18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
warnings: Flynn freaks out a little, bats, ghosts
Humming to myself, I strung up the garland above the card catalog. Jenkins watched me carefully from the other side of the table.
“I really don’t see the need…” he started. I sighed and looked at him over my shoulder.
“not this again Jenkins.” I groaned. “There’s no need. Just a want. And the want is to be festive.” I turned on the chair and looked at him. “So I hang the bats and everyone gets in the Halloween spirit. And you keep your mouth shut.” Jenkins sighed before going back to his book. The chair wobbled below me. Rolling my eyes, I went to turn back to the garland when the chair tilted to the side. I cried out as I started to fall. Jenkins looked up at the noise. I fell backwards and yelped as I felt a strong body behind me rather than the floor. Opening my eyes, I looked over my shoulder to see Flynn holding me up with smile. “Thanks!” I chirped as he helped me back to my feet on the ground.
“Anytime.” He kissed my cheek before walking around the table to flip through a book Jenkins had put down. I shared a look with Jenkins at Flynn’s obliviousness. “What were you doing up there anyway?”
“hanging Halloween decorations.” I said with a smile. I climbed back on the chair and continued hanging the garland. Flynn hummed before striking up a conversation with Jenkins that I tuned out. “And done!” I exclaimed as I tied off the end of the garland. Flynn walked over and helped me down from the chair.
“Looks….” Flynn broke off as he finally looked at the garland. “Bats.” He whimpered. Looking over at me, Flynn gave me an uneasy smile. “It’s bats.” I nodded.
“it’s freaking bats!” I exclaimed. Flynn nodded slowly. His eyes widened slightly. “Everything ok Flynn?” I asked, turning to gently push some hair out of his face.
“I just…” a few beats before he turned to look at me, eyes slightly wide. “I don’t like bats.” He smiled at me with a weak laugh. “Kind of silly isn’t. Of all the things to be scared of. Bats.” He waved vaguely at the garland. I nodded slowly and went to take them down. “No! It’s fine!” Flynn grabbed my arm and jerked me back slightly.
“But Flynn…” he cut me off with a kiss. I pulled back with a frown. “I can…” Flynn kissed me again. Jenkins made a disgruntled noise behind us and I pulled away. “Jenkins is going to throw something at you if you keep doing that.” Jenkins hummed in agreement as Flynn chuckled.
“I’ll be alright. As long as there aren’t any semi real ghosts hidden somewhere.” I shared a look with Jenkins, knowing that jake had somehow been able to rig something up in the library.
“uh…” I trailed off as Flynn broke away from me to head into the library. “Flynn don’t!” I called as he opened the door to the library.
“don’t…whaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!” Flynn screamed as the ghost flew past. I could hear jake yelling triumphantly in the library as i ran over to hug Flynn.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered as he shook. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” Flynn wrapped his arm around me and stared into the library.
“stone!” He yelled as he stopped shaking. Flynn marched into the library and I trailed behind him, ready to dismantle the rig as Flynn ripped jake a new one.

Unseen | ER John Carter x Reader (ch.2)
Tumblr media
Series Masterlist
Chapter One — Chapter Three
Pairings: John Carter x Fem!Reader
Summary of the chapter: Let’s know a little more about John Carter and Y/N’s relationship in their first years.
Word Count: 2171
Unseen ER | Chapter Two.
Every story starts from the beginning, and the story between John Carter and Y/N L/N had, also, a beginning. Far into their third year as med students, both of them were accepted into the County General teaching program; up until that point, none of them had met. Carter had done more "fancy" specialties like dermatology, while Y/N had been more enthusiastic about trauma situations, which obviously means that she was way more prepared to be in the Emergency rotation than him.
John Carter's medical tug had its origin in the death of his baby brother. God, he missed him. Bobby was John's partner in crime and mischief until he got sick; then John became his brother's confident and rock. Both children were well aware of the pain and uncertainty in their parents' eyes; there was nothing they could do to help Bobby. He was going to die, no matter what the doctors tried. John made up his mind then. He was going to become a doctor.
The Carters were old money in Chicago. They had different companies and foundations, and although they understood the point of helping those with fewer resources, the truth is that apart from giving them money, they didn't do much. After Bobby's death, John's parents suffocated in their grief, ignoring his remaining child, who grew up with his grandparents and an open mind. He wanted a change, and he wanted to be part of said change. Of course, the family allowed him to study medicine, although they kept envisioning his future as head of the Carter company without asking about his opinion. He had no voice.
Although John grew up surrounded by money and fancy items, he had principles, expectations, and goals. He wanted to be a surgeon. Why? Well, it was the most difficult specialty, of course. If he was able to pull out a good performance, if he was able to understand, learn, and use the knowledge to help people from the darkness of death, then he could happily go to his family and say: "My work as a doctor is more useful than being in the company; give it to Chase, he will do just fine."
What John didn't expect was the fact that working in the ER was more exciting, electrifying, and rewarding. He fell in love with the rush, the quiet, the work against the clock, the delivery of babies in taxis… Yeah, even the complaints weren't so bad after a few hours. He loved it; and he could totally understand why Y/N had always that bursting and contagious energy inside her body, glowing eyes, and determined stance– she lived for those moments in the ER.
Y/N had fit in perfectly with Doctor Mark Greene on the first night of their shift together. They worked together as if they had always done it. She didn't hesitate. She didn't vomit. She was home.
John, on the other hand, felt like a disaster. Doctor Peter Benton seemed to despise him and to enjoy torturing him, seeing him fail. Because he did fail. He hesitated. He vomited. He felt unworthy to be a doctor and that echoed in his mind just like the condescending affirmations of his grandmother.
Just in the middle of his first night, a shot wound came into trauma, and although he wanted to help… well, up until this point he had just specialized in simple things. John felt dizzy and nauseous, and Benton just dismissed him with an "I don't need you anyway" which was fair, but ouch. He went outside, to the cold Chicago air. He crouched with the stethoscope between his hands, pressing it to his forehead, trying to calm his breathing.
John Carter, the failure.
Mark Greene came looking for him. His calm steps echoed like there was nothing else but him and the Emergency entrance. Greene was not like Benton; he looked and was kind. He was interested in the students' improvements, and in the professionals' well-being under his wing in the ER. As he approached John, he kept his distance. He gave him privacy by not looking straight at him, and not invading his personal space.
"I thought I was gonna be sick… I'm sorry." Carter confessed with a sigh.
"Don't ever say you're sorry," Mark advised. "See, there're two kinds of doctors: there's the kind that gets rid of their feelings and the kind that keeps them," he explained as he closed the distance with the student. "If you're going to keep your feelings you're going to get sick from time to time, that's just how it works."
John leaned his head against the wall behind him, feeling the cold concrete clash with the hotness of his skull. Mark Greene, with his green scrubs, round frameless glasses, and his hands behind his back, seemed both strong and kind.
"Keep your head down," he ordered; his voice sterner than before.
John knew that his nausea was easier to die if he did as he was told, but he took his time to comply, undoing his tie. Greene crouched right in front of him. He had been approaching the student as if he was some sort of wounded wild animal in need of help; he was to some extent.
"People come in here and they're sick, dying, and bleeding… and they need our help. Helping them is more important than how we feel." Carter nodded to Greene's words. "But it still a pain in the ass sometimes," he added, wanting to break the solemn tone of the atmosphere between them. Carter broke with a soft breath of a laugh, that kind that fights against the will to cry. "Sometimes I just want to quit and do something else," Greene claimed, and whether it was the truth or a lie, no one could tell. They shared a look, searching for an answer they didn't have. "Why don't you take a few more minutes?"
"Yeah…"
Mark Greene got up and started walking towards the hospital, in slow steps, looking back. "By the way, I was in medical school with Benton. He used to get sick all the time so don't let him give you any crap. Okay? You're gonna be fine."
