Yukimura Sanada x Male!OC

     The stinging on his right cheek was the only thing he could feel—the only thing he could think about. He was leaning towards the ground, his trembling fingers grazing the tender flesh of his cheek as his eyes met back up with a livid Yukimura. His face as red as his clothes and his eyes as fearsome as a tiger's, Yukimura loomed over Thai with only one thing in his mind.      "Where are you really going?" Yukimura growled softly, trying to hold back his anger.

     "Y-Yuki..." Thai muttered as he stood back up. "What're you—"

     Thai was suddenly backhanded again hard by Yukimura, nearly sending him to the ground. "Answer me!" he shouted, grabbing Thai by the arm and yanking him up to eye level. Thai hesitated to speak, his brain rattling, only to end up being shoved against a nearby wall. "Where are you going to go after tonight, Thai," Yukimura ordered once again, pinning Thai by the top of his chest.

     "Yuki, please," Thai begged softly, struggling against his sheer strength. "You don't—"

     "That's an order, Thai! Tell me where! Let me hear you say it!"

     Thai felt the bridge of his nose grow heavy and stuffed, the bead of a tear starting to form in the corner of his eye. His intuition before was right—Yukimura knew. 

     But, so soon? 

     That fierce gaze in Yukimura's eyes was like from before, a look that petrified and horrified him, shaking his very bones and chilling him to the core. He did not know what to do, but the immense pressure from Yukimura chipped away at his resolve, and at last, he caved.      "...I'm going to Ueda," Thai finally said, his words nearly choked up. "I'm going to Ueda."

     Yukimura gasped, but his slight shock immediately turned to fury again as he shoved Thai again against the wall, a pained yelp erupting from his throat. "And you didn't tell me!?"he roared. "Why didn't you at least tell me!?"

     "Urgh..." Thai grunted, trying to wriggle himself into a more comfortable position. "Lord Shingen made me promise to—"

     "Lord Shingen?" Yukimura growled.

     Yukimura's hold on Thai lessened, the latter dropping to the ground on all fours. The tear in Thai's eyes had already fallen down his stinging cheeks, his mind in shambles. He closed his eyes, wiping the tears from his cheek with his forearm as Yukimura paced around.      "I don't get it. Lord Shingen and I agreed that you would be mine. I looked after you the entire time you started serving me! I thought I had another friend I could trust wholeheartedly," Yukimura said, his hands clenching up into fists. "A friend that would never lie to me about something like this!"

     Thai couldn't look him in the eyes. "I was just...following orders," he muttered, staying on his knees and hands, staring down at the ground.

     "You were supposed to be my friend, Thai," Yukimura grunted. "You already know how much going back home meant for me. You may have been under Lord Shingen's orders, but surely you could have said something! Anything!?"

     Thai continued to stay silent in his groveling, wondering what to say or if anything he could say would even help at this point. Thai noticed Yukimura's sword stuffed in his obi. Would Yukimura go so far?

     "Nothing? Really?" Yukimura scoffed, his hand falling to his side in disappointment. He huffed angrily, glaring at Thai. "Not even a 'sorry?'" 

     Thai kept his head down, almost kneeling as if begging for forgiveness. Yuki scoffed, his cheeks flushed with red anger, only being more infuriated with Thai's silent response. 

     "I should've known," Yukimura finally grunted. "I guess since you don't even want to go back to your home, you don't care about anyone else's."

     Thai slammed the ground with his hands and shot up to his feet, stomping his foot on the ground. "Goddammit, Yukimura!" Thai suddenly roared out, Yuki nearly jumping back. It was now his turn to be mad, tears streaming down the corners of his eyes, his cheeks flush red. "No me chingues—how fucking dare you! We chose to lie to you because Shingen knew you would react this way! Y, si mira! You-you're-e—está me seguindo e me empurrando contra a porra de uma parede! Você é um merda de merda—o que você ia fazer quando foi para—”

    "Would’ya speak Japanese! I can't understan—"

    "Oh, fuck off!" Thai shouted back in English.

     Yukimura and Thai stood off, their glares locked with each other as silence befell the inn. Thai was breathing heavily, sniffling every once and a while. Yukimura's glare, meanwhile, had gradually dissolved into a look of shock.

     What was Yukimura thinking? Thai gritted his teeth and pointed at Yuki, his speech reverting back to Japanese, saying, "Just because I don't want to go back to my home doesn't mean I don't want you to go back to yours one day! I know how too damn much it means to you, and I wouldn't do anything to stop you. Hell, if it was up to me, I'd probably carry your ass there my damn self. So, yeah! I lied to you about that. I lied because I knew you would follow me in Ueda and immediately shit will hit the fan!"

    "'Hit the—'?"

    "It's a me-no-w-w-you—Zip it!"Thai shouted, his voice booming. "I'm talking right now! You make it to Ueda—then what!? Retake the town by your lonesome? Steal something back from the castle and hope to the Gods that no one recognizes you? I get it—you're upset I lied to your face. Go ahead, be mad, upset—hell, don't even talk to me anymore for as long as I'm here, but don't you dare assume I'm not your friend, and don't you dare accuse me of being inconsiderate of your wish to go back home just because I don't wanna even go back to mine!"

     The scampering of feet alerted the two as a group of people rushed towards them. Thai immediately recognized Sasuke leading the group, but further examination revealed that the group was entirely composed of Kasugayama shinobi, including Saizou and even Rokurobei.      "Thai," Sasuke said, cautiously approaching the foreigner. "Is everything—"

     "I'm fine—I'm fine," Thai huffed, Yukimura's other vassals and men approaching their lord.

     Great, Thai thought. Here he was, half-naked in the middle of the inn's courtyard accused by the one person in this war-torn era that he looked up to for guidance. Now, everyone probably thought he was the bad guy in all of this. Of course, they would treat Sasuke with more leniency over him; it wouldn’t be the first time fingers were pointed at the foreigner. He scoffed, wiping his tears as he shook his head.      "I don't need this," he simply said walking off.

     "Where are you going," Yukimura called out.

    ��"I already fucking told you," Thai harshly replied without turning his head.

