Having read through all the posts of the dl kids, I just love how all of them have these really complex and complicated relationships with their parents, while Johnny is just "My dads love me and I love them!"

Jassy: I always put one of my dads on a pedestal to an almost unhealthy degree, while I struggle to even somewhat connect to the other one

Liana & Gertrude: I used to have a good relationship with both my dads, until one of them was unfaithful and now I can never look at him the same way again

Wes: My dad treated me more as a way to one up other people than as his actual child

Jekiv: While my mom is great, my dad walked out on us and I barely ever saw him

Novo: Growing up I loved my mom and loathed my dad, but looking back now I realize that to them I was just a tool to spite the other

Thinking about which Houses are on which planets, and particularly the question of whether the Third or the Fourth is on Saturn.

Mythologically, it could be both: the infant Zeus, son of Saturn, was raised on Mount Ida and Ops (the birthplace of Jeannemary) shares a name with the Roman equivalent of Rhea, the wife of Saturn.

But House order might shed some light on this. We know the House numbers are in order of foundation. The Second, on Mars, was established first. Mars is near earth, but it also had some significant infrastructure present pre res:

What about the Mars installation, what about the fusion batteries? We’ve still only got room for five million tops up there, guys, and we haven’t worked out how to feed them either.

As long as the early Second kept the numbers down, they were probably pretty good to go.

So what might the Third have grown out from? What other major infrastructure gets mentioned in NTN?

Even when they were constructing the other ships we got told straight-up that it was nothing, they were being sent off to the Kuiper installation to be on point for the full-population evac...

The Kuiper installation is mentioned alongside Mars as rejected possiblities for evacuating large numbers of people from Earth.

So where was the Kuiper installation? Probably near Neptune.

The other pre-res installation that gets mentioned is a "shell" being build at Uranus, presumably incomplete at the time of the Resurrection. If fan theories that the Eighth are Uranus are correct, they may be living somewhere very sci fi indeed. Perhaps by the time the last 'proper' House was founded, they had the time and tech to complete it.

If the Third are Neptune, originally the Kuiper installation, then by process of elimination that would put the Fourth on Saturn. There's no mention of any infrastructure near Saturn predating the Resurrection, but perhaps there was some kind of mining on its moons?

I actually have a theory about the Fifth. Why is the Koniortos Court an installation in the atmosphere of Jupiter? A cryo project for 10 billion would need a lot of helium 3. That's not hugely plentiful on earth. But it is in the atmosphere of Jupiter.

The Sixth seems to have been built ex novo. The Seventh on Venus I fear might be evidence that John is perfectly capable of fixing global warming when he so chooses.

And the Ninth? A drillshaft sounds rather like mining again.

Svengallop's parents are Charity Kindheart and Bracer Britches. The two had a brief affair, but never officially dated and Sven was an accident. Charity loved her son, but passed away due to illness when he was a teenager, so Sven was sent to live with his father who never wanted him. This has a lot to do with Svengallop's attitude as an adult.

Wind Rider is a womanizer and serial adulterer with several illegitimate children, including Helia, Lighting Dust and Cloudy Daze among others.

Celestia was born with an all-pink mane and tail and would have gained more shades of orange and yellow as she grew, but she instead gained hues of green and blue when she took over Luna's duty of raising the moon after Nightmare Moon's banishment.

Wind Sprint's original father died in a sports-related accident, which is why Clear Sky found comfort and common ground with Quibble Pants who was able to distract her from sports for a while. Unfortunately, as we all know from the episode, this had no effect on Wind Sprint's persistent love for sports.

Celestia was technically the first pony who managed to pull off a sonic rainboom, but it wasn't the same as Rainbow Dash's since she lacked the colors of a proper rainbow. Over time it was forgotten, but Celestia's "rainboom" was the basis of the sonic rainboom being a myth in the first place.

Pinkie Pie and Applejack's respective families are both descended from the children of Chancellor Puddinghead and Smart Cookie.

Orchard Blossom is an actual Apple family member that Big Mac was impersonating in "Brotherhooves Social".

Rainbow Blaze (the rainbow-maned stallion from "Games Ponies Play" who was confirmed is not Rainbow Dash's father) is Rainbow Dash's older brother.

The final alternate future seen in "The Cutie Remark-Part 2" where Equestria is nothing but an apocalyptic wasteland is a result of Daybreaker coming to life and burning everything to the ground into pure ash. It got so bad that it ultimately left Daybreaker with no kingdom to rule anymore. (As horrifying as it sounds, the dirt that Twilight and Starlight were standing on in that scene included the ashes of hundreds of dead ponies.)