That talk engraved itself in John Carter's memory with fire. Whenever he felt useless, restless, frustrated, alone… Mark Greene's words echoed in his mind.
Mark Greene was a good teacher.
He was a good doctor.
He was–
Yeah. He was.
He didn't have that talk with Y/N, there was no need for it because she already knew that. Greene could feel and see the fire in her determination to be good to the patients, to help them, to keep her own emotions and feelings, and be empathic but not to the point of ending up suffocated with her own remorse. He talked to her, of course.
"You can't save them all," he said. "You can try; we all do. Yes, sometimes is our fault as doctors because we have not done the proper thing. Yet sometimes it just happens no matter how hard we tried."
"I could've–"
"No," he cut her off, "you couldn't have. All the what-ifs that are running through that head of yours have only one purpose: to make you a better doctor. Don't punish yourself, Y/N; just learn."
Shearing their learnings was something that unified Y/N and Carter during that time. It made them stronger, although it could be quite tense at times.
John Carter was a cutie, which he was well aware of, obviously. He was tall and slim, with perfectly smooth brown hair, lovely doe eyes, and a crocket smile; half adorable and half mischievous. He was fun and witty and kind and smart and– and– Yeah, Y/N fell deep for him. Who could've blamed her? Really? Carter had some sort of magnet that made people like him, whether romantically or platonically, didn't matter.
The first time she asked him out on a date, he stuttered, looked around, and with all the kindness of his heart, said "I don't think we should. I'm… I mean, we're going to be seeing each other here all the time and it would be weird if it doesn't work like– I don't know."
Y/N understood that, and although she felt her face hot with shame, she gave him a big smile and a nod. They didn't talk about it anymore. Of course, she ended up finding out about the crush he had on Susan Lewis. She did not correspond with his feelings, though Y/N was certain it was more about the teacher-student situation than Susan being immune to Carter's charms. Then, the next year (1995), he started something with Harper Tracy, very quietly at first; Y/N only found out when Carter comforted Ross about him sleeping with a student. That was awkward. Y/N had to agree to some extent that it was better not to be caught in the middle of a mess like that one.
She felt like a fool, nonetheless. Y/N avoided Carter for some time, which wasn't that hard as their shifts were opposite most of the time.
They were on their psychiatric rotation when they spoke again.
Carter had been feeling restless lately. He loved surgery, he wanted to become a surgeon, and he knew that the rotation between all the departments in the hospital was required for his final grades. However, his skin crawled with anticipation every time they received a consult call from the ER. Oh, boy, how much he enjoyed going down there, changing the quietness from psychiatric for the healthy noise from the ER… yeah, that was life. Unable to stop himself, he found his emotions mixing and tangling in awful ways, torturing his mind. He needed air and he resourced to go upstairs, to the helicopter's landing space on the roof of the hospital.
This is where he found her.
Y/N was bracing herself on the ledge, her eyes lost in the Chicago skyline that was lighting up as the sun kept hiding for the night, her hair a mess blessed by the wind. She took a long breath; she held it closing her eyes, and then she let go of it. Carter observed how with the air in her lungs, her tension left her body.
"You're not gonna jump, are you?" He tried to joke distastefully. His arms were crossed around his body, trying to keep the warmth.
Y/N gave him a look on top of her shoulder, acknowledged his presence, and turned again to face the city. John took that as an invitation and walked towards the ledge too.
"Hey, there, stranger," he smiled.
"Hi."
The silence felt heavy and suffocating. "It's something wrong?" She shrugged instead of giving him an answer. "Y/N, please. Talk to me. I miss you."
"You do know that I have feelings for you, don't you?" He snorted as if she was just playing a prank. The look of sadness in her eyes made him go pale and open his mouth, looking for an excuse. "Save it. Look, if you don't like me like that I totally get it, Carter. Just– Don't lie to me again."
"I have not lied to you."
"No. You gave me a shitty excuse and you forget." The shadow of recognition flashed through his face. "Yup."
"It's different."
"Oh, pray tell me, how much different it is."
"My relationship with Harper started out of fun. We meant nothing to get out of it. There's no pressure for it to go somewhere."
"And ours does?" She laughed skeptically and hurt.
"Of course!" John burst.
The silence fell upon them once again. Feeling like her heart was shattering, Y/N focused her eyes on a big building away from them; the wind slapping her face with cold indifference. Carter, blushing uncomfortably, danced from one foot to another, feeling colder and colder as he stood leaning on the ledge.
"We have something now. Something big. I trust you. I– I like you very much. But this– this thing, whatever it is, could explode and break and destroy everything in its path if we misstep." John felt his stomach clench. "Think about this. If we start something, it's going to be something big."
"I only asked you out for a coffee, Carter," she spat, looking at him dead in the eyes.
"I know…" he whispered, taken aback. "That would've led into dinner. Another date. Then another. A relationship. Marriage… Just– I'm not ready for something that steady now. I feel that if we start something I'm going to ruin it. Can't we just be friends? Good friends. The best friends the world has ever seen?"
Stupid.
Fuck, so uncomfortably stupid, and yet…
"Yeah," she sighed. "I guess."
While they decided on that and Carter definitely enjoyed the arrangement quite a lot, she hid her suffering for the lonely nights in her small apartment, covered in bed, sobbing against her pillow.
Yeah, stupid.
To be continued…

Prompt: Leverage AU where Harry Wilson is the Noah Wyle character in The Red Line, where he was married to a man of color murdered by the police. Instead of being a rich morally bankrupt lawyer, he’s a relatively powerless divorce lawyer or something. Cue Leverage team to… provide leverage.
Gifs from The Red Line. (Surprisingly, searching ‘the red line’ in the gifs tab pulls up a lot of relevant results, including several of Noah Wyle doing his ‘unsuccessfully trying not to cry’ face. He’s good at the cryface and he should have opportunities to do it on Leverage.)
Edit: I wrote a drabble about this:

So basically, I was sitting around thinking about Carter ( because I definitely didn’t need to be doing something else) and realized that he had never been shot, which is more surprising than you’d think, he is really prone to getting hurt. So I thought, oh I should write a fanfic about him getting shot, but this couldn’t be any regular old fanfic, no it had to happen a few years after he got stabbed, and it had to happen in the same room and it had to be on the same day.

Does anyone still read ER fanfic? I don't even know, but I've been doing an ER rewatch and am in my feels, so if anyone out there is looking for ER fic, please enjoy this one shot of my faves, John Carter/ Jing-Mei Chen.
FYI, I’m still salty they didn’t get together in canon, and it’s been like 20 years.
There was a knock at the door which she ignored. The nurses would come in whether she responded or not.
“Deb? You awake?” It was John.
She looked over her shoulder, and saw how exhausted he looked after his shift in the ER. Dark circles under his eyes and sagging shoulders, but yet here he was to check on her.
Rated G. Hurt/comfort one shot. John Carter/ Jing-Mei Chen. ~700 words.

Ever After
This one-shot is dedicated to Lucy Knight & John Carter from ER.
Tumblr media
The light is too bright, it begins to hurt his eyes.  He shuts them and behind his closed lids, the light appears to subside. He opens them again and takes in his surroundings. A lump forms in his throat as he realizes he’s in a nursery room. The walls are painted a light blue. There is a bookshelf filled with tiny books for tiny hands, a crib in a rich and beautiful dark wood color and he hears…singing? Suddenly, he’s aware of a view of the ocean just outside the nursery. The water is as clear as the sky and he sees steps on the balcony outside that lead to it. The singing grows a bit louder. He follows the voice as it leads him outside, down the steps and onto the beach, its sands white and untouched. He sees no one.
He feels the sun on his face, warm and inviting and closes his eyes, still hearing the lyrics of a lullaby, louder now. “Goodnight, sleep tight, go to sleep little baby.”
That voice. He’d know it anywhere. “Why? Because I disagree with you?” The memory and her face come to him and he opens his eyes.