     Thai quickly left, leaving Yukimura, Sasuke, and the others behind. They merely stared in silence at the retreating foreigner, a few of them noticing the large tattoo that spread across his back and shoulders. 

     He stormed off back inside his room, throwing back on his clothes and haori before storming off again out of the inn, walking down the road until out of sight from the inn before taking refuge against a nearby tree. He leaned his back against the trunk and closed his eyes before breathing slowly in and out to try and calm down.      That was why Thai would never lie to a close friend, because he knew it would always come down to this. He would always hear the yelling that rang through his ears, feel the warm tears streaming down his face, and see those glowing, vengeful eyes that stared right at his very soul. He was never able to take it as well as most people.

     He let out a pained exhale, still feeling the pain on his cheeks and chest where Yukimura slapped and pinned him respectively. His still trembling hand reached inside his kimono, taking out a foreign object: a vape pen.

     Back when Thai and Sasuke retrieved Sasuke's bag from the first wormhole they investigated together, Sasuke found inside a solar battery charger. It was a God-sent gift for them. The duo agreed to keep everything on the down low; mostly it was used to charge their phones—Sasuke was able to look at downloaded files pertaining to his wormhole studies, and Thai was able to listen to music at night when he was alone. However, there was a different reason Thai needed the charger.

     "Goddammit," he muttered under his breath, placing the mouth of the pen between his lips. He took a long inhale, holding it for a quick second before letting out the smoke in a thick, yet clear line. He shook his head, feeling the nicotine seep into his bloodstream. His head became light, his heart rushing. Thai nearly fell from the sudden rush, his two legs planting themselves hard into the ground to prevent himself from falling.      He slipped the pen back into his kimono, rubbing his face with both of his hands.

     "Why couldn't have I just told him,"Thai muttered, lightly smacking the side of his skull with his lightly-balled-up fists. “I should’ve just fucking told ‘im.”

     As much as he was flustered and furious at Yukimura accusing him of being inconsiderate to the point of betraying his interests, Thai was disappointed in himself. He meant what he said; Yukimura was his friend, and lying to him was equally as painful for him as it was to the Peerless Warrior.      What was going to happen now? Yukimura and his entourage were here, but Sasuke and Thai are still on a mission. Yukimura would most likely take it over, and a new plan would form. But, what was he trying to get at? Would he even trust Thai with the new mission if there was one?

     ...of course not. No one would trust a liar, and Thai was no exception to that. 

     Thai quickly took out the pen again and took another long puff, but a startling from above him caught him off guard. He hacked up the smoke as he slipped the pen back inside, looking to his side to see a dark figure jump down. It was Sasuke.      Thai sighed. "Leave me alone, man," he grunted, rubbing his brow.

     "I never knew you smoked," Sasuke said, keeping his distance.

     Thai's eyes shrugged. "It's bad, I know," Thai softly said. "I just...need a second to think. To calm down." Sasuke leaned on the tree next to Thai, the latter closing his eyes. The two stood in silence, hearing nothing but the soft breeze of the night wind. Thai sighed again. "Man, you scared the shit outta me when you popped out of nowhere," Thai said. "How do you do that?"

     "I'm a ninja, nin-nin,"Sasuke light-heartedly quipped.

     Thai rolled his eyes, stifling a giggle. "Fair enough. Any reason why you're standing out here with me?" Thai asked. "Shouldn't you be...I dunno...chopping it up with the others?"      "Studies show that when one is at a low point, it's best to have a friend around," Sasuke said.

     Thai scoffed amusingly. "Am I your friend, Sasuke?"

     "Sure we are," he said. "We have spent sufficient together time in this era to be candidates for 'Best Friends.'"

     Thai's eyebrow raised. "Together time? I think you and I have different meanings of 'together time.' For a second there, I thought you were hitting on me."

     Sasuke snickered, pushing up his glasses.

     "So, what happens now?" Thai asked. "I'm pretty sure Yuki ain't gonna up and leave anytime soon."

     "Yes, that does put a damper on our plans," Sasuke said. "Right now, Kasugayama is probably in an uproar. Who knows if they'll send for more people to intercept us? But, for now, we have Yuki to deal with. Supposedly, he has a plan that we will be going over tomorrow in the morning, but I still don't know what he wants at Ueda. It would be strategical suicide if his plan is to take over the entire city."

     "It doesn't matter," Thai said, "I'm sure he's just gonna either give me the brunt of the work or bench me. He ain't gonna trust me no more."

     "Thai—"

     "Man, for as tactless and pig-headed as this fool is," Thai said, interrupting Sasuke, "he's right about one thing: I lied to him. And, before you say it was just one lie, I lied about going to his home. There may have been something he wanted back there and I wouldn't have known about it until I returned. He would have been devastated, and now he is! I can't believe I allowed myself to do this."

     "Yuki seemed pretty distraught," Sasuke said. "But, I don't think he would go so far as to be negligent to you. Besides, we both lied to him."

     "I don't know, man. I feel like I'm getting the brunt of his anger," Thai argued. "He was upset...calling me inconsiderate, and such. He must have really trusted me. I mean, if we're going by your logic, I would say I spent enough 'together time' with Yuki to be called 'best friends.' He sounded like he saw us that way."

     "Try not to let it get to your head," Sasuke said. "The important thing about ninjas is to remain cool under duress. It'll be a while, but I'm sure Yuki would find it in his heart to forgive you."

     "If only. Life's a mystery, I guess..."

     Sasuke stood up, turning towards Thai. "I'm should head back in. I believe right now they are soaking in the onsen," Sasuke said. "Do you want to come along? I know you've been looking forward to a hot bath."

     Thai shook his head. "I think I'm the last face right now that everyone wants to see," he replied, "You go on ahead. I'll meet you inside."

     "Sure thing." Sasuke took three steps, but turned back to Thai again, who started slumping down the tree. "Thai, may I ask another question."

     "Well...you're already asking, so go for it," Thai replied.

     "...what did you mean you 'don't want to go home?'" Sasuke asked. "Our main plan has not changed. We are still looking for the woman and then the wormhole home. You want to go home, right?"

     "Ah dang, you heard that." Thai shook his head. "That weren't what I meant. Of course, I want to make it out of here. What I meant was Japan ain't my home, in this era or ours. Never was and...never really felt like it really was one." 

