Korai japán puskatörténelem a Golden Kamuy tükrében: Murata, Ariszaka és a 38-as típus

Az Elfnet.hu rendkívül informatív cikkét hívom segítségül, hogy betekintést nyújtsak a japán puskagyártás korai évtizedeibe. Olyan fegyvereket mutatok be, melyek a Golden Kamuy c. mangában és animében is többször megjelennek. A történelmi ihletésű, orosz-japán háború után játszódó Golden Kamuy katonák, dezertőrök és vadászok útját követve emel ikonikussá egy-egy puskatípust. Az Elfnet cikkét olvasva általános képet kapunk a századforduló Japán Birodalmának puskagyártásáról, de a Golden Kamuy miatt három fegyvernek szentelek különös figyelmet, melyek a 18-as Murata, a 30-as Ariszaka és a 38-as típusú puska.

Murata, az első japán gyártmányú puska

Bejegyzésemet teljesen az Elfnet cikkére hagyatkozva írom, ezért szeretném az említett weboldal saját soraival bemutatni a japán gyártmányú puskák korai történelmét, Golden Kamuy-ból vett mangapanelekkel alátámasztva az információkat. Kezdjük is el!

„A japánok az 1840-es években szembesültek rendkívüli elmaradottságukkal, ezért (elsősorban Hollandiából) kovás puskákat vásároltak. (…) Az 1800-as évek közepétől azonban nyugaton robbanásszerű fejlődés ment végbe nemcsak a hajógyártásban, de a kézifegyver-fejlesztésben is, ezért a japánok (a nyitás részeként) kénytelenek voltak továbbra is európai fegyverekre támaszkodni.

1880-ban készült el a Murata puska: egy egylövetű, 11 mm-es fekete lőpor-töltetű töltényt használó fegyver, a francia Fusil Gras Modéle 1874 helyi másolata. A fegyver hivatalos elnevezése 13-as típus volt, mivel a Meidzsi császárság modernkori uralkodásának 13. évében született. E fegyvert a japánok igyekeztek modernizálni: 1883-ban megjelent a 16-os, majd 1885-ben a 18-as típus…”

Így néz ki a valóságban…

…és a Golden Kamuy mangában:

A 18-as típusú Murata puska a 22. fejezetben bukkan fel először. Hivatalos nevén a dzsúhacsinen-siki-muratadzsú (十八年式村田銃) a történet szerint eredetileg a legendás hokkaidói vadász, Nihei Tecuzó fiának birtokában van, aki ezzel harcol az első kínai-japán háborúban (1894-1895). Miután a fiú elesik a harcmezőn, a fegyver édesapjához kerül, aki félelmetes medvevadász hírnevet szerez vele:

Bár a kor előrehaladtával jelennek meg modernebb puskamodellek, a tapasztalt Nihei az újabb típusú ötlövetű puskák helyett ezt az egylövetű Muratát használja a vadászatokon.

„Oi, jobi no tama va daszenai no ka?”

„Hé, nem vesz elő tartalék lőszereket?”

…kérdezi Tanigaki Gendzsiró a legendás vadászt. Északi matagi vadásznép tagjaként Tanigaki jól tudja, hogy egylövetű puskák használatakor tartalék lőszereket szoktak az ujjak között tartani, hogy a puskák újratöltése szükség esetén minél hamarabb megtörténhessen:

Nihei megmagyarázza, életfilozófiája szerint miért nem tesz így:

„Gohacu areba gokai sóbu dekiru to kancsigai szuru. Ippacu de kimeneba koroszareru. Ippacu dakara hara ga szuvaru no da.”

„Ha öt lövésem lenne, azt hihetném, öt esélyem van eldönteni a játszmát. Ha egy lövés nem dönt, megölhetnek. Mivel egy lövésem van csak, azt higgadtan és eltökélten adom le.”