Suddenly, she’s there, her back to him and facing the ocean. Her blonde hair blows in the light breeze and his eyes fill with tears. He closes them and opens them again. She’s still there.
“Lucy?” he whispers.
She turns to him and, in her arms, she is holding his son. Joshua Makalo Carter. The tears flow freely now and he reaches for him. Lucy places Joshua in his arms and smiles and he continues to sob, holding his son and hugging him and smelling him and having so many questions but doesn’t care to ask them at this moment. Not this moment. For he is holding his son and he just stares at his precious child and just cries.
He wipes his tears and looks at Lucy. He had never forgotten her eyes, crystal blue like the ocean in front of them now. She is looking at him and he says her name again. She raises her hand and flicks a strand of hair away from his face and it’s then that he realizes he has his longer hair again. He feels the ends of it on his neck as she then touches the side of his face. He feels younger.
“W-where am I?” he asks her.
She tilts her head, gives him a sad sort of look. “You’ve died, Carter.”
His breath escapes him and suddenly he remembers. Taking that left turn to get on the highway, seeing bright white lights coming toward him, another vehicle. “Car accident?” he asks her.
She nods. “You died on impact.” He looks at her, a lump forming in his throat as he processes what she has told him. She was always beautiful. He takes a deep and long breath. “I’m sorry.” he blurts out. There it was. Those words would have been the first thing he would have told her had she lived and he held onto them, unspoken, for every day he did.
“It wasn’t your fault.” she says softly. He shakes his head. “It was. I should have listened to you that day and I didnt and my lack of action helped your death and I have held onto that every single day of my life and I’m so sorry Lucy.” He cries. He looks at his son and sways him, cherishing him. He looks back into her blue eyes. “I loved you, you know. I did. I didn’t know it at the time or maybe I did and refused to see it but after losing you…..I knew. I’m sorry. I never found anyone quite like you.”
She takes his hand. “Shh. I’ve been with you every single step of the way. It’s bittersweet knowing that you’re here and knowing what it means. But I’ve been with you, Carter and I love you. Joshua and I, we’ve been waiting for you.”
She leans into him and he kisses the top of her forehead and then his sons. Together, they watch the sun set and he doesn’t think he’s ever been happier.
END.

Dear Chocolate Box Creator Letter 2020
Hi! Thank you for creating something for me! I’m excited to see what you create! :D
General info
I adore tropes, the more ridiculous the better, and really what I love about ridiculous tropes is how it gives the creator an opportunity to explore the characters and their dynamics and motivations. Fun plots are great, but the characters and what the plot reveals about them is what I really love.
I also really love AUs (especially modern/historical AUs) or crossover fusions, and love how much changes and how much doesn’t. But straight up canon stuff is really good too. Really, character focused stuff is what I love most. I do also think canon divergence AUs can be really great, so feel free to play around with canon as well.
Please no smut. Romance is great, but nothing more than kissing/fade to black for the physical stuff.
While I’m a big fan of romantic ships, I also love relationships in general, romantic or not. Just characters being there for each other is great. I love fluff, but more serious/angsty/dramatic stuff is just as good too. :D And unless specifically stated otherwise, I have no problem with characters other than I requested in the story, but I want the requested characters to be a main focus.
None of the relationships I requested in any particular fandom are ones that I wouldn’t want combined with any other in that fandom, so feel free to use or not use any of the relationships requested.
Aside from the no smut request, my other DNWs (also listed on my sign up) are:
explicit gore
violence and injury are fine, but nothing super graphic, generally I would say canon typical violence/gore or less is a good way to go
permanent character death of requested characters
angst without a happy (or at least hopeful) ending
I do tend to like fluffier stuff, but angst is great too, as long as there’s some hope or happiness there by the end.
I hope this helps! I’m including my general prompts below, but feel free to go where the inspiration takes you. Happy writing! :D (Length of prompts is not an indication of my feelings for a fandom. I steal prompts from my previous letters because I’m lazy and those tend to be shorter than newer prompts as I get better at these letters. :D)
Request 1
Fandom: DC Extended Universe
Relationships: Diana Prince/Steve Trevor, Lois Lane & The Justice League, Clark Kent/Lois Lane
Prompts: I’ve split these up by relationship, since they feel a little more separate than the relationships in the other fandoms, but feel free to combine as you want. :)
Diana/Steve Trevor:
I love them so much, and I love how much Steve treats her as an equal. I am here for a full on AU, whether set within the canonverse or something totally different, just so they can have their happy ending. I have seen WW84, and while I had some problems with the ramifications of some of the writing choices (I’m looking at you, mechanic of Steve’s return), I did really like their scenes together. If sticking with a more canonverse setting, I’d be happy with a story set during the first movie, or even 1984, or even bring him forward to the current day movies. (I would love seeing Steve meet Lois and Clark and the League.)
Lois Lane & The Justice League
I would love to see Lois working with the Justice League and using her skills as a reporter to help with their missions. I’d also love to see her dynamic with Alfred, as well as the other members of the League. I think this would be especially interesting set between BvS and Justice League, but also after Clark comes back.
Clark Kent/Lois Lane
I love this ship so much, and especially this version of them. I love how much trust and respect they have for each other from the word go. This version of them is a little quieter and more serious than other iterations and I’m happy with keeping a similar tone to Man of Steel/Batman V Superman, but lighter fare would be great too. We see Clark and Lois investigating stories separately as reporters, but not really together as a team, whether for the Planet or the League or both, and I’d love to see that. I would also love to see them dealing with the aftermath of Justice League and how they come back together after being apart for so long. I have seen all the current movies (although I’m less familiar with Justice League as it wasn’t my favorite, but I remember the big stuff), and am happy to see other characters show up as well if you would like.
Request 2
Fandom: Austenland (2013)
Relationships: Henry Nobley/Jane Hayes
Prompts: I love how this movie is both this beautiful (and hilarious) homage to Jane Austen and those period stories, while being a modern romcom in it’s own right. I love the ways that both Henry and Jane fit the Austen “archetypes”, while also being their own people in our modern world. I absolutely love their chemistry, and would be happy with something set during the movie, such as a missing scene or more character reflection (perhaps on catching feelings for each other?), or something set after the movie. (Like what was her friend’s reaction to walking in and finding them kissing? :D)
Request 3
Fandom: Enola Holmes (2020)
Relationships: Enola Holmes/Viscount “Tewky” Tewksbury, Enola Holmes & Sherlock Holmes
Prompts: I absolutely loved this movie and thought it was so much fun. I don’t typically read first person fanfics, but loved the fourth wall breaking in the movie and would love to see how that translated to a fic. I also really like 3rd person if you don’t want to take on the fourth wall breaking element. I would love to see more of what you think happens after the movie ends, with Enola finding her way, and exploring her friendship and blossoming romance with the Viscount. I would also love to see her interacting more with Sherlock and how their relationship grows  and I loved their take on Sherlock. But I’m also just excited to see what you create!
Request 4
Fandom: Knives Out
Relationships: Benoit Blanc/Marta Cabrera, Harlan Thrombey & Marta Cabrera
Prompts: If you look at my posted stories, you know I’m a fan of Marta/Benoit. It kind of snuck up on me, and I was obsessed earlier this year. There’s just something about them that works so well. I love AUs where Harlan lives or the murder attempt never happened and the three of them met some other way. I also like anything post movie where they work through the aftermath of the movie together. I love Marta and Harlan’s dynamic and would love something exploring their friendship. I love Marta/Benoit being partners, romantically, but also professionally if you want to go that direction. I don’t mind having the Thrombey’s involved, but don’t want them to be the focus. (This goes especially for Ransom. I really don’t want any hint of Marta/Ransom.) I do love both Lieutenant Elliott and Trooper Wagner if you go the more case fic route. I have no problem with vomiting if you want to include Marta’s “condition”, although I would request avoiding any really graphic description of vomit/vomiting.