     Sasuke looked confused, his brain not functioning for a minute. "W-wait," he said. "You weren't a tourist, I thought. You said you moved to Japan and began working for a telephone company. If Japan isn't your home, then why did you move?"

     Thai nodded, hiding behind the smile-plastered mask as he looked towards the night sky. "They were the cards I was dealt with," he quietly said. "Go on inside. I'll see you tomorrow morning."

     Thai sat down on the base of the tree as Sasuke disappeared into the night. He let the calming sound of the night forest soothe his troubled mind. Inside, he kept admitting to himself that he hurt the man that he looked up to every day ever since he was dropped into this era.

     Yukimura...what a guy. Tactless? Yes. Stubborn? Thai always thought he was more of an actual wild boar between the two. Yet, it was never something that bothered Thai, save for tonight. More often, he was infatuated with Yukimura's own charm: a confident vassal both strong in will and heart that not only inspired his men but took the time to listen and help. He was someone you could confidently abide by, who, although with faulty execution, would reassure you that everything would be fine. And, as righteous as he was in heart, he was equally skilled in strength and physique, a warrior through and through.

     He was amazing, to say the least. Just his stalwart smile alone melted Thai's heart something fierce, his soft gaze in those eyes reassuring.

     "Carahlo," Thai scoffed, "Why am I thinking all of this? The man pinned me up against a wall while I was almost naked."

    Yukimura’s image was plastered in his mind, the only thing he was able to think about. Thai was never as hurt about lying to a friend as he did with Yukimura. That wasn't to say that Thai did not feel bad about lying; there was still a horde of guilt and doubt weighing on his mind already. But, seeing him react like that shook Thai. Thai very well thought he lost his new best friend tonight.

     Obviously, it might be because he was Thai's boss—his lord whom he swore to protect at all costs who can also kill him for treason, but it didn't sound right.

     No. He admired Yukimura's praise and touch, his reassurance and confidence that boosted his morale. He met only a few others that could fit Yukimura's shoes, but even they fall short.      A pang in Thai's heart shook him from his thoughts. Thai scoffed, shaking his head, but his slight smirk relaxed into a frown. 

     He sighed, seeing the new hand dealt to him. 

     There were eleven of them. Yukimura sat at the front of the table with his ten men surrounding it. Saizou and Rokurobei stood to his sides, both Thai and Sasuke intertwined with the several others that made up their band of warriors. There were no smiles, jokes, or coughs. Frowns were plastered on every one of their faces, although, it was noticeable to Thai that the frown Sasuke had on was hiding something that definitely was not tension or stress.      "This infiltration of Ueda will be difficult," Saizou stated. "While both Kai and Shinano are under Oda rule, we know of small villages bordering Ueda that still hold allegiances to both the Takeda and Sanada."      "This gives us a safe place to set up our base of operations as we plan our next move," Rokurobei added. "Likely, they would likely know our faces if we step foot in Ueda, even with disguises on, so, I would advise you, my lord, that we carry on with the plan of both Thai and Sasuke infiltrating Ueda directly to gather information."      Yukimura stayed silent, nodding to them both as he looked down at a map of Ueda.

     "Thai. Sasuke," Saizou called, the two alerted to the raven-haired shinobi. "I understand that this is going against Lord Shingen's wishes and that the consequences when we get back may be dire. You two will play an integral part in this operation, but because our mission puts you two in danger in Kasugayama for treason, we won't force you to stay."

     Thai and Sasuke looked at each other, Sasuke nodding to Thai as the other shrugged his eyes. "I'll choose to stay," Sasuke said. "After all, if I may speak in a casual sense, B.F.F.’s stick together."

     Yukimura raised an eyebrow at Sasuke as the others looked at each other confused. "What about you, Thai?" Saizou asked, everyone's attention now directed at him.

     Thai exhaled softly, looking at Saizou. Time to play the hand dealt to him. "Well...I have nowhere else to go, so....I'll stay."

     "Then it's settled," Saizou said. "We'll set out for this nearby village. From there, we can form a plan as you two infiltrate Ueda. Everyone get ready."

     The entire room simultaneously stood up and started exiting, but Saizou suddenly pulled Thai back. The latter sighed, expecting to see a very annoyed Saizou. However, he turned to see his concerned crimson eyes gazing at Thai, his hand resting on Thai's shoulder.      "Usually, people speak to Lord Yukimura with more respect than you have," Saizou said as he retracted his hand. "Never once had I witnessed someone berate him like that."

     Thai hesitated to speak, whether it was because he was choosing the words to say or too scared to speak the truth. "...sorry I weren't raised to the high standards like the others," Thai plainly spoke, "But I ain't gonna just stand there half-naked in the night being accused of disregarding his ultimate wish."

     Saizou sighed. "To be honest," he said, his tone becoming more relaxed, yet still slightly condescending, "I thought you two would have started to fight each other. I didn't expect this unexpected reunion to be as violent."

     Thai shrugged his eyes. "And what about you, Sensei?" Thai asked. "What do you make of all this?"

     Saizou hesitated to answer, yet said, "While I agree that what we're doing is rushed and extremely dangerous given the circumstances, everyone here is acting on our lord’s wishes. Lord Yukimura decided to go back to Ueda to get something important back from the enemy, and having as many people on our side will aid him in this mission."

     "Hence the rush to get there when we left," Thai said. "I can see why he's angry then. What's he after?"      "A...gunbai," Saizou answered suddenly. "A gunbai that belonged to his father that he used to lead his warriors to battle."      "...a war fan?" Thai asked, "Yukimura...brought you and seven other guys and most likely committed treason...for a war fan?"

     "It's to cover all bases, essentially," Saizou explained, "We can explain more once we get to our next stop. We should get ready." Saizou was ready to leave, yet Thai stepped in front of him. "Hm?"

     "W-wait....look," Thai whispered. He looked outside the door first, making sure no one was eavesdropping on the two before returning his attention to Saizou. "I don't think I'll be able to speak to Yu....Lord Yukimura after last night for a while, but, as much as this is probably going to go wrong once we come back, I promise I'll make sure he is safe. You mark my words."

