Cloud Cost Optimization Strategies to Scale Without Wasting Resources
As startups and enterprises increasingly move to the cloud, one issue continues to surface: unexpectedly high cloud bills. While cloud platforms offer incredible scalability and flexibility, without proper optimization, costs can spiral out of control—especially for fast-growing businesses.
This guide breaks down proven cloud cost optimization strategies to help your company scale sustainably while keeping expenses in check. At Salzen Cloud, we specialize in helping teams optimize cloud usage without sacrificing performance or security.
💡 Why Cloud Cost Optimization Is Crucial
When you first migrate to the cloud, costs may seem manageable. But as your application usage grows, so do compute instances, storage, and data transfer costs. Before long, you’re spending thousands on idle resources, over-provisioned servers, or unused services.
Effective cost optimization enables you to:
🚀 Scale operations without financial waste
📈 Improve ROI on cloud investments
🛡️ Maintain agility while staying within budget
🧰 Top Strategies to Optimize Cloud Costs
Here are the key techniques we use at Salzen Cloud to help clients control and reduce cloud spend:
1. 📊 Right-Size Your Resources
Start by analyzing resource usage. Are you running t3.large instances when t3.medium would do? Are dev environments left running after hours?
Use tools like:
AWS Cost Explorer
Azure Advisor
Google Cloud Recommender
These tools analyze usage patterns and recommend right-sized instances, storage classes, and networking configurations.
2. 💤 Turn Off Idle Resources
Development, testing, or staging environments often run 24/7 unnecessarily. Schedule them to shut down after work hours or when not in use.
Implement automation with:
Lambda scripts or Azure Automation
Instance Scheduler on AWS
Terraform with time-based triggers
3. 💼 Use Reserved or Spot Instances
Cloud providers offer deep discounts for reserved or spot instances. Use:
Reserved Instances for predictable workloads (up to 72% savings)
Spot Instances for fault-tolerant or batch jobs (up to 90% savings)
At Salzen Cloud, we help businesses forecast and reserve the right resources to save long-term.
4. 📦 Leverage Autoscaling and Load Balancers
Autoscaling allows your application to scale up/down based on traffic, avoiding overprovisioning.
Pair this with intelligent load balancing to distribute traffic efficiently and prevent unnecessary compute usage.
5. 🧹 Clean Up Unused Resources
It’s common to forget about:
Unattached storage volumes (EBS, persistent disks)
Idle elastic IPs
Old snapshots or backups
Unused services (e.g., unused databases or functions)
Set monthly audits to remove or archive unused resources.
6. 🔍 Monitor Usage and Set Budgets
Implement detailed billing dashboards using:
AWS Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection
Azure Cost Management
GCP Billing Reports
Set up alerts when costs approach defined thresholds. Salzen Cloud helps configure proactive cost monitoring dashboards for clients using real-time metrics.
7. 🏷️ Implement Tagging and Resource Management
Tag all resources by:
Environment (prod, dev, staging)
Department (engineering, marketing)
Owner or team
This makes it easier to track, allocate, and reduce costs effectively.
8. 🔐 Optimize Storage Tiers
Move rarely accessed data to cheaper storage classes:
AWS S3 Glacier / Infrequent Access
Azure Cool / Archive Tier
GCP Nearline / Coldline
Always evaluate storage lifecycle policies to automate this process.
⚙️ Salzen Cloud’s Approach to Smart Scaling
At Salzen Cloud, we take a holistic view of cloud cost optimization:
Automated audits and policy enforcement using Terraform, Kubernetes, and cloud-native tools
Cost dashboards integrated into CI/CD pipelines
Real-time alerts for overprovisioning or anomalous usage
Proactive savings plan strategies based on workload trends
Our team works closely with engineering and finance teams to ensure visibility, accountability, and savings at every level.
🚀 Final Thoughts
Cloud spending doesn’t have to be unpredictable. With a strategic approach, your startup or enterprise can scale confidently, innovate quickly, and spend smartly. The key is visibility, automation, and continuous refinement.
Let Salzen Cloud help you cut cloud costs—not performance.