Request 5
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Relationships: Gaby Teller/Illya Kuryakin, Gaby Teller & Illya Kuryakin & Napoleon Solo
Prompts: Team shenanigans is my favorite. They’re all such interesting characters and I love their dynamic together. I would love something set in the future where they’ve settled more into a routine, or something where they’re still figuring out how to work together as a permanent team.  I also love modern AUs, or anytime Napoleon plays matchmaker. I also love how tender Illya is with Gaby and would love to see them finally get to kiss if you want to include that. I would also love to see something post movie where Gaby and Illya are getting to know each other once it’s known that Gaby is also an agent.
Request 6
Fandom: The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)
Relationships: Marguerite Blakeney/Percy Blakeney
Prompts: I would love anything where Marguerite is helping Percy and the League with their stuff and being all around awesome, but domestic, peaceful fluff is good too. I just love them being partners, whether in their marriage or in other aspects. I haven’t read many full on AUs (not just canon divergence) for this ship, but that could be really interesting too.  I have read the book, if you want to include details from that, but of course, that is not necessary.
Request 7
Fandom: The Librarians
Relationships: Eve Baird/Flynn Carson, Cassandra Cillian & Eve Baird & Ezekiel & Jake Stone & Jenkins
Prompts: I absolutely love Eve/Flynn and how they both started having feelings for each other from the word go. While some of their issues were frustrating (and some of them certainly brought on by Noah Wyle’s schedule), I do like when they work and talk through their problems. I love how they balance each other out, and are both 100% in this ridiculous world of theirs in their own way. With the main show team, I love how they all become a family, and ultimately support and better each other. I also love how they’re all brilliant, but in completely different ways, and how they fill the gaps in each other’s knowledge bases. I also love Jenkins being the Grumpy OneTM, but having a great dynamic with each character. Something case related would be fun, or discovering something cool about the library together, or even just something more low key and domestic in the library after a case or during down time.  I would also love to see more after Eve and Flynn are tethered.
Request 8
Fandom: Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Relationships: Clark Kent/Lois Lane
Prompts: I love anything where Lois and Clark are working together as a team at the Planet or elsewhere, especially with the great banter they can get going, or anything adorable or fluffy. I also love them fighting Tempus, because he’s such a ham. My favorite version of their relationship is post reveal/marriage, but earlier versions of their relationship are great too. I’m just excited to see what you create. :D
Request 9
Fandom: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries
Relationships: Jack Robinson/Phryne Fisher, Elizabeth MacMillan & Phyrne Fisher, Hugh Collins/Dot Williams, Phryne Fisher & Dot Williams, Elizabeth MacMillan & Jack Robinson
Prompts: One of my favorite things about this show is the found family aspect, so whichever relationship you focus on, or end up using, that support and love (romantic, platonic, familial) is what I love about this show and these characters. My favorite ship on the show is Phryne/Jack, which is probably no surprise and I love their chemistry and how they are partners and support each other, even when seemingly at odds. Hugh and Dot are just so adorable, and I love how Dot grows throughout the show and forces Hugh to do his own growing. Phryne’s relationship with Dot is one of my favorites as well, for how she pushes Dot to grow and become so strong and very much her own person. Phryne and Mac is such a great friendship and I love how strong their love for each other is and what they will do to help the other. And Jack and Mac is such a fun friendship as well and I think a really interesting dynamic to explore.
I realize these aren’t really prompts and are just me gushing about the characters, but hopefully that helps with what I like about them. As for something more prompt like, I would love something to do with a case, or Phryne being her glorious self and dragging (but really, they’d all follow her anywhere) someone along with her schemes.

Fandom: Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Relationships: Charles Bingley/Jane Bennet & Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy, Charles Bingley, Jane Bennet
Prompts: I love both of these ships, and would love to see something exploring their dynamic. I am also very happy with the idea of just Charles and Jane being the focus. I  would love to see more of the time between the successful proposals and the wedding, them learning more about each other and strengthening the feelings they already have. Post movie is great too! How are they adapting to being married and all the changes that brings? My love for modern (and other) AUs applies here, although I am also very happy with straight up canon. I have read the book as well if you want to include any details from there, although that’s of course not necessary.

I sat in the chair Jenkins had brought into the annex, knees tucked up to my chest as I looked over the information Cassandra had brought in. The clippings book lay open on her most recent mission. It had been quiet since she got back. Everyone finally had a moment to relax. The pain in my gut made me lean my head against my knees. A soft hand on my back made me breathe out shakily.
“I’m ok.” I said, lifting my head to meet jenkins’ eye. “I’m ok.” He nodded as Flynn came bounding into the room.
“Hello.” He said, smiling at Jenkins and kissing me on the cheek. I gave him a shaky smile as Jenkins withdrew to his section of the table.
“hi.” I whispered as Flynn perched on the arm of the chair. “What’s got you back so soon? Thought you were still looking for the library.” He shrugged as he tried to get me to lean into him. Instead, I winced and got up quickly. Realizing my mistake, I wrapped my arms around myself and hurried off to the bathroom. I could just hear Flynn ask Jenkins what was wrong with me.
“they’ve been in so much pain they’re nauseous.” I heard Jenkins say. I made it to the bathroom and pulled the trash can closer just in case. I inspected my jeans as I sat on the toilet, willing everything to stop. I frowned when I saw a patch of red on my underwear and slowly shuffled my way out of the soiled garments. Opening the door under the sink, I smiled to myself to see the replacement pairs the annex knew I needed.
“thanks.” I whispered to the empty room. After the pain and nausea had passed, I left the bathroom and made my way back. “Sorry.” I muttered as I took up my previous position. Flynn wrapped his arms around me from behind and kissed my head. Jenkins smiled softly at me and left the room.
“I’m going to say it aloud. Since we both know it.” Flynn started. “I don’t have much experience with this. My relationships never really turned this serious or lasted long enough that I…” he cleared his throat awkwardly. I rubbed his hand where it rested on my collarbone. “Jenkins filled me in. Why are you still working here if you are in that much pain? Go home. I would have come to you.”
“everyone else needed me.” I responded. “Jake is checking into something on his own. Ezekiel needs someone to stop him from stealing every priceless artifact. Cassandra…” I trailed off. “Jenkins always needs help cataloging and researching. Eve went off looking for you. And you…” Flynn kissed my head. “Someone had to be here to keep the light burning.”
“we’re going home.” He said softly. “Come on. Jenkins already fixed the door.” I took his hand and stood up slowly. “You’re going to have to help me through your routine and making sure that you feel ok. But I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help.” I nodded as Flynn set the dial and our apartment appeared on the other side of the door.
“thank you.” I muttered as Flynn and I walked through, being forced to bed as soon as we closed the door. Flynn kissed me softly again before running off to get whatever it was Jenkins had told him would help.

Warnings: smut, threesome, light bondage, swearing, drinking, unprotected sex (wrap it before you tap it kids)
AN: Thanks @illiana-mystery for helping me figure out how to do this one. Story below the cut.
I blinked as I looked at Jake and Flynn tied to the chairs with gags in their mouths. Rushing to help them get out of whatever situation they had gotten themselves into, my mind whirled to life. Impure thoughts continued to run through my head as they bickered on the drive back to the Annex. Sighing, I shook my head and made up my mind.
"You guys want to come back to mine for a night cap?" I asked. Flynn and Jake looked at each other before turning back towards me.
"Why not?" Jake said with a shrug. Flynn nodded.
"After the day that we've had, we definitely deserve it." Flynn agreed. We checked in with Jenkins before filtering out to my car. "So aside from coming to our rescue, how was your day (Y/N)?" I shrugged and caught his eye in the rearview mirror.
"Mainly just helped Jenkins with the research for a bit. Cassie needed some help as well so we worked a bit on whatever it was she was working on." Jake shivered and I knew that he figured it was something to do with magic.
"Must have had you on your toes today." Jake offered. I nodded.