Pear Butter and Bright Mac were killed by Timberwolves on a day trip. Sadly, Granny Smith considers herself responsible for this as she forgot to warn them about the Timberwolves that day. As a result, this is also why Applejack is so good at fighting them off.

Due to their godlike status, Celestia and Luna are the only immortal alicorns. Ordinary royalty like Twilight Sparkle, Cadance, and Flurry Heart have longer lifespans than normal ponies but can still die of old age.

Screwball is the daughter of Nurse Sweetheart and her eyes only become swirly when she's exposed to Poison Joke. The effect it has on her is that it makes her see weird stuff and she used to be addicted to it, but ended up quitting altogether as the last time she used it (around the time Discord returned) caused her to see some pretty nightmarish imagery.

The episode "Yakety Sax" was just a bad fever dream Pinkie Pie had after eating too much Yak cuisine one day.

Whoa Nelly's real name is Jelly Nelly Bean. Her large size is the result of a very rare pituitary disorder.

Fluttershy's human world counterpart is a vegan.

Aunt and Uncle Orange are both parental figures to Babs Seed. Whether they're her biological or adoptive parents in still unknown.

The hippocampus (aka the seaponies from the 2017 movie) once existed as a separate race, but are believed to have been driven to extinction because of the Sirens, who destroyed their homes, depleted their food sources, and even directly preyed on them. This was of course before Queen Novo fled into the sea and formed the seaponies we know from the 2017 movie.

Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood had Scootaloo later in life as they didn't really plan to have a foal, hence why they're such thoughtless parents.

Mane Allgood is actually a cousin of Daring Do.

Bulk Biceps is Featherweight's biological father. He was formerly married to an abusive, neglectful, and alcoholic wife, resulting in a divorce and Bulk and Featherweight moving to Ponyville and leaving her for good.

Cheese Sandwich is the younger brother of Marine Sandwich. The real reason he ran away from home and stumbled into Ponyville by chance is because he wanted to get away from his psychotic older sister. (Based off of this.)

Trixie's full name is actually Bellatrix Lulamoon. She prefers to go by Trixie as it's easier to remember.

Tempest Shadow didn't receive her cutie mark until she was an adult, AFTER the events of the MLP movie where she started using her horn to make fireworks.

The draconequus were once a race of creatures that went to war against ponykind after their prince (aka Discord) was turned to stone. The war resulted in many of them being wiped out and it's currently unknown if any besides Discord still exist today.

Kirin shed and regrow their horns once a year, similar to deer antlers. Shed kirin horns make a powerful ingredient in potions.

favorite thing about them: she’s such a thoughtful, sweet and mature motherly-figure for most of her subjects... always willing to guide them with some uplifting advice but yet underneath all her “regality”, can still be capable of showing a genuine sense of humor and love for fun~ 😄

least favorite thing about them: i guess that the show seemed to sadly underutilize her potential in certain stories... even with twilight at times despite the two’s bond supposing to be more of a special one, leading up to twi succeeding her on the throne in the finale :c. it would’ve been nice imo if they had just a teensy bit more focus stories together to develop their dynamic further, alongside the other princesses

favorite line: “A true princess in any world leads not by forcing others to bow before her, but by inspiring others to stand with her. we have all seen that you are capable of just that. I hope you see it too, princess twilight...”

random headcanon: celestia used to be alot more laidback and fun-loving as a princess 1000 years ago (kinda like a mix of rainbow dash and pinkie pie, in a way)... but the trauma from what went down with luna/nightmare moon humbled her enough to start taking her royal duties more seriously, turning her into the “calmer” princess she is today

least favorite thing about them: she’s... a bit too broody, at times? even for a 1000 year old alicorn, it felt pretty excessive to see her dark past being brought up so often in some of her focus scenes tbh... (*and don’t even get me started on the episode “do princesses dream of magic sheep?”... yikes, what a mess >_>; *)

Comes from an extremely confusing home life, with her dads splitting up and getting together over and over again, both of them having had other partners during the breakup periods that never really last

In the present she has two dads and an additional step dad. She doesn’t like him that much, but her dads relationship seem more stable with him so she bears with it

Liana lost her leg just as she did in canon, due to frostbite. She got lost in the woods during winter for almost a week, and lost one of her shoes in a hole. She likes to dramatize the story though, to seem cooler