     "I know," Saizou said with a smile. "Just be sure to also watch out for yourself. As angry at you as he is now, I don't think he wants to see you hurt, either."

     "Highly debatable," Thai said. "All right, I'ma get ready."      By early afternoon, Yukimura and his ten followers pushed on ahead toward Shinano. Yukimura and Saizou led their seven men, all on horseback, with Thai and Sasuke trailing behind, still pulling on their cart. Thai couldn't verbally say this out loud, but at the very least, he wished Yukimura would have brought two spare horses for the two of them to at least make the journey to and from Shinano just a little more comfortable.      "Mas que porra..." Thai winced.

     Thai looked over at Sasuke, who, although pulling his own weight on the cart, was not only deep in thought, but also looked equally as ecstatic.

     "You all right there, Sasuke?" Thai whispered.

     Sasuke nodded. "Thai, do you realize what's happening right now," Sasuke said as if trying to hold back his excitement.

     "...I think right now I'm pulling a cart behind a parade of warriors that could've at least lent us a horse," Thai answered.

     "Well, true, but do you count how many of us there are."

     "Um...'bout eleven, including Yuki. Why?"

     Sasuke shot his "nerding-out" face at Thai, nearly making the latter flinch. "Exactly!" he said. "There's Saizou and Rokurobei, then the Miyoshi twins, Isa and Seikai, following behind. There's Kamanosuke right next to Saizou and Juzou next to Yuki. Kosuke and Uemon rearing their flank and the two of us behind! This is the start of the legendary Sanada Ten Braves!"

     Thai raised his eyebrow. "The who now?"

     "The ten legendary shinobi and samurai that belonged in Yuki's inner circle," Sasuke explained. "They acted as bodyguards who swore their lives to defend their lord from anything and followed him to even the worst battles without question. Historians always debated whether or not the Ten Braves were a legitimate group that existed, yet, here we are!"

     "Interesting," Thai said as he nodded. "...wait...if you're supposed to be Sasuke Sarutobi, then, who am I supposed to technically be? I never took on an alias, and I'm damn well sure that my name won't be found in no history books."

     "Yes...about that," Sasuke said. "While everyone is here, there is one last Brave not accounted for: Nezu Jinpachi."

     Thai's eyes widened slightly. "The pirate? "Thai whispered frantically. "B-but, Yuki killed him?"

     "Right, and now," Sasuke said. "We have unfortunately meddled even more with history, and now you, Thai, seemed to have replaced him."

     "...I'm not changing myself into Nezu," Thai said. "As infuriating as he was to deal with, it won't sit right with me."

      "Oh no, I'm not encouraging you to play the part of Nezu," Sasuke said. "But, to just now be a part of History is so exciting, no?"

     "I guess..." Thai said. Thai looked ahead, zeroing in on Yukimura, who was busy scanning the horizon with nothing but grassland and forest as far as the eye can see. Thai sighed, biting his dry bottom lip.      There was no telling if the rest of the group held the same disgruntled feelings about Thai as Yukimura had last night. It certainly would not help if they did, especially given how some of them were directly involved in making Thai's prior training as a shinobi ten times more difficult with their sabotage. He knew the Miyoshi twins were a devious pair, Kamanosuke a powerhouse and archetypal brawler, and so on and so forth. While Thai doubted they would go out of their way to make sure he would fail in whatever missions Yukimura would give him, he kept the paranoia in the back of his mind.      If this was really the start of the Sanada Ten Braves, then Thai knew that everyone here would make sure that not only would they be victorious in everything they do, but that every little part of the mission would go perfectly. Maybe things would go smoothly. But, like always, Murphy’s Law shared a place with optimism, and Thai would need to pull his weight to avoid catastrophe. 

     "Fuck it," Thai said in plain English. "Let's go make some history."

The Night Shift

Mutual Pining, Hospital AU, almost 3100 words

The Night Shift: There’s nothing more perfect than a match made in heaven - unless it’s a match made from mutual attraction and pining. Paramedic Obi has been under ER doctor Shirayuki’s spell for as long as he can remember - and now he’s going to do something about it. Written by @nalufever & @hidetheremote

Shirayuki bit her thumbnail to the quick, teeth gnawing the soft flesh. Ugh, what an ugly habit. She would never admit nervousness, especially in her line of work; but ever since the promotion to lead ER doctor, she'd been unable to restrain the urge. Sigh. Another manicure ruined.

The major source of her anxiety was Izana. Damn him! He ran Wistal Hospital like a kingdom and he was the absolute monarch - high, mighty and ruthless. It was his idea--separating her from Dr. Zen, keeping them apart like night and day. Her only saving grace was working with her friends, nurse Yuzuri and…

The back doors opened, a patient rushed in by the paramedics.

“We got a gooey one coming in! Hope you like your burrito with red sauce!” Obi sure loved making an entrance.

Shirayuki ran to the hallway, her green eyes sharp enough to catch Obi’s small smile.

“Status, Obi?” Shirayuki grabbed the patient’s bloody hand, checking for a pulse.

“Car accident. Totaled. What a shame. It was a sweet ride…”

“Obi! Status of the patient!”

“Sorry! Patient had a high blood alcohol level. Broken collarbone. Possible concussion.”

Nurses surrounded the patient, hooking up intravenous lines and attaching sensors - working in unison to transfer the young male to a proper gurney. Shirayuki aided each step of the process, directing the junior nurses with a soft but firm voice. “Run a blood type and we need x-rays taken. There could be more broken than a collarbone.”

Obi checked his watch and stepped into the background even further as his crush showed the hospital why she was on the fast-track to becoming one of the best ER doctors in the county, let alone Wistal Hospital. Shirayuki had no idea how adorable she looked, taking charge and being masterful with her obvious skills. It wouldn’t do to be seen oohing and awwing over Shirayuki, so Obi decided to slink away before he betrayed his interest.

Nurse Vanya stepped into his path and fluttered her heavily mascaraed lashes. “Are you off shift soon? Want to grab a drink?”

“That sounds nice, but…” Obi did his best to keep a neutral expression. “...I promised someone else I’d be there for them to talk about a personal matter.”

