Forrest Gump (1994); AFI #76
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next film that was reviewed for the AFI top 100 was perhaps the most Americana movie of them all, Forrest Gump (1994). This is the story of a relatively simple man who truly experiences life by doing what people tell him he should do. The film won at the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing. Tom Hanks won his second consecutive Best Actor role after winning for Philadelphia the previous year, and this really put his stamp down as an A-List talent with huge box office draw. Robert Zemeckis was finally recognized by the Academy for the consistently good work he had done in the 80s and 90s for films like Romancing the Stone (1984), Back to the Future (1985), and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). The story of Forrest Gump is quite the journey (quite literally), so I want to go through it before pointing out some behind the scenes aspects of the film. This, of course, means that wonderful part of all of my reviews:
SPOILER WARNING!!! THIS IS A GREAT STORY AND THERE ARE DEFINITELY SOME ASPECTS TO SPOIL, SO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE MOVIE BEFORE READING ANY FURTHER! IT IS WORTH SEEING WITHOUT KNOWING THE ENDING!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1981, at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia, a man named Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) recounts his life story to strangers who sit next to him on a bench. He makes the very famous statement that really frames the entire film: "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna' get."
In 1956, in Greenbow, Alabama, young Forrest is fitted with leg braces to correct a curved spine since he is unable to walk properly. Forrest is named after the founder of the Klu Klux Klan as a reminder what foolish things people do. His father ran away (his mom calls it being on vacation), so he lives alone with his mother (Sally Fields), who runs a boarding house. Forrest has an IQ of 80, which should keep him from the public school, but his mother works out a deal with the principal. Mrs. Gump is very shrewd and is able to attract a lot of interesting characters to their home including a young Elvis Presley, who plays the guitar for Forrest and incorporates Forrest's jerky dance movements into his performances. Being able to attend school, Forrest takes the bus and meets a girl named Jenny Curran, and the two become best friends.
Forrest is often bullied because of his physical disability and low intelligence. One of those things suddenly changes because, while fleeing from several bullies (Run, Forrest, run!), his leg braces break off, revealing Forrest to be very fast. Forrest and Jenny (Robin Wright Penn) remain best friends through to college age, and the bullies continue to chase him. During one particular escape, Forrest is discovered by University of Alabama coach Bear Bryant. This talent for running gets Forrest a football scholarship and a college education. At his time at the college, he is coached by Bear Bryant, witnesses Governor George Wallace's Stand in the Schoolhouse Door (during which he returns a dropped book to Vivian Malone Jones), becomes a top kick returner, is named to the All-American team, and meets President John F. Kennedy at the White House.
After graduating college in 1967, Forrest enlists into the U.S. Army. During basic training, he befriends a fellow soldier named Benjamin Buford Blue (nicknamed "Bubba" and played by Mykelti Williamson), who convinces Forrest to go into the shrimping business with him after their service. Later that year, they are sent to Vietnam, serving with the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta region under Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise). After months of routine operations, their platoon is ambushed while on patrol, and Bubba is killed in action. Forrest saves several wounded platoonmates – including Lieutenant Dan, who loses both his legs – and is awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
At the famous anti-war March on the Pentagon rally, Forrest briefly reunites with Jenny, who has become a drug addicted hippie and anti-war activist. He is kicked out of a Black Panther meeting when he defends Jenny from an abusive boyfriend. He also develops a talent for ping-pong and becomes a sports celebrity as he competes against Chinese teams in ping-pong diplomacy, earning him an interview alongside John Lennon on The Dick Cavett Show, influencing the song "Imagine". He spends the 1972 New Year's Eve in New York City with Lieutenant Dan, who has become an alcoholic, embittered about his disability and the government's apathy towards Vietnam vets. Forrest's ping-pong success eventually leads to a meeting with President Richard Nixon, whose administration get him a room in the Watergate complex, where he unwittingly exposes the Watergate scandal.
Discharged from the army, Forrest returns to Greenbow and endorses a company that makes ping-pong paddles. He uses the earnings to buy a shrimping boat in Bayou La Batre, fulfilling his promise to Bubba. Lieutenant Dan joins Forrest in 1974, and they initially have little success. After their boat becomes the only one to survive Hurricane Carmen, they pull in huge amounts of shrimp and create the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, after which Lieutenant Dan finally thanks Forrest for saving his life. Lieutenant Dan invests into what Forrest thinks is "some kind of fruit company" (MacIntosh) and the two become millionaires. Forrest also gives half of his earnings to Bubba's family for inspiring the venture. Forrest then returns home to his mother and takes care of her as she dies of cancer.