Started her own company at eighteen, and it grew into a multimillion corporation after only two years

She dabbles in a lot of things with her company, everything from movie production to train travel, tech to food items, theme parks to merch, and everything in between. Liana doesn’t calm down until she has control over every major industry in the world

Evil capitalist? Yes but consider this: Sexy evil capitalist lesbian. It makes up for it

She does own a lot of charities too, the majority of which being somewhat bird related, like the preservation of endangered birds, or rehabilitation of birds that have been abused by their owners. She likes birds

BDubs and Impulse wasn’t full beauty pageant moms (like those fuckers who like, perform surgeries on their four year olds so they will have fuller lips and shit), but beauty pageants was a huge part of my boy’s childhood, which wasn’t the best thing since he hates the spotlight and when people have their eyes on him. His dads would have stopped signing him up for them if he asked, but he was too nervous to do so, so yeah

But hey, at least my man can play the cello like a champ as an adult, since that was his talent.

I imagine Renchanting is some shop her dad owns, maybe either like a bisexual crystal shop or like a costume place, but she probably works part time there

Volunteers at a lot of dog rescue shelters, and has adopted many of them

Is studying to become a vet, but is also practicing writing on the side. She wants to write children’s fantasy novels, about princesses and magic

Is dating Novo, and has been waiting for him to propose for almost six years. She gonna keep on waiting

Johnny

Man is half British half Arizonan, still somehow speaks with a country accent. Only god knows where he got it from, and I don’t even think he does

Apart from more humane features, nothing about Johnny changes. Still an Aromantic icon, still a sweetie, still a rancher at heart, and he can still absolutely shred it on the Banjo

Suffers from mild anemia and asthma. He sometimes struggles to keep up with his friends, especially when they were children, but he always found ways to keep their pace, even if that means he sometimes had to be carried

He absolutely has one of those trucks that he treats as his baby. He’s worked on it for years, he has a name for it (It’s Butternut), he will cry if it’s even slightly scratched, it’s his child and he loves it very much.

Has taken Ninjitsu and parkour classes since she learned how to walk

Suffers from Hyperthyroidism, which is the reason behind his skinny figure, his patchy hair, his weak muscles, and his bulging eyes. He’s had it since he was a tween, and he tries to not let it bother him

He gets sunburnt really easily so he rarely goes outside when the sun is shining. He’s pale af

Is studying forensic pathology, and works part time at a morgue. He’s always had a weird fascination with dead bodies, but hey at least he isn’t a serial killer

While his parents are on non speaking terms, they’re a lot more healthy than in canon. Novo is well raised and loved, he’s just Like That

Has a freakish resistance to the cold, like, Canadian level resistance, so mans will just lay in in a t-shirt and skirt in the snow while taking a nap

Picks up a new instrument every few weeks. He can’t play any of them, but he likes to find ways to annoy his friends with them

Já chegou aos escaparates de ‘The Ascension’, o quinto e novo trabalho do norte-americano ‘Sufjan Stevens’, um registo que viu a luz do dia a vinte e setembro e que sucede ao excelente ‘Carrie & Lowell’, de dois mil e quinze, um trabalho que marcou o retorno do músico à folk mais intimista, nostálgica e contemplativa, depois de ter deambulado entre o caótico, o esquizofrénico e o genial em discos tão importantes como ‘Illinoise’ ou ‘The Age Of Adz’.

‘The Ascension’ é uma jornada eletrónica climática e intimista, mas também algo inquietante, feita de um psicadelismo eminentemente experimental. Depois desta evidência, que fica clara logo após uma primeira audição do alinhamento da obra, importa referir que ‘The Ascension’ é um marco na inflexão sonora que este músico de Chicago tem vindo a fazer ultimamente, não só no seu projeto a solo, mas também nas colaborações onde tem assentado arraiais, com particular destaque para o disco ‘Planetarium’ que assinou a meias com Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly e James McAlister, há pouco mais de três anos. Mesmo contendo alguns dos tiques identitários que marcam uma carreira de quase duas décadas, impressos na intimidade dialogante da sua escrita, que atingiu o apogeu no antecessor que se debruçava sobre o súbito desaparecimento da mãe e na seleção de alguns arranjos e detalhes que ainda têm um travo folk inconfundível, ‘The Ascension’ oferece-nos, acima de tudo, um vasto e barroco festim eletrónico, justificado em diversas composições recheadas de uma vasta miríade de efeitos, distorções de guitarra, interseções e arranjos que, como é o caso da grandiosa composição America, servem bem à medida da imensidão e do silêncio que carateriza o vazio cósmico a que o músico de Chicago nos tem habituado ultimamente, não só nas obras já referidas, mas também no inquietanto trabalho ‘The Age Of Adz’, a comemorar dez anos de existência.

