What’s It Like to Work in NASA’s Mission Control Center?

In the latest installment of our First Woman graphic novel series, we see Commander Callie Rodriguez embark on the next phase of her trailblazing journey, as she leaves the Moon to take the helm at Mission Control.

Flight directors work in Mission Control to oversee operations of the International Space Station and Artemis missions to the Moon. They have a unique, overarching perspective focused on integration between all the systems that make a mission a success – flight directors have to learn a little about a lot.

Diane Dailey and Chloe Mehring were selected as flight directors in 2021. Diane Dailey started her career at NASA in 2006 in the space station Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) group. As an ECLSS flight controller, she logged more than 1,700 hours of console time, supported 10 space shuttle missions, and led the ECLSS team. She transitioned to the Integration and System Engineering (ISE) group, where she was the lead flight controller for the 10th and 21st Commercial Resupply Services missions for SpaceX. In addition, she was the ISE lead for NASA’s SpaceX Demo-1 and Demo-2 crew spacecraft test flights. Dailey was also a capsule communicator (Capcom) controller and instructor.

She was selected as a flight director in 2021 and chose her call sign of “Horizon Flight” during her first shift in November of that year. She has since served as the Lead Flight director for the ISS Expedition 68, led the development of a contingency spacewalk, and led a spacewalk in June to install a new solar array on the space station. She is currently working on development of the upcoming Artemis II mission and the Human Lander Systems which will return humanity to the moon. Dailey was raised in Lubbock, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. She is married and a mother of two. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time outdoors.

Chloe Mehring started her NASA career in 2008 in the Flight Operations’ propulsion systems group and supported 11 space shuttle missions. She served as propulsion support officer for Exploration Flight Test-1, the first test flight of the Orion spacecraft that will be used for Artemis missions to the Moon. Mehring was also a lead NASA propulsion officer for SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft and served as backup lead for the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. She was accepted into the 2021 Flight Director class and worked her first shift in February 2022, taking on the call sign “Lion Flight”. Since becoming certified, she has worked over 100 shifts, lead the NG-17 cargo resupply mission team, and executed two United States spacewalks within 10 days of each other. She became certified as a Boeing Starliner Flight Director, sat console for the unmanned test flight in May 2022 (OFT-2) and will be leading the undock team for the first crewed mission on Starliner in the spring of next year. She originally is from Mifflinville, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in State College. She is a wife, a mom to one boy, and she enjoys fitness, cooking and gardening.

Original "main" save of the folder before dagger save replaced them. First time I saved a game twice and left save 1 as it was.

Dagger save for all it's worth is actually harmless created from ng+ to get all Loop dialogues

Ok so I’m personally thinking like early seasons Spencer…

So backstory:

so you two meet at something really random, like you’re picking up your friend from their lecture and he’s just there giving the lecture with Gideon or something.

You actually laugh at his jokes (bc ur not just a pretty face, duh) and you kinda catch his eye

You lowkey corner him… but it’s for a good cause and he reciprocates immediately!!!

You two go out on a few dates and then ur dating!!! :)))))))))))

The team has no clue you two are going out together until you post a picture and Penelope (who obviously follows you already) notices a certain person in the reflection…

Spencer and you obvi don’t get to spend so much time together since you’re always away on shoots and he’s on cases. 

But when you do spend time together he’s like the most cuddly, cute thing ever :(

He’s always just reading things from his memory as you two just cook or like, sit together.

He’s smiling whenever you hug or kiss him because he just can’t believe you're his!

He ALWAYS has his hands on you when you’re together. 

He has a certain paparazzo that he’s named his personal enemy no.1 because he’s a douche who’s constantly trying to take pictures of you at bad angles.

He obviously despises the paparazzi with a passion, especially one particular photo of the two of you kissing after a night out (aka Morgan printed it out 100 times and posted it all around the Quantico building)

As your relationship progresses (aka you get engaged!) He goes to more and more events with you and he looks so handsome in his suits !

He asked you to marry him in the sweetest way possible. It was like dusk during the winter and you were hiding from the world in your small cottage holiday home in Lake Tahoe. He just got down on one knee and asked, you both cried.

He is your personal hype man, like he loves anything you wear.

Common words are nouns and verbs

Common errors are reduplication (wawa for water, baba for bottle), gliding (putting w and y instead of l and r (wead for read)), cluster reduction (less consonants in a row (back for black)), final consonant deletion (ba for ball) AND MORE in the picture below. Babies make basically every error possible

So what if you need a sound you don’t have?