"You two did." I teased. "Jenkins had me monitoring what was going on with the two of you in case something went wrong." Jake and Flynn shared a look.
"Sorry you have to babysit us." Flynn said quickly. "We don't mean..." I waved my hand at him.
"It's fine. I'd much rather go pull you out of trouble than have to run to save Ezekiel from danger." I shrugged as I pulled into my parking spot. The three of us trailed up to my apartment. I pulled three beers out of my fridge. "Make yourselves at home." Flynn nodded and flopped down on my couch. Jake rolled his eyes and sat on the loveseat. I sat down next to Jake and tapped the neck of my bottle with his.
"Bottom's up." Flynn joked as he tipped the bottle back. Jake and I took a sip before settling back against the couch back.
"If I proposed something, how weirded out would the two of you be?" I asked after drinking half the bottle. Jake shrugged and Flynn looked over at me with a smirk.
"Depends on what it is." Jake said. "Maybe we will, maybe we won't." Flynn shrugged and nodded.
"When I walked in on the two of you tied up, I couldn't get it out of my head. Kind of wanna do that in a more...fun...way." I said. Flynn's eyebrows went up and Jake smirked over at me.
"Oh. So that's how you feel about us?" He said. "We were thinking you were trying to keep things in the professionally interested category."
"We thought we'd have to make the first move." Flynn said. I looked between the two and stood up abruptly.
"Come on. Into my room. Now." I started walking through my living room to the bedroom. Flynn and Jake trailed behind me. I started going through my nightstand for two ties and turned back to the boys with a smile on my face when I found them. "Who wants the top and who wants the bottom?" Jake laid down on my bed and smirked at Flynn.
"I'm going with doing the actual fucking." Jake said. Flynn frowned but started to undress. Jake sat up to do the same. I smiled at the two of them and ran the ties through my hands. "What are those for?" I smiled at Jake as he tossed his underwear to the floor.
"I said I had thoughts about the two of you tied up. So I'm tying you up." Jake nodded and looked over his shoulder before laying down again. He put his hands above his head and I stepped up to tie him to the headboard. Running my hands over his biceps, I bit my lip to stop from moaning.
"Fuck Jake." I let out. "You hiding all that beneath those clothes?" Jake chuckled as I ran a hand over his pecs. "Damn." Flynn watched from the side and swallowed. My eyes went wide and I immediately whistled. "Fuck me." I let out. Flynn blushed as I walked over to run my hands down his chest. "You do not disappoint Flynn Carsen. Putting nerds to shame." Flynn chuckled and I helped him kneel on the bed. I sat back on Jake's thighs to gauge the right height for Flynn. I patted his shoulder as I got up to tie his hands behind his back. Flynn tugged on the tie to test how far he could go.
"We're ready whenever you are (Y/N)." Jake said. I nodded and started to strip. Two sets of eyes watched me as I did, making me a bit self-conscious. Flynn's eyes widened and Jake let out a low whistle. I blushed and gave a small bow before climbing onto the bed. I settled myself over Jake and looked over my shoulder at him.
"Anytime anyone wants out, just say so." I said, nerves starting to creep in. Both nodded at me before I sank down on Jake. We both moaned and Flynn smirked at the two of us.
I leaned forward and took Flynn into my mouth. He moaned and leaned back slightly, thrusting into my mouth on accident. I chuckled, making Flynn moan again with the vibrations. I tapped Jake's thigh and he started to thrust into me, drawing another moan out of me. I started to lick along Flynn's length as Jake ground his hips into me. We set a steady rhythm that had the three of us periodically moaning in unison. I felt Flynn twitch in my mouth and sucked hard on his length, taking as much of him as I could before he let out a long moan and came. I shuddered as I reached my climax, letting Flynn slip out of my mouth with a cry. Jake chuckled behind me and thrust hard into me. A few pumps later, he came with a grunt. I slumped forward against Flynn while I caught my breath.
"Wow." I breathed out as I dismounted Jake. He hissed at the feeling and I untied Flynn. I rubbed his wrists as he sat down on the edge of my bed. Running a hand across his shoulders, I smiled as he shuddered. Untying Jake, I made sure to not just rub his wrists but his biceps as well since he had clearly been straining against the tie. "Everyone good?" I asked as Jake sat up. I crawled on the bed between them and put an arm around both their shoulders. Tugging them close, I leaned into both of them.
"All good." Jake confirmed. Flynn nodded.
"I say we do that again. But this time we switch?" Flynn looked over at Jake who nodded.
"You know I need to know how that mouth is." He laughed as he leaned in to kiss my temple. "We most definitely are doing that again."

18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
warnings: swearing
AN: so I’m writing for Jenkins, flynn Carsen and Jacob stone now. In case anyone was wondering
I stormed through the library only to slam the book on the table in front of Jenkins.
“There’s your damn book Jenkins. Now can I please have a week off?” I snapped at the tall man before me. He raised an eyebrow at me before taking the book and walking off. “Jenkins! Dammit. Jenkins!” I called out as I turned to follow the caretaker.
“I wouldn’t today.” I turned in a circle and looked at Flynn.
“and why not?” I snapped. Flynn gave me a look. “Sorry. It’s been a day. Between that book and getting shot at. Not to mention…” I trailed off and Flynn pushed off the card catalog. “I’m pretty exhausted. I need a week off. Jenkins said if I got the book…” I looked over my shoulder. Flynn wrapped his arm around my shoulders and drew me away from the annex.
“he’d let you take the week off.” I nodded, wrapping my arm around Flynn’s waist. Flynn leaned his head against mine. “If Jenkins tries to send you out again, I’ll take it. Or I’ll make Ezekiel take it.” I laughed slightly as Flynn walked us towards the exit.
“and Jenkins will get pissed at you.” I countered. Flynn shrugged.
“what else is new?” He laughed. Smiling at him, I let him usher me into a car.
“you’re full of surprises Flynn carsen.” I laughed. Flynn smiled over at me before driving off. “So where are we going?”
“you want me to tell you? Or do you want to guess?” He looked over at me with a knowing smirk. “Or just enjoy the ride?”
“oh it’s a ride then.” I tried. Flynn laughed.
“Nice try.” He reached over and squeezed my hand. “I’m not saying.” I smiled at him before looking out the window. “So this week off. What do you want to do?”
“thinking of coming with me?” I asked. Flynn snorted.
“not really. Just curious.” He said.
“sleeping. Probably visiting with friends for a bit.” I shrugged. “Maybe find a way to get to a beach for a bit.”
“sounds nice.” I nodded. “I wouldn’t mind meeting you on the beach.” Smiling, I looked back over at Flynn.
“I wouldn’t mind you crashing that part.” I admitted. Flynn smiled at me. “This is nice.”
“thought you’d enjoy it.” I looked out at the scenery that we passed. “You’ll really like this though.” I laughed as the Statue of Liberty came into view. “How does ice cream sound?” Flynn looked over at me, eyebrow quirked up.
“it sounds nice.” I waited until Flynn parked before climbing out of the car. He walked over to the cart that was across the street and came back as I was climbing onto the hood of the car. Flynn looked at me in surprise. “What?”
“Nothing.” He chuckled. “Just didn’t expect you to climb up there.” Waiting until I was seated, Flynn passed the cones over to me before clambering up next to me. I handed his back and leaned back against the windshield. The street lights turned on as the sky darkened. “This is the only place I know in the entire city where you can see the stars clearly.” I turned my head towards Flynn as I ate my ice cream.
“really?” I looked up at the sky again. “I didn’t even realize that.” Flynn hummed. “I guess being in the city so long made me forget that there are pockets where you can see them. Made me forget to look up.” Flynn leaned back and looked over at me.
“that can happen sometimes.” He agreed. We settled into a comfortable silence. Even after we finished our ice cream, we stayed laid out on the hood of the car. “This is Jenkins’ car by the way.” I started laughing as I rolled onto my side to look at Flynn.
“seriously?” I asked, my smile growing as Flynn started to laugh. He nodded.
