New haul of creek treasures!

On this plate of little gems we have a gorgeous red mineral-stained cow tooth, a deer tooth, squirrel tooth, a very old white teardrop-shaped bead or hat pin, the bed from an old metal toy pickup truck, a beautiful array of fossils including crinoids, brachiopods, bryozoans, and horn coral, a piece of what would have been a gorgeous little perfume bottle, lots of other pretty bits of vintage tumbled glass and pottery, and more!

everything is ads

i was just complaining about this on a discord i’m a member of. (discord is. sigh. what is it. well it’s not the public internet. it’s not a substitute for social media. but it’s something. the incalculable harm done to fannish community by having so much of the active discussion now silo’d in these private, unsearchable servers is hard to state, but it’s a necessary retreat given that all the platforms keep proving themselves to be garbage. A N Y W A Y i had a thing i was gonna say.)

You are interested in an art form, or hobby. so you look it up on the internet. you find a creator who does the thing you like, and you follow them, probably on instagram currently. Their instagram has frequent posts about their art, which is great. Sometimes you can learn some techniques from them. But then they want to sell you courses in how to learn it. Of course they need to monetize, but it’s a bit off-putting; you just want to do this for a hobby, and want to learn how, and to have to pay to take a course in it is sort of beyond your means for this kind of thing.

And then like... half the posts are unboxings.They bought art supplies, which they are going to review for you. Here’s a haul video, which isn’t really even a review so much as it is just showing off each of these products. As they put them away, you can see that their storage is stuffed full of more and more unused stuff from all the previous haul videos and unboxings. Where are they putting all this? When are they using it? How much money are they spending on it?? Yes there’s an affiliate code if you want to buy one too, there’s a discount if you use it. Help a creator out. Support a small business!

I’m happy to support small businesses and I do like supporting independent creators but uh like... that’s... you wind up so inured to this constant buying of new stuff, and yes you can get a lil dopamine hit from shopping but my god, no. No. It is not harmless and it is not innocuous, when you are being constantly bombarded with this normalization of constant consumption.

(I have a fraught relationship with buying things. My ADHD Or Whatever It Is really likes the shiny new, but I have been broke most of my life, and my inability to do math makes me alternately over-conservative and reckless with money. I have had years where I spent almost everything I earned on frivolous bullshit. i have had years where I spent nothing that wasn’t on food or gasoline, and wore clothes with holes in them that didn’t fit and just made do and just lived smaller and smaller. This is a constant, ongoing problem, and watching a creator I admire unbox her new purchases of random shit literally twice a week does not help me untangle it, and that’s just one of the people I follow, seriously how does this person have the money to just keep buying more stuff.)

I know that the underlying problem is capitalism, specifically the current hyperconcentrated strain of it we have that means that the middle class basically doesn’t exist. When I was growing up, an author could make a reasonable career in the mid-list, putting out a book every year or two and living off the advance on the next one while the previous one earned out, and after a couple decades you could retire on the residuals. But by the time I was old enough to pursue a career, that line of work was dead; now you’re either a superstar or you’re grinding out two or more novels a year to make poverty wages if you’re lucky, and doing all of your own marketing too on top of it. Every industry has gone that route; anything remotely creative, there’s now no outlet for except hustling as a Content Creator on the Internet. You gotta have a little Etsy or a shopify, you gotta have a Patreon and make that worthwhile somehow. instagram wants a reel every day, you gotta game that algorithm for exposure, teach yourself video marketing on top of whatever it is you actually like. You can’t just work your undemanding civil service job and make extremely detailed tutorial pages in your evenings and weekends because you don’t have evenings and weekends anymore and every hobby has to become a slave to the grind.

So I’m not mad at the creators, I’m not mad at the people forced to hustle. I’m just so tired. The solution has to be systemic; yelling at the content creators isn’t going to fix anything. We need higher wages, we need better labor protections-- I know that’s unsexy and not a good slogan for anything but believe me, that is the bottom line here.

IDK I don’t have a punchline. I guess I want to gently encourage y’all to practice non-consumption as self-care. Be aware of that side effect of constantly being bombarded with ads, where you just sort of absorb this feeling that it’s normal to constantly be buying things.

I’m not saying don’t click on your little indie creators’ ads. I’m just saying remember that everything is ads. [Just this week I bought deodorant from an Instagram ad because the girl selling it was hot, I am not immune. I know fine well what I did. Listen I needed more deodorant anyway and I don’t find very many people hot so it was notable.]

And, bringing it around to be immediately topical, when we say don’t interact with corporate accounts here on Tumblr, we mean corporate. Don’t hate the tiny hustlers. This is maybe the only platform where they can still have any kind of meaningful reach. All the others have realized that you can make businesses pay to not be hidden, and if they don’t ransom themselves, you can hide them from their friends and customers, but Tumblr hasn’t hit that yet. That’s the real origin of the Instafluencer-- the actual brands’ ability to market directly is limited, so they have to find people to shill for them.