In 1976, Jenny – in the midst of recovering from years of drugs and abuse – returns to visit Forrest. He starts to realize how angry she is with her life and father, so he of course decides to propose to her. She says no because she will only hurt him, but that night she tells Forrest she loves him and the two make love, but she leaves the next morning. Heartbroken, Forrest goes running "for no particular reason", and spends the next three years on a relentless cross-country marathon, becoming famous again before returning to Greenbow. This so beautiful because Forrest is so lost without Jenny or his momma, so he falls back on the only thing that he really knows how to do.
In 1981, Forrest reveals that he is waiting at the bus stop because he received a letter from Jenny, who asked him to visit her. Forrest is finally reunited with Jenny, who introduces him to their son, Forrest Gump Junior. Jenny tells Forrest she is sick with an "unknown virus" and the three move back to Greenbow. Jenny and Forrest finally marry, but she dies a year later. The film ends with Forrest seeing his son off on his first day of school.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This film has a lot of greats, but also a couple of bads. The story is very engaging and turns into the most nostalgic American history lesson of all time. Tom Hanks plays a constant fish-out-of-water character, because Forrest has intelligence levels, which lead to a constant need for explanation. It is a fantastically filmable concept and Zemeckis takes full advantage of it.
Speaking of filming, the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. The different shots that replay those historical moments (the integration at the University of Alabama, the Mekong Delta during the war, the protest at Washington DC), the beauty of the American roads, the Bayou when they are shrimping, and the giant Gump property are all beautiful. They also did a pretty good job of editing Forrest into stock footage as far as the body goes. It was groundbreaking at the time, but it can be done in After Effect by Youtubers at this point. What was not impressive and obviously does not hold up is the face tracking. Specifically bad are the presidents and John Lennon when they altered the mouths on historical footage to try and make them say different things. It is terrible. It does not break the movie, but it is both noticeable and laughable, especially since the film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
The score written for the film is simple and elegant, really adding to the mood and the tone. The songs can be somber and a little sad, but there is this child-like simplicity that is constantly hopeful and moving forward. Very much like Forrest Gump. The rest of the soundtrack follows the popular rock anthems of the time and the whole thing is a pleasure to listen to. I used to just let it play when I was trying (with moderate success) to do my calculus homework in high school.
The statements that Forrest Gump makes throughout the film carry more and more weight as we realize that he is saying these things from his own experience and not just because somebody told him. The phrase "I am not a smart man, but I know what love is" is so powerful coming from Forrest. He says this after Jenny turns him down for marriage, and it becomes apparent that his loss of Bubba and his mother taught him what caring for somebody really means. He might not be able to give a psychological definition of love, but he has experienced it. Beautifully written and emotionally delivered.
One other thing that might be good or bad, depending on how you see it, is that the movie is blatantly sentimental. It tugs at the heart strings, but it is really trying to do it. Bubba dies, Lieutenant Dan loses his legs, Jenny is constantly in trouble, Mrs. Gump dies...all of these things have the same downward shots with somber music. These scenes are all followed up with forward movie scenes and uplifting music. The film constantly pulls the audience all over the place, which makes the tone go all over the place. Knowing that this was Robert Zemeckis directing, it makes me think that this was purposeful. Forrest Gump had a very difficult time knowing what was going on, so he depended on the context and what people said to tell him how he should feel. The audience truly experienced what it was like to be Forrest, and we all went on a life journey with him
One thing that I saw when browsing through interviews was that the unknown virus that Jenny died of was not AIDS. It was supposed to be Hepatitis, according to the director, the author of the source material, and the screen writer. AIDS was just the major disease on the global mind at the time, but it wasn't that common in the early 80s. It was hard to tell because most deaths close to Forrest were not shown at the point of passing. Forrest doesn't want to talk about those moments, and he is the real narrator.
Does this movie belong on the AFI top 100? Of course. This is the most Americana film I know of, and it showcases a simple view of two decades of the American experience. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah! This movie is a whole lot of fun and a really easy watch. There are some technical flaws, but the story and acting are superior to just about anything else I have seen.

