#NCIS fic recs

I just recently returned to the tiva fandom and was wondering if you have any fic recs on ao3? saw your posts in the tag

I also recently returned to reading Tiva fics, so I don't have an exhaustive list (yet!) but can definitely give you a few ideas!

Previously, I used to read on fanfiction.net but have since switched over to AO3, so I'm discovering a whole new world of Tiva fics.

Assuming you're caught up on the show, including [SPOILER] Ziva returning in season 17, here's a few recs:

1. Literally anything by @benditlikepress (AO3 page here)

I've been reading through her page basically top to bottom, especially her post-season 17 fics.

These two especially stood out as painfully beautiful, which is what I have been in the mood for lately:

no man is an island (Cairo fic - also read the other two in the "fill in the blanks" series)

i think your house is haunted (past present future fic, this one is heartwrenching)

2. LittleSammy fics

Of Doors, Beds, and Relevancy (Tiva goes furniture shopping... completely platonically of course)

Fate's Design (more past present future between the scenes)

3. (Self promo) I also write Tiva fanfics, used to a lot more but I'm getting back into it now that I'm on AO3 and fully back in the fandom. I go by ContentsPriceless and while I wouldn't say I've got any masterpieces quite yet, here's a couple I really enjoyed:

Worth It (season 9 what if Tony swooped in to save the day when Ray stood Ziva up for their date)

I'm also writing a Tiva fic for every episode seasons 3 through 11.02. Only on season 3 right now and it's gonna be slow going, but I'm enjoying it so far!

I also recommend you check out @indestinatus (AO3), born33 (AO3), and probee (AO3), and I'm sure I'm missing many more, maybe I'll work on fic recs in the future that are more comprehensive! This is just what I've been reading lately!

Ha, I meant to answer this a few days ago, but... better late than never? 💜 this is very self-indulgent but hopefully without too much overlap from other things I've shared when I've gotten this ask (this was a hard choice, I have like 209 fics, somehow??)

ye who are weary, come home (M*A*S*H) - this is the most basic bitch answer, and also it's one of my 'favourites' in that I'm proud of the technical achievement and the story I was trying to tell... but it was also a major pain in my ass to actually write it. Ensemble pieces, I tell ya... First 4077 reunion, canon pairings, fun cameos, and triad buildup. What more can you ask for?

Butch & Sundance (The West Wing) - this one is cheating a lil bit, because it's not one fic, it's a fic series? The gist is that I accidentally predicted a major theme for CJ/Danny, and then I ran with it. But I love these fics sm.

shizukana yoi ni, hikario tomoshi (in the quiet of the night, let our candle always burn) (M*A*S*H) - THE most self-indulgent wacky fake dating AU that my bestie and I ever came up with. The quasi-spies, modern AU with all the fake dating, and also on the page ace rep. This fic <333

the love that you've looked for (M*A*S*H) - silly little self-indulgent AUs... in this case, one based on "escape (the pina colada song)" except poly :D

Cosmo's Symphony (Singin' in the Rain) - this is a short but sweet look at the mind of the REAlL star of the movie... Cosmo Brown. Idk I'm just soft about it.

And bonus, even though it's not done, it's peak self-indulgence...

You know when you remember a fic you read ages ago but you can't remember the title and only have a vague recollection of the plot and a certainty that you loved the fic?

I had one of those for NCIS and it had been popping up in my head since I decided to catch up on the last 10 or so seasons. I gave up hope of ever finding it again since I read it about 12 years ago.

But then I was in my FFN account today and decided to check out my review history. Turns out that long-lost fic was one of my last reviews before I fell away from fanfic for a few years and then switched to AO3.

I nearly jumped out of my chair when I found it.

I cannot BELIEVE I forgot this title because it's my favorite quote, and I had a WIP (not NCIS, and not the same subject matter) with this title that I lost when my Windows crashed.