There are a couple common rules that you can follow to substitute sounds. (Or just delete them. That’s good too. Especially if there are two consonants touching)

Voice, place, manner. All consonants have these three characteristics. Usually, it’s the manner that’s tricky for kids. Stops (p,b,t,d,k,g) nasals (m, n, ng), and glides (w, y) are mostly developed first, while affricates (j, ch), fricatives (f, v, s, z, sh, zh, th), and liquids (l, r) are later.

As a rule of thumb, trade out a sound that’s made at the same location. For example, if you were going to say “vase,” you’d say “base,” because both v and b are produced with the lips. “Then” becomes “den”, because the stop that’s produced closest to the teeth is d.

Secondly, play attention to whether a sound is voiced. This means that your vocal cords are vibrating when you put your hand on your throat. If they are, choose a sound that is also voiced. Many sounds have a voiced and voiceless pair (b and p, t and d, etc). They’re produced in the exact same place. The only difference is whether you’re using your vocal cords.

Finally, r and l are always replaced by w and y. This is called gliding and it’s my favorite thing ever.

what brush do you use?

old answer: i mainly use the gasa gaya line pen for sketching and the t-pen for both sketching and inking as of 09/22/2023: i use the koya pen for sketching and inking and the gasa gaya line pen for inking occasionally. as of 12/19/2023: i use the a pen that feels like a pencil (鉛筆を感じる液だまりペン) with the pen pressure opacity turned on for sketching (i also use it for inking occasionally). i don’t ink that much right now but i still also use the gasa gaya line pen for it. as of 03/07/2024: i use both the a pen that feels like a pencil (鉛筆を感じる液だまりペン) and calish ink for both sketching and inking. as of 07/08/2024: i use the dry ink brush on clip studio paint.

do you do commissions?

Lost Fic #194

1. Turning to my fellow forum members because I can't find the fic and fear it might have been deleted: The fic starts with Crowley and Aziraphale at the Ritz talking about the Fall and Aziraphale is terrified of the idea of Falling. They have an argument and Crowley says something like I wish you had fallen then you wouldn't be so scared all the time and then Aziraphale leaves. The next morning Crowley goes to the bookshop to apologize and finds Aziraphale has Fallen, but also hasn't? There is now a Fallen Aziraphale with sheep horns and also a non fallen Aziraphale. The latter is seated at his desk and hasn't acknowledged his demon counterpart or realized they are there. Crowley wanting to figure out how this happens decides to take Fallen Aziraphale to his flat, but discovers that if they are away from Angel Aziraphale Fallen Aziraphale passes out. The fic centers on Crowley dealing with 2 Aziraphales and trying to explore a relationship with both. Later we learn that Aziraphale forced himself to forget he made the Fallen Aziraphale to explore what a relationship with Crowley could be like without the risk of Falling. There is a scene where Crowley buys fallen Aziraphale a floral hairband thing for around their horns. And he panics when Fallen Aziraphale suddenly vanishes when angel Aziraphale finally acknowledges he created them and is controlling both bodies in a 1 soul 2 bodies kind of deal. - @05nataku

3. Hello! :-) I'm looking for a 'through the ages' type fic. It was about how Crowley adopted a girl from Pompeii. From what I remember he had a huge house and Aziraphale & Crowley just bickered the entire time. They may have had to fake a relationship, but I'm not 100% sure about that. 4. Hi, hearing that series 3 will be based on the unwritten sequel reminded me of an old fic, but I've been unable to find it. The fic was book!omens / pre-tv series, and was a fan version of the unwritten sequel based on the info publicly available from what NG & TP had said about the plot - it involved Crowley & Aziraphale travelling America, Jesus, national parks, Aziraphale making notes while watching free 15 mins of porn on the TV (and annoying Crowley with how much time this was taking up). I am not sure if the fic was on a03, I have vague memories of reading it not on a white screen, so think it was maybe hosted on LiveJournal? I think I originally found it via a rec list of classic fics on tumblr sometime shortly after S1 came out, but have been unable to find that list. 5. Hello hello hello! Lovely stuff that you all are doing here! I've sauntered vaguely into this askbox because I'm looking for something- I really don't have high hopes for this to be found- it would take at least half a miracle, I think. But if anyone can find it, it's gonna be you, so i thought I might as well give it a shot. A few months ago, I read a wonderful little fic about Hastur and Ligur that I just CANNOT find anymore- pre fall setting, both were angels. Ligur was building the moon (or helping) and Hastur was some kind of watcher angel who was supposed to observe everything? I'm afraid I'm a bit blurry on the details, but I think Hastur was being made fun of by the other angels, and he hid in some kind of cave, feeling terribly overwhelmed and anxious- where Ligur later found him. The story then went on a little to describe the relationship they ended up forming through that. I'm terribly sorry that this is not a lot of info to go off of- I've looked through hundereds of fics and everything on the maggot husbands tag- but nothing was ringing any bells. Might have overlooked it, I'm not sure. It could just be gone. If there is any way anyone could help me find this again, I would be eternally grateful. These are two examples I cherry-picked from my favorites, but there's nothing more atmospheric than fighting giant robots while having these bangers in the background.