Twenty years ago writer-director M. Night Shyamalan was still one of the must-watch Hollywood talents around, and he had just released what I consider to be his VERY BEST WORK (sorry, The Sixth Sense, I just love this one more).  It’s his most intelligent work, a thoroughly ingenious deconstruction of the classic tropes of superhero culture just around the time when the genre was starting to gain traction in cinema, as well as creating a whole rip-roaring universe all its own.  Here’s to two decades of this sheer, unadulterated magnificence.
WARNING!!  Potential spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen it ...

hi we were talking about books yesterday and i was wondering if you have any good fiction recommendations? 😇😇😇
Yes, I have so many! I broke them down into relative categories, so there’s a little mix of everything. Please read the actual synopsis before diving in though, as some have major trigger warnings.
Books considered “classics”
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston: a book which I come back to in hard times of my life. There’s something so…necessary about this story. Prose style was great. I would rec this book to every person I know.
Mrs. Dalloway by Virgina Woolf: I read this when my life seemed to be changing faster than I could keep up. Beautifully written. Came at a time when I needed it.
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys: written as a prequel to Jane Eyre and a modernist masterpiece honestly. THE original meditation on the ideal of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl
The Color Purple by Alice Walker: you’ve probably heard this name from the adaptation. Let me tell you. This book deserves all of its acclaim. I think I’m gonna re-read soon.
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austin: this is super mainstream for The Literary Circles but it’s for good reason, this book is just? Fun? An honestly enjoyable read? plus when I was taking my SATs way back when they had an essay section, I could use this book for literally any prompt they gave
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë: this book is wild. Everyone is a messy bitch who lives for drama & I love it. I just finished it and omg
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath: my emo teen- girl rebelling ass ate this shit up back in high school. Is this book overrated? I don’t care. I love it for nostalgic value anyways
The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood: startling beautiful lines. I have almost half this book underlined. A popular read in recent times, with good reason.
A picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde: I fundamentally disagree with everything written in this book. That is exactly the point. About being gay & sinning. I would not recommend this as a ‘light’ read though. Easy to get swept up in Wilde’s sharp wit & not catch the intentional malice behind what he says, underneath.
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez: I just. Love this. That’s all I have to say. Yeah.gif
All The King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren: The nihilism of Oscar Wilde but set to a political backdrop in the 30’s with stylistic prose akin what you’d read from Hemingway. Probably not for everyone’s taste. But right up my alley in terms of political intrigue. If ur a stuffy English Major with who likes books about corruption, you’ll like this.
Popularized books that are worth the hype they had:
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls: there’s something so…engaging about the way this is written. It’s pretty much about kids who have to act like adults for their shitty parents. I couldn’t put this down though.
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn: as with all her novels, this gets dark. This gets ugly. An absolute thriller, & I can’t recommend her books enough. (You might know her from Gone Girl & Sharp Objects. This story follows similar tone). Honestly I rec anything by Flynn.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman: you’ve probably heard of or seen this movie. Well guess what? the book is even better.
YOU by Caroline Kepnes: aka the adapted Netflix series where dan from gossip girl plays plays joe, who is basically Dan but Unhinged. But like, the books are great. “Hidden Bodies” which is the sequel to this is even better, in my opinion. Just plz don’t romance Joe cus you saw penn badgley in a Netflix poster & were thirsty 4 him
Lesser Known/underrated books which could use your love:
A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley: A reimagining of King Lear, set on an Iowa farm in the late 1970s. Powerful and disturbing
The Gold Bug Variations by Richard Powers: specifically for classical music lovers. Basically a long meditation on supernal mysteries of music, specifically Bach’s intricate Goldberg Variations (you’ll wanna have the Glenn Gould recording to hand), & those of the DNA molecule (especially as a code to be broken) It gradually dawns on you that the two couples listening to the music and studying the molecule are themselves engaged in something strangely molecular and musical. You won’t always understand this book, but it keeps taking your breath away.
Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn: did I buy this book solely because of this tumblr post? Yeah. But it was easily one of the best decisions I’ve made. The way he manipulates letter-language is wild. Woah. Highly recommended.
The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window & Disappeared by Jonas Johnson: a 100 year old dude escapes his nursery home a steals a suitcase full of drug money then goes on a giant crime spree. HIGHLY entertaining. We stan a King
The Sellout by Paul Beatty: probably the greatest satirical comedy written within the last 50 years. I said what I said.