You can block ads. But when your favorite creator is shilling, you can’t block that without losing the parts you like too. it’s so fucking insidious.

Added earrings to the Etsy store...

OK so look, I haven't made earrings for over a decade but I had a box of beads and jump rings and hooks and whatnot that's been sitting on the shelf for ages and I decided it was time to make them into pretty things that can make someone else feel happy and pretty and dainty and yay! The photos I've posted are so-so, so if you click the link below you might see better ones already posted. In any case, I design and made all of these by hand myself:

It was kind of cathartic to figure out what I wanted to do with each of these designs and then make them. I bought most of these beads in a store in Budapest that closed a few years ago. It was December 23rd, which I remember because I wanted to make sure I got the shopping trip in before the store closed between Christmas and New Year's. I wanted to make earrings during those slow, quiet days.

I went to see my grandfather on my way to the store, stopping at his place to say hello, and telling him I was running an errand and then would come back to have dinner with him. I would visit him every day when I was in town and was very fond of him. When I arrived back at his place, bead haul in tow, he was lying in bed unconscious and his caregiver was in a panic.

I won't get into the whole story, but the long and short of it is, because I went to buy these beads I got back at just the right time to sort out the situation (the caregiver was useless) and hold his hand as he passed away. Had I not gone to the bead store, my visit with him would have ended before his heart slowed and he started feeling tired and went to bed early. You hear stories sometimes of small choices people make that change their lives because of what they're around for and what they miss, and I've never quite gotten over how close I got to not having that final moment with someone I loved so much. It was a profound and personal moment I got to share with him (and am so glad for it, because my parents, who have their own baggage, chose to scatter his ashes without me out of carelessness).

Needless to say, I didn't have much opportunity to make earrings that week, let alone interest in doing so. I think I've been holding on to these beads for such a long time because of that night and the lack of closure, and turning them into something beautiful felt just a little bit transformative. It's nice to think they might go out into the world and fulfill their tiny purposes, and I'm not longer holding onto something that I'm finally ready to let go of.

So @iputhepinprincess suggested I do a little “birthday haul” post after my annual trip to Myrtle Beach, SC so I did just that lol! Here’s most of the stuff I bought!

Kerropi and My Melody Build-A-Bear plushies with outfits (they unfortunately were out of Kuromi and Pochacco plushies 😭 and there wasn’t really any new pokemon ones that I really wanted, there was a Sobble one that was really cute, but I already had like 4 plushies that needed to be stuffed and I didn’t want to overwhelm the employees with all my stuff lol)

I didn’t buy a Pom Pom Purin plush, but I did buy his little friend Muffin

A tuxedo cat I bought online and stuffed in store in honor of my kitty Nugget who sadly passed away last year a couple days before my birthday ❤️🐱 (also with a really cute Cinnamoroll onesie 💕, I also got my mom one based off of her own cat Binky who is still alive and well and very chunky lmao)

A Toki Doki x Sanrio figurine of Kerropi mixed with Sandy Diamante (and a cupcake lol) and a little surprise chocolate egg where I got a mini Kuromi figure

And a bunch of candy from the candy stores in the shopping center lol (the taffy box kinda got crushed in my mom’s backpack while she carried it lol)

I also bought a magnet of Odie from Garfield, one of those “clean/dirty” magnets for my dishwasher in a Spongebob design, an Ariel from The Little Mermaid steel Tervis tumblr cup (and the lady at the store gave me a free pink reusable straw for my birthday lol), a couple of green doughnut dog treats for my dogs, a crappy spider toy I bought for my cats that broke like immediately lmao (they still played with it though so it wasn’t a total waste lol), and I also bought a bottle of strawberry flavored ramune but I drank it while I walked around the shopping center lol

I also ended up buying some stuff online with my leftover money off EBay and Etsy, so I might show those too! But yeah lol, that’s my birthday haul!

I want to try out the techo even though I don’t do planning and I already bought something to be my log book (N2/weeks sized Sterling ink notebook)

So I’m getting the A6 avec, with the idea that it can be my mess book and/or a book in which I do a “one-a-day” of something or other (I used to do one grid paper cutting a day. I like having a small achievable creative task I do as a daily routine)

I wanted the Mother 2 Third Sanctuary cover because I loooove the aesthetic of photographs of 3D cartoony objects. In love. But it’s not versatile enough I think. So sad :((((

The idea is to get a Áne pouch, so I can fit both my N2 notebook (my day log) and an A6, with a pen and flat things. Someone on Reddit posted pics of how well a weeks + an A6 avec fit in there. I would get it in black for versatility, plus I don’t like the other options in this size. This would by my lite on-the-go setup

My journal and creative writing books are A5(moleskine version), and then B6 in the new year when I finish my journal. They live in my paper republic portfolio. I’m not opposed to carrying these with me, but would more likely stay at home unless I’m going on longer trips.