A medvevadász halála után a Murata puska a 7. Hadosztály becsületes dezertőréhez, a fent említett Tanigakihoz kerül, aki ereklyeként vigyáz rá és később egy ainu kisfiúnak, Cikapasi-nak adja, mikor elválnak útjaik:

Ez a 18-as típus tehát a Japánban elsők közt gyártott puskák egyik modellje, ami még további korszerűsítésre szorult. A Murata puskák esetén „érdemi változtatást csak az 1889-es 22-es típus hozott, mivel ez a típus már 8 mm-es füst nélküli lőport tüzelt és csőtárral rendelkezett”.

A fentebb említett régebbi 18-as típus és annak korábbi modelljei ugyanis feketelőport tüzeltek, melynek története az ókori Kínába nyúlik vissza. Ez az általános értelemben vett puskapor: salétrom, faszén és kén keveréke. A lövés leadása után a feketelőpor kisebb része hamuként rakódik le a csőben, nagyobb része azonban füstként távozik onnan. A régi Murata elavult lőporával kapcsolatosan is találunk utalást a Golden Kamuy-ban, ahol a sorozat japán mesterlövésze, Ogata Hjakunoszuke a lövés hangjából következtet arra, hogy Tanigaki, aki épp a régi típusú Murata tulajdonosa a nyomába ért és keresztbe tehet neki:

„Furui dzsú de cukavareru jó na kokusoku-kajaku no manobi sita dzsúszei ga hitocu mazatteita…”

„Mintha lett volna a lövések közt egy hosszabb, ami feketelőport tüzelő régi puskából származik…”

A lőszerek kapcsán itt van egy nagyon jó összefoglaló ábra a mangából:

„A lőszerek alakján kívül a másik nagy különbség az, hogy a Murata puska feketelőport tüzelt, míg a 30-as típus füst nélküli lőport. A 30-as típusban használt füst nélküli lőpor az addig megszokott feketelőporhoz képest nagyobb tűzerőt és hosszabb lőtávolságot produkált. Ha a Murata lőszerébe füst nélküli lőport töltenének és úgy sütnék el a fegyvert, akkor a túl nagy nyomás hatására a puska tönkre menne, vagy ha sikerülne is elsütni, a nagyobb kezdősebességhez nem passzoló gyújtófej alakja és a légellenállás miatt romlana a pontosság mértéke.”

A 30-as típusú Ariszaka

A Murata után haladjunk a modernebb puskák felé, nézzük tovább az Elfnet cikkét!

„(…) hamarosan a (Murata) 22-es típus is elavult, ezért a japán Császári Hadsereg egy új puskát igényelt. A Murata puskát tervező Murata Cunejosi (jav.) tábornok közbenjárásával egy másik tiszt, Ariszaka Nariakira megtervezett egy fegyvert, amelyet a japánok 30-as típus néven rendszeresítettek (1897-ben). A 30-as típus többek között a német 1893-as Mauser ismétlőpuskán alapult és részben új tölténye miatt hatékonyabbnak bizonyult a Murata puskánál, azonban maga a fegyver bonyolult volt (…), érzékeny volt a szennyeződésre és (...) gyakoriak voltak a különböző működtetési problémák.”

Ogata első kedvenc fegyvere, a 30-as típusú gyalogsági puska (japánul sandzsúnen-siki hoheidzsú, 三十年式歩兵銃, ) már egy ötlövetű ismétlőpuska volt, melyet a Japán Birodalom szárazföldi hadereje használt rendszeresített fegyverként olyan háborúkban mint az orosz-japán háború (1904-1905), az I. és II. világháború vagy a második kínai-japán háború (1937-1945). A 3950 g tömegű puskát 554.000 darabszámban gyártották, tervezője, Ariszaka Nariakira pedig Ariszaka Narizó néven a Golden Kamuy-ban is vissza-visszatérő epizódszereplő:

„Vatasi va nanimono ka to na? Vatasi va kimi ga kata ni kacuideiru sódzsú o cukutta mono de aru!”

„Hogy én ki vagyok?! Én vagyok az az ember, aki azt a puskát tervezte, ott a válladon!”

