's home was always the place for her children's friends to "hang out" when they were young, Georgia enjoyed the same with her grandchildren and had some of their friends who stayed with her as well.
Georgia was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in the Brushy Mountain Community as long as her health allowed.  She loved attending church and her church family was important to her. Most importantly, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and served him in many ways over her lifetime from playing the autoharp with her father playing guitar in her younger days to teaching Sunday school, working with Vacation Bible School, working with the Women's Missionary Union, helping to prepare meals and chaperoning youth trips, among other things.
With two heart attacks in the summer of 2016 started the decline of her health and she lived at home with assistance until July 2018 when she went to Villages of Wilkes Traditional Living. There she made friends who will always be dear to the heart of her family.
Funeral Services were January 5, at New Hope Baptist Church in the Brushy Mtn. Community with Rev. Michael Blevins, Rev. Jonah Parker, and Rev. Scott Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Wake Forest Baptist Health Hospice. 126 Executive Drive, Suite 110, Wilkesboro, N.C. 28697 or New Hope Baptist Church,  9134 Brushy Mtn. Road, Moravian Falls, N.C. 28654.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YAEL SMITH FOR WINNING THE 2019 W. EUGENE SMITH GRANT FOR HUMANISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY THE CLASSICS | THE LATIN AMERICAN FOTO FESTIVAL Miss Rosen for Feature Shoot
With the second edition of the Bronx Documentary Center’s Latin American Foto Festival, curators Michael Kamber and Cynthia Rivera provide a space for photographers living and working in Latin America to tell their stories on their terms. The Festival, held in nine venues throughout the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx, gave some 50,000 residents — many of whom are Latinx immigrants — the opportunity to engage with stories from their homelands through exhibitions, workshops, tours, and panel discussions.
The history of colonized lands is rarely told by those who have suffered the fate of centuries of imperialism that have systemically decimated the people and the lands of every continent outside Europe. Over the past 200 years, the people of Latin America have fought for independence and sovereignty, and against puppet regimes installed by the United States that first began in 1823 under the Monroe Doctrine.
As ICE raids systemically target Black and Latinx communities, the Foto Festival provides a pertinent moment to pause and reflect on the impact of white supremacy in its many forms, and the ways in which those it aims to exploit, oppress, and erase fight back in a struggle for life or death.
