The Second Half of the Year Has Begun–Already!

I’ve had a fun few weeks–including my usual writing. Plus, I heard that the Dog Writers Association of America, of which I’m a member, was looking for humorous articles for their upcoming issue of RUFF DRAFTS, their publication, so I of course had to submit a short article about how my puppy keeps me from concentrating on my writing by insisting that I play fetch with her while I’m sitting at…

Resigning my Membership in RWA
It has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for me since December 23rd when the news broke that Courtney Milan was being censured by RWA, for reasons that were quickly revealed to be bullshit, opening a Pandora’s box of institutionalized racism, machiavellian social climbing, manipulative staffing, tails wagging the dogs, and so on. I pulled my book from the RITAs–but they later cancelled the awards and refunded all entry fees anyway. I then went to resign my membership, but realized it was up in February anyway. So I kept access to the forums and emails just in case things really turned around.
They haven’t. I was mostly happy to see the communique from the recently hired DEI consultant, Michelle Silverthorn of Inclusion Nation, but there is still so much to be done to regain my trust… I’m not sure the organization ever will at this point. And this is what I told them in my resignation letter, emailed today when a renewal notice popped up that said:
“Dear Cecilia, Thank you for another year as a member of Romance Writers of America. We know it has been a challenging one, and we appreciate you sticking with us. We have already begun building RWA 2.0, and in the year to come (and beyond) we are embracing a new chapter as an inclusive and equitable organization. We value your voice and your vision, and we hope you choose to remain a member to join us in this important work.”
I really want to believe those words. I do. But I feel burned by the ways that RWA has performed in the past.
I wrote:
Thanks for the reminder, but I’ve decided to resign my membership. I just can’t be a part of RWA any longer.
I didn’t join when I pivoted my career from erotic science fiction/fantasy into romance back in 2008-2009 because of all the garbage I had heard about racism, bigotry, and small-mindedness in the RWA. I had heard stories from other authors about how if I was writing anything erotic, kinky, queer, or featuring non-white characters (*all* of which I do) I could expect to be condescended to and that the information and contacts I would make would be of limited use.
Then Sylvia Day was elected president. Sylvia was important to me for multiple reasons, including the fact she wrote kinky erotic romances and that she, like me, is half-white/half-Asian. Talking with her at a book conference and then reading some things she had written as president convinced me to stick my head into RWA National in 2011 and attend my local conference. Shortly after that Courtney Milan–who, like me, is an outspoken advocate for diversity on Twitter and also half-white/half-Asian–joined the board, and I was convinced that things were truly changing. I joined. I entered the RITAs. I taught workshops at RWA national and for various regional chapter conferences, even keynoting a few. At the most recent conference in New York, between the diversity represented by the incoming board members and the statement made by the 2019 RITA award ceremony, I really believed the needed changes were truly taking root and that RWA was an institution that I could be invested in for a long time.
I don’t believe that anymore. That magical RITA night is forever tainted. It now feels like that ceremony used the voices of those trailblazers like Sandra Kitt and Radclyffe to paste a “politically correct” image onto a deeply racist, bigoted organization. And I don’t want to be used that way.
It’s going to take a lot to bring me back at this point. To borrow a phrase from Elizabeth Warren, it’s going to take “big, structural change.” RWA needs to be proactive on many fronts, not just regarding equity and inclusion within membership and its structure, but to be the powerful advocate for authors that it truly should be. RWA should be taking strong stances against delinquent publishers, against monopolistic practices by Amazon, against rights grabs by the Big 5, and many other issues facing romance authors today. I’ll be watching and hoping for that change to come. If it doesn’t, it’s not in the best interest of my career (or my mental health) to uphold a rotten status quo.
Thanks for listening.

