'Moneyball' - One of the Best Baseball Movies Ever
WRITER’S NOTE: This movie review was written in 2012. I present it now as the latest baseball season has now begun. “Moneyball” is, for my money, the best baseball movie since “Bull Durham” as, like Ron Shelton’s 1988 classic, it takes a very unique look at this American pastime and the players who inhabit it. Whereas most baseball movies are about rising to the occasion and winning the big…

Day 12: American Idiot
Green Day
September 21, 2004
Tumblr media
Album Art by Chris Bilheimer
A Punk Rock Opera. American Idiot is a concept album inspired by the political climate in America and events such as the Presidency of George W. Bush, 9/11, and the Iraq War. The basic plot tells the story of the Jesus of Suburbia, a lower-middle class American teen who hates his home town and leaves for the city, St. Jimmy (who is an alter ego of the Jesus of Suburbia) and Whatsername.
Green Day wanted to expand their punk rock sound by adding elements of New Wave, Latin, and Polka Music. They took inspiration from the albums The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie, Tommy by the Who, and Quadrophenia by the Who. They listened to Broadway cast recordings and even contemporary music like Eminem, Kanye West, and Lincoln Park for inspiration. According to Billie Joe Armstrong they wanted to take "Classic rock and roll elements, kick out the rules, put more ambition in, and make it current."
They were originally working on an album called Cigarettes and Valentines, but the master tapes were stolen. They decided to start their next record from scratch and the masterpiece that is American Idiot was born. It won a bunch awards including a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2005.

@garadinervi has been posting these from The First Scout. I was fascinated by the art, but now am wondering about the math. Could kids do something like this to represent their school? And learn some indigenous culture besides... So, gathering in one place.

High school students across San Francisco walked out of classrooms Wednesday to protest Israel’s bombing of Gaza and demand a cease-fire in the Israel-[Palestine] war, organizers said. The walkout came a day after a hospital in Gaza City was destroyed, killing hundreds of Palestinians and others sheltering there... High school students have called for nationwide walkouts to “protest the ongoing killing of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli military and to demand an immediate cease-fire,” the San Francisco-based Arab Resource & Organizing Center said in a statement. At 10:30 a.m., Yousra C., a student who declined to give her last name and is president of the Middle Eastern North African Club at Galileo High School, walked out of AP calculus to lead a protest. She was wearing a white hijab and the flag of Palestine on her cheek. She estimated that 150 or 200 students joined the protest, who she said were excused from class to take part in the protest.  They marched around the block at their Marina District school, waving flags and carrying banners. Some chanted in Arabic, “With our souls, with our blood, we will bring you back, Gaza.” “This is our first walkout, but if the civilians of Palestine continue to be bombed, we will continue to speak,” said Yousra, who described herself as Algerian and expressed frustration that the history of Palestine is not taught at her school. [...] “Students know what’s going on, and they want to protest against the genocide,” said another marcher at Galileo High, a junior named Halima L., who declined to share her last name. “This is not about the bombing of the hospital. It’s about 75 years of oppression.” The students did three or four laps around campus, accompanied by a car with its horn blaring and students hanging out of windows waving the Palestinian flag. They finished with a final chant and rally in front of the school before ending the protest by midday. At a morning news conference on the steps of City Hall organized by the Arab Resource & Organizing Center, activists made urgent calls of their own before the 10:30 a.m. walkout. San Francisco Supervisor Hillary Ronen — the only elected official to participate in the news conference — called on President Biden and other congressional leaders to do “everything in their power” to secure a cease-fire. “Every day since Oct. 7, I have been living with a pit in my stomach. I know many of you here live with that pit every day,” she said. “Collective punishment is a war crime, and what I watch Israel doing every day in Gaza is just that.” [...] In Oakland, about 30 students gathered at Lake Merritt, holding signs that read “California stands with Gaza” and “Stop killing the kids,” according to social media posts. [...] Another speaker at the City Hall event, Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, called the war a campaign of mass killing.  “This is not an open-air prison,” she said of conditions in Gaza. “It is a concentration camp.” [...] San Francisco parent Dr. Manal Elkarra, whose family is from Gaza City, listed the casualties from the blast at a Gaza hospital that Palestinian officials say has left hundreds dead. “Doctors in the Gaza strip are pleading for your help,” she said, choking back tears. Battling Israel’s blockade of water, power or help to Gaza, medical professionals are running out of body bags, have been forced to reuse surgical gloves, and store the deceased in ice cream trucks due to an overflow of corpses coming through the morgues, she said.
-- From "S.F. students walk out to protest Israel airstrikes on Gaza after Hamas attack" by Jessica Flores, Annie Vainshtein, and Sam Whiting for San Francisco Chronicle, 18 Oct 2023
The Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) lists the participating schools as Life Academy, Oakland International, Latitude High, Fremont High, and MetWest High in Oakland; Galileo Academy, Lowell High, Balboa High, Mission High, San Francisco School of the Arts, Ida B. Wells High, Lincoln High, George Washington High, June Jordan School, and City College of San Francisco in San Francisco; Oceana High in Pacifica; and Berkeley High in Berkeley. Over 1700 students are said to have participated.

