One day I was working in the backyard when I came across this plant. The roots were exposed and the soil around it had eroded. It looked like it had been knocked around a few times. With its torn, broken leaves and browned edges, I wasn’t sure if it was worth keeping. 

Ultimately I decided I should respect its life and so I placed it in a new spot underneath a large plant that would protect it from the sun. 

In time I hoped it would heal and that new leaves would grow to replace the old. I nourished it with fresh soil and for months I’ve been watering it. The other day I approached the plant and I found these gorgeous orange flowers had blossomed. It took my breath away. 

The longer I garden the more I understand the abundance of lessons we can take from nature. New leaves may not have grown to replace the broken, but with time, patience, and care, the plant began to thrive.

In life we may find ourselves wishing to erase or conceal our wounds, but I believe there is profound beauty in embracing the truth of what we’ve lived through. There is a certain kind of triumph in valuing all aspects of our story. Recognizing our torn pieces leads to a deeper appreciation when we choose to bear witness to the full journey it took to blossom.

I found this dried curled vine in @prospect_park, a circle, a reminder of the flexibility and adaptability we need to survive. Even this tough woody vine found a way to wrap around itself, and cling to a tree to weather the storms. It’s flexibility became this circle, simple and worn by so many orbits around the sun.
