Nemo: Ah professor, love is difficult to predict; but, I promise you, were you to become a worm I would ensure you had the most comfortable life possible. Using the knowledge I have collected over the decades I would design and build a habitat that would provide you with the optimal conditions for your genus of worm; be it polychaete, echiuran, nemertean or other.

Aronnax: *heart eyes*

Ned: *loud disgusted noises*

One thing I’ve really been thinking about is how horrific 20,000 Leagues is from Ned’s perspective. He’s a captive in the alien world he was once king of and his captor is a narcissistic genius with a death wish?!?!

Some thoughts:

They did Aronnax quite nicely!

Nemo looks pretty good, but more Russian than Indian

Ned is very pretty and has, for some reason, a hoop earring, and is almost never seen with his striped shirt

Conseil looks absolutely nothing like Conseil

The scenery and fish illustrations are top-notch

Does anyone want to see?

Twenty Thousand Leagues fandom, if you're out there, I am BEGGING someone to draw this moment from chapter 14. Just the mental image of Ned running around screaming in the background of Conseil calmly looking at some specimen has got me sitting here giggling like a madman

I've been daydreaming about my imaginary 20k Leagues adaptation all day

Character design notes:

I wanted Aronnax's clothes onboard the Nautilus to resemble Nemo's the most both in color scheme and silhouette, signifying how he was thoroughly won over by the captain's way of life. Similarly, Aronnax's facial hair and grown-out hair texture starts to resemble Nemo's as well the longer he stays onboard.

Conseil's clothing is closer in style to Aronnax's. Also his appearance barely changes over the many months he stays onboard the Nautilus.

Ned's style stays the same onboard the Nautilus, but his color scheme becomes gradually more muted as the story progresses.

Nemo's clothing (and the clothing of those on the Nautilus) is not supposed to accurately resemble any real-life historical clothing. This is to represent how Nemo has distanced himself from the rest of the world and how ahead of their time his inventions are, and definitely not me copping out because I'm afraid of getting things wrong with drawing period-accurate clothing.

Shout out to Ned Land for calling it like it is. Conseil is too polite to mention it, but Ned don't care. If this is going to happen in front of his (seaweed) salad, then he's not letting anyone forget it.