“yep. Took the keys earlier today.” He rolled onto his side to watch me. Flynn hesitantly reached over and brushed some hair off my forehead. I smiled softly at him before looking up at the stars again.
“we’ll have to keep this place in mind for our next date.” I said softly. My heart raced as I looked back at Flynn. He was opening and closing his mouth quickly and I started to panic. “Unless this isn’t a date. Or you don’t want to go on another date.” Flynn leaned forward and kissed me.
“I definitely want to go on another date with you. Just,” he laughed quietly. “How did you know? I’d been working up the courage to ask you out for weeks.” I blushed.
“I uh I was taking a chance.” I admitted. “I was hoping…then again I guess you were too.” Flynn nodded before kissing me again. I gently cupped his cheek. “You’re one smooth man Flynn carsen.” I teased.
“smooth?” He asked, blushing. “No one has ever called me that before.”
“let me guess. Nerdy, a dork, socially awkward?” I asked. Flynn nodded.
“I used to…” Flynn started. “I used to be a lot of things.” I nodded. “I’m still sort of…” it was my turn to lean forward and kiss him.
“that’s something to discuss on our next date.” I smiled at him. “For now, let’s enjoy the stars.” Flynn nodded before cuddling up next to me to point out the different constellations. He paused in his rambling to look over at me before kissing me and starting his stories again.

warnings: swearing, sword fighting
Walking through the library, I looked up and down the aisles. Biting my lip, I sighed as I paused and leaned against one of the stacks.
“Flynn!” I called out. The sound of a sword fight caught my ears and I turned towards where I heard it coming from. “Flynn!” I smiled as I watched him fighting with Excalibur. He turned towards me and smiled back.
“(Y/N)!” He called as he parried cal. “Give me…one second.” He grunted as he tried to disarm the floating sword.
“Jenkins know you still do this?” I asked as Excalibur floated away. Flynn pulled the tie off his head and started to put it back on as he walked over to me. Putting his hands on my hips, he leaned in to kiss me. I cupped his cheeks and hummed happily.
“no. And I don’t want him to know.” Flynn said with a smile as he pulled away. “Something about using ancient artifacts for the wrong things and tempting fate playing with cal.” He shrugged as he wrapped his arms around me tighter. I smiled at him and laid my head on his shoulder.
“I see. Your secret is safe with me.” I laughed as I leaned up kiss his cheek. Flynn blushed slightly before wrapping his arm around me and starting to walk through the library again. He swung his sword at his side as we walked. “Can you teach me?” I asked suddenly. Flynn looked over at me confused.
“teach you what?” He asked. I smiled at him.
“how to sword fight.” I said. Flynn made a small noise and nodded.
“yeah. I can do that.” He paused and looked around for another sword. “Here. You can use this one.” Turning around he found the umbrella stand of swords that Jenkins kept around for some reason.
“ok.” I took the sword and took up the fighting stance I’ve seen Flynn use time and time again. Putting the tie back around his head, Flynn walked around me and gently tapped my feet to readjust me.
“you’ve done well already from just watching me.” Flynn acknowledged. “You know how to move?” I looked over my shoulder at him and nodded.
“think so.” I said with a smile. Flynn took a step back and I copied the movements I’d seen him make. Flynn regarded me with a smile. With a hand on my back, he leaned over my shoulder to kiss my cheek.
“not bad.” He said as he lined up in front of me. “The rest is just reflex and instinct.” Flynn crossed his sword with mine. “Ready?” I nodded. “I’ll go slow.” I nodded again and Flynn swung his sword. I blocked and moved forward with my own hit. I smiled at Flynn as I realized how easy it was coming to me.
“this isn’t bad.” I said with a smile as we crossed swords again at one point. Flynn smirked at me.
“you remember something I said a while ago? That I would do anything for the librarians?” I nodded and Flynn got a mischievous glint in his eye. “That includes teaching them to protect themselves. In all cases.” Flynn stepped up and started to move faster, his strikes more harsh and less predictable.
“oh shit.” I mumbled as I tried to move as quickly as he was. I stumbled a few times, making Flynn pause. I always waved him off before starting to match him. Flynn crossed swords and leaned into it. Smiling at me, he leaned between the swords to kiss me.
“you’re doing wonderfully for your first lesson.” He whispered against my lips before pulling back and starting the dance again. I paused when the tip of Flynn’s sword appeared under my chin. “And that’s match point.” He said, pulling it away. I sighed and sagged slightly against him.
“that’s more work than I thought I was.” I breathed as Flynn kissed my forehead. Flynn took the sword from me and put both of them away. Wrapping his arm around me, he steered us towards the annex.
“yeah. But it’s eventually worth it. Some of the people we interact with…” Flynn trailed off, looking around at some of the artifacts he brought back. “They are infinitely better with a sword than I am. It’s not something anyone every would have prepared us for out there. Only in the library are there threats like that.” I nodded against him as I wrapped my arm around him.
“lucky for me I have you.” I smiled at him. Flynn nodded with a smile back. “Thank you for teaching me.” He leaned over to kiss me.
“any time.”

Unseen | Dr. John Carter x Reader (Ch. 5)
Tumblr media
Series Masterlist
Chapter Four -- Chapter Six
Pairing: John Carter x Fem!Reader
Chapter summary: Reader and Carter are back in Chicago. They reunite.
Content warning: scars, angst, awful people.
Word count: 2450
Unseen | Chapter Five
The cold and humid Seattle air caressed her face almost tenderly. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes allowing the coldness to pierce her skin to the bone. She might've been overdramatic about the whole situation, but the idea of being out of the institute for good gave her a new appreciation for her surroundings.
After her painful relapse due to Carter's call, she worked hard on her mental health, committing to not leaving until she was better deep into her core. And now she was. Of course, staying there implied that she had to say her goodbyes to her friends as they left, one by one. Richie was the first one to go, promising to be in touch. Stanley left soon after him and apparently, they'd been living together since. Andrew refused to abandon the institute until she was leaving herself because his protective instincts overpowered his reason; in the end, Doctor Loomis forced Andrew's release a week before hers, and he allowed it.
A soft pull on her windbreak made her open the eyes she didn't know she'd closed. Tess Ross was looking at her with her cheeks flushed and a big smile with a tooth gap.
"Aunty, Mommy says that you have to come inside now."
The bossy child grabbed her hand and pulled before she could complain. Ross and Carol had been kind enough to provide her with a place to stay after she came out of the institute and before she decided what to do with her life. That morning, Ross had picked her up from the institute and vaguely implied that a secret party was being prepared which is why she did not make a big fuss when Carol offered her to enjoy herself in their backyard for a few minutes.
What she did not expect, however, was finding Andrew, Stanley, and Richie waiting for her next to Ross, Carol, and Kate. Luka was there as well!! Tess, with her charming smile, pushed her slightly in her lower back when she found herself stuck in place. Smiling broadly, with a terrifying feeling of happiness burning in her chest, she enjoyed her party with her friends.
"You know, Doctor Rodriguez talked the other day about needing personnel in the ER area of the hospital. You know, if you're interested," Ross said in a failed nonchalant tone in the middle of dinner. Carol rolled her eyes in front of him.
"I suppose you put a good word on my behalf?"
Ross snorted, "There was no need, kid. Your curriculum has always been spotless. Yes, you have a big gap on it at the moment, but… You know, with the circumstances…"
The poor man looked at his now wife pleading for aid.
"What do you want to do?" Carol wondered plainly.
"I– I really want to go back to the County General," she confessed staring at her food.
The silence was so gloomy that even the twins stopped their banter in the background glancing at the adults.
"Um…" Luka cleared his throat. "If you don't mind me asking, why?"
