Hey y'all! The Twin Pines Mining company seems to be moving towards strip mining the Okefenokee for titanium. We have until April 9th to leave a public comment to save the swamp!!
The Okefenokee is one of the last pristine Black Water Swamps in America. This strip mine will spell disaster for the wildlife and the people in the swamp.
Please please please leave a public comment about this and please visit this website for a list of things you can do to save the swamp.

If you don’t know the Okefenokee, it’s a gigantic, ethereal, god-touched swamp in southeast Georgia that’s like no other place on earth. It’s a world wonder — nearly 700 square miles of labyrinthine wildness, the largest blackwater swamp in North America and the largest wilderness area in the eastern U.S. This wild botanical garden serves as a haven for alligators and black bears, woodpeckers and ibises, bitterns and cranes.
The tranquil waters of the Okefenokee are under threat from an Alabama company’s bid to help sate the country’s appetite for titanium dioxide, a mineral used in paint, chewing gum, toothpaste, cosmetics, and countless other products. Just the first phase of the project would obliterate 600 acres.

More vintage finds! A brochure from when Okefenokee park first opened, and an absolutely hilarious postcard that I saw last time and didn't get.....but I've been thinking about it ever since. Not only does it have a silly googly eye, it has a squeaker inside that makes a very baby-gatorish sound when you squash it!

okefenokee swamp mining
The Okefenokee Swamp is located in Georgia, and is the largest blackwater swamp in the United States (438,000 acres). The swamp is part of a wildlife reserve, but is not yet fully legally protected from mining in the state of Georgia. The swamp is bordered by Trail Ridge, an area of elevated earth that protects both the swamp’s wetlands and the St Mary’s and Suwanee Rivers. An Alabama mining company, Twin Pines, is trying to mine for titanium in the Trail Ridge area. This would destroy the earth buildup and disrupt the waters of the swamp. They first became able to mine during the Trump Administration, when Trump reduced protection on waterways, and reduced federal involvement in mining projects. The government also failed to contact the Muskogee Creek Nation about the mining plans. Though Biden overturned many of the changes to waterway restrictions, the fight for the Okefenokee Swamp is still ongoing. The mining could have devastating effects on the wildlife, the swamp itself, and the surrounding communities, leading to floods, wildfires, and the possibly permanent destruction of the swamp.
Things to do: Sign this petition, email GA legislators to support HB-71 (garivers.org has a page to help you email the Georgia Environmental Protection Division here), email the mining company at [email protected] (this is specifically for the 60-day public comment period, which goes from January 19 to March 20)
More Information: https://protectokefenokee.org, https://protectgeorgia.org/#/366, https://www.georgiaconservancy.org/okefenokee/mining
TL;DR: The Okefenokee Swamp is in danger of destruction from a titanium mine. HB-71 will protect it. Learn more here.

Having to fight all the time to protect things you love will wear a person out. It will take years off your life. And I was given the burden of loving a place that people are always chasing. This place is always running, fleeing down a dirt road as fast as she can go, scared out of her mind.
They want her trees, they want her fertile soil, they want her deer. They want her golden coast, they want her rivers.

Another company wants to rip through the Okefenokee

Hey you lot, serious post today.
The Okefenokee swamp is in danger of possible irreversible damage as a result of a mining company wishing to mine in it, this is a very critical swamp for biodiversity and protecting several species that otherwise have been reduced in population numbers. So this would fucking fuck shit the absolute fuck up, so I ask y’all to please just look at the website, take a stand for our swamp, and let this issue be more widely known.

I don’t think I could stand losing this place.

On top of the environmental clusterfuck that is Cop City, there is also a titanium mining company interested in mining the Okefenokee swamp.
If you don't know about the Okefenokee swamp it's an endangered ecosystem in South Georgia. Amazingly, it hasn't been protected as a national park yet despite it's infamy.
Good news; a few days ago, Twin Pines (the mining company) was fined 20,000 dollars for illegally collecting soil samples in the swamp
Bad news; The Okefenokee is still at risk for for being mined for all it's worth. The State of Georgia is still deciding on Okefenokee protected status.

Multiple environmental groups are showing up to the capital this Monday (January 29 2024) in the South Wing of the Georgia State Capitol to show support for the organizations and people working to protect the Okefenokee swamp. This event is open to the public so everyone's welcome! There should also be a Livestream available as well.
If you can't make it please look up this list of actions you can do to protect the Okefenokee!

Looking out at the stars from inside the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Stephen C. Foster State Park sits inside the Refuge; it was designated as an International Dark Sky Park a few years ago. It's one of the best places in the Southeast for stargazing!
