hi it's koma!

this'll be my first post ever so i wanted to start with something im super passionate abt, that being music! more specifically, playing, listening to and analyzing music, both theory wise and how it makes me feel! so here's day one of this stuff where ill be talking about mainly vocals! (i do all kinds of music, literally any genre so feel free to send me songs to listen to!)

SHISHAMO is a band ive been listening to alot at the office and there's something incredibly soothing about the lead singers vocals that helps me get through the day. This last song in the shishamo 7 album really nails that in for me. Yume de Aete mo (夢で逢えても | Even If You Meet in a Dream) is a great showcase of miyazaki asako-san's vocal abilities. In the verses, she's in incredible control of her voice, being in total control of pitch despite the ever shifting dynamics. She's able to shift the timbre of her voice as well, singing with a more cutesy, staccato type of singing, to a much more fleshed out legato. Being able to switch it up allows for a greater range of calmer and more expressive sections that contrast with each other to make the song that much more interesting.

oho but then comes the chorus...

The chorus in this song always give me chills, sometimes makes me tear up if im in the right mood... There's something about the way her voice quivers while she sings that makes it resonate with me. It feels to me like the quiver in your voice when you try and speak about something emotional. Fighting back against tears, heartache, anxieties, everything keeping you back from spilling out your heart and voice. I know myself to quiver in my voice while i sing as well out of nerves, but miyazaki makes it intentional and that's able to convey more than nervousness. AND THEN SHE'S STILL ABLE TO SING THIS STUFF WITH DYNAMIC RANGE! she quiets down for the last chorus before repeating again with so much passion and power it makes my chest feel tight with emotion.

thats all i have to say, but there's definitely so much more to this song beyond vocals. the guitar riff is so relaxed and chill and im in the process of learning it for myself! i can't even speak to the meaning of the lyrics but such is the universality of music where emotions can well up regardless of lyrical understanding! but im sure lyrics make it all the more better and i wish i could understand it fully myself.

Films of 2019: personal recommendations

I wouldn’t consider myself a film fan: in 2018, i only went twice to cinema and before that i didn’t put a foot in a cinema for at least 2 years. So 2019 was  exceptional for me: my local indie theatres had fantastic programs making a large place to asian cinema (almost as if it was a festival) and i ended up watching 12 films (few that i even even rewatch 2/3 times) in few days. 

Nationality matter a lot in my list, so here the details: 5 japanese films/documentary/animation, 5 chinese films/documentary, 1 korean film, 1 Singaporean film).  

2019 was the year of chinese independent cinema. My recommandation would thus be to start by the following chinese works but only if you’re not afraid of very long films, romantic slow paced stories with mindblowing edit and possibly confusing timeline. 

The elitist club of the directors/masters in full command of their art who produced true masterpieces:

Technically i watched it on tv because it was the only way but it got a theatrical release in few others countries, and it’s the essential complement to So Long, my son, in order to understand the full context of the film, so i kept it in this list..  

“I didn’t get the hype though i tried” category, also known as the unpopular opinion: 

Parasite by Bong Joo Hoo (South Korea).

Anyone who watch k-drama regularly would have guessed the major twist miles away. Since the construction of the film depends entirely on the narrative manipulation, once you removed it, there’s not much to enjoy. Everything else: acting and directing felt lazy, except Song Kang Ho who was completely underused.

J-Rock Band The Pillows Celebrates 30 Years with Feature Film Drama

  Although they are probably best known among anime fans for their musical stylings for the FLCL series, the Japanese rock band known as The Pillows have been touring since 1989, and to celebrate their 30th anniversary, the group is trying their hand at another cinematic medium: dramatic, live-action theatrical film.

    The new film, entitled Ousama ni Nare ("Become the King"), features music and an original story by Sawao Yamanaka (guitar and vocals for The Pillows) as well as a script and direction by Shûji Okui. The film stars actor Amane Okayama as Yuusuke, a young man who works in a ramen shop frequented by numerous Japanese rock bands. Yuusuke dreams of being a photographer, and he decides to follow his dreams by becoming a cameraman for live concert events.

