Dueling a dragon -- Alan Craddock's cover art on White Dwarf 44, August 1983, was previously used on a 1982 Methuen edition of CJ Cherryh's Fires of Azeroth. This issue's credits incorrectly list Jim Burns as cover artist, omitting Craddock's name.

What would you recommend as a good intro to CJ Cherryh? You've several times talked very highly of her work, and I'm curious now.
Depends on your preferences.
If you're a fantasy fan, I'd start with The Dreamstone and/or Tree of Swords and Jewels. If you prefer fantasy that's edging a bit toward SF, then you want the "Morgaine Cycle" of books that begin with Gate of Ivrel, a great favorite of both mine and @petermorwood's . (Don't be weirded out by the first-edition Mike Whelan cover on Ivrel: Mike was being fabulously subversive on that.) If you prefer straightforward unambivalent hard SF, try the "Company Wars" books that begin with Downbelow Station. And there are the fabulous "Chanur" books, featuring an interstellar trading family of lioness-like hominids who get caught up with a member of the weird "human" species...
And all of that said: I have favorites among these that are standalones, or are "off the beaten track" of one or another of her major universes. My absolute favorite of the favorites is Hunter of Worlds, which is one of the best get-into-your-aliens'-minds books I know—unquestionably an influence on my Rihannsu work for Star Trek.
So there you have it. Pick a spot and jump in! You've got so much terrific reading ahead of you. :)

Tried a digital redraw of Christian Waller's Morgan Le Fay, c.1927
She who is first of them is more skilled in the healing art, and excels her sisters in the beauty of her person.  Morgen is her name, and she has learned what useful properties all the herbs contain, so that she can cure sick bodies.  She also knows an art by which to change her shape, and to cleave the air on new wings like Daedalus; when she wishes she is at Brest, Chartres, or Pavia, and when she will she slips down from the air onto your shores.
—Vita Merlini or The Life of Merlin, c. 1150

"Quarum que prior est fit doctior arte medendi
Excedit que suas forma prestante sorores
Morgen ei nomen didicit que quid utilitatis
Gramina cuncta ferant ut languida corpora curet
Ars quoque nota sibi qua scit mutare figuram
Et resecare nouis quasi dedalus aera pennis
Cum uult est bristi- carnoti- siue papie
Cum uult in uestris es aere labitur horis"

My 3d remake of the cover of C. J Cherryh's Gates of Ivrel, originally painted by Micheal Whelan. This cover is from the original 1976 yellow spine edition. I modeled it from the cover of my copy, which is actually the 1980s reprint, with slightly different text that covers more of the image.
I find it ironic how little the seemingly warm, desert like environment of the painting corresponds with the cold, wintry setting of the book.
but at the same time I think it does capture something about the characters and the story. the looming nature of the gate, and the dramatic unsheathing of Morgaine's sword are both import features of the novel.
the covers became more accurate as the series went on, but IMO they also became less interesting.
This is made in blender, with texture painting in substance painter.

@savvyzelda for Morgaine and Gramorr from Lolirock
Tumblr media
Gramorr stopped by the corner of the bookshelf and hesitated for a moment. Was that... crying? He scowled. He didn't have the time to deal with some "poor, heartbroken soul" right now, he had to find his book before anyone else recognizes it belongs to him... Then again, something about this crying made his gut tighten.
He sighed, and finally walked out of the aisle.
"Morgaine...?" He asked, barely believing his eyes.
But there she was - his best friend, absolutely broken down, sobbing on the library floor.
"Morgaine! What happened? Did someone hurt you?!" He fell to the floor and reached to push her hair from her face. He could feel his blood rush in his vains. When he gets his hands on whoever hurt her... "Morgaine, who did this to you? Just tell me and I'll take care of it..." His voice trailed off when his gaze fell on the book she was clutching in her arms.
He knew this book. It was his book. His book of dark spells.
"Please, tell me why." Morgaine finally looked up at him. Her eyes were red and her teeth clenched and when he met her gaze, it was as if a sharp claw clenched on his heart. But it wasn't pain that showed on his face.
He immediately drew back and turned away. He felt himself scowl.
"I should've seen it coming," his voice sounded so sharp, it made Morgaine flinch. "Of course you'd side with them."
Morgaine stared at him.
"What side? What- Gramorr what are you even talking about?! Please just-" her voice broke. "Just tell me what's going on? What's wrong? You know I won't tell anyone, we can just get rid of this thing and no one..."
"No!" Gramorr practically roared and ripped the book out of her hands, with a strength he wouldn't even suspect himself of.
Morgaine fell back and for a moment they both stared at each other with wide eyes.
Gramorr hugged the book closer to himself and his brows fell over his eyes in a look of resentment. He found his book and didn't even think of coming with it to him. First she evades him for months and now she tries to play the good friend again and treat him as some kind of traitor? He was right, she wouldn't understand.
The pang in his chest once again disappeared under his anger.
"That's right, you won't tell anyone," his voice was quiet, but it was overflowing with hatred. "You will just forget that you ever saw this book. We'll just go our separate ways and you'll leave me alone."
"Gramorr..." Morgaine started, but he cut her off.
"I don't want to even see you again! Just disappear like you do best - I'm sure the king and queen need you more than I do." He took a deep breath and his face once again fell into an unfeeling mask.
"Goodbye, Morgaine." He turned around and walked away.
"Gramorr... Gramorr!" She was yelling after him.
He pushed the book closer to his chest, and slammed the door behind himself to cut off her voice.
Oh Gramorr is going Through It™ I hope I managed to convey that he's being corrupted by some evil influence that makes him misinterpret every slightly unpleasant thing that happens to him as a direct and intentional attack (the amount of headcanons I had to put here. What even is canon of this show anymore.)
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it!