Children’s/teen/YA books you should absolutely read
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster: wonderfully creative, beautifully told. Takes abstract constructs and turns them into concrete beings and landscapes in amazing, engaging ways. Please read this. One of my all-time favorite books. Takes the protagonist, Milo, on a fantastical adventure borne through boredom on what he though would be another average day. Seriously. I love this book. So much.
Coraline by Neil Gaiman: another beautifully creative foray into a parallel universe where something Not Quite Right lurks beneath a pretty surface. If you’ve seen the movie adaption - great. Still read the book. It’s absolutely worth it.
Love that Dog by Sharon Creech: technically free verse poetry from the perspective of a young boy dealing with the loss of his pet dog who has to write poetry for a class assignment from his teacher. This is…so good. Oh my god. Oh my god? Poetry for non-poetry people.
The Giver by Louis Lowery: Listen. I know you were forced 2 read this in primary English. I know you probably hated it on principle. But this shit was all that kept me going, when I was younger. It made me feel so understood, before I could define trauma or the meaning of depression. This book made me feel seen.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky: ya know what? Fuck 2013 tumblr for dumbing this book down into a basic ass Grunge Anthem. I have never seen a book so adequately grapple with how awful romanticizing trauma can be. This book goes into the horrible side of adolescence in a way that’s genuine, and in a way which doesn’t put trauma/mental illness on a pedestal. I needed that shit, when I read it. I still love this book today. The lines will stay with you forever, after you read some of them.
All the Bright Places, by Jennifer Niven: this was another one of those books that I read in an essential time, which lodged into me afterwards. About two teenagers who meet while standing on the bell tower of their school, both contemplating suicide. Highly recommend. Prepare to cry.
You didn’t ask for Poetry but I’m including some because I am poetry TRASH:
Rice by Nikky Finney
A Thousand Mornings by Mary Oliver
One Big Self by C.D. Wright
LOOK by Solmaz Sharif
Poetry for people who think poetry is inaccessible to them:
New American Best Friend by Olivia Gatwood
Our Numbered Days by Neil Hillborn
Depression & Other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim
There are literally SO SO SO many books I could also add, but these are the ones that came to mind. Bolded ones are those I especially love. Happy reading!

pet shop boys share their favourite things interview
‘Lowe says nothing, just carries on eating his chocolate bar. He has the benign look of a dog who's just had his dinner. I begin. “Okay, well, this Favourite Things piece is just a bit of fun,” I say. There is a short pause.
“We don’t really do fun, we do ranting,” deadpans Tennant. Lowe chirps up: “Neil's only done two rants today.” And Tennant bats the ball straight back: “I’ve done being gay and politics...”
This, then, is the essence of their double act: one serves, the other returns. Let the games begin.’
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD TOY? Neil: Train set. Actually it was my cousin’s train set, it was passed down to us. It was on a green board. Potter’s Bar station. Even now when I get the train to my house in Durham and I go through Potter’s Bar I think of it. It didn’t even occur to me it was a real place until I moved to London.  Chris: I had, it was like a Scalextric but it wasn’t. I think it was called Minitrix, but it was made by Hornby and the two were linked together. My brother had a train set so you could have a level crossing and you’d have to stop the car to let the train go past. It was fantastic.  Neil: The train going round the villages and little plastic cows… I would have fantasies about where it was. I still would now. I have a very strong fantasy life, which is probably why I do what I do. I could look at this coffee table and imagine it was a country.
SUBJECT AT SCHOOL Neil: History. Still my favourite subject. My history teacher, Frank Keegan, [goes into hysterics] used to be known as Underpants Frank because he wore big Y-fronts and he tucked his shirt into them. He was actually ahead of his time … underwear above his trousers in the 1960s.  Chris: [A little nonplussed] That is weird. I didn’t have a favourite subject. I was a bit of a swot but school was just a means to an end, so I could get to university to do architecture.
WAY TO WASTE TIME Chris: Well, I spend a lot of time comatose in front of the telly…  Neil: Going through my iTunes finding artwork for tracks I haven’t got artwork for.  Chris: …I’ll spend hours flicking through the hundred-and-odd channels on Sky. Just going round and round and round. I really like doing nothing. Literally nothing.  Neil: What do you mean, literally nothing?  Chris: Watching the television. Flicking.  Neil: Chris has always liked watching television. I was reading this book about John Lennon and I’m thinking, “Who does this remind me of…?” Chris! John Lennon is just at home all the time watching the television and sleeping!