Ousama ni Nare also features appearances by numerous musicians, including: TERU and JIRO of GLAY; Atsushi Horie, Hidekazu Hinata, and Shinpei Nakayama of Straightener; Hirotaka Takahashi of THE PREDATORS; Ryosuke Sasaki, Tomoya Tabuchi, Hiroaki Arai, and Hiroyuki Suzuki of THE KEBABS; yoko and Shinya Kusube of Casablanca; Hirata Panda, Beat Ryo, Hoshikawa Don't Let Me Down, Honma Domino, and Chiba O'Reilly of THE BOHEMIANS; Eiichi Miyamoto of syurispeiloff; Ena Fujita; and Asako Miyazaki, Aya Matsuoka, and Misaki Yoshikawa of SHISHAMO.

SHISHAMO - EL POWER TRIO QUE TE COCINA A FUEGO LENTO

Hoy les voy a hablar de uno de los tríos femeninos que captó mi fascinación en los últimos años, Shishamo.

Originarias de la ciudad de Kawasaki (sí, como las motos) en la prefectura de Kanagawa; este trío de músicas y amigas se formó el 2010 durante el primer año de secundaria de Asako Miyazaki, vocalista y guitarrista, y Aya Matsumoto, bajista, quienes ya eran amigas de la infancia. A ellas se les sumó la baterista Misaki Yoshikawa, a quien conocieron ese mismo año.

Nombraron a la banda Shishamo en referencia a un tipo de pez consumido habitualmente en Japón (así como llamar a tu banda Pejerrey ó Los Corvina). A partir del 2011, ya con composiciones propias, comenzaron a participar en concursos de bandas, ganando el gran premio principal y el de mejor vocalista en el concurso de Rock Adolescente de Hitachinaka.

Tras esto, consiguieron ese mismo año grabar su CD debut "Shukudai ga Owaranai" (traducido algo así como 'La tarea nunca acaba', título muy similar al primer ending de Yuyu Hakusho, pero no nos desviemos), un single distribuido por Tower Records. Desde ahí comenzaron un sólido ascenso, convirtiéndose en personalidades radiales para All Night Nippon, logrando sacar un recopilatorio de sus canciones de los últimos años a inicios del 2013, seguido del respectivo tour por Japón.

A mediados de ese año, tras terminar la secundaria, comenzaron los siguientes tours, festivales de verano y publicación de nuevos singles, culminando con su primer álbum de estudio en noviembre llamado solo Shishamo.

Desafortunadamente, y como toda historia también tiene sus bajos, Aya Matsumoto deja la banda cumpliendo la promesa que se hizo a sí misma de dejar el proyecto al cumplir 20 años (por qué te los llevas tan jóvenes ¿por qué?), siendo reemplazada por la bajista de nombre más parecido que encontraron, Aya Matsuoka. Aya Matsumoto, Aya Matsuoka, fácil ni se dan cuenta ¿verdad?

¡Mentira! Pero sí resulta una coincidencia un tanto perturbadora (como para top de Dross).

Con la formación una vez más completa con la nueva Aya, la banda sacó sus siguientes 3 álbumes de estudio: Shishamo 2, el 2015, Shishamo 3, el 2016, y Shishamo 4 este 2017. Y no, no es joda (oigan flacas, ni Maluma ¿eh?).

Ahora, pasando al sonido de la banda, aquí es donde explico el título del artículo. 'El power trío que te cocina a fuego lento' suena a que necesita alguna aclaración.

La mejor explicación tendría que darla directamente con su primera canción, Shukudai ga Owaranai, que dio el nombre a su primer single.

[Comencemos con el inicio de la canción. Un reef sencillo, como que simplón. Entra el bajo, simpaticón, y una batería lineal, nada de mucha apuesta. La voz, armónica, algo tímida, pero sólida. Entran coros, el bajo muestra más personalidad, la batería saca una cierta sabrosura, se van 'achorando' las chicas. Un breakdown que le da punche al bajo. La guitarra toma más fuerza, con varios quiebres atractivos. El coro es una mezcla de fuerza rockera y la misma timidez fresca del inicio. Espera ¿solo? Tiene buen feeling, y ya le dio sus pataditas a muchos guitarristas que conozco. Nuevo breakdown bajístico. Y un final sólido.]