“I’ll give you a rain-check.” Nurse Vanya threw back her shoulders and not-so-accidentally made her bosoms shake. “Anytime you like, we could discuss our own personal matters.”

“Yeah.” Obi gave a tight smile and nod to the persistent young nurse. “My schedule is busy right now, I’ve got to get back to my ride, right?”

“Of course.”

Another shimmy showcasing cleavage from Nurse Vanya and Obi turned tail to escape. Muttering under his breath, Obi wished his luck ran more towards attracting red-heads. Especially the smart ones with piercing green eyes and an angel’s bedside manner.

Once the patient had stabilized, he was sent off for X-rays, and Shirayuki came out of the room, her bright white lab coat stained with patches of red… sauce. She caught the back side of Obi, his perky and toned butt (Why were her eyes drifting to that part of his body? And how the hell did she even know it was his butt?) rushing out of the hospital.

“Obi!” she shouted, taking off her dirty coat.

Obi turned halfway around, one side of him outside holding the door open. “Yo, Dave! Turn the car off. I gotta take a leak.” He closed the door behind him, then jogged his way back to Shirayuki.

“I, uh…” Shirayuki wasn’t even sure why she had called for him. She had rounds to do, and a bloody patient was making his way into her operating room soon. “I… uh, never mind. It’s been a busy night and…”

“Miss…” Obi scrubbed a hand into his black hair, his gaze flicking down from her eyes to her cleavage.

Noticing his nervous demeanor, Shirayuki looked down at her clothes and she realized she was wearing her low-cut purple blouse. Sometimes she forgot what she wore underneath her coat. She ought to stick to wearing scrubs, but dressing up once in a while wasn’t a bad idea.

Shirayuki crossed her arms against her chest, and Obi lifted his head up immediately, a bright blush forming on his cheeks.

“Can we grab a drink at the end of our shift?” Obi was prepared to act like it was a general friendly, run-of-the-mill offer - but if Shirayuki didn’t run screaming away, he’d consider it the best move of his life.

“Um, that’s…” Shirayuki stopped playing with adjusting her clothes and read the honest intent in Obi’s eyes. “...I’d love to.”

“It’s a date. I’ve gotta go ride herd on Dave, see ya at shift end?”

“It’s a date.” Shirayuki echoed Obi. Crazy. She had to be crazy - but such a wonderful crazy. “Is there anywhere open then?”

“I know a place.”

One of the senior nurses not so subtly gestured to Shirayuki. “Our patient would like your attention.”

Chagrin first and foremost on Shirayuki’s expression, she turned back to her job. “Sorry, Yuzuri. Let’s fix our customer.”

“Looking a bit tired, huh, Yuzuri?” Obi closed the distance between them, a smirk plastered on his face. “Some wrinkles around the eyes there, sweetie.”

“Boy, the day I need your attention is my last day on this Earth. Bye!” she clapped back, giving the paramedic a hard shove.

Hours passed frightfully fast - another car accident after the drunken broken collar bone; this one had been a young inexperienced driver. A female suffering from heavy bleeding cuts from a shattered windshield. It hadn’t been her fault - but she’d needed copious amounts of stitching nonetheless.

The major and minor stresses of the ER ran endlessly - and at shift change, Shirayuki was only too happy to toss her latest bloodied lab coat into the laundry and head to her locker.

“You gonna waste time with Obi?” Nurse Yuzuri needled Shirayuki. “He’s easy on the eyes but he needs a good smack.”

“We’re just friends, Yuzuri.”

“Please. Let me check your pulse right now.” Yuzuri reached for Shirayuki’s wrist. “Bitch, I know you’re lying.” The two played a quick cat-and-mouse chase in the hallway.

Shirayuki couldn’t hide the smile on her face. She glanced at the doors, waiting for Obi to pop in any minute now.

“Shirayuki!” A familiar voice called out. Just before she turned around, the emergency doors opened. Obi walked in, his delicious muscles on display under a tight white cotton t-shirt and illegally tight jeans, his amber eyes focused behind her. His smile faded and he stood frozen at the doorway.

“Shirayuki.” The voice was closer, and she felt a hand on her waist, turning her around.

“Zen. Wh-What the hell are you doing here?” Shirayuki’s breath hitched like she was caught red-handed.

Zen pulled her in, giving her a tight hug. “I wanted to surprise you. Maybe grab breakfast before my shift?”

Shirayuki pulled away, turning her head back to watch the doors shut; Obi, on the other side of the glass doors, hunched and fighting against the cold March wind. “Didn’t we decide to part ways? I can’t handle you, me and your brother in a relationship. I won’t. I refuse.”

“I can’t stop caring about you so easily.” Zen reached out, wanting to tuck the fly-away strand of glistening red hair behind Shirayuki’s ear - but having to pull back as the capable doctor grimaced in warning.

“I get that, but we’re over.” Shirayuki shoved her hand into her pocket and pulled out an elastic, smoothing her hair into a manageable clump, fastening the elastic around and around until her ponytail was tight. “And one day I hope you find someone who fits into your weird family dynamic.”

“Some people actually want to play nice.” Zen shook his head and rolled his eyes - albeit slowly and with the softest of disdain. “My family isn’t very weird and you’d know that if you’d honestly tried to fit in.”

“Zen. Having to try to fit in means something.”

“Shirayuki. Wanting to fit in means something.”

“I don’t have time for this, nor do I want to keep our failed relationship on life support.” Shirayuki held up her hand in a dismissive gesture. “Let’s just agree to disagree. I’m going home - ALONE. Please respect my decision.”

“I respect you.” Zen frowned, tightening his lips and refused to speak further, only giving a half-hearted wave good-bye to his former girlfriend as she stomped out of the emergency doors. Once Shirayuki was out of earshot, Zen sighed and rubbed his forehead. Her and him in a relationship made sense - but - once they’d gone further than just friends, it had crumbled.

Nurse Vanya sidled over to Zen and gave him her best smile. “I’ve got lots of time.”

Shirayuki expected to find Obi lurking around her car and when she didn’t see him there she pulled out her phone to send him a text. Immediately she heard a distinctive snippet of music, ‘Notorious B.I.G.’s Big Poppa’ - but moving away, getting harder to hear. “Hey! Did you forget about me?” Shirayuki abandoned her car and jogged down the alleyway to Obi. “Hey!” This time her voice held real ire. “You promised me a drink!”