"I know it may sound silly but… It's my home. That hospital taught me. It reminds me of all the things I learned with you," she looked at Ross earnestly, "with Mark. I– I truly miss Mark Greene and feel he mentored me to be there, especially in his last months. You both know how important the ER was for him, and how much he enjoyed it. I like it and enjoy it just as much. Of course, I know that there are plenty of ERs in other hospitals, but…"
Sighing, she ran a hand over her face noticing the scarred tissue crossing her skin. "I also believe that it can be good for me. I can't avoid Chicago forever. I can't– I won't be afraid of my hometown just because a psycho played Edward Scissorhands with my body."
"I'm coming with you," Andrew stated.
"There's no need for–"
"He was going with you no matter where you went, sweetcheeks" Richie smiled at you. "You know him well enough to know that. Andrew has adopted us, deal with it."
"Does that mean that you two are coming to Chicago as well?" she asked with skepticism.
Stanley snorted, "We've already rented a place there. Andrew here has negotiated to rent the apartment next to us."
"We'll be neighbors!" Richie cheered.
"It's better to share an apartment. Cheaper."
Having the support of her friends and the companionship of Andrew was settling, to be honest. A part of her thought that having them around in Chicago sounded too much like having a bunch of babysitters, although another part of her understood that the security blanket their friendship had built around them was needed. The world was wider than the institute, ruder and hurtful.
"I guess that's settled, then," Ross smiled proudly, nudging her knee with his own under the table.
She was going home.
*
If there was one thing John Carter was not expecting when he left Chicago for Paris in a desperate move to save his marriage, it was coming back to the County General to work for free while waiting for a kidney donor. Mind you, he never thought he would end up in that position so young, but life and the circumstances… well…
As he parked his black Jeep in front of the emergency entry he felt his bile creep up his throat. Luka, who had kept in touch with him despite the call he made to the mental institution Y/N was in, had warned him about her presence in the hospital. Since that fatidic call, Luka never mentioned Y/N's name in front of John, but when Carter explained his situation and that he was coming back to Chicago, Luka had no way out.
He had no idea if she was working at the moment if Luka had warned her and she had taken some vacations, if she was going to pretend he didn't exist, if she– The possible scenarios ran through his mind as he pushed himself out of the car.
However, he promptly found out that there was another thing he was not expecting when reaching the hospital. Nobody knew him. There was no trace of his old coworkers anywhere. Doctor Morris was the only one he vaguely recognized from the board, and when people heard his name, there was this awkward silence. Of course, they remembered the gossip about Ross and Carol Hathaway. Always the gossip.
Taking another look at the board he did not find her name there and his stomach settled.
The whole business with Banfield about getting some short privileges wasn't so bad. Sure, it took some time to have her alone to fully explain and she looked stern, but in the end, it worked out. Sam was kind enough to tell John about how Y/N had warned Banfield about him probably wanting to work there to keep his skills and even recommended to her that he was a great addition to the staff. That shocked Carter. Of all the scenarios he had portrayed in his mind, that was not one of them.
That night, after having visited the Carter Center and the place where he and Kim spread Joshua's ashes, John stared into nothingness while having his dialysis. The rhythmic sound of the machine drilled his mind. He'd been walking on eggshells with everyone who asked about Kim because they weren't great. After he'd come after her to France, their sorrow got swallowed in silence. They went back to Africa, to work, to be useful. It had been his last resort to save his sanity and his marriage because both of them focused on their work so much that… Well, it sounds awful but their marriage improved as long as the time they spent with each other was shortened.
Now, alone and scared, John felt lost.
*
A week. Y/N managed to avoid Carter for a whole week before their shifts matched almost by accident. Morris had to take care of an issue that forced him to change his shift with Carter. As Y/N was filling up a form next to Frank at the admissions desk, Carter came out of the lounge. She saw his form in her peripheral vision but pretended not to notice. Her skin broke into goosebumps due to the anxiety facing John Carter provoked in her. Finishing the paperwork, she closed the history putting her pen in the chest pocket of her white coat. As she got into a fully standing position with her head up and face visible, Carter stopped in his tracks.
He had imagined the damage to her skin several times before, but he never expected that much. One thing was to picture a tragedy in his mind, and the other was to actually see it. His heart stopped for a moment, breaking into a million pieces.
Then she smiled at him, and it broke again.
It wasn't her usually friendly and loving smile. No. This smile was shy, socially acceptable, and fake.
"Long time no see. I've heard you've been a pain in the ass for this last week, Carter."
Her voice, after all this time, warmed his soul with nostalgia. She sounded artificial, though. Knowing that his body language made her uncomfortable about her scars and probably reminded her about her torture, John closed the distance as he was supposed to and acted as if there weren't scars crossing her face and neck.
"What can I say? It gets annoying to be corrected over and over as if I have no idea what I'm doing."
She snorted, "Yeah, sure. What happens is that you were the golden boy of the ER and now you're rusty. Have you been practicing medicine in Africa? Of course. However, you might agree that the resources and techniques there weren't as advanced as ours then, and while it's been kind of stuck there, here's been improving and changing."
"Still. When I know a procedure can save a life, I don't want to be looked at as if I was a med student again. Especially by people who's less experienced than me."
"Oh, Carter. This is a humbling experience for you. Embrace it."
"We have a multiple-car accident," Sam stated after answering the radio station.
"Are you still rusty, pretty boy?" She gave him her mischievous grin.
She'd been afraid of panicking in front of Carter, of not being able to do her job properly, but in the end, all those concerns proved to be misplaced. Carter and Y/N dived into their usual routine while treating a patient hand-to-hand. Aware of how useless John felt when being corrected and questioned, she did it in the most caring way. Their tandem performed fantastically, to the point of barely needing to exchange a word before doing a procedure in unison. It felt like riding a bike, something one can never forget, no matter how much you push it aside.
Their friendship, although damaged and rusty, was still strong. Even if it had been better for Y/N to just move on ignoring everything related to John Carter.
As the day went by, their personal chat was trivial and mundane focused mostly on how things had changed in the hospital and so on.
With the end of the shift quite close, she grabbed the next history from the admissions desk where Jerry and Frank were arguing again. She went to the bed the patient was in and gave her a polite smile introducing herself. The patient was a middle-aged woman with a fancy dress and fake pearls who pursed her lips the moment she saw Y/N.
"Is this some kind of joke?" the patient exclaimed while you were still assessing the symptoms listed on the history.
"I beg your pardon?"
"I want a doctor. I'm ill and I want to be seen by a proper doctor, not some Freddy Krueger victim."
"I am a real doctor, ma'am. I'm an attending."
"I won't be treated by a freak show like you."
Carter, who was seeing the scene from the admission desk, stopped Sam from intervening. He would've loved to step in and insult the lady just as she rudely was doing with Y/N, but he was well aware of how self-sufficient Y/N was. Stepping in would've only made things worse, so he waited, looking from the sidelines for a hint of anxiety or discomfort that would break Y/N.
None showed up.
"Well, ma'am. I'm the only doctor available, and if you refuse treatment from me I'm going to have to ask you to go to the waiting room until a more suitable doctor is free for you."
"That's not fair! It's my turn!"
"And you refused treatment."
"I might be dying."
"You're not. Please, go to the waiting room."
"This is outrageous. I–"
Y/N turned around ignoring her while Chunny and Haleh accompanied the patient to the waiting room again. According to the chart, the patient did not have anything life-threatening. Y/N was positive that the woman could be treated with some painkillers, so she hid the history under a bunch of paperwork at the admissions desk. She would be treated by another doctor, but after she'd waited her fair share.
John stopped her before she was able to go to her next patient.
"Are you alright?"
"Um… Yeah. I mean, it happens more often than you think," she caressed her scars absently. "Contrary to popular belief, children are the most respectful and nice ones about my scars. It makes me wonder what the fuck happens for a child to become such a middle-aged nightmare."
"Let me know if you need anything."
"I'm fine, Carter."
She didn't lie. She was, in fact, fine. However, the definition of what 'fine' meant had changed for her lowering the bar so much that it was difficult not to be fine.
