Well thank you for taking interest in it!

Now, I can't entirely answer this in a simple way, but I can certainly try. This information is all as of mid-to-late Canto II Southbound.

Anser's natural biosphere is exactly that- it's natural. Windwalkers and other native lifeforms can still be found around the planet to this day, albeit rarely. They, too, are chromium-based lifeforms for the most part, although some carbonic life does also dwell there.

What you're probably thinking of are the machines, or the modern biosphere.

The modern biosphere consists of nanomechanical life. We aren't entirely sure where the nanomachines came from, unfortunately. The most likely theory is that they came from the Neahkahnie region of Hatzegonia, which is the furthest island we consider to be part of the Outer Isles.

Nowadays we actually believe that humans may have accidentally allowed machines to overtake Anser. The nanites are not natural, and they came from somewhere. We do know they are incredibly unstable, which is one of the reasons behind why Anserian evolution happens at bullet-speed in comparison to Earth's. The machines also seem to share at least some relation to the other lifeforms, which has... Disturbing implications, to say the least.

The only "intelligent design" to Anser's lifeforms has happened very recently, with people having altered the genes of machines for various purposes. At least - so we think.