Obi stopped like he’d been shot, spine ramrod stiff and then slumping in defeat. He let his head hang low and shrugged, glancing at Shirayuki as she lightly touched his shoulder. “I figured you might have gone with the better offer.”

“Hmmf! Better? Hah! A promise is a promise, isn’t it? I don’t take them lightly - I agreed to grab a drink with you.” Shirayuki moved in front of her friend, crossing her arms and frowning. “What’s your problem?”

Obi opened his car door, he turned to Shirayuki, his lips in a thin straight line. “No problem here,” he said, eyes flicking down like he was hiding something. “I’m a bit too tired. Raincheck?”

Shirayuki fought the exasperated sigh coming out. He was lying to her, and she wanted to desperately wring out the truth from him, but the damn cold wind was getting the best of her. She blew into her uncovered hands.

“You should get into your car,” Obi said, getting inside his. He raised his voice. “And go home.” The car engine roared and Shirayuki took the hint. The wheels spun and smoked, leaving skid marks and then his car zoomed down the road.

She ran back to her car, almost slipping on the black ice in the parking lot. Yanking open the door she flopped inside, banging her head against the steering wheel, making it honk. “Fuck.” Closing her eyes for a bit, Shirayuki let her sour mood and tiredness take over her body. Although the warmth and comfort of her bed were tempting, Obi’s rejection ate away at her. Taking out her phone she googled ‘bars’ into her maps app. The first selection was open at 4:00 AM. “Fuckit. I don’t need Obi’s company. I’m gonna grab a drink anyway.”

The Greenhouse was a cute name and it sounded like the perfect antidote to chase away the winter blahs. The alleyway had more than a few unfortunate homeless people taking cover so she parked under a streetlight, though the sun was close to rising.

As she walked into the bar, the bell jingled and a few patrons turned their heads to look at the fresh meat. It was quite filled for such an early time (or late?). She headed over to the bartender who was wiping down the counter.

“Are you serving breakfast right now?” She wasn’t particularly hungry, but she didn’t want to drink on an empty stomach. A mimosa would be nice.

The bartender looked annoyed like Shirayuki was a simpleton. He turned his head slightly, lifting a thumb at his back. She flushed red with embarrassment. She couldn’t believe she’d missed the large chalkboard behind him: BREAKFAST SERVED ALL DAY.

“One mimosa, please.”

Nodding, he wiped the counter once more, then moved to the other side to make her cocktail.

Shirayuki spun around in her stool, then stopped abruptly at the familiar amber eyes sitting in a corner booth…with a brunette across from him. The back of the woman’s head was all Shirayuki could see, but she could only imagine that the mystery woman was gorgeous and definitely lively, considering that Obi seemed to be doting on her every word.

Mouth dry and stomach churning, she rummaged in her purse, pulling out her wallet, not noticing her work badge escape. Slamming a ten dollar bill on the counter, Shirayuki rushed out of the bar. The last thing she heard was the bartender shouting, “Hey! You forgot your…”

Whatever the hell she’d forgotten, she knew for damn sure - pieces of her heart were left shattered all over the pristine counter. Obi had canceled on her to go on another date.

Next shift found Shirayuki dragging herself to the hospital’s employee entrance after scant sleep. After leaving the bar, she’d occupied her mind with baking cookies. Yuzuri had better appreciate her burnt chocolate chip cookies, she said to herself. She reached inside her purse, fingers searching for her badge.

She raised her eyebrows in dismay. Not trusting her hand, Shirayuki looked with her eyes. She took out her wallet, digging deeper into the black hole she called a ‘handbag,’ still unable to find her missing item.

She took out her phone and texted Yuzuri.

Shirayuki: Outside. Can u open, please?

Yuzuri: What?! Again?!!!

Shirayuki: Sorry! She included a kissy-face emoji.

Yuzuri: Almost done doing my rounds. Give me a few.

Shirayuki stared at the three dots beneath the latest text.

Yuzuri: Bitch, you owe me.

Rolling her eyes, Shirayuki couldn’t help but smile at her friend’s text. She owed her a bunch of favors already, one more couldn’t hurt. While waiting for the door to open, Shirayuki wondered where she left her damn badge. She thought about going back to her car--maybe it dropped inside? But Yuzuri would kill her - in the most violent fashion if she wasn’t there waiting.

The black box next to the door suddenly beeped, and her attention snapped to it, to see which employee was behind her.

The picture on the badge was a redhead with a goofy-looking smile. She remembered taking that picture. The security guard had pressed the button on ‘three’ when it was common knowledge that you press after ‘three.’ And the man wouldn’t let her take it again!

It took Shirayuki a few seconds to realize that’d she'd been reunited with her missing badge.

“You better clock in before Izana calls you out for being late again.”

Shirayuki spun around, nearly bumping into Obi’s chest. God, he was close. Damn tasty muscles! So close she could smell the musk from his deodorant. Why did he smell so good? She was angry at him - and him smelling delicious was ticking her off more!

“Why the heck do you have my badge?” She took a step back, pulling the door open. Obi followed her in, keeping close.

Obi waved the badge in front of him, a smirk plastered on his face. “I didn’t take you for a mimosa type of girl.”

Shirayuki reached out to grab her badge, but Obi pulled away before she could get it. She practically growled, “I didn’t take you for the lying type of guy.”

Obi froze at her words. “Lying?”

Snatching the badge away, Shirayuki leaned closer, her face tilting up to look him dead in the eyes. “You said you were tired, but…”

“I was tired,” he said softly. He averted his eyes, and Shirayuki poked him in the chest.

“Liar.” She paused for a moment, her breaths labored like she was going to hyperventilate. “If you had other plans, you didn’t have to lie to get out of our date.” She turned around, and before she could walk away, Obi grabbed her hand to stop her.

“It’s not what you think.” He squeezed her fingers, and Shirayuki clung back. “When I saw you talking to Zen, I…” He pulled her in and Shirayuki wrapped her arms around his waist, telling herself she was just sharing his glorious warmth.