Getting a pencil board for A6 and a pencil board for weeks.

And getting a few A6 notebooks. I’m thinking two blank ones and one grid. If the avec goes well I won’t really have an immediate use for the grid one, but I want to know what it’s like and I’m already committing to paying 41$ shipping so, I’ll get it now.

The blank ones can be future mess books or for drawing. Again, just stocking up since I’m paying the shipping already and these retail for almost double the price elsewhere. Also I been looking at listings for other A6 TR paper notebooks sold on Etsy and they either have dots/grids or there’s 40$ shipping, so it makes sense to get those now.

Sad about the Mother cover, cause it’s so frogging cute. But it just makes more sense to get something that can pass as professional and that can simultaneously carry my day log and my mess book.

Today, I bought a vintage, black lace and silk camisole, a sheer, black, long sleeve blouse with little floral embroideries, and a new pair of black, high-waisted skinny jeans. All of the shops had sales running, so it was a fairly inexpensive haul. I also have my eye on a vintage, black leather jacket that I may be able to buy on sale once the seller tells me the size.

I’m hoping to find some earrings too; I’m getting my ears re-pierced for the third time. I fell in love with this pair of incredibly romantic Edwardian cameo earrings on Etsy but they’re beyond my budget. There’s a pair of Virgin Mary medallion/coin style earrings I’d love to have…next paycheck maybe. I also really want a pair of snake or dagger earrings.

Let’s hope it all fills the void for at least a couple weeks (it won’t.)

okkay just kidding here is my yarn haul. i spend less than 150 on all of this which is a huge point of pride for me.

pic 1: all wow by katia which i got in a mystery bag. i'm going to make a sweater vest out of it. i am going to hold the gray together with the yarn in pic 4 for some pop. its going to be kind fo color vomit idk where i would wear it other than work but i like the idea of something that will knit up fast and i also got all the yarn for cheap for what the yarn is actually "worth"

pic 2: trans wool for an entrelac trans cowl because i see etsy sellers making them and im like thats a great idea but i want to Make It. i've never done entrelac before oo

pic 3: this is for an intarsia cable project im gonna do just like a basic cables hat i was envisioning at first the contrast color would be black but now i'm thinking it'll be something like a cloudy sky blue maybe? much to consider. i jiust want intarsia cable lol it seems sooooo cool

pic 4: i won the yarn in a raffle and the notions box is too small for my scissors and my measuring tape

pic 5: only 2/5 of the yarn shops had actual roving for spinning everywhere else showed me roving for needle felting which i cannot spin. anyway it feels really soft and easy to work with unlike malabrigo's nube which i think contributed to a lot of pain i was having when i first started spinning. (i mean i was also spinning too much but the nube didn't help plus the yarn it made is not even that cute)

My latest gaming addiction - No Man’s Sky. Bought it on Steam in sales last week and after an initial “not sure if like or dislike” I’ve spent a disturbing number of hours running around and finding stuff and building mini-bases all over my starting solar system. This particular one is at the site of a crashed space freighter I’m salvaging stuff from (my only base so far in a second solar system is positioned at same). I have several sites I’ve named “Drydock” that were claimed just for the purpose of salvaging a wrecked ship and warping it to the space station to melt down for scrap (best haul so far netted me > 5 million units plus a storage upgrade for my own tiny ship). At some point when I have a lot more in the way of resources and technology, I might try actually repairing one of the crashed ships. Because why not.

I also like having bases handy to specific material types - like the one super-weird planet covered in coral-like desiccated creatures that are formed of both carbon and ferrite (two of the three main building materials, the other being silicate sand you can dig up anywhere), making it an awesome place to farm for more building materials any time I start running low. So much easier and faster than running around mining them from random plants and rocks on other planets, and I can just use my teleporter to step to there from any of my other bases if I need to gather more

So far if I had to describe my character I’d say they’re conflict-avoidant. Happy enough to just ignore the battles occurring around them, scavenge for salvageable crap, and build micro-bases. I am looking forward to unlocking more of the decor items so I can make bases that look comfortable, not just functional (I blame many years of playing The Sims for that interest...).

I’ve barely set foot outside my starting system yet, and don’t really have any interest so far in following the main storyline assignments or getting into any fights. I’ve only killed one pirate so far - mostly I just scram away from them as fast as my tiny ship can go - but I may beef up my weapons and shields a little, because being randomly attacked when I’m just minding my own business mining asteroids (for gold so I can build more solar panels) is getting old.

Been wanting this print from @theshitpostcalligrapher‘s Etsy shop for most of a year now; finally picked up a copy this month as a birthday present to myself.

I’ve put it in sight of my bed, so I’ll see it first and last thing every day, and some day (hopefully soonish) when I get my shit together enough to move out into my own place again, I will probably make a point of it being the first decorative item I set out.

(Also I love the pretty tiled frame I bought to put it in)