No entanto, não há um único fio condutor na descrição estilística de ‘The Ascension’, um álbum onde questões como a religiosidade, o sobrenatural e o abstracionismo, no fundo, conceitos que também servem para definir o conceito de amor de que Sufjan Stevens tanto gosta de explorar, são a pedra de toque de cerca de oitenta minutos que formam, no seu todo, moldura sonora estética que pode ser comparada a uma verdadeira jóia, em todos os sentidos. “Video Game”, talvez a canção da carreira do musico de Chicago que mais fielmente obedece ao formato pop dito convencional, mostra também um perfil radiofónico e acessível no disco, uma canção que, sendo melodicamente feliz, assenta num registo sintético proeminente, em que, numa espécie de dance pop psicadélico, vozes e batidas aproximam perigosamente Sufjan Stevens de um território sonoro dominado por alguns dos maiores mestres do R&B e do hip-hop atual.

Em suma, cinco anos após um período extremamente complicado da vida do músico, o entusiasmo, a inspiração e a apurada veia criativa regressaram a Chicago, envolveram Stevens, deram-lhe uma vontade de trabalhar fora do vulgar e o resultado é um disco cuja audição nos proporciona uma experiência ímpar e de ascenção plena a um estágio superior de letargia.

Card Shark 111: Tough Questions

...and an announcement!

Greetings, my CCG-playing friends! Welcome back to Card Shark! Before I start the Shark today, I wanted to reveal some exciting CCG-related news: starting mid-September, I will be participating in Meticulous Talks’ Invitational Tournament of Champions! I’ll be clashing with and alongside some of the most successful MLP:CCG players in virtual CCG battles for the ages, and I can’t thank the folks at Meticulous Talks enough for inviting me. Dates where y’all can catch me are TBD - for more info on the tournament, you can check out the Reddit announcement right here!

...that being said, what does one run for a tournament such as this? Do you go for something tried and true (but still legal)? Or do you find an annoying niche like Thorax Mane/UR Novo/Meadowbrook’s Mask and run with that? These are all serious ponderings... that today’s Shark just happens to look at, though not in the same sense. It’s time to take a look at Friends Forever’s “Tough Questions!”

It’s a good thing the details of this card are certain. This is a Rare Blue/White Event that costs 2 AT, 2 Blue req, and 2 White req to play during your Main Phase. During your Main Phase, playing the Event triggers a Faceoff between one of your characters (that could be a Mane or Friend) and an opposing Friend or Troublemaker. Lose the Faceoff? Nothing happens (except you lose AT). Win the Faceoff? That opposing Friend or Troublemaker is banished. I don’t know about you, but I think that is a super nice range! Paying 2 AT with relatively low color req to banish something in this manner is great if you believe you can win the Faceoff. Most cards that can banish Friends so freely (as in, have no requirement as to power levels or cost) tend to be pretty costly AT-wise (Old Money, Particular Socialite, Queen Chrysalis, Evil Twin, etc.) or require a minimum of three types of color req (It’s Time to Be Awesome, Friendship U, etc). This card is, in my eyes, one of the few exceptions. As for banishing Troublemakers? I can name even fewer of those! Most cards focus on challenging Troublemakers during phases that aren’t the Troublemaker Phase or just dismissing them when defeating them is a harder option. But banishing in this way ensures that your opponent cannot get that Troublemaker back for the rest of the game (namely with a certain card called Grogar, Legion of Doom/Father of Monsters), while also nicely keeping it out of your way. Sure, the Faceoff could be considered an additional cost like the examples I’ve listed. But since you control the majority of the Faceoff, choosing both cards that, well, face off, they’re some of the easiest Faceoffs to win. (Unless you’re using Queen Novo, Benevolent Ruler, of course... but that’s a Shark for another day.) The answer is clear: this card can be both generous and loyal to your cause.