PLACE IN THE WORLD Chris: I’m very happy in a very nice hotel room. Anywhere.
Neil: You’re probably in your bathrobe.  Chris: Luxuriating in the bathroom, with all the products. You switch your phone off. No one knows where you are. You’re lying on fantastic Frette bedding… Maybe you’re in Miami, or something like that.  Neil: And you’re filling out the card for breakfast. [Laughs] I only learnt to drive last year. I passed my test on the first attempt. There’s this big moor close to where I live near Durham, where I love driving. I have my dog in the back of the car. He’s a Lakeland terrier called Kevin. So, Kevin’s looking out of the back and he’s hoping he’s going to get a walk. And I might stop the car and just smell the air, which is really peaty and fresh…
TIME OF DAY
Neil: Breakfast. First thing in the morning the day is full of expectations.  Chris: Lunchtime.
TIME OF YEAR Chris: Spring, because you can sense the season’s change and you think, “Great, we’re back” and you feel “Weh-hey” and you can see all the buds and leaves growing.  Neil: Mine’s ruled by hay fever. I had a hay fever injection this morning. I’m allergic to trees. The beginning of summer; although it’s all a bit sad because you think it’s going to end. And at the end of autumn, I love walking home at half-past-four and everyone’s got their lights on and they haven’t shut their curtains yet. It’s cold but you’re going to have a nice cup of tea when you get in.
ANIMAL Chris: Dog. I love dogs. I just find their faces so funny, they crack me up. They always look so happy when you’re all in the room together, it’s like “Ah, we’re all here.”  Neil: Mine’s a dog as well. But I like guinea fowl.  Chris: Because you can eat them?  Neil: I had a load in my garden. The only thing is they make a bit of a mess, they shit everywhere, and they make a lot of noise. They’re not that favourite actually. But they look so funny because they have tiny little heads and these great big bodies. And they walk right round the garden, round the perimeter, and it takes them all day. They look like dowager duchesses.
FLOWER Chris: Well, the other day I bought a load of tulips.  Neil: Tulips! That’s mine. That’s my answer.  Chris: They’re such gorgeous colours. They are like a pink.  Neil: I will buy, like, just white ones, and I like them crammed in one vase. I like arts and crafts furniture and the tulip is often a symbol in them because it’s a very beautiful shape.
COLOUR  Neil: I don’t have a favourite colour. But I always buy everything black.  Chris: I think the colour I would go for most would be blue.  Neil: Blue for a boy.  Chris: Although I do like wearing outrageous colours as well. Like cerise.
SMELL Neil: I think I am one of those people that likes the smell of wet grass in the morning.  Chris: I used to love - I still like - the smell of the London Underground.  Neil: When I first came to London I used to get the Northern Line to Kentish Town and recently I got the Northern Line and I thought, “God, It smells exactly the same.” It smells different from the Circle Line. And the Victoria Line still has a slightly new smell; when I first came to London it had just opened.
HOUSE YOU’VE LIVED IN Neil: I had a house in Rye in Sussex for ten years and in some ways I regret selling it. I sometimes think about it, and mentally walk around it. My bedroom had a bay window and you could see the harbour.  Chris: I liked this bungalow that we all lived in when we were kids in Blackpool, and there was a big field opposite and a rose garden, and a bit round the back where we could play on this big tree.
POSITION TO SLEEP IN  Neil: I sleep on my right side.  Chris: I toss and turn a lot.
JOB BEFORE MUSIC Neil: Smash Hits. I was the Assistant Editor at Smash Hits in a great period of pop music, 82-85.  Chris: I went from being a student to this. But I always had summer jobs in Blackpool, and I think the most fun one was being a ride operator on the Pleasure Beach. It was a bit - what was that film?  Neil: That’ll Be The Day [1973 cult hit in which David Essex and Ringo Starr pick up girls on the dodgem cars].  Chris: It was all a bit like that [belly laugh].