I was listening to LB again while I’m working on my cross stitch (like you do lol) & I heard a thing that hadn’t registered before: the Morgaines were Merlins before the splinter, so they are cambions too. The thing that differentiates them isn’t their heritage, it’s that they don’t administer oaths. Like. Nick just says that & then the conversation moves on.
Um. I need to know more about this, hello! So there’s this whole Line of cambions out there who live without oaths to bind them to their humanity & that’s just like a known thing? Mine them for information y’all! Since the other Legendborn presumably know how to contact them at this point! Maybe there are other Merlins besides Sel who are tired of the Order owning their asses in perpetuity! Gah! 👀
So excited to see how the Order crumbles in book 3!!!

haven’t been able to stop thinking about the morgaines since uh. ever. so now that i’ve read bloodmarked i’m wondering like. what are they. because i don’t think they’re cambions. for one, their magic shows up differently, and we know each magical practice shows up differently. morgaine also doesn’t have yellow eyes — she has green eyes, and it seems her descendants do too. in the bloodwalk (which i’m saying is based off a loose interpretation of a memory, like arthur idealized it), morgaine says merlin told her not to trust demonkind. not that she knows better than to trust demonkind. she also seems willing to use their power. which makes me think she’s not a cambion.
in arthurian legend, morgaine is a faerie. which would probably be a sub-class of demons in this world. which would explain why her descendants have her magic, but also it just makes sense to me.
it also makes sense that faeries would be exiled from the order. merlin was more respected. so his descendants would be too. having one line of trickster demons is fine when they can be controlled, but two? that’s different.
nick said merlins were oathed differently after the line of morgaine split off. and yeah, they would be, if they only had one demon species to oath now.

Cyldrea was thoughtful. Lowering her cup, she said, “You would train me as you and Morgaine were trained.”
Gwynhyfar nodded.
“It is likely that you will be even more effective at evocative magicks than Morgaine and I are, but that need not be your only talent. A wise witch knows when to ward, and when to strike; when to heal and when to wound. And both Morgaine and I are of the opinion that you could become a truly great witch.”
Cyldrea smiled at that. “I would be honored to learn as you did,” said the sylph.
“I am gladdened to hear it,” said Gwynhyfar.
“Gwynhyfar,” said Cyldrea a little shyly.
“Speak your mind, Cyldrea. I would never want you to do otherwise.”
Cyldrea smiled again. “Morgaine says that you are a great blacksmith and warrior.”
Gwynhyfar laughed. “Morgaine perhaps does me too big an honor with such a description. There were blacksmiths in old Camelot that knew far more than I, for their wisdom came from a deeper kind of knowing than I myself have yet to master. But yes, I have studied both the hammer and the sword for a great fall of years.”
“Would you teach me?” asked Cyldrea.
The witch looked surprised. “I would, but tell me why you want to learn.”
“You said that you would have me learn other things besides to tap into magick,” said Cyldrea.
“Yes.”
“And yet these skills may compliment each other, too, may they not?”
“Yes,” said Gwynhyfar. “In time, you may even learn to blend magick and sword as I have.”
“You told me that I could become a great battlemage,” said Cyldrea. “I think...I want that.”
Gwynhyfar was silent a moment. Cyldrea waited.
“I realize this may sound pedantic to you, but I would have you hear me nonetheless,” said Gwynhyfar.
Cyldrea nodded.
“I meant what I said. You could become such, and I am of course entirely willing to teach you such skills. But you must understand, child, that if you study the arts of the sword and smith, so too you must ponder, always, what it means to take a life as well as what it means to spare one. While this is true of magick, of course, magick takes far more focus than a fool with a knife, and deadly magicks cannot be wielded as often as can a blade.”
“I do not want to kill except at greatest need,” said Cyldrea.
“Under what circumstances would you do so?” asked Gwynhyfar.
“In defense of myself or another, and only then if I could not subdue my foe,” said Cyldrea. “I want to learn these things not to have power of life and death, but to defend the helpless. And for the moment, that includes myself. I never want to be at the mercy of someone like Harfina ever again, nor do I want to see those I love suffer the same.”
“It is well,” said Gwynhyfar. “I see you have given this a lot of thought.”
“I have,” said Cyldrea. “Morgaine told me that one of the most important parts of being a witch is to know yourself. I wanted to really understand why I wanted this.”
“Good,” said Gwynhyfar. “I will teach you all I can.” -from "Bloodlines," Tales of the Hidden Keys by @museofpvd