Így nézett ki valójában, megmosolyogtató a viselkedésének kifigurázása:

A 30-as típus a képregény elején kap főszerepet, ehhez a fegyverhez szokott Ogata, és a sztori elején szereplő japán katonákat és dezertőröket is mind ezzel a puskával felvértezve ismerhetjük meg. Főszereplőnk, Szugimoto Szaicsi is kezdetben ezt a fegyvert birtokolja, és már az első kötetben részletes bemutatóábrát kapunk a 30-as típusú Ariszaka puskáról és tartozékairól (lőszerek, szurony, tölténytáska):

A 30-as típus jelenik meg az első kötet és az első fejezet színes borítóján is, utóbbi itt látható:

A 30-as típus technikai jellemzőire most nem térnék ki, mert az Elfnet cikke aprólékosan összehasonlítja azt utódjával, a 38-assal. Inkább átadnám a szót a mesterlövész Ogatának, aki eleinte beszédesebb karakterként így jellemzi a 30-as típust, egy egész oldalon keresztül:

„Kono szandzsúnen-siki hoheidzsú Rosia-hei no sódzsú jori tama ga csíszaku ni-szanpacu atetemo sinan node fuszecu-dzsú nado to ivareta ga, satei-kjori to meicsú-ricu ni oite va kocsira ga ue datta. Júsú na dzsú da ga, nami no heisi de va hjaku métoru szaki to naru to aite ni csimeisó o ataeru no va muzukasii. Demo ore va szanbjaku métoru inai nara kakudzsicu ni atama o ucsinukeru. Ore to aisó ga au to iu vake da. Daisicsi-sidan va hórui kara Makusimu kikandzsú o uttekuru Rosia hei ni tekozutta. Ore no jó na szeimicu-sageki o tokui to szuru butai o cukutteokeba, anna ni sinazu ni szunda hazu da.”

„Ez a 30-as típusú gyalogsági puska az orosz puskáknál kisebb lőszerrel rendelkezik, és még két-három lövés sem feltétlen gyilkolja meg az ellenfelet. Ezen okok miatt nem tartották halálos fegyvernek. Azonban lőtávolság és találati arány tekintetében meghaladta a többi puskát. A 30-as típus kiváló fegyver, azonban egy átlagos katona száz méteren belül sem képes vele halálos sebet ejteni az ellenfelén. De én még háromszáz méteren belül is garantáltan átlyukasztom a koponyáját. Ezt a puskát nekem találták ki. A 7. Hadosztály alulmaradt a bunkerekből Maxim géppuskával tüzelő orosz katonákkal szemben. Persze ha felállítottak volna egy hozzám hasonlóan precíz mesterlövészekből álló egységet, az a sok halál nem történt volna meg.”

A puska lőtávolságára vonatkozó információkat szintén Ogatától tudjuk meg, aki a 95. fejezetben egy szökött fegyencet fenyeget meg a 30-as típussal a kezében:

„Szuzukava Kijohiro jo. Kono szandzsúnen-siki hoheidzsú no hjósijaku o miro. Niszen métoru de memori ga aru na? Niszen métoru szaki made dangan ga todokutte koto da. Niszen métoru idzsó ore kara nigekireru ka tamesite miru ka?”

„Figyelj, Szuzukava Kijohiro. Vess egy pillantást az irányzékra ezen a 30-as típusú gyalogsági puskán. Egészen kétezer méterig mennek rajt a fokok, ugye? Ez azt jelenti, hogy a kilőtt golyó elér kétezer méterre is innen. Teszel egy próbát, hogy el tudsz-e menekülni előlem kétezer méternél messzebbre?”

A 38-as típus

Nézzük meg a 30-as típus továbbfejlesztett változatát, a Meidzsi császár uralkodásának 38. évében, azaz 1905-ban kifejlesztett 38-as gyalogsági puskát (japánul szanpacsi-siki-hoheidzsú, 三八式歩兵銃)! Így néz ki a valóságban…

…és képregényben:

„Ezt a fegyvert már nem Ariszaka Nariakira, hanem tanítványa, a legendás Nanbu Kidzsiro tervezte, akinek több pisztolyát, puskáját, géppisztolyát és géppuskáját is használta a japán hadsereg.”

