Love at the first sight with NAOSHIMA!
If you know me for a little longer, you probably know that I love art and museum. This is one of the reasons (from so many reasons) why I love Naoshima even before I stepped on this little island. Naoshima, as a gateway to the Setouchi International Art Triennale that is held every three years, is a mecca of contemporary art. Much of Naoshima’s art was installed by Benesse Corporation. Unfortunately, I was unable to visit the museums there since most of them need pre-order tickets. The artworks are divided into three areas; Miyanoura Port, Honmura Port, and Benesse House Area with a total of 22 artworks.

As part of Kagawa Prefecture, which is famous for udon, this trip isn’t complete before trying Kagawa Udon and Naoshima Beer. And the best of the island is Kinosaki udon.

went to naoshima to visit the chichu art museum! this was one of the most beautiful art museums i have ever experienced in my entire life!! even though we were a little pressed for time, it was still a great experience :)
10/27/2019 - Sunday
woke up to many notifications and stayed in bed until 8:10am
got ready quickly and left the airbnb for some brekkie at 9am
got an iced coffee from doutour and went to the kawaramachi station towards takamatsu chikko
ate our toast while we waited for the train to arrive
once the train arrived we made our way to takamatsu chikko and went straight for the ferry port!
got our tickets right in time as the ferry was about to leave and we got seats up top; weather was perfect!!
ferry ride was about and hour and then once on naoshima we took the bus to chichu art museum; almost late for our ticket time and they almost didn’t let us in, but the man was really nice :’
stayed at chichu for about an hour; the pieces by turrell were interactive and seeing the monets was life changing omg ando is an insanely talented architect and his structure of the museum was art within itself; walter de maria !!! symmetry
we ate at the chichu cafe, which was adorable and we had chips and salsa with drinks :) i had some guava juice and IT WAS DELICIOUS the flavor we ate outside and sat on cute little braided wood pads
after chichu, walked back to the miyanoura port for the next ferry! stopped a little viewpoints along the way to take pics
made it to the red kusama right at the port and took lots of derpy pics and vids heheh very fun and we were able to go inside the pumpkin!
looked around the store while we waited for the ferry to open its doors, but didn’t find anything :(
back on ferry up top and i took a nap
went back to kawaramachi and looked for food, but it was already 4pm, so i had to dip for the airport!
took local bus for 45 min. to the airport, ate sanuki udon, ft’ed val, and waited for security to open at 6:15pm
got to my gate, did hw, wrote in val’s journal, and wrote a postcard :)
flew back to narita, took an expensive bus to shinjuku station and made it back to my dorm!
today was extremely successful! i was able to have an unforgettable art experience with turrell, ando, monet, and de maria. the turrells especially was so interesting because it was interactive and i was able to walk INTO the piece. i would love to visit naoshima again and bike around the entire island; bike rentals were so cheap omg but i don’t want to deal with the spiders WHY ARE THEY SO BIG?? besides that and other large bugs, the trees, flowers, and ocean was gorgeous!! i really would like to come back! i would say this was a successful weekend getaway :)
today was 5🎨/5🎨
places i went to:
Naoshima Island, Kagawa
Chichu Art Museum - 3449―1 Honmura, Naoshima, Kagawa District, Kagawa 761-3110 10🖼/10🖼

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Naoshima, Japan’s surreal Island of Modern Art
Tumblr media
Naoshima, a remote island in the Seto Inland Sea, is home for some tremendous contemporary art pieces dispersed throughout the Island. They’re also exhibited as part of permanent collections in museums such as the Chichu Art Museum, with its impressive concrete architecture tucked underground to preserve the island’s landscape.
One of the most emblematic installation is Yayoi Kusama’s Red Pumpkin standing near the ferry terminal exit in the Miyanoura port of Naoshima. It’s the first piece of art one discovers when arriving on the island.