FILM Chris: I can’t keep saying The Sound of Music. What else?  Neil: John Waters?  Chris: What are you going to say?  Neil: I always say The Servant. Although actually it tails off, the last half hour is not very good.  Chris: Actually, the last half hour of The Sound of Music’s not brilliant.  Neil: There’s a very strong argument for The Sound of Music finishing at the wedding.
MOVIESTAR Neil: I very much like Marlene Dietrich. I like that icy glamour. The thing about Marlene Dietrich is that she’s not really that good-looking. Truly glamorous people are not normally beautiful. Jackie Kennedy is not beautiful - she’s funny-looking.  Chris: I’d probably say James Dean.  Neil: [Aghast] Do you like his films?  Chris: That wasn’t the question. Didn’t say the films had to be any good.
DAYTIME SHOW Chris: I could run you through my viewing: I get up at nine o’clock to watch the papers being reviewed on The Wright Stuff, then I switch to This Morning. Then there is the joy of Loose Women. Then it’s Countdown, then maybe Neighbours and Home and Away.  Neil: It’s a whole day’s work.  Chris: I don’t like the cooking programmes, got no interest in them.  Neil: I’m afraid I simply don’t watch the television. I live in Chelsea in a late-Georgian house and my television is in the basement.  Chris: I’ve got a television in every room. [Laughs] I never want to be far from a telly.
THING YOU COOK YOURSELF  Neil: Well. It used to be the notorious Neil Tennant grim stir-fry, which is brown rice, broccoli and soy sauce. That’s it. Surprisingly tasty. It’s all about the soy sauce. However, I now cook roast chicken. But to be perfectly honest, in London, when you live near Jenny Lo’s Tea House, There’s no reason to cook for yourself. The only reason I don’t have it every day is that it’s the same guy who delivers it and I get embarrassed. I always give him a massive tip. It always costs £15 and I give him £20.  Chris: None of my dishes are favourite, or anything I like that much. They’re just functional, eating things. So maybe Penne Arrabbiata. I always cook the same things. I often get pre-prepared chicken pies from Marks & Spencer - they only take 30 minutes. I should really go the whole hog and get a microwave: dinner in six minutes.  Neil: You love your chicken pies.  Chris: Chicken pies. Chicken kievs. [Laughs] They do good breaded chicken. What I like is everything is ready to put in the pan, all washed and everything.
TIPPLE  Neil: Red wine. I only drink red wine and champagne. Very occasionally I drink beer in Germany because it’s very good. And if I was in Russia I might have a vodka.  Chris: I like all of them. Depending on the time of day. Sometimes there’s nothing better than an ice-cold beer, is there?
COMEDIAN  Chris: Steve Coogan. I was really honoured - I went to see him recently at the Hammersmith Apollo and he made a very cruel joke involving the Pet Shop Boys and I was thrilled.  Neil: Who’s Mr G, what’s his real name?  Chris: Oh. Chris Lilley.  Neil: Chris Lilley. Summer Heights High. My favourite character is - Chris: Ja’mie.  Neil: Ja’mie! [They both laugh]
COLLABORATION  Neil: Dusty, I think. I can’t believe it’s ten years since she died. And she’s now a genuine legend.  Chris: Yeah. Dusty. I’d agree with that.
ITEM OF CLOTHING  Chris: [Camping it up] Oh I never have anything to wear! I wear these Y3 trainers all the time because they are incredibly comfortable. If I like something I tend to wear it to death, until it has to be thrown out.  Neil: I have a pair of boots that I like. Which are not these. I actually don’t like these very much. [Sticks out his foot over the coffee table and inspects it] I’m wearing these Yamamoto Dr Martens and I think they’re too clumpy. I made a decision at lunch not to wear them again.  Chris: [Teasing] It’s good that they were really cheap then, isn’t it?  Neil: These were 230 quid.  Chris: [To me] Can you imagine? For a pair of Doc Martens!  Neil: I’m going to take them to Durham and use them for walking in… Um. I’ve got a pair of Patrick Cox - when Patrick Cox was still Patrick Cox - boots that I wear all the time. But I’ve stopped wearing them recently because they have become part of my official outfit. I wore them at the BRITs, with that Gareth Pugh coat. I was wearing the Patrick Cox boots with the trousers tucked in and the stylist said it looked great so suddenly they went, “Hello, I’m now part of the Pet Shop Boys’ wardrobe, hands off me!”
SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST  Chris: Oh, That’s too big.  Neil: I can’t think of any songs at all now, of course.  Chris: Ain’t No Stopping Us Now by McFadden & Whitehead. That is my default position.  Neil: My default song is I Don’t Want To Hear It Anymore by Dusty Springfield.  Chris: [Jokes] Well, don’t listen to it then.
SONG Of YOURS  [Long silence]  Neil: It changes. I don’t think about it very much. We are writing this ballet. There’s a piece of music, the duet, but I can’t remember what we’ve called it. It’s Scene Six.  Chris: Last night I was going through iTunes and I listened to The Survivors by us, which I thought was really good.
SIN  Neil: They’ve all got something going for them… actually my least favourite is envy.  Chris: Envy, lust are bad ones, because going through life being lustful is just obscenity. Sloth’s pretty good. [Laughs]  Neil: You’re definitely more slothful, I’m more gluttony meets - what’s drunkenness called?
SAYING  Neil: You can’t make chicken soup out of chicken shit.  Chris: [Laughs] It’s Tom, our old producer [Tom Watkins was the Pet Shop Boys’ manager from 1985 to 89].  Neil: It’s completely stupid, it sums him up. We still say it though.  Chris: We just tend to repeat people that we know’s catchphrases. We had another manager and she used to say, “Well, you’ve had a good go.” [Laughs] Old Mitch [Mitch Clark, 1998-2003]. She was “Upwards and onwards as well”

Characters with Autism masterlist
n this masterlist you’ll find comic/movie/videogame/tv show characters that have Autism (not the actor but only the character they play). Like/Reblog if you thought it was useful.
Comics
Hikaru Azuma(With the Light: Raising an Autistic Child) [x] Sachiko and Masato's firstborn, and the main character of the series. His autism showed up one and a half years after his birth.  Hikaru hated to be picked up and held as a baby and did not grow in step with children his age, leading Sachiko to seek a doctor for him.  He always has been wearing diapers for a long time. He even stays in his stroller even when he's too old for it.  Hikaru dislikes loud and painful noises such as crowds, Buddhist chanting, and babies crying. He likes trains and memorizes many of them, including ones no longer running. Like many autistic people, when something is changed in his routine without any warning, such as a show switching times or being canceled, it upsets him. However, as the story continues, he and his parents figure out how to handle the situation. Since elementary school, he starts to show some unique talents, including cooking and mixing colors.
Black Manta(Aquaman)[x] An alternative version was given in #8 of the 2003 Aquaman series. In this origin, the boy who would become Black Manta was an autistic orphan placed in Gotham City's Arkham Asylum. He felt comfortable in freezing cold water, but found cotton sheets excruciatingly painful. Because the attendants at Arkham did not know how to deal with autism, they would end up restraining him to the bed as he struggled and screamed whenever they tried putting him to bed. In this version, young Black Manta was also fascinated when he saw Aquaman on television.
Johnny Do(Psi-Force)[x] Johnny Do is highly autistic and was treated as a virtual animal in a Russian project investigating paranormals.  Boyd was able to forge a connection with him and became his caregiver. "Johnny Do" is the name given to him by Boyd—his real name and background prior to his capture by the Soviet government are unknown; Dehman Doosha (Demon Within) is what his captors called him.
Mark Shiffron(Postal)[x] Hawkins based the lead character on his college roommate, a smart man with Aspergers whose behavior was mocked by other students. Silver where? Silver there!
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
So, that's where we put the silverware!
In April 1990, Wesley Ryder was retiring as Penn Yan village utilities manager after 37 years on the job. Apparently, as a retirement gift to himself, he wanted to know the contents of an old, unused village safe that was stored in his office closet in the village building at 4 Maiden Lane. Either he had never been curious about it before or finally decided to clean out his office as he prepared to retire.
What locksmith George Wright found in the safe – with Ryder and assistant Carl Stuck looking on – solved, at least in part, a 125-year-old mystery. In the safe, the three men discovered 61 silver spoons and a watch stolen from the home of Dr. William Oliver at the corner of Main and Chapel streets (now the Yates County History Center's Oliver House Museum).
According to an April 4, 1990 article in the Finger Lakes Times, the three men discovered a cardboard box containing 25 small souvenir spoons wrapped in pink cloth, 36 silver spoons, a beaded necklace, and a key-wound Swiss watch inscribed W. Oliver. Several of the silver spoons are engraved with Oliver family initials – Oliver, O, MJO, JPO – as well as other markings – PS, MJP, E. Jones.