Now where were we with the actual “tough” part? There’s a couple things going on here that may hurt you in the long run. First, as with all Faceoffs, there is the chance you’ll lose it. Losing a Tough Questions Faceoff really doesn’t hurt you in any way like other cards that force Faceoffs such as Poetry Slam or Nightmare Moon, Blackest Night - you just waste 2 AT (which, despite me always saying every AT counts, might not be as bad as it sounds if you’re running cards like Rainbowshine, Gift Giver or even a certain new Set 12/New Dawn card) and your Event is discarded. This all could potentially be less significant, however, since I’ve already established that if you can control enough factors in the Faceoff, it can be easy for you to win. Second, believe it or not, there are quite a few ways to get around an Event like this, and I don’t just mean by having you lose the Faceoff. To give a few examples: Octavia, Harmony and Dissonance (which, fun fact, was one of the first Card Sharks, written while I was still working out all the kinks of the column) can cancel opposing Events, halting a Faceoff and keeping a potentially banished Friend or Troublemaker in play. Brian, One Swell Guy, can be retired in the place of another Friend that would be dismissed, moved, or banished. (Yes, the little guy prevents your Friends from being sent to the moon! He doesn’t just dismiss Resources!) He can’t protect Troublemakers, but the simple fact he can save Friends from being banished already makes him an unexpected force to be reckoned with. There’s even cards like Ember, My Way or the Highway that a player can exhaust to just stop a Faceoff. No winners, no losers, no Friends or Troublemakers going to the moon. All your prep to guarantee a surefire win in the Faceoff may be for naught with the simplest of things. Of course, everyone’s a critic - just be careful when you lay down your criticism.

Here’s a few more cards that float around in space distributing wings:

*Daybreaker, Blinding Light. If you have one of these in play and you don’t choose it during a forced Faceoff, either you have a super sinister techy plan or you forgot you had this in play. Daybreaker ADORES Faceoffs with her Competitive 3 (giving her 6 power during Faceoffs involving her) and her ability to score you a point when you win a Faceoff involving her. 6 power is a beast by itself, but the idea of scoring an additional point just by playing an Event and controlling almost all the details of the subsequent Faceoff? Feels good, man. If you want a similar alternate to use in this scenario, Scootaloo, Most Creative makes a decent substitute with her 4 Blue/White power, Prepared, and ability to score you an extra point.

*Autumn Blaze, Chatterbox AND/OR Spooky Ruins. I list both these cards and their similar effects here since they can be used in potentially different circumstances. Chatterbox forces opponents to flip one fewer card during Faceoffs with any characters with 4 or more power. If you’re targeting an opposing Friend with at least 4 power - and are forcing that opposing Friend to fight a character like Daybreaker, Blinding Light or Scootaloo, Most Creative - it’s almost a surefire guarantee that the unlucky Friend is getting banished. Spooky Ruins simply forces opponents to flip one fewer card during all Faceoffs. What Spooky Ruins has that Autumn Blaze doesn’t have to worry about, however, is the threat of Resource removal - and Spooky Ruins, in my experience, is a very frequent target of it. I think both cards could be valuable alongside Tough Questions - hence they are both listed here. 

*A Wrinkle in Time. Yes, it’s another Event to go with that first Event! This is one of my favorite Defenders of Equestria Events that I wish I had more reason to use. During a Faceoff, when your opponent flips something you don’t like, you can wrinkle them up and banish that flipped card! They then not only lose that card, but lose that power for the Faceoff and cannot flip another card unless they have a card that allows them to like Applejack, Carbo-Loader, Barrel Through, or Power Play. This is a good card to have when your opponent can control what they flip, especially during a Faceoff such as this where it’s a Friend or Troublemaker they really want to keep and will do what they can to keep them. Plus, wrinkly Rarity brings me a weird joy that I can’t explain. >:)

The Emperor is to Aries what the Empress is to Libra. Libra is the Justice and Empress cards in tarot. Impossible to know what the Empress sign will be but LH is a Libra and we all know how in love he was with her.

Anon, this is controversial in a way. 🤔 Some say what you said, I have seen it too, but there are several fonts online and in books that give a different sign for these cards. Aries is The Hierophant or The Chariot to some, including to my Tarot teacher’s sources when I first studied. Like others say the Empress represents Cancer and even Taurus. Here are some of the sources I found online:

And here Aries is the Chariot and Cancer is the Empress or The Moon…

Either way, we don’t need to be that glued to the signs because the cards represent them. We might be talking about ascendant, Moon, whatever, or just nothing at all and we are looking at personality traits. We take guesses and see what happens…