Indian states and cities don’t have adequate funds to tackle climate crisis - analysis
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court, which ordered a ban on stubble burning in states around Delhi, on Monday lashed out at the Centre and the states for their failure to do anything to improve the quality of Delhi’s air. Ajay Mathur, TERI - The Energy & Resources Institute’s director general, speaks to Hindustan Times on Delhi’s air pollution, climate change and the forthcoming Conference of Parties in Spain. KD: At the Sustainable Dialogue on Air Pollution, you said Delhi’s air pollution is a solvable problem. What are the solutions (technology and finance)?AM: Air pollution in Delhi is a broad, year-round problem, and not just an episodic problem. We have put forward definitive measures for tackling both peak and non-peak pollution sources. Some of the peak air pollution episodes in Delhi can be avoided by preventing stubble burning in neighbouring states. Measures such as biomass aggregation by state/central authorities, creating a market for biomass briquettes, and converting crop residue into fuel to operate decentralised cold storage facilities will reduce the impact of crop burning by 40%. We also advise community burning of firecrackers by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), instead of individual use. To combat non-peak the sources, focus should be on switching to LPG in the residential sector, phasing out of pre-BS-IV private vehicles, transitioning to natural gas in industries, and effective mechanised sweeping to collect road dust. According to our assessment, these measures altogether can bring down Delhi’s PM 2.5 levels by 46% during winters. We don’t have a silver bullet; we need multiple actions by all stakeholders. Overall costs could be raised through green bonds by state/central government. These bonds can provide commercial loans to industries, while other stakeholders can receive subsidies/incentives. We believe that a five-year period is adequate to make the transition. KD:You are a member of the PM’s Council for Climate Change. Are Indian states doing enough to tackle climate crisis? Which are the areas where they need to improve?AM: Tackling climate change at the sub-national level in India is driven by naturally occurring events or it is an economics-driven energy choice. All states have a State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC), which clearly outlines the vulnerabilities that each state faces. All states are now going through the revision of respective SAPCCs. What we learn now from the first cycle of SAPCCs is the lack of sectoral actions and associated investment plans resulted in its poor implementation. The revision provides us with the opportunity to create sectoral plans, which include implementation and investment plan, unique to the state to have meaningful action at the state level. The other key issue at the state level is the poor access to finance, which proves to be a big impediment to any state or city-level action. KD: In the last few years, the impact on climate crisis has been visible across India, including urban areas, our economic engines. But many cities don’t seem to have a working climate change action plan. AM: Cities in India are the largest consumers of resources, including energy and water. They are also large generators of waste. As climate change impacts are now more pronounced through increased droughts and floods, cities are now facing a visible brunt of it. Moving to renewable sources of electricity reduces their reliance on fossil fuels — is something now that is now well-embedded in the Indian electricity sector. Energy efficiency improvements in both residential and industrial sectors have gone a long way in bending the trajectory of energy consumption and models like the ones used for LEDs and now for agricultural solar pumps have influenced behaviour to make a more conscious energy choice. KD: How can India improve climate communication?AM: Today, the Indian consumer is much more aware than it was 10 years ago. We have seen this with the Star Level Programme with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency where the consumers now demand higher star rated appliances. This is the kind of power that effective communication possesses. Smart appliance choices, efficient use of water, and waste segregation are three key areas, I feel, which are the most crucial at an individual level. Using various platforms of communication, including print, digital, and social media could go a long way in creating much-needed awareness to tackle climate change. Before we get into understanding the improvements in climate communication, we need to understand where the general public is at large has the maximum influence to make. KD: What are your expectations from COP, which starts on December 2 in Madrid? AM: The Paris Rulebook finalisation is of utmost importance to operationalise the Agreement, which kicks in from 2020. At the last year’s COP, most of the rulebook was finalised. However, the article on market-based instruments, Article 6, has proved to be the most contentious to resolve. While now there are options that are available to move towards a landing zone acceptable to all parties, there are still many differences to resolve. One of the key issues is around the future of clean development mechanism (CDM) and its transitional arrangements. KD: Why is this ocean-focused COP important for India?AM: With over 7,500 kilometres of coastline, oceans are vital to our thriving economy. Any impact on the sea-level rise will have a huge bearing on the Indian economy. A relatively large part of our population depends on the oceans for its livelihood and oceans are now experiencing more naturally occurring phenomena exacerbated by climate change. Discussions around adaptations actions and sustainable livelihoods, including the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage, thus become very important for India. It was the night before Christmas, errr, RWA National. For countless romance writers, published and not, this is the biggest annual event in their professional calendar. Let’s hope Disney World lives up to its motto, “where dreams come true”.