Idea Generation - Researching into abnormal/unique controllers 1
Train Simulator Handbuilt Cab-Rig
youtube
This cab-simulator controller has been something that has interested me for multiple months leading up until now, there are many small aspects of it to pick apart that work as their own unique controllers to look at.
Throttle
Firstly - The throttle controller consists of a genuine train throttle handle, bought from what I assume to be either an antique shop or straight from a scrapyard, i've been considering looking into small gameplay loops/ideas surrounding trains that I could create in this timeframe due to the pure reason that I have one of these controllers at home that could potentially be rigged up to the Makey-Makey.
I'm not entirely sure how this person has rigged it up, although it's on some sort of button system where you can notch up and down, i'd be more interested in sorting out a way to input it on an axis, almost like it's sat on top of a dial so the further I turn it the more it would accelerate. Accessibility considerations on this controller idea are positive, it's able to be controlled with one arm, and is tactile in the sense that it gives audibly impaired players physical feedback as to what notch of throttle they're in.
Radio/Signaller Cab Phone
I've seen somebody use a rotary phone already as a controller although I haven't seen a digital phone used like this, personally I think it would be an amazing pair for a game like Coldline in where you have to navigate a frustrating phone menu. I feel like I could generate some interesting ideas on a mindmap from this.
In the video, it's rigged up and used as a signallers phone, the audio comes through both speakers and a speaker in the handset itself and progresses the game as it would using keyboard input, The only issue I have is that this is far less accessible for deaf people, but is also at the same time much more suited for the visually impaired, it could be an interesting way of implementing audio description, as the player could hold it up to their ear and be the only person hearing it. I think this could be improved by having subtitles on the large screen.
Conclusion
From my research I have concluded that an 80's digital handset and an old train lever would be two very interesting ideas for alternative controllers - I'll be expanding on these controllers to brainstorm game ideas that could surround them.

Unneeded update for this is that one of my coworkers is going back to college so we are done a person for Sunday and the two others are on vacation that Sunday so there is literally no one else who can work but me and Zach.
I have now signed myself up to go in at 930 to open with my boss because there is no way he could do it on his own
[Id/ edited screenshot of work schedule. It says Shyler and Zachary are working eleven - seven on Sunday]
Anyways love the schedule update. We open at ten. What the fuck happened here
#it's gonna be a day. but i think i can make my boss work hotline so i can do coldline and prep#I'm like already planning exactly how im gonna manage my dau. wnd if i should actually show up earlier than 930#but alas that would put me into too much overtime

03/09 COLDLINE by Adam Pype
https://papercookies.itch.io/coldline
Third game by Adam Pype that I have played.
It's a quick demonstration of how the auto attendant/custom support phone systems nowadays can result in an nuclear Armageddon(not really...) I really liked the premise and trope along the line of Dr.Strangelove - accidental nuclear war + laughs and comedy
Game design thoughts
The overall design of this game, almost every part of it, is direct , simple and clean - (1)The premise/background is delivered in text like SW opening crawl style (2) you have a map in front of you, indicating the real-time position of the missile (3) a big digital clock counting down above you (4) the big red phone looks so generic and simple and is your only agency; the controls are simple too only keypads and the pound key - All these actually give emphasis and contract to the only and most convoluted part of the gameplay itself - the fking phoneline and the automated customer support system. Everything becomes naturally funnier with this setup.
The actual phone conversation with the automated system is clever and funny too. You basically go back and forth with the automated voice until you realize how much bureaucracy has destroyed and can destroy humanity. Player is forced to navigate meaningless automated dialogues to get the information they need to stop/interject the missile, not realizing some of the information is more/less on the surface than they appear to be. It's subverting expectation in a really funny(but on-the-edge annoying way) - but then the player/me, for whoever has ever called into an automated voice box before, started having this inner dialogue "what do I expect from an automated system anyway nowadays? " because in truth it's all designed and engineered to waste our time and increase delay - It breaks the 4th wall because that's essentially our daily struggle too!