CLOSING REMARKS

AC6: Fires of Rubicon is an amazing game. It takes about 50-60 hours to complete (including NG+ and NG++), but I've sank more than 100+ hours into it as of writing this post. It offers an experience unlike any other, letting you not only build and costumize your massive war machine to your heart's content, experimenting with many different playstyles, but also let's you experience an amazing story with many hidden facades (in true FromSoftware style (did I mention this was a FromSoft game? Dark Souls FromSoft?)) and fight interesting and varied bosses.

Be warned, I have struggled on quite a few bosses, and even the tutorial boss is considered a "filter". However, when you do beat these ennemies, you feel a rush unlike any other.

I've spent all this time writing this and yet I haven't even talked about PvP, and thats because my enjoyment of it varies extremely depending on who I'm fighting. Some people run builds based around the meta (which I personnally find a bit boring, but if that's your vibe then go all out), but I find the truly entertaining matches to be players who aren't afraid to experiment, bringing unconventionnal weapons or builds and trying out interesting strategies. Some also throw all of that out of the window, and I've had quite a few matches end up with me and them simply throwing our weapons out and punching each other to death.

All around, I obviously could not recommend this game more. It's a good 9.5/10 for me, with my only criticism is that I wish there were more long-range and ballistic weapons (I'm a sucker for the sound of bullets ricocheing).

GET OUTTA HERE JACKASS!!! AND TAKE YOUR STUPID PLAGUE WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i LOVE how all of Judgement's attacks are understandable when you learn them but they're major scare tactics meant to intimidate the player when you first see them!!! not sure whether that aspect was intentional but it's very thematic. also very nice of them to dump a ton of HP packs right before the boss lmao, i went in there fully prepared though. Guardian's cloak, Blue Cloak's sword and Librarian's SyCom.

also the fact Drifter's HP drops to one after the fight and the stamina bar is zero here. very nice attention to detail but also fuck you devs that made me nearly cry :(

but nearly around 24 hours! that's not that bad for a first playthrough where i also aimlessly backtracked a lot! i feel like doing each area along with their respective 100% took me about four hours each, which again is also very fitting considering the themes for four in this game and how it means Death in certain cultures. the added extra was stuff like Soccer Kid and the Arena in Central Zone as well as the Library.

i also. hm. did NOT realize you only got two HP in NG+ and I think three in Alt. that'll suck to play as Alt but i can manage it. her attacks are cool. never doing NG+ though because two HP is sometimes a 1-hit kill. i'll just settle for rushing through keys on Standard and getting my outfits back again if i ever need to lmao. at least i have a quick way to do purple cloak now.

but yeah final verdict;

really enjoyed the game! <3 nearly as much as Hollow Knight! it'll be a fun game to revisit sometimes, might even become a yearly replay for me now that i know the maps and skills better.

i do agree with the fact that the game gets easier once you get a few upgrades, and a fully kitted out Drifter will barely struggle once you learn enemies' attack patterns. also that getting used to multi-dash is very important. still, this was a fun game to blind play.

i can't even really say i hated any of the areas except maybe Horde Mode which doesn't really count.

favourite area aesthetically was Lake because i'm a sucker for water areas but the Crystal Forest was my fave gameplay wise because of the crystals giving you free ammo and also just being a neat interaction. South wasn't much of a struggle except for the enemies, though i feel like it felt a bit small. not entirely a bad thing though, it was a nice switch up. i think i died the most on Hierophant but that was just because it was my first boss (and admittedly brutal with it's patterns for a newbie), but North had some of the easier enemies once i got used to them. fuck the Lake enemies, but i admit i made that hard on myself by not going back and getting the reflect upgrade stuff when i had the money, those help out a ton against the enemies.

toughest 8 module challenge room was probably South if only because of the machine guns enemies. i might've struggled more with them if i hadn't already seen them in the Horde Mode beforehand.

favourite gun is the basic pistol for it's speed, though crystal shotgun was useful for Horde Mode. (i know at least two hours of playtime were because i didn't realize stuff like the rifle was needed to trigger some switches...) my aim is also complete dogshit in this game lmao. walked right out of the Stormtrooper Academy with flying colours in this one lads.

for someone with chronic coughing, i can relate to poor Drifter a lot with it omg aaaaaa. also the elements of illness and inevitable death were hitting some personal points for me due to family members but it wasn't a bad experience. i felt at some points frantic during fighting. resigned when getting stuck into bullshit deaths. yet a constant willingness to push forward and not give up because what else is there to do but learn and experience. good feelings from a game that i resonated a lot with the gameplay!