The book signing event on Saturday afternoon is open to the public and the proceeds go to literacy organisations (author seating chart at the link). The awards ceremony is by invitation-only but will be live-streamed on Thursday evening, July 27th, here. All the finalists of the various categories are listed here, Loretta Chase, Alyssa Cole, Tessa Dare, and Courtney Milan among them.
Is anyone here attending the signing or the conference itself?
Photos by attendees: invitation by Tammy Gray; Cinderella mouse ears by Teri Wilson; flair buttons by RWA; bag and badge by Gayle Parness; room key with Julia Quinn quote by Ever After Mail; writers on the Boardwalk by K. M. Jackson.

Doing it before the city government puts the hammer down at least makes them look like grown ups.
Having watched RWA implode since late December I now know more about large conventions than I did a while ago.  Most sign a contract guaranteeing a certain number of rooms will book at the hotel and in exchange they get free meeting rooms. That’s why they tell you to be sure to book the special room rate for event X, so they get credit for getting you to stay there.  If they don’t book that number or rooms or they cancel altogether they are on the hook for the penalties spelled out in the contract.  In RWA’s case they’re now holding a national event for a registration fee that’s less than a small city conference because they need to get the bodies in the door.  They’d lose even more money by cancelling than by operating at a loss.
If the 100 con’s financials are anything like that they’re going to let the city force the closure so they aren’t financially liable. I’m guessing they’re counting on Boston taking emergency measures similar to NY that will make the decision for them. Right now it’s scheduled for April 3-5, and there’s still a lot of room for this to get worse and for governments to make more proclamations.
I’m also surprised we haven’t heard more actors say they’re cancelling, but they’re probably taking a wait and see approach, too.  No one wants to let down their fans, but at a certain point being a part of making a pandemic worse also becomes an image issue.
can someone tell me why Bob deactivated for the billionth time?

Don’t let your business die in COVID-19 economic downturn
by murtazaamin | Jun 3, 2020 | Data | 0 comments
Businesses did what was right due to COVID-19. Shutting down their PoS stores, retail shops, and non-essential deliveries and working from home till the threat was over-was a right decision.  In reality, however, it is like leaping from one stone to another and letting the stones sink as soon as you step on them.  It is what happened with businesses across the world. They wanted their employees to be safe, but instead of that, their business and revenue went for a toss. As I type this, most of the countries in the world are entering into their fifty-fifth day of blanket lockdown and talking about liquid injections or stimulus packages for economic revival.
Be it a mom-and-pop store, an SME, a start-up or a multi-national company- all of are shutting down operations, laying off their employees, cancelling offer letters, leaving employees in the lurch. The businesses don’t know how to sustain through this economic downturn brought on by the pandemic without reducing their operations or strength. Just to put things into perspective, the world hasn’t experienced something like this since the great depression in 1929! But as the noted philosopher and historian Yuval Noah Harari puts it, have faith in human resilience.
First, calling it quits is not an option. You may have to take a few desperate measures now, but it doesn’t mean that it is all over and is the end of the world. The virus has been powerful enough to force the world to its knees, ending the acceleration of travel and hospitality industry or bringing the oil prices to a negative number for the first time – it may have ravaged the world economy. However, it still doesn’t have what you have got! You have ideas. The power to think it all through and to back-track your step to connect the dots which you missed earlier! After all, what’s more human than the fight for survival?
Review. Review. Review.
