My maternal grandmother could crochet.
Nothing complicated. Basic granny squares and double crochet, but she was the one in the family who made blankets for her kids and grandchildren. Dementia hit in her nineties but she still remembered how to make granny squares and made dozens. I asked her for one last blanket but by that point the dementia had taken how to join the squares. They were stacked in piles around the dining room table and when she went into care, into a plastic box for storage.
When she died, I asked for them. By that point I could crochet but didn't know how to join, and figured, someday, I'd learn.
It's at least a decade later. I'm the one who makes blankets for my nephews, for my cousin's children, for pregnant coworkers. Last year I made seven blankets, three for Project Linus, the rest for family and a friend. I can follow crochet charts, filet crochet, do clusters, fans, basic lace, amigurumi.
The world, as is its wont, is on fire. Tonight, I have opened the plastic container for the first time in a decade. I'm sorting them into piles by color. I know now how to look at them and see where her memory slipped or areas I'll need to repair. There's no printed pattern but if I need more I have the skills to copy the pattern.
Each square is 5 inches. Blanket size for Project Linus is 40x60. I'll see how many people I can give her last crochet legacy to.

NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER
Betty Mahmoody (Betty Lover) is best known for her memoir, Not Without My Daughter (1987) as well as the film which stars Sally Field (1991).
In 1984, Betty left Michigan, US to go to Tehran, Iran with her husband Sayyed and their daughter Mahtob for a short holiday to visit his family. Once there she was trapped, her husband refused to let her return to America with their daughter. Her husband’s family was hostile towards her and her husband would abuse and threaten her. If she didn’t submit to his wishes he would punish her by not allowing her to see her daughter.
With help from locals she was able to escape with her daughter to the American embassy in Turkey in 1986.
Sayyed Bozorg Mahmoody ‘Moody’ left Iran at the age of 18 to study English in London and then moved to the US in 1961 and became a doctor. He met Betty in 1974, they dated for three years and married in 1977 and lived in Texas. Their daughter, Mahtob was born in 1979 and the family moved to Michigan. He planned a two week holiday in Iran so they could visit his family. They arrived on 4 August 1984, when they arrived he told his wife and daughter that they won’t be returning to the US. When Betty said she wanted to return home, he hit her in front of Mahtob and she fell into a deep depression. When mother and daughter escaped Iran, Betty filed for a divorce. Sayyed Bozorg Mahmoody died in Tehran in 2009, aged 70.
Her daughter, Mahtob released her memoir; My Name is Mahtob (2015), which depicts her version of events. Mahtob said once they arrived in Iran that her father turned into a completely different person. Because her father was born in Iran, the father has legal custody of the children. After Mahtob returned to America she never got to see her father again.

Book Review: Not Without My Daughter by: Betty Mahmoody
Initial Thoughts: When I was in high school, we sometimes had movie days. Those were days where we would not sit around and learn math or French, but watch a film. Usually, these films were used later for a purpose. For discussion, for essays, etc. It was rare that we watched a movie to simply give us a break (except at Christmas time or near the end of the year). I ended up watching Not Without…

Actually so tired that people mainly focus on the bdsm when they talk about La Pianiste when we literally have this dynamic right here. Like, that's insane.

What if you were a little girl in her 40's who couldn't grow up because of your mother-wife who made you sleep in her bed and forced you to repress every sexual desires and thoughts of becoming your own person just to keep you close to her ? What if you fought back and yearned for dangerous things out of her reach ? But also, what if you let her because it's all you've ever known and been taught to want ?
#these two are so entangled with each other and in the roles they play#(mother and daughter. husband and wife. prodigal or ungrateful daughter. adoring or mocking mother)#that they cannot handle it when something else is thrown into the mix#There's no space left because they fill all the roles in each other's lives.#but at the same time they never give the other exactly what she wants#The fights never last. Erika will never live up to her mother's ambitions. And her mother will never give her any form of affection which#might satiate her hunger for love. And so on.#They are deeply imperfect- Love and Despise each other but they could never bear the thought of being separated#When I read the part in the book where Erika talks to Walter for the first time and all she wants is to go back into her mother's womb...#you can't make that shi up#when people talk about toxic yuri that's what they could mean but unfortunately we live in a society#gradually learning to accept the person I'm becoming who would've been burned at the stake by my younger self <3#been having so much thoughts about this film once again. And I know that nothing written here is new but I'm a little sad no one really#talks about this relationship online since it's really the heart of the story for me#Of course everything happening with Walter is important. But none of that would be there without the mother-daughter situation#la pianiste#the piano teacher#haneke#sheep stuffs#isabelle huppert#also I'd kinda get it if it was another film and it made people too uncomfortable to talk about it. but I mean this is literally La Pianist#*

day 6 || this era lasted like 2 minutes but i love it anyway
#daily gi-hun#art post#redhead gi-hun my beloved#i know i barely ever draw him w/ red hair its not on purpose i swear#god this era of gi-hun in general is just so. hes exquisite to me okay#all eras of gi-hun are exquisite jsyk but while we r on the topic of this one#ppl kinda misunderstand this gi-hun lots i think. it was esp bad in 2021 i remember when he turned around before getting on the plane#hes not healed. like. At All.#if im being honest i dont even think this couldve been the START of a healing journey for him#other people have pointed this out before but like. what was he gonna do in america#that guilt would still follow him there. the trauma and ptsd would still be a huge part of his life#and its not like there are readily available resources for dealing with the trauma of going thru a death game#yeah he'd get to be with his daughter but ga-yeong is very perceptive and i think she'd notice the changes within her dads personality#which could even put a different kind of strain on their relationship thats different from the kind that existed before#gi-hun could only rlly distract himself for so long. i feel like even if he did go to america it'd just be a matter of time before he >#> couldnt take it anymore and went back to stop the games OR. something.. Worse.#its just not the kind of person gi-hun is. to forget like people want him to. thats just not him im sorry#there was never a world where he got on that plane and left it behind for good#anyway whatever i dont think we should shame a guy for trying to stop mass murder#yea we can debate all day about the effects his self isolation had on other people but i will NOT back down on him being right for TRYING#(side note: you can acknowledge gi-huns isolation had negative effects on other people [ie his daughter] WITHOUT VICTIM BLAMING HIM)#squid game#seong gihun#seong gi hun#squid game fanart#my art#doodle