“I figured you’re still not over him, and honestly, I want you to be happy, and…”

“So you got over me quickly and went on another date?” Shirayuki knew she sounded bitter and accusing, but dammit, she was hurt!

Pulling back but keeping his arms around her shoulders, Obi gave her a puzzled look. “Date?”

“Yes, date! I saw you at the bar with that pretty woman.”

He was still baffled, and it took him a long minute to realize what the hell she was talking about.

“You mean, Torou?” His voice pitched like he was disgusted. “First of all, you should have said hi and joined me at the table.” He chuckled and pulled her in again. “Second, on my way home, Torou texted me out of nowhere and decided to meet at the Greenhouse.” He took a deep sigh of relief. “She’s just a friend.”

“A pretty friend who makes you smile like you haven’t seen her in a while.”

“Exactly!” Obi’s smirk fell at the sight of her expression.

Shirayuki frowned, eyes welling with tears.

“Not the pretty part!” he blurted. “I mean, yes, I haven’t seen her for many years.”

There was a silence between them, but their hard expressions had softened, and Shirayuki felt her heart flutter with excitement.

Obi licked his lips and pouted. “C’mon Shirayuki, why don’t you give me another chance?”

Shirayuki leaned closer and swooned into his arms. “Take me! Take me and do what you will!”

Obi ruthlessly squelched his daydream of a compliant Shirayuki. There was no way in hell she felt the same for him as he felt for her… He smiled, more honestly and tried again. “C’mon, give me another chance.”

Was it sweet anticipation that made Shirayuki's stomach flutter? The alluring promise of potential? Or the sure fact that she'd been wanting to spend more time with Obi? "Yes."

Follow My Lead

For the AnS Obi x Yuki soundtrack Event ~ I chose to take my three song files and merge them into one longer story. Word count: 1994. Rating: teen (some swears). Genre: Adventure.

Summary: Thrown together by chance? No, Obi had spent too long following, protecting and loving Shirayuki to allow mere chance to screw with his future. What was happening now, however, was something he'd never considered might occur. A clan celebration was being held tonight - and he was invited. Obi knew this was the last step into full acceptance - and if Shirayuki accepted him, well, he'd spend the rest of his life keeping her happy.

Christoff closed his one eye and allowed the music in his soul to guide his fingers. The oft-repaired bow danced over the scuffed body of the violin, creating beauty. Solo finished, other fiddles, drums, flute, and voices joined. All the remaining clans-folk who were in any way talented with an instrument played. Tonight was an homage to freedom and the heady promise of a wide-open future.

Several youths were coming of age and this impromptu festival was going to be special. The war that had lasted years and decimated the whole country was over. The treaty ink was dry and the rulers of this land were beholden to the clan - and appreciative. Earlier they had feasted and now they danced, Christoff smiled and played louder.

Bodies whirled from partner to partner. Festival dress. Bright colours and the finest fabrics clothed dancers, watchers and musicians alike. Time for joy. The moon shone equally on every person. Tears leaked from Christoff's ruined eye hiding behind a silver patch. He'd lost his sister, but Shirayuki had lost her mother.

The music played faster and Obi darted after Shirayuki as she danced wildly through the twisting participants. In the centre of the camp was a roaring bonfire; the dancers grooved close to the heat and then dashed away. Laughter, conversation and promises mingled in the air.

Mariette, the clan leader removed the lid from a special container. Silent, her eyes invited the revelers to dip their ceremonial horn cups into the brew and drink.

Shirayuki nudged Obi who stared, motionless. One after the other, the dancers moved to the offered refreshment. They took a share, drank and danced away. Obi shrugged and pointed to his empty belt loop.

Shirayuki patted her skirt and withdrew a dark-red cup made of horn, placing it square in Obi's hands. "Made from the ibex we hunted together. Christoff helped with the carving, but not much."

"I'll treasure this, Miss Yuki." Obi smiled, hurried after his charge and served himself the offered drink. It was cold and slipped down his throat, soon erupting into the warmth of potent alcohol. Obi coughed and sputtered.

"I'll treasure that." Shirayuki giggled, downed her own drink and helped Obi tie his new drinking vessel to his belt loop. "This is where the dance gets even more exciting!" She grabbed his hands and smiled without any bashfulness. "Follow my lead."

The music Obi realized, had never stopped. It had quieted while they drank - but now it returned to full volume and vibrancy.

Shirayuki took handfuls of her skirt and shook it playfully. The glow from the fire made her hair a bolder shade of red, a living river of blood. Her forest green blouse with tiny red flowers complemented her black skirt. She'd never looked so wild and beautiful to Obi.

They danced to the far edge of the crowd, the moonlight brighter than the distant fire. Obi mirrored Shirayuki as best he could, his feet not as fleet as hers, but still making a good effort. He began clapping as Shirayuki spun in place, her skirt flying high and her hair swirling with the same freedom. Mouth dry and heart racing, Obi held out his hand.

A blush - not from the exertion of exercise - coloured Shirayuki's cheeks and she stopped dead in front of Obi. Her head tilted a bit to the side and her eyes glittered with mystery. Shirayuki took hold of Obi's hand in both of hers and held it against her heart. "Do you wish to follow?"

Ghostly mist rolled across the ground, obscuring the festivities from Obi and Shirayuki. A trio of church bells caroled. It ought to have sounded merry, a complement to the clan's party, but it held a warning. Something fearsome waited in the new-made gloom.

Shirayuki leaned against Obi and whispered, "The fog is early."

"What it is, is strange." Obi checked the perimeter for anything out of the ordinary. What sounded like a regiment of boots stomping, coming near - filled their ears. A sudden swoop of cold wind took hold of Obi's cloak as if it wanted to tug him away, to hide in the warren of small buildings. Never one to dismiss his instincts, Obi lifted Shirayuki into his arms and ran.

The clouds scudded across the cruel moon, light, and shadows bringing confusing images. Before, the noise of the boots had been almost a solid presence; and now, silence. Obi peeked around the corner of the building they hid behind. Only a dozen figures stood in a circle, not the regiment they'd sounded like. So odd though, no barked orders, curses, no jingling of coins in pockets, whispers or whistling?