Nope, it is not a typo. It is to underline the importance of taking a hard look as to where does your business stand. Be it inventory, the cash flow or the data quality your business is relying on- you need to know how it can be improved upon. This economic downturn can be a blessing in disguise for the business processes you have been ignoring so long for the lack of time or some other excuse. Want to build a B2B email list or have been secretly wishing to revamp your big data with data mining techniques, now is the time. Take this economic downturn and turn the tables on it. Use this downtime in business to your advantage and to prepare ahead by taking it head-on. If you wanted to reach out to your customers via email marketing, but couldn’t due to a bad email list, now is the time to put it in a to-do list.
Now is also the time to take a hard look at your business’ data. Each company sits on a massive pile of data. It could be telephonic records, email, visiting cards, leads exchanged during trade conferences and events or the B2C or B2B email list sourced by a third-party vendor. This data could be misrepresented, incorrect or simply messed up in places, rendering your email marketing campaign and promotional activities useless.
Change your revenue model
The traditional store businesses were the worse hit amid this pandemic. Digital businesses, essential or non-essential, however, were connected to their customers. They even come up with a smooth yet brilliant tactic to shop now, buy later tactic to keep registering their presence among their customers. Traditional, brick-and-mortar shops just had to close their shops amid COVID-19 lockdown.  The next step for you is to change the way you see your business. It is time to take a few drastic steps and embrace a digital model to open new possibilities to earn more and never stop the cash flow.
During this COVID-19 lockdown, I have seen some strategic yet make-shift business models where mom-and-pop ‘snacks’ stores or ‘Kirana’ stores have tied up with RWAs of societies and arranged for required item. The payment was cashless, and contactless made mainly via digital wallets or net banking. Remember, desperate times call for more inventive measures, and this is what was done! Depending upon the nature of your business, you can too adopt a digital marketing model to reach out to more customers. If you already have a digital model, you would want to tweak it keeping recent changes and the new normal in mind.
Build an email list
The struggle to reach out to your customers when they are spending most of their time doing ‘Netflix and Chill’ or worrying about their finances is real. It becomes even more challenging to convince your customers when you don’t know if you have the right email IDs or not. So, now is the time to adopt data mining services proactively!
Why do you need data mining, you say?
Data mining helps you in extracting information, processing the data and identifying the useful patterns. Have a look at why a business- be it small or big- needs to deploy data mining techniques.
Data mining services help in capturing large data sets and let businesses drive actionable insights out of it. Each business is driven by data these days, and with manual data scraping, you can keep data that makes sense and leave what doesn’t. If you are building a B2B email list, it verifies if your customers are indeed using those email IDs or have moved on. It lets you protect email sender reputation while enhancing your reach significantly.
Data scrubbing and data verification are an integral aspect of data mining. These clean the data and help you derive information out of it that you can base your decision on. As a result, your marketing team can run a successful email marketing campaign, your sales team can reach out to people efficiently, and the product team can deliver on the dotted line with a product or service that fulfil the expectation of the customers.
With data mining, you run a business thriving on sheer data and its power. You are in a position to decode customer behaviour and derive insights from their purchase journey.
Whether you are a retail store, a real-estate business, a travel agency- time to sow the data is now so that you can reap its benefits later. The excellent news is that data mining isn’t a mango tree, and you could see its result almost immediately with more click-through rates and better reach!
Show courtesy to your customers
Your customers are going through a difficult time as well.  So, be kind to them. Freeletics offered a FREE one-month subscription to facilitate its customers during the lockdown and to promote stay-at-home regulation. Similarly, Spotify and other podcast services extended FREE subscription to the new user. It is not a charity. It is harnessing the goodness so that a brand could attract fence-sitters and later on, convert them into a loyal one. You could have a discount, or trim down the delivery fee or eliminate anything that is a blockade between you and your customer. Once a customer has faith in you and your brand, they will come back to you- irrespective of everything. Offering them extended warranty, easy return policies and guarantee on their purchase can make you a trustworthy choice. The prime example of this would be Hyundai. The car brand launched the Hyundai Assurance Return Program amid 2008 recession and promised its customers that it would buy a recently purchased car back if its customer loses their job. The brand share saw unprecedented growth, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they have launched a rehashed version of the same program at present as well.