Okay this is my first time doing this so bare with me.
So the db decides to let their followers stay with them at their house before going on the road again, but they soon decide their is not a lot of rooms for them. So the group decides to pull straws to see which roommate everyone is going to get. How would each Follower react to getting DB as they're partner.
You can add whoever you want. But I would personally like to see Nebarra and Auri if that's alright.
Thanks and Hope your having a great day.
Hi! Thank you so much for requesting!
I hope you have an amazing day too.
_________________________________________
Some followers react to being DB's sleeping buddy
Nebarra:
-very chill about it, he's had sleep in worse condition then this and the DB is more tolerable then the others.
-since their is only one bed he ends up sleeping on the floor. He doesn't like people touching him
-wakes up stiff and a bit grumpy, the floor was definitely not comfy
Romance-able Nebarra:
-looks very calm but in the inside he's freaking out! My headcanon is this has probably the first person he has an form of romantic attachment.
-asks the DB if they want him to sleep on the floor, mainly it was more him. He low-key sees this as a disease and think that nothing happens it all just go away
-keeps his arms crossed and sleeps very stiffly, trying not to touch DB. He doesn't like people touching him in general but this goes as double because he gets a tiny joint whenever DB touches them.
Auri:
-very calm, this is something she okay with plus she likes the DB. They respect her and her boundaries and she very thankful of them
-but kindly says that she would like to sleep outside. She still follows the Green pact and frankly just walking into the house was making her physically sick.
-either sleeps in a tree or finds a way onto the roof. She only sleeps on the roof if the DB begs her.
-wakes up feeling refreshed.
Romance-able Auri:
-very happy, she and DB had been flirting for sometime and she figure it was high time that she made the first move
-flirts and teases the DB. It
-asks if they want to sleep on the roof with her. The light from the stars set the mood and she makes the move
-snuggles into them, the night is cold and she uses that to get closer
Morgaine:
-does it begrudgingly, she prefers having her own space, Most of her adult life she has slept alone and she prefers it that way.
-she also has terrible nightmares caused from the drugs. She shivers and wails around hitting the DB.
-was probably forced to as all the other follower find her creepy which she understands but can be pretty hurt at times
-probably steals the sheets, she gets terribly cold and has the sugar shakes
Romance-able Morgaine:
-also very happy and a little flustered, like main others she hadn't a life were love was something she could think of. In her mind the DB is her one and only shot if she played her cards right of course
- she snuggles close to them, citing her sugar shakes as the problem and asks the DB if they can cuddle
-as the DB hugs them she couldn't help but let a few tears slip
-it was probably her best sleep in centuries
Bruce Hammar:
-does it begrudgingly and very dismissive, he doesn't really care about anything
-also was probably forced as the other followers think he's an asshole, in fact he has almost gotten into a fight with severall of the follower before.
-ends up pushing the DB out of the bed by accident, he is a very very very big boy and he probably pushed them off by accident.
Romance-able Bhruce Hammar:
- love isn't anything new to him had many flings and loves come and in his very long life
-so he doesn't think much of it when he and the DB sleep in the same bed
-but in the back if his mind he he thinks longingly of a past time. One where he shared his bed once with a human and he can't help but feel nostalgic
-he pulls them on to his front, not in a sexual way but as a kind gesture
-he sleeps better tonight for some reason
Hi guys if you guys would like to request for a part 2 of any headcanons that I have already written please don't hesitate to ask! I love writing for you guys.
Have a great day!