Notebook #15! The binding on this is absolutely trash, and nearly all the pages are falling out. Still, it holds ink very well. Scans of select doodles/journal entries below.
Tumblr media
A brief summary of my trip to Oakland and San Francisco for a Halloween bar crawl. It was not a very long bar crawl, but I did feel like crawling at the end of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: I'm a huge AJR fan! Every album release I start crying. Lyrics are, "I wish I was me, whoever that is / I could just be, and not give a shit / Hey I'll be whatever, makes you a fan / 'Cause I don't know who the hell I am / ONE! TWO! PANDEMONIUM!"
Right: Maplestory had a Hyper Tera Burning Event or something like that. I started playing in the middle of my first semester in grad school. No one was happy about this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Observations from when I visited the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Arts, and some Bruce & Yoichi doodles.
Right: Me being so so so normal about treating Prime Torino as a dress-up doll. He'd look so good in long skirts. I know this in my heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: There was a month when I really got into Sandman! Not the Netflix show, though the fanfic certainly bases all the dreamling fic off that... I thought the early comic version of Dream was hilariously pathetic and weird. Huge pity that the hair and robes don't translate to real life.
Right: Stardew Valley came out with the update, and I fell right back into my habit of marathoning SDV into the wee hours of night. That's Lark. He's an older Farmer who's surprisingly hardy for having been an IT guy for a decade and some change.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: The first rough draft for All for One's "Abbey" PMV. As you can probably tell, camera shots are not my strong suit, and the sequence went a little off the rails at the end.
Right: I don't know what to tell you guys. I dipped my toe in the FFXV AO3 archive and then I found The Promdyn (TYL!Prompto x Redeemed!Ardyn) fic of all time, and now they haunt me. Everyone else is posting "Bad Touch Chancellor Izunia" and I'm here contemplating Ardyn's whimpers.mp4.

Bible Conference in 1968 was strange:
The annual Spring Bible Conference is one of the outstanding features of the year at Bob Jones University. Running for eight days, the conference brings to the campus outstanding, orthodox Bible teachers, pastors and evangelists. All regular academic work is suspended for the conference which takes the place of a spring vacation.
This year's conference was considered one of the school's best. More off-campus guests were present than for any other event in the school's history.
Services were held in the 3,000-seat Rodeheaver Auditorium, and overflow crowds watched the services via closed-circuit television in the 1,000-seat Concert Center. For most of the sessions it was necessary to use a third auditorium the War Memorial Chapel, which has a seating capacity of about 700+.
Tumblr media
Guest speakers at the conference included Dr. Robert T. Ketcham, national consultant (retired), General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, Chicago, Ill.; Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley, pastor of Raven hill Free Presbyterian Church, Belfast, Ireland, moderator of Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, editor of "The Revivalist," "Protestant Telegraph." Also, Dr. Charles S. Poling, pastor of the Church of All Christian Faiths, Phoenix, Ariz.; Dr. Glen Schunk of Greenville, evangelist; and Dr. H. C. Slade, pastor of Jarvis Street Baptist Church, Toronto, Canada.
Tumblr media
The next Bible Conference will be March 30-April 7, 1968. Among the speakers scheduled are Dr. G. Archer Weniger, pastor of the Foothill Boulevard Baptist Church of Oakland, Calif; Dr. Noel Smith, editor of the Baptist Bible Tribune," Springfield, Mo.; Dr. Bob Wells, pastor of the Central Baptist Church of Anaheim, Calif.; Rev. John Balyo, pastor of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and John Stormer, author of' "None Dare Call It Treason."
John Stormer was an anti-communist speaker.
And then a WBJU story:
WBJU, the student-manned carrier-current radio station, is now in its second year of operation. Located in the radio television wing of the Fine Arts Building, the fully equipped radio station is designed to be heard in the eight student dormitories.
Though staffed entirely by radio students, the station's operations are supervised by Robert Pratt, chairman of the division of speech and head of the department of radio and television, and other members of the radio-television faculty.
According to Mr. Pratt, the carrier-current station serves as a "laboratory training unit for students who have dedicated themselves to using broadcasting as a Christian ministry." He said that the station also endeavors to supplement the listening interests of the student body.
The university grants the bachelor of arts degree in radio and television and the bachelor of science degree in broadcast engineering. WBJU is in addition to the commercial stations operated by Bob Jones University -- WMUU and  WMUU-FM in Greenville and WAVO and WAVO-FM in the Atlanta, Ga., area.

OAKSTOP BOUGHT A BUILDING!
Coworking and event space company Oakstop has purchased its flagship office building in downtown Oakland at 1721 Broadway in partnership with San Francisco cultural nonprofit Community Arts Stabilization Trust (@castsf). The sale closed April 11.
Oakstop began as a 4,000-square-foot tenant there in 2014 and gradually expanded to occupy the entire building in the last year, founder and CEO Trevor Parham said Tuesday. The company provides work, event and gallery space to entrepreneurs with a particular focus on communities of color.
“We’ve always viewed the space as a resource for the whole community with a specific focus on prioritizing the needs of the Black community,” said Trevor Parham, founder and CEO of Oakstop. “Black-owned real estate represents an even greater resource and catalyzes even more possibilities for creating long term social and economic impact for the whole community.”