Ennek ellenére, főleg Nyugaton, gyakran emlegetik Ariszakaként ezt a modellt is. A 38-as típust használták a japán katonák az I. világháború, a második kínai-japán háború (1937-1945) illetve a II. világháború alatt is. A Golden Kamuy-ban legtöbbször egyszerűen szanpacsi-sikinek (三八式) hívják ezt a puskát. Azonban nem ez az egyetlen anime, amiben a 38-as megjelenik, a Sódzso Súmacu Rjokóban (少女終末旅行, A lányok végső utazása) az egyik főhős, Júri keze ügyében is állandóan ott van az említett fegyver:

A Golden Kamuy-ban is említésre kerül a lőtávolság. Természetesen ismét Ogata foglalkozik vele, aki az időközben megszerzett 38-as típussal a kezében villantja meg szaktudását a 114. fejezetben Szugimotonak:

„Sz.: Szono szaisin-siki no sódzsú va ore ga kikjú noru toki ni Daisicsi-sidan kara ubaitotta jacu dzsan. Kaesze jo.

O.: Kore va szanpacsi-siki hoheidzsú da. Kono hjósijaku o miro. Niszen-jonbjaku métoru made memori ga aru na? Omae no szandzsúnen-siki va niszen métoru made…”

„Sz.: Hé, az nem a legújabb puskamodell, amit a 7. Hadosztálytól nyúltam le, mikor elkötöttük a léghajót? Add szépen vissza.

O.: Ez egy 38-as típusú gyalogsági puska. Vess egy pillantást erre az irányzékra. A fokok egészen kétezer-négyszáz méterig mennek, látod? A te régi 30-asodon csak kétezerig voltak...”

A puska részletesebb bemutatásához nézzük újra az Elfnet írását!

„Meglepő módon a 38-as típus nehezebb XIX. századi elődjénél: e fegyver tömege 4,19 kg, hossza 1275 mm (800 mm-es csővel), szemben a 30-as típus 3,95 kg-os tömegével, 1280 mm-es hosszával és 797 mm-es csőhosszával. Technikailag a 38-as típus a 30-as típus leegyszerűsített változata, de a változtatások olyan mélyrehatóak, hogy a kész típus már egyáltalán nem emlékeztet elődjére (kivétel az átemelt fa házat).

Érdekes, hogy a Murata ismétlőpuskát váltó 30-as típussal szembeni egyik fontos kritika az Ariszaka által tervezett, gyenge 6,5 mm-es lőszert érte, ezért a japánok szinte azonnal megkezdték egy erősebb, 7,7 mm-es töltény tervezését, de mivel a fejlesztés rendkívüli mértékben elhúzódott, ezért csak a 38-as típus utódjánál, a 99-es puskánál alkalmazták. A hosszú cső és a relatív kis kaliberű töltény miatt a 38-as típus elsütése gyakorlatilag nem hoz létre torkolattüzet, ami ideális mesterlövész-puskává teszi.

A 38-as típus technikailag ugyanazt a töltényt tüzelte, mint a 30-as típus (a félperemes, 6,5x50 mm-es Ariszaka-t), de a korábbi gömbölyű hegyű töltényt hegyes, ún. spitzer töltényre cserélték és kisebb tömege ellenére növelték a lőpor mennyiségét, ezáltal nőtt a fegyver torkolati sebessége és pontossága.”

A lőszereket a Golden Kamuy mangában is kiemelik, az alábbi oldalon kitérnek a fent említett gömbölyű és spitzer töltényekre is. Egyik kedvenc mozzanatom az alábbi, mikor Ogata nem engedi, hogy Szugimoto kivegye a kezéből az újdonságnak számító 38-ast, melyet dezertálása idején rendszeresítettek a katonaságban, így csak utólag jut hozzá. Ahogy a fentebbi mangapanelen is olvasható, az új puskamodellt nem tudatosan, ám valóban Szugimoto szerezte, de valljuk be… Ogatának igaza van:

„O.: Kono dzsú kara szaijó szareta szentódan no szanpacsi-siki dzsippó nara niszen-jonbjaku métoru szaki ni made tama ga todoku…

Sz.: Dakara nan da jo.

O.: Omae ga cukattemo buta ni sindzsutte koto da.

