At the start of thinking sketching and researching for my commission from @grangegormandev @tudublin , I worked through a lot of options. I’ve previously made kinetic work and the work that isn’t has generally had a sense of movement or change. I knew I wanted to make use of the multiple points of viewing and to find a way to highlight the changing light in the atrium of the building. So began the process of identifying the potential materials and methodology. I finished Tar Baby by Toni Morrison a few weeks ago and wanted to make my own cover illustration, because making art is how I process. This is ink, Gouache and watercolor on paper. It was an amazing and heart breaking book, and it took me way too long to get to. Written in 1982, it is just as relevant today as it was then (unfortunately things haven’t changed much.) Watch the YouTube video titled “Toni Morrison beautifully answers the illegitimate question on Race” from Jan 1998 on the Charlie Rose show. Over her career, Morrison constantly faced variations of the same question over and over: “Will you ever write a book for the white audience, a book that is not based on the black gaze?” This question, posed again and again is how institutional racism is perpetuated. To ask this question is white centering and in effect is to say to BIPOC artists: “Stay in your lane.” As I read fiction these days I’m doing my best to read mostly women of color because I need to hear multiple perspectives and step outside of my own white perspective. I’m not saying we need to cancel all white authors. It’s just that for me, at age 47 it’s safe to say I’ve spent a lifetime reading mostly white male authors. Say:"Hello, Who are you?" And we'll start from scratch again "Gotta go, Talk to you soon!" Day by day, I'm fading away "Why can't you be like your brother?!" I hear that phrase over and over since I was small. My family says it all the time. Why can't they see that I don't want to copy my twin. It's not right... but then again who cares about me.... Day by Day I'm fading away. We get along just fine I say everything you like to hear "It's funny how much I Feel like I'm looking in a mirror" All I care about is the one I love, my senpai. I get along with everyone just fine, fooling my ignorant classmates. It's funny, in order to seem like I have emotions I have to fake them... It feels like I'm looking in a mirror. I can't remember... Who I am... Everything's a blur... Take me over... I'm forced to be something I don't like to please my mother. I don't have my own identity and can't control my appearance. This is an image I come to again and again in my practice. The notion of multiple perspectives and perceptions is something I play with a great deal in my work. My commission from @grangegormandev @tudublin provided a perfect opportunity to push this even further. The space allocated for Solaris Nexum was an atrium that spanned five floors and allowed for multiple points of observation. These days things everything seems a wild panorama of colors. Talking about things as being black and white or even shades of gray now seems completely ridiculous. The plethora of perspectives and ways of seeing a thing has become so diverse, it’s increasingly difficult to anticipate how anyone will respond to anything. It strikes me that the moment that we are in is both profoundly free and profoundly tyrannical. One can say or do almost anything, but one also has to be prepared to deal with the consequences. Things which were socially acceptable a moment ago have suddenly become taboo and things which were once unacceptable are suddenly the norm. Also it seems to me the intensity of the response has really increased exponentially. This is a very interesting and dangerous time to begin to express my voice in a more public way.