Another entry to be posted from my journal:
11/11/2020 Wednesday 8:14pm
Really crummy day—Strange energy. People are mean, controlling. Except Raymond P. Talked to him through glass at minimum housing. They’ve set up a bank of phones. Hard, round metal stools on either side of the glass.
I had been listening to a KPFA story re: Photographer Dorothea Lange, who shot pictures of “A Public Defender, an attorney—maybe in the 1940’s Oakland, who represented the poor, I think for free. But, Dorothea photographed the accused, their families and the cops—who were portrayed as evil Darth Vader—and, it struck me—as I sat there—talking to Raymond/-his black mask not covering his nose—his eyes big liquid pools of question —it struck me that we were the modern equivalent of that Public Defender series of photos Dorothea did. And MAC and I and his friend David—-who drove MAC here last night so I could give him money to liberate his RV—so MAC could come in out of the cold—were the modern equivalent—of the walking wounded pictures Dorothea took of 1930’s people enduring the dust bowl . And, my journal entries around the jails and the courts and the streets are like her photos. Verbal snap shots of the plague of incarceration and the relentless, endless hikes that street life is today. Like Dorothea, I don’t join groups to organize. Like Dorothea—my writing—journal entries— are my movement art pieces—-hopefully leading to change—like her photos do—. End of Entry. Note: Just googled Dorothea Lange. The Public Defender. Alameda County Courthouse, California The photos were actually taken between 1955 and 1957. I went to visit Raymond P., a client of mine, at the minimum housing unit of the jail. It is located about 1/2 mile behind the Jail in Ceres, California. MAC was a friend of mine who had lived with me off and on for 4 years, but, eventually became homeless. We are still in contact. So, this entry is an example of how you can use the journal to paint a verbal portrait of the events of your day. And, how to use the work of someone like Dorothea Lange to inspire your journal work and life.

Memories Live On
December 7th is quite possibly the strangest day of the year for me. As you may have read in my previous posts, July 20th is right up there, but I think this one still holds the title.
I saw flags everywhere at half staff, remembering one of the darkest days in this country's history. The attack on Pearl Harbor was brutal, calculated, and so deadly, taking 2,390 American lives and tormenting countless others for years to come.
I worked in healthcare for over 30 years, 20 of those for a home healthcare agency. One of the many memorable moments in that time was when I filled in for a caregiver to help a gentleman do some shopping as he was blind. When I pulled up into his driveway, there's no way I could have been prepared for who I was about to meet.
This gentleman served in the military and was stationed in Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. We discussed the events of that day while we did his shopping, and he told me about having to jump off the deck into the water and then having to swim through the dead bodies to shore. Hearing about this event from him was more informative than any book or video or movie I could have ever seen.
Like many of the surviving men that day, this guy was still in the service 3 years later when the door to his "U" boat slammed down and he charged toward the beaches at Normandy. I was simply in awe.
We finished shopping somehow, and when I was done helping him unload his groceries, he said he really appreciated the help. I chuckled and told him it paled next to his help, and headed out to try and wrap my mind around surviving both of those events.
While my Grandmother was still with us, she would occasionally joke that the Japanese weren't the only ones that dropped bombs that day. You see, my father was born on the same day.
He lived an eventful life for sure, fathering 5 sons, adopting a daughter, and impacting countless lives before he left us in July 2007. Countless memories, good and bad, flood my mind (as feeble as it can be), and like happens too often these days I laugh and cry in memory.
As a little kid, my memories are of World Series games in Oakland followed by the parades, of sitting on the sky cycle of Evel Knievel, and enjoying our "Reggie" candy bars while we wrote with our "Reggie" pens (don't ask me where they ended up). My love of baseball was born during this time and it's still raging today.
My father was a custom painter/pinstriper who did incredible work despite having his fingers chopped short by a tool press accident. He was the type of guy you would take high dollar customs to in order to finish them off just right. His work was in shows all over, and his love of the arts still lives in us.
Like so many people, my parents divorced when I was young. They both remarried, with my mom taking us and relocating to Phoenix in 1977. This meant that there would be summer trips where my brother and I would go and stay with our father and his new wife for a couple weeks. We had a blast, year after year.
As I became a teenager and then a young adult, my stupidity created a gap in our relationship. I blamed him for all my shortcomings and basically tuned him out. I visited for the last time in 1993. There would be random contacts after that, but I think the last was around 1999 or 2000.
I remember the call I got to tell me he had passed away. It was such a weird feeling, like an old friend you were close with in high school, but hadn't talked to since you graduated. I felt bad for my brothers and sister, but it wasn't until after I had gone to California to go to my brother's wedding that it hit me.
The older I get, the more times I think it would be nice to chat with him and share stories, looking back and laughing at our amusing lives.