When her shift was ending, she finally rescued the lady's chart from under the desk before going to the lounge to change. Carter entered a few minutes after her.
"It was nice working with you again. I… Um… I know that things are tense between us, but I was wondering if, maybe, we could grab a coffee someday. To catch up. I want to know how you've been."
John's shy and nervous voice twisted her stomach. Closing her locker, she turned to face her coworker. "I don't drink coffee anymore." She waited for Carter's expression to crumble in defeat before saying anything else. "It doesn't mix well with my meds. I'm free now. If you want."
"Yes!"

Unseen ER | Chapter One
It was 2004. Ten years ago John Carter walked for the first time through the County General's doors, and here he was, once again, after his time in Africa with the excellent Kim (Makemba Likasu) holding his arm, in America. He'd always been quite the ladies' man. No, really, he could barely remember a year in which he was single. It wasn't a game for him, not like it had been for Doctor Ross until he finally settled with Nurse Hathaway. Carter had put his heart on full display any time; he even thought that he had found his one in Abby. He was going to give her his grandmother's ring, for God's sake! Now, though, he was quite content with Kim. She was extraordinary, fun, brilliant, gorgeous, and pregnant with his child. Of course, he loved her.
He couldn't stop the little pain in his guts when thinking about Y/N and the last time he had seen her.
The hospital was different since he had left for Africa, and there were new people too. Well, at least the new security system seemed sturdy enough to actually protect the patients and professionals inside. He shakes his head, remembering that time he led a strike until Weaver bought metal detectors. Totally unintentional, really! He wasn't a leader that way, no matter how Y/N said otherwise.
Making a beeline, Carter introduced himself to Nurse Taggart, also known as Sam, at the admissions desk and she let them in. Chuny, Haleh, Malik, Frank… God, he had missed them. When Pratt showed up to greet him, he felt suddenly anxious. It was stupid really. He had been well aware that both Abby and Y/N were going to be there — they worked here! —, but he still felt uneasy with the idea of showing up with his pregnant wife, without notice, to where his ex-girlfriend and his– his Y/N worked. Luckily for him, a trauma entered the hospital before he could even walk Kim to the OB floor.
The distraction was welcomed.
He had missed this, too. The thrill. The light. The technology that couldn't be found in the hospitals he had been helping in back in Africa. Oh, yes, baby; Doctor John Carter is back!!
The sight of his baby on the ultrasound was shocking to him. He had seen so many babies and yet his cheeks got heated up; his eyes filled with tears of joy. His baby. His. He was going to be a father. Oh, how he missed his grandparents at the time. They would have loved the little one.
Meeting Abby when he had an arm wrapped around Kim's shoulders and a picture of the ultrasound in the other hand was, in fact, pretty awkward. He awkwardly hugged her, and she responded accordingly. Luka came along to save them from the uncomfortable attempt at a conversation that was taking place.
"If it wasn't for you John and I might have never met," said Kim. Whether it was good or bad, Carter couldn't tell, honestly.
Luka nodded, quite proud of the claim missing the way Abby turned her head, displeased; he saw the picture in Carter's hand, and turned the conversation towards the baby; not a better topic for Abby, that's for sure. John pretended not to notice any of it.
"Well, I should probably… get back to work," Carter stated.
"It was nice to meet you all," Kim smiled at them. "Although it's a shame that I haven't met Y/N yet. John talked a lot about her."
Abby and Luka shared a knowing look; he gave Kim a fake smile. "She's not working here at the moment, I'm afraid."
"She's not?" Carter asked, confused.
"I'll tell you later if you want. Now we all have work."
The day was long and demanding of him until he finished his shift and was able to corner Luka for answers.
"Well? Where's Y/N?"
Luka hesitated, "She's in a mental institute."
The world shattered and collapsed in front of Carter. The questions piled up in his mind, but he was unable to voice any of them. He opened his mouth and closed it again a couple of times. His silence gave Luka enough time to figure out the best way to tell him what he could.
"Do you remember the last time you saw her? The day you left for good? You took some equipment from the hospital and left and she–"
"She followed me. Yes. Um… It wasn't to stop me; she wished me good luck, and– Then I left."
"Y/N never came back to the hospital. She was abducted before she could," before Carter could cut his explanation with questions, Luka held his hand up, pleading for patience and silence. "Apparently her boyfriend at the time was out there. He saw how you two said your goodbyes," he said with a pointed look, and Carter had to swallow a lump stuck in his throat, "and he took her. He kept her for five days. It wasn't a nice experience, he– Fuck, Carter, he tortured her and the moment he saw the police in his building, he stabbed her."
John flinched at that, his lower back suddenly hurting, a ghostly reminder of his own stabbing experience. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Frank called you when we noticed that she hadn't returned and you told him that you hadn't seen her."
"Why the fuck didn't he tell me that she was missing!! I thought that– Shit…"
"Anyway, what's done it's done, my friend. We took care of her in the hospital; no permanent damage on the physical level, but after a psychological exam it became clear that she was strongly traumatized. The psych floor didn't have any rooms at the time, so she was sent home–"
"What? That's not right! I–"
Luka placed his strong hands on Carter's shoulders, giving them a reassuring squeeze. "Y/N came to my place and I took a few days off to look after her," that seemed to calm the outraged man, although an ugly tug of jealousy twisted his insides. "There was no need in the end. Apparently, your grandmother liked her very much and Y/N was named in her will. With that money, we sent her to a private mental institute. She's been taken care of. I visit her from time to time, but I usually call and she had made a few good friends. She just can't come to work just yet, it's all too fresh to come back to Chicago."
"She's not in Chicago, then?"
"I'm afraid not. I cannot tell you where she is."
Carter frowned, "Why not? I want to talk to her. I need to see that she's doing fine."
"You need. Of course. But what of what she needs?"
"What are you–"
"She's in love with you and you know it, Carter. Since the beginning, you've known, and you did not correspond her. I'm not saying that you should have. I don't want to get stuck between you two; she just told me how she had always been there for you, longing for your love but quite content with just being your friend."
"Y/N's my best friend," he mumbled.
"I know that. She knows that too. However, she still waited for you year after year until she admitted defeat, then she found herself a boyfriend and you didn't like him."
"Can you blame me for that? I knew that he wasn't good, and look what he did!"
"You still kissed her goodbye."
Silence.
He had done that.
"I'm not saying this situation is your fault, but you must understand that for her to be able to come back to her old life, she needs to give up any remaining feeling she has for you. I'm not going to tell you where she is staying so you can call her just because you need it, Carter. The last time you were here you broke up with Abby without even talking about it, you two simply went in different directions and that was all. Coming back with Kim can be upsetting to Abby, of course, but she was the one who pushed you away that time, did she not? How do you think Y/N is going to take the news? Don't get me wrong, she would be happy for you because she's always happy as long as you're happy. That's not healthy, do you understand?"
He did. He didn't like it, though. Carter nodded all the same and the conversation was over. The Carter manor welcomed him darker and emptier than ever. Kim ran down the stairs to hug him and he responded unable to feel anything.
Suddenly it hit him; it was the first time he was in Chicago without Y/N. It was like the floor had disappeared under his feet in the blink of an eye. He had met her at the County General in his third year of med school, his first time under Benton's leadership. He thought about all the important events in his life since then, and she had been in every one of them to laugh with him, to cry with him, to give him support, to let him vent about something, to– She had always been there for him, and when she had needed him he was flying away from her. Away from her truths and his heart.
Carter didn't notice he was crying until Kim caressed his cheeks with a concerned look in her beautiful eyes. He loved her. He truly loved Kim, and–
"You fall in love way too easily, Carter. Tell me, and be honest with me, did you or did you not start to fall in love with that french nurse that was already with Luka even when you were determined to propose to Abby? Ah, there it is, the hit puppy look I'm immune to. You can't hide things from me, remember? I can see your soul." Y/N's playful but stern tone echoed in his mind.