Drifter is the new blorbo. :) also he got the Immortal Cell and killed Judgement and lived and everyone's cured now and we're ignoring the rest of that. we don't look at that. <3 it's okay just don't address it. :) smiles.

Since it’s been awhile, maybe I poke your brain on what your thoughts on the DLC are (game play, lord, sceneries, anything you’d like to share with us really)? Has it changed your headcanon on any of the characters, or did you find ways to incorporate the new lores into your interpretations? Most importantly, did you have fun?

Did I enjoy it? YES. Did I have qualms with some gameplay bits? YES but I’m a filthy casual on NG+2 or something and generally Not Good at Game. But I beat it. 

As for lore, it’s really a mixed bag. There’s a ton of stuff I’m delighted to have new or expanded lore for - Marika’s origins, Belurat and the entirety of Hornsent culture, Godwyn’s Death Knights, BAYLE???? VILE BAYLE!!!! etc etc (sometimes I listen to Igon’s voice lines just to psych myself up for real life). There are things I need to adjust my headcanon for a little, as well - St Trina, for example, has always been a facet of Miquella himself to me, a sort of alter ego he willingly takes on, which is how I enjoyed writing her in fic. To have her elaborated here as a separate person means taking that a little further if I write him/her/them again, but I think the parallel it draws between Marika/Radagon is hugely interesting as well.  

iirc there are a couple of instances in the base game where lore almost contradicts itself, but I think in some cases the DLC got a little sloppy. The timeline is also way foggier to me now than it was previously. I was a big fan of the idea that Messmer was entirely unknown to his siblings, written out of history after the Crusade (predating Marika ushering in the Golden Age of the Erdtree), but that contradicts the lore we get on Gaius and Radahn as they’re both personally acquainted with Messmer, and makes me wonder which of the other demigods might’ve been aware of him, and under what pretences might they have met. It makes for a lot of fic ideation, but I’m of the opinion that if you’re writing fic, sticking too closely to (the sometimes unhelpful) lore will stultify the work; so I’m trying to pluck little instances of new lore that interest me to bolster the story I want to tell.  

Like most of the fandom I have a huge beef with Promised Consort Radahn, and I’m still struggling with how to work that into my headcanon. To me, there is simply no reason for it. There are no indications of it in the base game, and you have to tie yourself into continuity knots for it to make any sense - and that’s just bad writing. I’m not against retconning things if they serve a purpose, but this was neither useful nor necessary (nor well done), and that’s fundamentally disappointing for a Fromsoft game. The more people aggressively try and justify it, the more I feel like the potential explanations unravel. If we’re going along with the assumption that Miquella *needs* a lord to ascend, we’ve had Candidate #1 since the base game: Godwyn. Half of what we know about base-game Miquella is that he spent time and resources trying to grant Godwyn some form of peace, while his hideous fate hangs over the narrative in perpetuity. And we give Radahn closure literally in the first act of the game. I’m a firm believer in Miquella knowing 100% what he’s about, but in this singular instance blinded by love for Godwyn and an all-consuming desire to *fix this* by resurrecting some nightmarish, malformed version of him. There’s so much juicy story to be told in Miquella refusing to acknowledge the thing he brought back is not his brother, and for all that godhood and remaking the world into utter passivity can do, it can’t retrieve Godwyn’s irretrievable soul. All that to say, I’d even take Malenia as his promised consort - it would made more sense than Radahn, too.

Anyway tldr I don’t have to think about how disappointing that is now, because the fic I’m working on is around Marika’s ascension, and more specifically Messmer and Melina’s upbringing. There’s another on the backburner but I’m on the fence about it since it hasn’t reached an outline stage yet, and I don’t start anything unless I am 100% sure I know how to finish it, and finish it well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Ty for the ask! As is the case with me, the rest of my musings on the lore come through in fic writing, because those are the texts dumps I’m good at. Here’s a little (young) Melina and Messmer wip as thanks.