Reach out differently
You are an offline business, even maybe a mom-and-pop store, but now it is time to make the switch. People are apprehensive about stepping out, so you need to reach out to sustain your business and survive through this pandemic. So, tweak your marketing strategy a bit and move on to digital strategy. You don’t need to have a full-fledged website or a full-blown shopping cart. If you want, you can reach out to your customers with a digital payment wallet or use WhatsApp’s business account services. Zoom, the teleconference app became not only a popular choice among people working remotely but also with teachers and students alike when it offered online classes for free. Similarly, the New York Times acquired an audio app called Audm to extend its base with growing subscribers of podcasts and audiobook narratives.
Starbucks also has twenty-five million reward card users that make this multi-national American coffee house bask in more than $1 working capital. If you have an online presence already but no email marketing campaign in place, initiate it now! Everybody is inside their house, and you have their attention! However, ensure that the data quality of your email list is up to the mark.  Use email data validation and email verification solutions to rely on the data of your customers you have. A study suggests that data mining can help small and mid-size business to identify high-risk clients, improve business processes and make more money. So, before you switch modes, get to the first point and take a hard look (almost like an outsider) if you are ready to earn as well as save money and your business!

Here’s hoping that these easy yet significant steps would become your stepping stones in these hapless economic times. You don’t have to be aggressive to save your cash flow or revenue but all the more reasonable and prudent with what you have and work within limited resources and restrictions imposed on you. Take this challenge and turn it into an opportunity. Use this downturn and downtime to experiment marketing strategy and acclimatize to the new normal imposed by COVID-19.

The #RWA17 Workshop on Creating Ensemble Casts
I’m at the RWA national conference in Orlando right now, where there’s always something more to think about, learn, or analyze about writing or romance publishing. In particular one writing craft panel I wanted to highlight was yesterday I attended a great panel workshop given by four New York Times bestselling authors: Lexi Blake, Cynthia Eden, Laura Kaye, and Rebecca Zanetti. The topic was on creating a large cast of characters to carry a series and the room was packed.
The discussion ranged over various details from the nuts and bolts of creating a series “bible” to keep all the details right from book to book (character eye color, favorite catch phrases, back stories, each character’s hidden secret or flaw, etc) to developing secondary characters into primary ones when “their turn for a book” comes.
I didn’t transcribe the entire panel since I was trying to focus on absorbing things relevant to me, but two questions in particular I got down almost every word, and I’m posting to share it with everyone.
Laura Kaye acted as moderator, asking the leading questions for the panel and then finishing off giving her own answer.
First she asked the panelists to describe the pros and cons of working with large casts.
Cynthia Eden: We’ve all heard the expression that no man or woman is an island? Characters don’t exist in isolation. You’re never just writing about one individual. You are by circumstance always writing about a cast of characters. You give them an instant background with their family and friends. With my romantic suspense novels I like to use teams. I write FBI teams. You’re going to need a lead investigator, a profiler, an ME, etc. You’re going to need all these people. So that’s a major pro. And any cast leads to sequels. That’s the biggest pro because it has your reader eager to go on to the next book.
Lexi Blake: Pro of a large cast? It’s fun! I like to write a lot of dialogue and you get a lot of dialogue when you have a big ol’ cast of characters. The con is… I guess there isn’t one. Well, maybe it’s that you have to make each character unique. That can be a challenge. (But that’s fun, too.)
Rebecca Zanetti: A large cast is great to show characterization. You act differently with different people. I have one sister I tease like crazy and one that I can’t. You can show different facets of a character and that’s one I like a lot. Also the slow burn character, I love. That person who shows up in book one and they build up for a long time before they get their story. You can develop them over a series. The con is you sometimes get too many people on a page. Even if you’re on book 4 or 5 of a series, you hope new readers are picking them up. You don’t want to confuse that new reader with too many new characters all at once.