Los primeros 30 segundos me auguraban una bandita más de niñas jugando a hacer música. Pero ahí comienza la magia. Buscas a quién compararlas ¿Un Scandal más, Stereopony, wannabees de Chatmonchi? No, estas chicas tienen su propia estrella. Mientras circulo por ese primer disco recopilatorio escucho unas chicas, unas artistas disfrutando lo que hacen, experimentando con rock juguetón ó popeado hasta baladitas armónicas suaves.

Un estilo general se conserva en el disco siguiente, aunque con un pequeño salto hacia guitarras más elaboradas y un bajo más integrado. Aquí es donde llegaron también los videoclips, empezando por Boku ni kanojo ga deki tan da, primera entrada del disco. En el video vamos viendo también la propuesta visual de la banda, enfocada en su sonido y potencia antes que el clásico 'miren que kawaiis somos' de otras agrupaciones.

Aún así, las baladas rockeras de mucho feeling también están presentes en este álbum, como Iki taku nai.

Sin embargo mi favorita de todo este período llegó casi al final del disco, con Kimi to no koto.

El siguiente disco llegó con guitarras más distorsionadas y un bajo más sólido y llamativo, producto de la entrada de Aya Matsuoka a la banda. El nuevo punche del trío puede sentirse en Boku, jitsuwa.

También puede sentirse un crecimiento musical en general y mayor soltura del trío, como se ve en Kimi to natsu fesu, último clip que grabaron con Aya Matsumoto, del primer single previo al segundo disco.

En este disco seguimos encontrando temas que exploran nuevos espacios musicales, como Hana.

Dejando al final mi favorito del disco, Sayonara no Kisetsu.

Ya para el 3er disco, Shishamo 3 (sí, ya sé), encontramos a la banda con una propuesta más madura, tanto en cuanto sonido como visualmente, como podemos ver en Nettaiya.

Voces más integradas, un bajo con más personalidad y la misma confiabilidad de la base de la batería de Misaki Yoshikawa. Pero a pesar de tener un Shishamo más sobrio y melódico aún quedan las canciones alegronas y positivas como Kimi to Gerende.

Aquí también podemos seguir encontrando canciones que coquetean con nuevos sonidos y estilos,  con resultados tan zuculentos como en Suiteiidoukyori y su toque western.

Ó Tabigaeri y su aura indie alternativa.

El 4to disco, Shishamo 4, estrenado el 22 de febrero de este año, nos trae 11 nuevas canciones al igual que sus predecesores. En el tenemos la misma esencia de la banda que conocimos desde el inicio, pero con la experiencia de los 4 discos anteriores. Tenemos un acompañamiento instrumental en canciones como Ashita mo.

Sorpresas de delicados tonos y voces suaves en Koi.

Como pudieron ver, ó mas bien oir, esta es una banda que te envuelve lentamente y luego no te suelta, que te lleva en un viaje musical placentero cuesta arriba. Un trío que se toma en serio su propuesta y te golpea más fuerte con cada canción.

¿Cómo suenan en vivo? Pues igual de geniales y con todo el punche que podrían esperar, habiendo tocado ya incluso en el legendario Budokan Arena de Tokyo.

Para los interesados en la letra de las canciones, pues aquí no hay sorpresas. Letras sencillas, emotivas, escritas por adolescentes al final de su días escolares. Testimonios de amores retribuidos y no retribuidos, ansiedades de una noche calurosa de verano, despedidas a ese sempai que siempre vieron en silencio, corazones inútilmente parchados con una curita, lo habitual.

Sobre lo que mencioné antes, creo que me retracto. Tal vez estas sí son 3 chicas jugando a hacer música. Porque el juego nunca deja de sorprendernos, y esta banda tampoco.

Western Tv shows and asian dramas were started in december, so i’m not really spending more time watching TV.

However, i did a real comeback to theatre thanks to my local indie cinemas which made a fantastic program of all the best recent asian releases! 

I’ve seen an Elephant sitting still (and might come back to watch it again), i intend too to watch next week Asako I&II, Shoplifters, The Castle of Cagliostro (an exceptional 1st release at theatre 40 years after Japan).

 And maybe if i’m in the mood: Long Day's Journey into Night but though i’m attracted by the subject, i hate the idea of a 3D film.