„O.: Ez a puska 38-as típusú hegyes fejű lőszereket használ, amelyek kétezer-négyszáz méterig is eljutnak…

Sz.: Mire akarsz kilyukadni?!

O.: Arra, hogy nagy kár lenne* nálad hagyni ezt a puskát.”

Az Elfnet cikkével zárnám soraimat. Japánban ez „a fegyver jelentős példányszámban készült: 1923-ig több, mint 2 millió 38-as típusú ismétlőpuska készült el. (…) Mindössze két hátrányos tulajdonsággal rendelkezett: korai rendszeresítése miatt a két világháború között, de különösen a második világháború alatt már túlságosan nagynak és nehéznek számított, emellett 6,5 mm-es töltényét nem tartották kellően erősnek. Az Ariszaka töltény valóban gyengébb volt más országok kortárs töltényeinél, 1000 méteren túl már elvesztve az erejét, ugyanakkor a legtöbb összecsapás 500 m-nél kisebb távolságon zajlott le, ahol a 6,5 mm-es töltény megfelelően teljesített, miközben kisebb hátrarúgást és torkolattüzet produkált. (…) A 38-as típus hosszú szolgálati ideje ellenére még a második világháborúban is megfelelőnek bizonyult, könnyű használata és tartóssága miatt (nagy mérete ellenére) általános megbecsülés övezte.”

what are your thoughts on tanigaki’s death? i feel like it was largely unnecessary and added in just for shock value. especially because he was just… standing there. and then he wasn’t. it feels like a loose end somehow.

Don’t worry,

...the scene of his ‘resurrection’ was so underwelming it’s okay if you forgot it.

But, if it’s okay for you, I want to use this ask to catch the change to talk a little about Tanigaki.

Now... this is not a ‘let’s praise Noda’ post, so if the idea I might be displeased with how he handled Tanigaki bother you, I’ll recommend quitting reading here.

So, Tanigaki.

I’ve seen many complain about how Ogata’s arc was handled, about how Koito and Tsukishima’s arcs were handled, about how Hijikata’s arc was handled, about how Sugimoto and Asirpa’s arcs were handled... but few talk about Tanigaki.

People who use to hang around my blog know he has been one of my fave characters.

Why?

Because Noda in the beginning tied to him a lot of interesting themes and ideas.

Tanigaki is a man who decided to avenge his sister... and in the process he discovered his wish for revenge was misplaced and lost his mother as well. He was ashamed of his mistake and couldn’t find the guts to go back home, sohe let himself be persuaded by Tsurumi’s honey laced words to remain in Hokkaido and support him.

Tanigaki is persuaded to be very righteous and, as a result, looks down on others.

He looks down on Nihei (and his father) because he uses an old rifle, only to learn to admire him and his philosophy, he looks down to the rebel group for betraying Tsurumi... but he basically doesn’t want to go back to the 7th and, fundamentally deserts. He uses Asirpa as a human shield claiming she’s involved in the gold hunt and therefore can’t possibly be innocent... although, unknown to him she saved his life and will do it again. She believes to be righteous... but wanted to shoot Kenkichi in the back. He needed Cikapasi to persuade him to save Inkarmat when she was threatened by more than one man.

So Tanigaki has plenty of flaws... but exactly for this and because he doesn’t mean back, he had an enormous potential for growth.

As this wasn’t all he inherited Nihei’s phylosophy of the single shot, which might be applied in real life as well, ‘you don’t have a countless number of choices/options, so you’ll better act as if you don’t have countless chances but if you screw up things, you lose, weight carefully your options, decide and act with confidence in your choice on which you’ll bet everything you got.

It’s... a lot for a character who seemed to be a simple side character.

And Noda seemed to plan to capitalize on all this.

Tanigaki grows, he learns to look up at Nihei, he starts applying his phylosophy to his life. Although at first he’d only like to send Cikapasi back, he then starts caring about him, in order to not involve Inkarmat and Cikapasi in the Anehata mess he escapes alone and doesn’t try to attack the Ainu but tries to discuss things pacifically.