The wind gusted, sending detritus skittering down the street. A large crumpled news page cartwheeled towards the soldiers. Obi knew full well how easy it was for patrols sent out with secret orders to remain incommunicado. Orders to stand down might lag behind for several weeks or even months. They had to be unaware of the recent peace treaty. About to muster his courage, to approach the men and share the news, he flinched and gasped.

The news page passed through the squad. Dammit; not all the dark mages had died with their master. If the mage were more powerful, they'd be able to quell all sound and substance at the same time. So, in this at least, was a small blessing.

Pulling back behind their shelter, Obi gazed at Shirayuki with terror-filled eyes. She opened her mouth to question him and Obi shook his head, laying his fingers over her lips. Guiding Shirayuki backward he pointed to the brick buildings in the distance. Obi gave Shirayuki a serious look. She could feel the alarm buzzing like a wild beast under Obi’s calm façade.

Slow and careful they walked over the uneven cobblestones. The wind howled and subsided. Some garbage skittered by and other pieces connected with a wet slap that made their bowels clench. Safety was in sight, almost within reach. The heavy boots marching sent Obi and Shirayuki racing into the fog. If they could reach a building, they could hide.

Half rotten boards made a slipshod barricade that Shirayuki wriggled through. Obi needed to pull a board off before he could fit his taller frame inside. Shirayuki found a shelf to huddle beside. Anxious for Obi to rejoin her, she wrung her hands, afraid to talk.

He spun around but couldn’t see Shirayuki until she waved her hand. A sigh of relief hissed from his lips and Obi sank to the ground beside his partner. For all the terrible terror of the last ten minutes, right now, he felt much lighter.

Shirayuki slipped her cold hands into Obi’s and held tight. Obi nudged Shirayuki and relaxed further as she pressed her cheek against his. Her breath was sweet and alluring; desire flared to life deep in his gut. Obi suppressed his baser instincts and pulled away enough to quiet his hormones.

Silence. The wind had dropped and the fog must be smothering sounds. Obi strained his ears and studied the shadows on the floor of the derelict building. Long minutes passed making him realize the silence was too deep and complete. Obi shot to his feet and pulled Shirayuki with him as well. He whispered, “An exit?”

Shirayuki pointed to the thin slats covering the empty front windows. Glass was too valuable to leave behind in a failing shop.

A shout and both Obi and Shirayuki could hear the suddenly muttered concerns of the soldiers. Minutes ticked by as nothing changed - but the ominous feeling of pressure continued to build. Obi recognized the slow draw of steel from scabbards. Obi hurled himself through the flimsy window barricade - springing to his feet as fast as he could. Shirayuki followed him, the soldiers bursting inside the market shop too late to capture them.

Racing hand in hand, Obi and Shirayuki pelted down the narrow alley and whipped around the corner. Fright was a mighty fine inducement to find untapped speed. Somehow they’d run in exactly the right pattern to confuse and throw off their pursuers. The shouting faded away. Obi and Shirayuki found themselves very close to the clan’s festival square.

Obi remembered the freely celebrating elders, drinking copious amounts of thought-fogging alcohol or imbibing other products known to slow reflexes. Dread rose to strangle what little breath he had left. He squeezed Shirayuki’s hand and released it to cup his ears. No music. The violins were silent, no voices lifted to shout lurid lyrics, no happy chatter of any kind.

One tear slipped down Shirayuki’s cheek, and then another as she closed her eyes and tried to will celebratory noise to life. Lips set in a firm line she lifted her chin and whispered an oft-recited prayer. “Brave warriors, should death find us, let it be swift. May our courage not falter to bring mercy and peace for all.”

Echoing her, Obi added a heartfelt, ‘please’ instead of ‘amen.’ Shirayuki snapped open her eyes. “Goddess willing, we will find things as we left.”

“Your Goddess has delivered before, I hope she can do it again.” Obi hugged Shirayuki, holding tight as if this human contact would purge all their fears. “We have come so far through this foolish war. To die at this moment would be the height of stupidity.”

“My Goddess is a divine healer.” Shirayuki knuckled away her tears. “I only fight because I must. But I would promise to serve as her healer, bound a full decade if that meant we find lasting peace.”

“It won’t come to that.”

“You cannot promise. Life is a rushing stream, different from one minute to the next, no matter how well one knows the lay of the river.”

Obi sighed, content to stand close to the healer favoured by the Goddess - only, Shirayuki was more than a healer. She was hope and beauty; strong-willed yet able to bend to seek justice. Shirayuki was the home Obi had spent years searching for - all those years restless, no ties to anyone - no family. “I promise.”

“Then follow.” Shirayuki began a circuitous route, keeping one hopeful ear open for signs of the clan party. She prayed to not hear signs of pursuit. More fog swirled over and around the crumbled rocks that bounded what everyone had thought was safe territory. No noise - celebratory or from soldiers hunting prey. Obi snagged Shirayuki’s hand. He pulled her back before she could take the final step and see, Goddess willing, the mute aftermath of overindulgence.

“Wait.”

“For?” Shirayuki turned and blushed as Obi held her shoulders tight, bringing his face so very close to hers. He had no way of knowing how that made her stomach flutter - could he? She licked her lips and held her breath. War had taught her many unpleasant lessons - and she needed to stay strong, for herself and her clan. “Time is a precious gift. Right now we stand poised to learn if harm has befallen my clan…”

“I made a vow, did I not? My life is bound to yours.”

“During battle.” Resolute, Shirayuki kept her gaze level with Obi. “Goddess knows many have begged forgiveness after such declarations.”

“She delivered and I always keep my promises, Goddess bound or not.” Obi lifted his hands from Shirayuki then tapped his dagger. “I am your shield.”

“So be it.” Shirayuki took another step - halting as Obi took a handful of her vibrant red hair and softly tugged. She turned with a scowl and began to speak -- words silenced by hot, hungry lips.

Obi poured years of want into his kiss, needing to show Shirayuki exactly what she meant to him. A kiss; made of love, belonging and the hope of a future spent together. Obi broke the kiss and smiled tenderly at Shirayuki. “Let’s forge a path, together.”

Story Description