Lexi: Well, and as you write the books they get longer because you keep having to put everyone’s favorite characters in there. Then you have to do the backyard BBQ scene to get them all in!
Laura Kaye: I agree, on the backyard BBQ. The thing that is great about having all these characters is you have the built in relationships where it’s easy to have humor, and it’s easy to have stakes because there are many people who could be hurt or feel lied-to or betrayed. Lots of emotional hooks for your readers. Not just for your sequels where they buy into a beloved secondary character, but for the tertiary characters who can manage to hook interest and get pulled into the story. You can expand a series if it takes off and starts doing well. It gives you the flexibility to do spin-offs. The cons are that your POV characters can’t just absorb a tennis match of other people talking. They have to be engaged in the conversation. Then there’s the giant pronoun problem when you have, say, five military guys on your team planning a mission and you have to figure out the mechanics of writing that dialogue so it’s not monotonous to the reader. The other con is if you’re going with a traditional publisher and you have 5 main characters, but your publisher stops after three books. You can end up with disappointed readers on your hands.
What are some tips for developing such a large number of characters? What are some tips for distinguishing them?
Rebecca: One thing I like is nicknames, if he calls her honey or sweetcheeks makes a difference. Also their motivations. If you play a joke on one friend, they laugh, another one never forgives you. They’re different. There are the little tidbits you put in. I have one guy that likes grape energy drinks and if I don’t put that in readers will write and say does he not like those anymore? Also their wounds. What hurt this guy, what is he still afraid of?
Lexi: if you don’t know those characters, the reader won’t know them. I think you don’t have to know everything before you start, but you have to know what makes them laugh, what makes them cry. I’ve written a lot of small town romance. And getting to know the neighbors and walking through the town can pull you in. But even an office building can have a sense of place. Put your characters around a table and see who talks first. If you’re just putting traits in a notebook and there’s no real emotion behind them it’s going to show. I love using dialogue. Some speak, fast, some slow, and you need to be able to hear them in your head.
Cynthia: I like to work with opposites on a team. You’ll have one guy who’s the hothead and always jumps right in. Then I have a team member who likes to sit back and get all the info before jumping in. So she and the first guy are going to have a clash. My action-first character, if he’s angry, he’s not just going to sit still. He’ll be pacing and clenching his fists and all that. All this body language that this character is doing with reveal his personality. The one who is the analytical sort? She’s not going to just kick in a door. She’ll be trying to talk the person down. Those personality styles lead me into what they should do in each scene. You don’t want them doing something that isn’t their normal nature without a really, really good explanation. Be aware, though, I’ve had New York editors tell me that the way I talk isn’t real, people don’t say that. I’m Southern. Something that seems so normal to me was something they didn’t like. But I think bringing in realistic dialect is a great way to distinguish the characters.
Laura: Think of it as a shorthand for your character. I learned a lot about creating unique characters from reading JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. One is the blind king who wears the weird sunglasses. And one is the sarcastic one with the dragon tattoo who sucks on lollipops all the time. Then there’s the black-eyed, scarred one who is soulless and never speaks. I don’t even have to use their names: they’re immediately distinct. And when all twelve are in a room having a briefing session, you don’t have to use their names, because you know when so quickly from their distinguishing characteristics who’s who. Also, what are things that make the reader see them as endearing or real, that make the reader fall in love with that person? That grape energy drink or they’re a dog-lover or whatever. The more you can create those personal things the better, beyond scars and tattoos, beyond eye color and hair color. I have a lot of guys who swear but they can’t all say “Aw, hell.” Only one of them can say that and the other guys have to say something else.
As usual, the conference has been fantastic. If you are writing romance, or any kind of commercial fiction, I highly recommend attending one of these if you can afford it. In romance, I really feel I can’t afford *NOT* to be here!