Speaking of the subject matter, this story is about sexual assault against a male. It's not explicit, but it's also unquestionably what the fic is about and there's no scrolling past it if it makes you uncomfortable.

I went through a few chapters and remembered WHY I loved this fic. Too many rape/recovery stories are just, for want of a better term, torture porn. Or actual porn. Like you can tell the author wanted to write about the assault and the story is just there to serve that desire.

This time, the theme serves the story. The author set out to write a good story and the assault was a way to carry it out. Parts of it are very difficult to read, but I remember getting all the way to the end felt very satisfying, like finishing a marathon. Having run a few half marathons since then, I stand by that statement.

Anyway, that's my long-winded rec. This is one of the best fics I've ever read in any fandom and I'm gonna go back and read it in total one of these days.

Saw this on Twitter and was quite baffled by the idea of sorting by kudos in the first place. I’ve always just gone to the SG1 tag or the Sam/ Jack tag on AO3, which is automatically sorted by most recent, and didn’t even realise you could sort by kudos!

One thing that struck me was that multi-chapter fics probably get more kudos than one-shots simply because they’d be at the top of the ‘most recent’ list more often as they are updated, meaning more readers have a chance to see them. A one-shot doesn’t get that boost.

So, I’ve just sorted the S/J tag by kudos and the top ten fics are:

Crossover fic (SG1/ SGA, Teen Wolf, The Sentinel) - multi-chapter, 2,915 kudos, 63k hits

Crossover fic (NCIS, SG1/ SGA, The Sentinel) - multi-chapter, 1,844 kudos, 65k hits

SGA Rodney/ John fic - under 2k words and a fairly low-key relationship fic (from Sam’s POV), but it’s got 1,778 kudos and 17k hits.

SG1 Jack/ Sam fic (The Love That Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger by NiceHatGeorgia) - multi-chapter, 1,490 kudos , 37k hits

SGA/ SG1 invasion of earth-type fic - multi-chapter, 1,366 kudos, 42k hits

Crossover fic (SG1, Teen Wolf - same author as no. 1) - multi-chapter, 1,308 kudos, 8k hits

SG1 Jack/ Sam fic (Compulsion by Sharim28) - multi-chapter, 1,374 kudos, 33k hits

Crossover fic (The Sentinel, SGA, SG1, John Wick, Teen Wolf) - multi-chapter, 1,265 kudos, 49k hits, first WIP in the list

SG1 Jack/ Sam fic (Retrospective by Salr323) - one shot (of 18k words!), 1,219 kudos, 16k hit

SG1 Jack/ Sam fic (Full Disclosure by Salr323) - one shot (of 11k words!), 1.114 kudos, 14k hits

The next ten includes another Teen Wolf crossover (same author again), two sequel stories to no 5, a SGA/ Avengers crossover, four Sam/ Jack fics (three complete and one WIP), a SGA one-shot, and a SG1 one-shot (a quantum mirror/ OT4 story which is 66k words!).

I really was not expecting the top story to be a Teen Wolf crossover 😧 It was published in 2017, and I’d love to know why that particular story is such a big hit. Big Name Fan as author? A logical connection between Teen Wolf and SG1 that I’m not aware of? The writing (the crossovers and the author’s other SG1 fics) is good, and the author quite prolific, but it is still a surprising result.

I also looked at sorting by bookmarks, which similar to sorting by kudos (only one per story), and unsurprisingly the top twenty fics when sorted by comments are all multi-chapter.

I agree with the point that good fic in the early eras of a fandom might not be classed as good in the later years. I’ve found this in my trawl through the Gateworld S/J recs where stories that are recommended as being really great are not that well-written or in character to my eyes. I think some of that might be the change in tone - there are some early SG1 fics (dated during the show’s run) that seem to have a more light-hearted/ almost comedy tone, and I’m trying to think whether the early seasons do seem less serious than the later seasons as the stakes get higher/ the war with the Goa’uld seems less likely to be won. I’ve mused on this before and haven’t come up with an answer!