Although his quest to bring Asirpa back to Huci was also a way to stall going back home and facing his father, the fact he connected Huci to his mother seems to hint he now is more prone to face the fact it was also his actions who hurt her.

He prays for Nihei the way he wasn’t able to do for the Russian soldiers he killed.

I mean... you can smell growth, character arc, evolution, development.

The complicate relation with Inkarmat, that we know is using him and lying to him but is a complicate person herself who’s starting to grow feelings for him and for whom you can smell a character arc as well because she wants to get free of her Wilk-obsession and is starting to think her predictions aren’t fixed in stones, the fact that Kiroranke saves them both, which would put Tanigaki into the position of owning to Kiro... and then the mess that’s Abashiri, Inkarmat getting wounded and Tanigaki... leaving her in Tsurumi’s hands to chase after Asirpa because he wants to return her to Huci while Sugimoto’s first words are he’ll murder Kiro and Ogata...

There’s SO MUCH POTENTIAL!

And then... it ends.

Tanigaki attacks Kiroranke with the clear intention to avenge Inkarmat, whom Kiroranke stabbed by mistake (he threatened her with his knife yes, but she caused him to fall while holding such knife, ending up on stabbing her by mistake).

Tanigaki didn’t talk things over with him, in the same way as he didn’t want to talk things with Kenkichi, even though he owned his life to Kiroranke. And Sofia has tossed in, not many chapters before that who kills a tiger (Kiro’s real name means tiger) lives a life of misfortune.

Tanigaki has no regrets for being part of those who murdered Kiroranke.

At this point if te message of what happened to Kenkichi was that it was wrong to leave behind people to pursue revenge and people often only had one single shoot in life... well, I expected things would turn sour for Tanigaki.

Because he had done the same he did with Kenkichi, he left behind someone (Inkarmat) to pursue revenge against someone who wasn’t exactly a brutal murderer.

But... no, this wasn’t the case.

Cikapasi leaves his found family to form another of his own with Enonoka (at least this is the implication even though Cikapasi is around 9 and I didn’t really like the idea but I guess Noda was testing how people would react to SugiRipa with him) and Tanigaki leaves to him Nihei’s rifle, but it’s not really something that looks like a loss for Tanigaki.

As Cikapasi is out of the way Tsurumi can’t use him to blackmail Tanigaki who doesn’t even need Nihei’s rifle.

Noda said he even believes it’s better if Tanigaki and Cikapasi never met again without clearing up why.

Cikapasi is just left out of the story so Tanigaki can start a family with Inkarmat who, not only survived but was pregnant and her baby survived and she’s about to have Tanigaki’s baby.

We might think Tanigaki will now be called upon his behaviour toward the 7th, which he left and came back ot it at his own convenience and then plans to desert again under the ‘I’m a Matagi not a private first class’ excuse.

I mean, Tsurumi this time makes clear he can’t come and go as it pleases, threatening to hurt Inkarmat and his about to be born child if he doesn’t murder Sugimoto... but overall Tanigaki has it easy.

He doesn’t get brutally beaten up like Ariko was, nor he’s guarded by someone.He’s left free to wander ON HIS OWN.

Tanigaki claims he can’t kill someone in cold blood but, more importantly, that he doesn’t believe Sugimoto can be killed and if he were to do so (completely forgetting Sugimoto is another person who saved his life) Asirpa would be griefstriken and Hucimight not be happy at getting her back in such state... completely forgetting Huci won’t get her back, because Tsurumi has made clear, not much ago, he planned to trap Asirpa.

He considers pretend to search for Asirpa, but then decides he’ll try to go and see Inkarmat, and, since Inkarmat is smart, set up things so that he could find her. Then thanks to Ienaga’s sacrifice (forwhom Ienagawill get no thanks from Tanigaki), they escape from Tsukishima (whose attention Tanigaki attracted) and thanks to Koito who stops Tsukishima, neither him not Inkarmat or Huci or someone else gets killed.

Now, okay, Tanigaki too did something during the escape, but it was made clear without Ienaga and Koito they wouldn’t make it.

