jiang cheng's (alleged) fun torture hobby

so one claim i've seen get passed around quite often is the following: "jiang cheng hunted down, tortured, and killed countless demonic cultivators because he was convinced wei wuxian would resurrect, and he wanted to kill the resurrected wei wuxian himself."

now, the question of whether this claim is true or not tends to get answered with a simple "yes" in anti-jiang-cheng circles. but if you think about it logically, there are in fact at least 6 separate claims being made in this statement, all of which must be verified before the entire statement can be said to be true:

jiang cheng actively hunted down demonic cultivators during the timeskip.

once jiang cheng captured said demonic cultivators, jiang cheng tortured them.

jiang cheng eventually killed these demonic cultivators.

jiang cheng did this to many demonic cultivators.

jiang cheng did all of the above first and foremost out of an obsession with wei wuxian; he was convinced wei wuxian would resurrect eventually and wanted to find the resurrected wei wuxian.

jiang cheng wanted to kill the resurrected wei wuxian; he killed all those demonic cultivators because he suspected they were wei wuxian.

now, can it really be decisively said that each of these 6 statements is guaranteed to be true? that all of them have conclusive textual evidence supporting their truthfulness?

after all, which of these claims one takes to be true, and which of these claims one takes to be false, vastly changes one's picture of jiang cheng during the 13 year timeskip.

personally...i do not think all 6 of these claims are supported by the text. i think the bolded claim is as much of an exaggeration as are the in-universe claims about the yiling laozu killing thousands for fun.

i cannot speak for everyone but most people aren't shaming y'all for liking catra or hordak. it's just the fact that most catra stans are apologists and act like she did nothing wrong. (same applies for hordak, but i've seen fewer hordak apologists.)

even this post reads as “omg emotionally repressed characters, they didn't mean to hurt anyone! they're just not used to healthy relationships :((((” which is a HUGE understatement. doesn't matter if catra and hordak are damaged or abused or whatever, they were literally destroying kingdoms and killing innocent people. stans need to realize that catra's and hordak's actions weren't personal or aimed at just one person.

and even if we're talking about personal relationships here, saying that “catra only hurts people because she pushes them away” is not just an understatement, it's straight up WRONG.

catra doesn't push people away, she moreso plays a game of push and pull that most abusers do in order to manipulate their victims.

if catra was just pushing adora away, there wouldn't be a problem. but she was doing the OPPOSITE of that, she was actively chasing down adora and trying to kill her. she was obsessed with adora. all of this cannot be excused by “she's incapable of forming close relationships” it's a lot more dangerous than that.

Okay okay okay, so, during Marineford when Sengoku announces Luffy's heritage to the whole bloody world right in the middle of the war, we see everyone important react to it except for Crocodile. For Crocodad Truthers, this could be because Crocodile's reaction to the news (finding out that the idiot child who beat his ass was actually his own son) could have been very telling and Oda couldn't show it to us at the time

And this kind of begs the question then; what did Crocodile's reaction actually look like? Did he just freeze in the moment in cold sweat and utter horror, trying to process the words Sengoku had just said? No, it can't be, that's impossible, Strawhat doesn't even look like Dragon, there's no fucking way it's him! ...But, it's not like he could know for sure, he didn't know what Dragon named the child, and Strawhat was unusually sturdy, and how did he get Ivankov to help him anyways, unless--!!

But also Crocodile's reaction could've been just

Not Arya, Robb, and Jon catching strays for not "warning" Sansa about Joffrey?? As though they didn't all meet him at the same time and have equal opportunity to understand what he was like?? It just blows my mind that somehow everybody can be blamed for her actions regarding Joffrey but Sansa herself. Apparently, she can't be expected to understand anything because nobody sat down and slowly explained everything to her using small words (not even when Ned does just that lol). And then they just ignore the fact that Sansa had a crush on Joffery and actively wanted to marry him? To the point of excusing his behavior when she witnessed his cruelty first-hand? Then they pretend that she was just "coping" with her engagement when she actively argued against Ned breaking it and went to Cersei because she thought she could stop him from doing so. There's no way they like her actual character if this is what they have to come up with to cope with her writing.
