South African police say evidence gathered so far leads them to believe the killing of popular rapper AKA was an assassination.
KwaZulu-Natal police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said the gunman had approached AKA from behind and shot him at close range in the side of the head.
A second gunman then started firing to deter onlookers from responding to the "hit", he added.
One of these rounds killed AKA's friend, celebrity chef Tibz Motsoane.
The shooting occurred outside a restaurant in the coastal city of Durban on Friday night.
While police work to establish a full picture of what happened to AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, his father has asked people to stop speculating on social media.
Tony Forbes says the family are focusing on giving their son "a dignified send-off", and he has thanked the many well-wishers whose support is "making it easier to cope".
He has also paid tribute to Motsoane, saying he was "like a brother" to AKA.
No arrests have yet been made.
But police say they know the identities of the "two shooters", and are still checking the identities of all of those at the scene in Durban that night.
Investigators are now using the suspects' data to piece together their communication and movements in the run-up to the killings, Gen Mkhwanazi has told the Newzroom Africa TV channel.
"We know that the aim was to first kill AKA, and the second suspect could have killed any other [person] because they fired a couple of shots - so anybody who was on the way could have been hit," he says.
AKA is to be buried on Saturday and a public memorial service will be held on Friday afternoon at the Sandton convention centre in the main city, Johannesburg, his father says.
He began his musical career as part of the rap group Entity before he launched his solo career, winning several awards in South Africa for his music.
He was also celebrated internationally, with several nominations for a Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award in the US and an MTV Europe Music Award.
Hours before his death, the 35-year-old posted on social media about his upcoming album, Mass Country, which is set for release later this month.

South African lesbian couple murdered in alleged hate crime

South African lesbian couple murdered in alleged hate crime
Tumblr media
A young lesbian couple have been murdered in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, allegedly by the former male partner of one of the victims.
According to media reports, on 27 August, Nombulelo Bhixa, 28, and Minenhle Ngcobo, 22, were approached by Ngcobo’s ex-boyfriend. An argument ensued, during which the man allegedly shot both women in the head.
Newzroom Africa suggested that the motive behind the murder was the ex-boyfriend’s inability to accept that his ex was romantically involved with a woman.
It is believed that the man, with whom Ngcobo shared a child, had been harassing the couple for some time. Ngcobo had previously filed a protection order against the suspect.
Local LGBTQIA+ group Uthingo Network condemned the murder as a stark and heartbreaking reminder of the deep-seated homophobia and violence that continue to plague South African society.
“This heinous act, motivated by hatred and prejudice, is not just an attack on two individuals but a brutal assault on the principles of equality, dignity, and human rights that our South African democracy stands for,” Uthingo Network director Brian Sibeko-Ngidi said.
“The systematic lack of awareness and understanding in these communities contributes to an environment where such hate crimes can occur frequently and with little consequence.”
The organisation went on to say that this “tragedy calls for urgent and comprehensive action at all levels”.
They called for enforcement of hate crime laws, training for police officers and education programmes.
‘All I know is that they were very much in love with each other’
Leoni Chamane, director of trans-led organisation Iphimbo Lothingo (Ilora), added that the murders were also a form of gender-based violence.
“The government still does not include members of the LGBTQI+ in statistics about gender-based violence. Awareness programmes are non-existent,” Chamane said.
“When reported, they normally face secondary victimisation from law enforcement.”
Bhixa’s close friend Bongekile Mkhize spoke to The Witness and said the community was “shocked and heartbroken” by the “senseless tragedy”.
“All I know is that they were very much in love with each other.”
A police spokesperson confirmed that the case is under investigation, but no arrests have been made.

Lesbian couple murdered by one of the women’s ex-boyfriends
A lesbian couple was shot to death in Edendale, South Africa, in an act of violence being investigated as a hate crime. Nombulelo Bhixa, 28, and Minenhle Ngcobo, 22, both worked together at a store in the city center. Related Candace Owens says TikTok is socially engineering men to be gay The far-right host’s latest conspiracy theory says the Chinese app is forcing Americans into “unnatural behaviors.” On August 27, the pair was shot as they were getting into a taxi. The suspect is one of the women’s ex-partners and the father of her child. He apparently did not accept that his former partner was now in a relationship with a woman, Newzroom Africa reports. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The alleged perpetrator had harassed the couple in the past. One of the victims reportedly filed a protection order against him after he continuously harassed the couple. A friend of the two, Bongekile Mkhize, told The Witness, “All I know is that they were very much in love with each other.” Mkhize also said she was “shocked and heartbroken” by the “senseless tragedy.” “I am hurt about what has happened. What hurts the most is that no one is giving us proper answers as to what happened.” Uthingo Network, an LGBTQ+ group based in the region, called the killing “horrific” in a statement posted on Facebook. “This brutal act highlights the deep-seated homophobia and violence that persists in South Africa, especially in rural areas where LGBTI+ individuals are often marginalized and under-protected. The systematic lack of awareness and understanding in these communities contributes to an environment where such hate crimes can occur frequently and with little consequence,” the statement said. “The fear of further victimization often silences those who seek justice, perpetuating a dangerous cycle of violence and impunity.” Uthingo Network said that the government, community, and individuals should “stand together against all forms of hatred and violence, working towards a future where no one is targeted for who they are or who they love.” A council member from the city where the shooting took place, Councilor Sanele Zuma, also condemned the deaths. “What has happened is not something we take lightly as a community. It is shocking to us that there are people who still lose their lives just because of their sexual orientation.” Zuma also noted the tragic irony of the shooting occurring during Women’s Month. A police spokesperson, Sergeant Sifiso Gwala, confirmed to Witness that the case is under investigation, but no arrests have been made. “We are following up on leads and appealing to the community to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation,” Gwala said. http://dlvr.it/TCpqqv
