"Anyway, here's your birthday gift! ...Oh, my check came in from my YouTube videos! It wasn't as much as usual, but it was enough to get you a gift. Ta-da! It's a mangaka hoodie! "Hey Keiko. ...Are you quite finished? ...You know, if you're going to act like this, then I'll just leave. I don't have to stand here and be ridiculed for my life choices. ...Whatever. Anyway, here's your birthday gift. ...Yes, it's a drawing tablet, one of the most expensive ones on the market, FYI. The guy I ordered it from said this would help with artists who draw digitally. ...Look, if you don't want it, I can always return it and get my money back. ...What can I say? Video games are my bread and butter and they earn me money."

It was evening when Kaoru was informed by Yuriko that a package had arrived for her. Groaning, the birthday girl ceased her interactions on her computer and headed out to the living room, where her sister, Kanra, had already brought it into the house. All women were a bit surprised by how large the box, in question, was.

"Did you order something again, Kaoru?" Kanra asked.

"If you did, I sincerely hope it wasn't more coffee," Yuriko stated, looking at her eldest daughter with a slight frown. "If it is, I am not making room in the kitchen for it."

"I didn't order anything." Kaoru stated, frowning at the accusation thrown her way.

"Is it a birthday gift then?" Kanra asked.

"Must be." Kaoru answered as she grabbed a pair of scissors from a nearby shelf and started tearing the tape off the top of the box. With her sister's help, she opened the box and looked inside, along with the rest of her family. To say that everyone was shocked at what was inside.

Lying on its stomach, currently turned off was, what seemed to be, a mechanical wolf. It made no movements, even as all six eyes were currently locked on it.

"...What is that?" Yuriko asked, still looking at it.

"It... it looks like a... wolf drone." Kaoru answered.

"A... wolf drone..." Yuriko repeated.

"Yeah."

"...Kaoru, are you sure you didn't order something off the Internet by mistake?" Kanra asked, skeptical

"I didn't order anything! I'm pretty sure I would have known if I'd order a robot wolf."

"I don't know about that," Kanra said, looking at her sister. "You do a lot of strange things when you go days without sleep."

"Listen you..."

"Enough." Yuriko said, not in the mood for a fight. "The main thing is... what do we do with this... thing?"

Kaoru, looking at the still powered-down wolf, looked around for something to turn it on. Did she need instructions or something? Was there an app for it? After a minute of searching, she discovered a large red button on the creature's back. Curiosity getting the better of her, she pressed it. All of a sudden, the creature's eyes suddenly popped open, alerting the three females, who instinctively took a step back.

The creature, now turned on, stood up off its stomach and onto its four legs, giving the women a full gander at it.

The creature looked around, moving its head mechanically. It soon locked eyes with the three women before staring at them for a moment. It then moved out of the box and towards the women. Sensing danger, the matriarch of the household moved in front of her daughters and pulled a knife from her back pocket, prepared to dismantle this... abomination.

But suddenly, the machine stopped in front of the women and sat down on its posterior, its robot tail wagging back and forth. A smile appeared on its "face", before a mechanical "bark" was heard from it. The women continued staring at it, still cautious, though slightly more at ease, since it didn't seem dangerous.

While they were dealing with the robot, an email appeared on Kaoru's computer in her room, which was titled 'Untitled'. It was still unopened, but it read:

'Did you receive my gift? I won him in a video game tournament a week ago. I would have kept it, but I value my privacy, so I figured you'd like him. He's called 'IBO-K9', but you can call him what you want. Enjoy. ...And happy birthday, I guess.

P.S. Don't forget we have a team battle on DOTA 2 this weekend. Try not to miss this one. I'd rather not see your rankings go down again.'

“Oh, who's a good boy? You are! Yes, you are!” Kaoru praised, petting the mechanical dog's head. “Hm? What to name you? Oh, I know! How about Sirius? You like that dont you, boy?”

The now newly named Sirius barked happy to be receiving affection from his mistress. Kanra seeing that he wasn't a danger walked over and began to gently pet him as well. 

“You two…” Yuriko sighed pinching the bridge of her nose as she watched her daughters pet the mechanical beast. “Okay fine we have a dog now but If you didn't get him Kaoru who did?”

“Uhhhh… not sure but look he’s so cute!” Kaoru cooed turning back to pet Sirius. 

“Haku! Look!” Kanra exclaimed to her pet cat. Haku having come from upstairs to see what was all the noise cautiously approached Sirius and gave a few hesitant sniffs before rubbing and purring against his legs.   

“Well then I guess welcome to the family Sirius.” Yuriko reached over to scratch his head. “You’ll fit right in.”

Dear fucker Nikki (fanfiction)

A/N: This little letter was born out of nowhere and will probably give you a toothache but it needed to get out. Plus it was Nikki's birthday yestarday, so why not? A huge thanks to @glamourizedcocaine for their wonderful handwriting <3

Dear Nikki,

you are probably wondering who the fuck I am but don’t bother because I don’t exist. Well, I should say I don’t exist yet but I will. See, I’m Nikki from 2023 your 65 years old version and as you can see we didn’t lose our love for making things as complicated and dramatic as we can.

Let’s start with the big question: how in the hell did we get to 65 years old? I’m still wondering about it myself so I can only give you my honest opinion : we pulled our heads out of our ass and someone up there took mercy on us. Does this answer satisfy you? Probably not, but I’m here to explain.