In short Tanigaki got his happy ending with Inkarmat and his baby more thanks to others than to himself. He didn’t get it for something he had learnt through his character arc, it’s a happy ending he didn’t deserve because it’s not like he learnt to avoid his past mistakes or repented for them. And all this works fine to keep him out of the main plot without affecting it in the slightest while what had happened ipreviously is never discussed.

Tanigaki has killed Kiroranke out of misplaced revenge and somehow this became a good thing. He never learn Kiro didn’t mean to harm Inkamart. All the theme about feeling guilt when you kill someone?

Never mind it, Ogata was right, if you believe you’ve a good reason for it, you won’t feel guilty at all.

But then Noda decides Tanigaki has to be part of the final chapter his role being ‘Asirpa-catcher’. In fact Noda makes sure Asirpa almost falls off a bridge so Tanigaki can catch her and then, after pushing him off the train so he won’t be involved in the action, at the end of the train ride, he has him came back as if nothing was wrong and has Sugimoto toss Asirpa to him so he can catch her again.

Oh, we might add his supposed death gave Asirpa further trauma but really, I think without it she would have had trauma enough.

And that’s all he does, a role cut for him so he can be around for the final arc.

We don’t see him retuning Asirpa to Huci, we don’t see him confronting with his father and telling him how Fumi died as Kenkichi asked him to do so long ago. We just learn he moved in Ani with Inkarmat and had15 kids but, differently from Nihei who had 1 male son and 14 girls, he had 14 boys and 1 girl.

And that’s it.

A character that started so promising because he carried forward so many interesting themes ends up not learning anything, not solving anything but just getting a happy ending because he’s lucky and Tsurumi didn’t shoot him down when he made clear he wanted to leave the 7th, he didn’t lose Inkarmat and his child when he left them behind, he was helped by Ienaga and Koito when Tsukishima tried killing him and ultimately Tsurumi even messed up in shooting him because it didn’t harm him at all.

It’s not that I wanted a sad ending for Tanigaki, he was one of my fave characters, I wanted a happy ending for him... but one he earned by learning or correcting his mistakes or by fighting for it. Not because everything went in his way despite his mistakes.

So for me it’s a bit more than Tanigaki’s supposed death than then wasn’t a death was unnecessary. His whole role (and Inkarmat’s) post Karafuto felt unnecessary, just a way to give him a happy ending, but not supported by themes or character growth.

If Tsurumi has killed Tanigaki in Karafuto and Inkarmat had died due to her wound nothing would have changed.

Tsukishima and Koito could have had their confrontation in another circumstance... or not at all, since in the end they’ll just follow Tsurumi and won’t go against him.

As for the Asirpa catching thing, Noda could have avoided having her fall the first time and, for the second, Shiraishi might have stolen Nagakura’s horse and caught Asirpa himself. No need for Tanigaki at all.

And instead I wanted us to need Tanigaki, the same way we needed him through the previous arcs. I wanted him to matter and I wanted him to go through his story be one with a happy or a sad ending, through his own power and actions.

But after Karafuto he became another of those characters that ended up feeling unnecessary to the story.

So well, sorry for the long rant, this is not what you were asking for, but it made me sad to see one of my beloved characters become useless to the plot, the themes tied to him forgotten.

But whatever, that’s the ending we got and, by now there’s nothing we can do about it.

because that would be too many individual posts.

i like the idea that usami could be a prettyboy that people around him love if not for his feral nature and shit personality

boutarou charm point: letting his long hair fall onto your body in unpleasant ways

we really really need more characters like sofia. big and not beautiful in the face and cool. big mom from one piece is big and not beautiful in the face but she's not cool. she's cringe.

if i ever suffer a grievous life-altering injury i hope it at least makes my character design more interesting like with tsurumi

kiroranke's wife and sons only got drawn once but that panel got copied and pasted like 3 times. his family has an entry in the golden kamuy fanbook and it's yet another copypaste of the same panel.

hijikata toshizou is always dealing fatal wounds to the abdomen. they're gonna die horribly, you know?