The article states the souvenir spoons were collected by the Oliver family during their travels around Europe – Gibraltar, Pisa, Dublin, and Rome – though our director, Tricia Noel, asserts it was a later generation of the Oliver family that traveled around the world. Their well-known travels, of course, are part of the reason we named this blog Oliver's Travels, but that's another story for another day.
The Yates Scrapbook feature in the February 18, 1982 Chronicle-Express includes an article from then-Village Historian Catherine Spencer that reprints a June 18, 1919 article by Theodore Hamlin that recounts the 1865 double burglary at his family's home and the Oliver home. At the time, the Myron Hamlin residence was just a block away from the Dr. William Oliver residence in the modern-day parsonage of the United Methodist Church.
Unfortunately, as much as I appreciate Theodore Hamlin's detailed account, I have been unable to find a contemporary account of the burglaries in our digitized newspaper collection. The closest item I could find is an April 14, 1864 (so Hamlin was off by a year) item signed by Myron Hamlin and Dr. Oliver, a mea culpa of sorts. In a paragraph, the men acknowledge a Mr. W.D. Capron had been suspected of having knowledge of the “recently committed” burglary (so we can assume the incident took place in the prior weeks or months) but assert they believe he had nothing to do with the stolen silverware.
In Theodore Hamlin's account, the incident occurred “one dark and rainy Saturday night … before street lamps were in use to any extent.” Though “we” (and it isn't clear exactly who “we” is) had been sleeping at the Hamlin family store, “we” stayed at home that night because of two sick family members. The “we” lay down on the sofa “at the north end of the room” (the living room?), remaining clothed and removing only coat and boots. A dim light was left burning in the other end of the room, and a small revolver and a key to the store were in a pocket of the coat.
Around 1 a.m., Hamlin wrote, “we” woke up quietly and felt something was wrong, laying still and looking backward. The top of a man's head was seen as he stood in the doorway opening into the pantry, just at the head of the sofa. He was searching the coat, and when “we” sat up the burglar dropped the coat and quickly disappeared. “We” grabbed the coat, secured the revolver, and jumped through the door (an inside the door, presumably) after the burglar. An open window was discovered, and a revolver shot was taken out the window. “We” found all the silver gone and a kitchen door left open for a quick getaway.
At the Oliver home, according to Hamlin, the family spent the evening in the sitting room when they heard “an unusual slight noise” in the kitchen and laughed it off as nothing important. Later, it was supposed the burglar walked in and hid himself in a closet off the kitchen until the family went to sleep. Around midnight, Mrs. Oliver heard a faint rattle of silver in the pantry and sent her husband to take a look. He reached the kitchen just in time to see a man disappearing out the window and notice all the silver gone. A pocket knife stuck in the casing to hold up the lower sash was the only clue left behind.
Henry N. Wagener, the Yates County Sheriff at the time, stated the knife had a smell of fish and suspected it belonged to a “public character” who handled fish and had a bad reputation, but the sheriff could not prove the man owned the knife. Later, a “well-known citizen” walking through the street carried a hand bag that appeared to contain the stolen silver. However, when the sheriff tracked the man down and demanded to see the bag, he found only piano tuning equipment.
Until 1990, neither the silver nor the burglar was discovered. The only trace of evidence was one teaspoon found between the plank sidewalk and front fence of the D.W. Adams residence, presumably accidentally dropped by the burglar.
According to Spencer, the silverware may have been turned in to village police after the burglary when the police occupied what became Ryder's office. The police likely put the stolen goods in the safe but left it behind when the police station moved to Basin Street in the mid-1930s. In 1990, then-Police Chief Raymond Stewart photographed the silverware and stored it in a safe deposit box in the local Chase Lincoln First Bank branch office.
However, Stewart declined to further prosecute the crime 125 years after the fact, remarking to the Finger Lakes Times, “I would imagine the thief has met his maker somewhere.”

My Mischievous Son - Small Thoughts
Some how this show managed to make a 90's sitcom world work. Penn's reactions to the laugh track was funny. Mrs. Wright was a nice character. She felt like a genuine 90's sitcom Mom who you felt bad for disappointing. I like how they made Rippen look like a cross between Dennis the menace and Chucky. This was a plain good episode.