Right now it’s December 11 1987 for you. You are all alone in your Van Nuys house, shooting up under a Christmas tree and wondering why nobody loves you or why did your family abandon you. “Why does living feel so draining?” you used to say or I should say I used to say but I prefer referring to you as a separate being. Loneliness is eating you alive as much as your addiction is destroying your life piece by piece, you know that but you are too scared to admit it. You need help but you don’t know how to ask for it.

Second question: why are you writing to me, your past self? I could say it’s because I’m an egocentric bastard or because I want to leave something to this world but I’d be lying. The simplest answer is that I felt the need to. 

The more complex one is that we live in a fucked up world, where each day everything seems to fall to pieces and the opioids epidemic seems to take more and more lives. It doesn’t matter how much I try to take action because it never seems enough but if I know something that did help that was the book I wrote about our story so maybe this letter will too.

However deep down I know you can read through my bullshit. Even after all these years I still think I can trick people but I end up looking like a child with a mouth covered in sugar who swears he didn’t eat any candy. I didn’t completely lie when I said I’m doing this to help people but I omitted that I’m one of those people.

“What the fuck dude, you just told me we get to be 65 and now you tell me we are still need help?”  

Well, everyone needs a little comfort sometimes even when you know all the tricks to take care of your mental health. I might be an old man but you still live in me, just like the little Nikki who has been hurted by everyone, simply some days I can hear your voices more loudly than others. I know the symptoms all too well : racing heart, general tiredness, the urge to fuck everything up, emotions all over the place. 

So what do I do? Anything you wouldn’t do: allowing myself to feel the emotions instead of bottling them up, relaxing, distract myself and writing this letter. Knowing who I was and how far I’ve come, getting back in contact with you gives me hope for two reasons : reminds me I don’t want to get back to that and empowers me to heal. I thought nobody was there to comfort me so I’m letting myself from the future do it because sometimes it’s easier to be kinder to our younger versions even if they were a piece of work like you.

You’re worth it, just like I am. Even when the world feels like collapsing on itself, we are still worth it. We were worth it when I was you, a junkie, and we are when I’m just an old man playing bass. I just need to repeat it over and over until it becomes a part of me since the human minds are incredibly forgetful when it comes to their importance.

I want to leave you with hope, the same one that helps me going through all the hard times in my life. We made it, we finally got the family we always wanted : Gunner, Storm,  Decker, Frankie and Ruby are all different ages and we love them with our whole heart. Ruby is only 3 now and she gets to receive everything we didn’t, especially since we are more mature compared to the others. I hope I’m a good enough father for them but sure I tried and keep trying my best. What matters is that it’s possible to break the abuse cycle and we are the living proof. 

The band it’s still going after 40 years and after a brief pause we are still touring. So many teenagers love Motley Crue now because they made a movie about us, which allowed me  to tell your story and show people there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you Nikki for not giving up on us and coming back that night. Thank you for allowing me to blurt my feelings out in this letter on my birthday, while I’m hidden in my home’s studio while I get to roll a tear and move on. Thanks to all the other Nikki(s) who fell down and got right up because that’s what we do. And lastly thanks to myself for keeping fighting and making sure that future Nikki can enjoy his old age with a lovely family and badass fans.

It will get better for you and for me.

Best of 2023 TV Shows #12: That 90s Show (NETFLIX)*

Nice to know 4 years ago when 90s nostalgia began the reboot wave was also in full swing. So it makes sense that this years runner up for best new show cashes in on both aspects.

Returning to a basement in southern Wisconsin 15 years after a group of 6 owned the place.

July 1995, Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti arrive to visit his parents for the Fourth of July weekend. In tow is their own daughter the aptly named Leia.

While bored Leia shoots hoops and ends up connecting with the current occupant of her mom’s former room Gwen Runck.

Befriending her she would also come to know her half brother Nate and a new circle of friends.

Nate’s other half Nikki, who more than makes up for his shortcomings.

Ozzie who shows his chops with tech and has more than his fair share of moments.

And Jay Kelso son of Michael and surprisingly Jackie Burkhart who have divorced twice within 15 years. A clever combo of his mom’s brains and dad’s charm.

When Leia ends up staying with Red and Kitty for the summer 10 weeks of 90s style 70s show mishaps would follow suit.

Including Gwen and Nate’s mom Sherri who takes Bobs spot as the persistent neighbor that ends up connecting with Fez.

Bob himself joining Leias 15th birthday.

And even Leo who clues the new gang in on a 90s family classic.

What nostalgia props up is supported by a rich storyline that sees Ozzie bond with Kitty, Leia grow close with Jay, and a new generation of circle action in the basement.

It may be linked to its past but does forge its own way forward while setting things up for an interesting future.

1996 sure has its moments including a possible trip to New Orleans for Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXI.

Let’s see if it’ll take them.

She was born in Santo Domingo. At an early age, she decided to become an actress. As a young child, she would reenact telenovelas for her family. She was discovered by a modeling scout while working in a convenience store at the age of 15, and was offered a small part in a soda commercial. Later, she decided to pursue acting seriously and studied at the Actor's Workshop in New York City under Flo Greenberg.

She is a Dominican actress. Her credits include the roles of Maya Herrera in the NBC series Heroes, Alex in the HBO series Entourage, and Blanca during the last season of the HBO crime drama The Sopranos on television. Her film roles include Alex Guerrero in She Hate Me and Callisto in the feature film X-Men: The Last Stand. She portrayed Rosie Falta on Lifetime's Devious Maids from June 2013, until its cancellation in 2016. In July 2017, Ramirez joined the hit ABC series Once Upon a Time for its softly-rebooted seventh season in a starring role as Cinderella. In 2023, she began the starring role of Captain Nikki Batista in the Fox crime drama Alert: Missing Persons Unit.