otonoshin's recurring shakashaka and nagakura's recurring watata are not that different. they should get along

kikuta mokutarou's name is probably mokutarou because moku means wood and his face looks like it was carved from wood. (checks the kanji) 杢 is the moku in his name. i thought it would just be 木, the usual kanji for wood, also pronounced moku, but 杢 apparently means woodworker, so that makes even more sense.

i love tsukishima so much. i'll never get tired of him. sometimes you just need to spend a whole lot of time thinking about a really unhappy little guy.

another thing the official translation did wrong is that they didn't let us know when koito was adding an extra A to the end of tsukishima's name. it's a habit of his to say "tsukishimaa!" and sometimes, he even says "tsukishimaaa!" that's a charm point, dammit! he's a whiny bitch! include that! EH scans included that. (raises 100th glass to EH scans)

probably a lot of ogata's attitude toward guns, starting from childhood, is like, "this makes killing so easy. if it's this easy, it can't be that wrong." and that attitude, combined with certain external factors in his life and what some might call a clear case of the dark triad, slowly ferments into the ogata we have today. that's a big part of why he can kill people without remorse: because it's so easy... and because no one is close enough to him to make him question his own viewpoints.

it was the nikaidou twin with the leg wraps who hit sugimoto in the face with the rifle. i noticed during the nikaidous' first appearance that one was wearing leg wraps and one was wearing the leg guards that are not wraps, so i was going to use that to differentiate them and figure out if it was youhei or kouhei who hit sugimoto in the face with the rifle, which sugimoto himself wasn't sure about. and then i'd sound real smart. but by the time youhei got killed, it seems he and kouhei had taken their differential leg coverings off. even though i went to the trouble of remembering about the leg wraps for the duration of several chapters.

reading the raws is enlightening because japanese only uses punctuation sparingly (japanese doesn't Need punctuation in the first place) so when there is punctuation included, it's there with a strong purpose. like the first time nihei tetsuzou just shouts out "BONER!" as an exclamation, there's a rare exclamation point and it made me laugh

golden kamuy is good for your mental health because it exposes you to scenarios like seeing nihei tetsuzou's detailed face saying, "My boner is raging out of control," and you get to experience the resulting emotions in a safe, controlled situation. (the emotions involved vary from person to person.)

it's my 4th read and i only just noticed that the stand-in fake nopperabou has had his tongue cut off… i mean, it makes sense given how he behaves (no words), but yeah, it's visibly apparent the first time he screams. never looked in there before.

i haven't looked at much kirakado fanart yet but it's occurring to me that there must be a scenario where kirawus is like "i can't believe i'm letting this guy rummage around in MY asshole…!"

when tsurumi was hasegawa, he liked big guns enough to have a machine gun hidden in his big camera, but when the big gun was being fired right next to him, he had a perfectly blank face instead of tsurumi's usual look of orgasmic bliss. that must be something he developed during his later military service and time on the battlefield.

when koito picks up tanigaki's gun and it's got a grenade trap under it… tsukishima protects koito by grabbing his head, by the face, with his big mitten. head. face. mitten. i had forgotten about that particular action. i really like the mitten to the face come here boy it's gonna explode. and then tsukishima gets his hat knocked off again :(

the kanji for sugimoto SAichi, uSAmi tokishige, and SAdo island (tsukishima's birthplace) are all the same SA. it's 佐. just a coincidence. 佐 means help.

the reason boutarou knocked shiraishi out of the way and took 3 bullets for him is because moments earlier, he recognized that he had finally taken a fatal amount of damage, and shiraishi was basically the only remaining person who could tell the world about him, as the pitiful remaining fragments of his dream.

i was wondering how commander koito's satsuma dialect would play into his communication as a big boss military man, like maybe some subordinates from different regions could have trouble understanding his commands? but in chapter 291/292 raws you can see that every single thing he yells is in kanji, no particles, no grammar. that must be the navy standard. so you don't really have to worry about dialect if you're not stringing any sentences together.

when you find a work that really strikes you, i think it's very important that you make sure that you are picking up what the author is putting down before you start engaging in fandom. sometimes it'll take more than one read or watch for that to happen. otherwise intra-fandom memes and headcanons could poison your mind with foolish misconceptions.
