The Georgia Environmental Division just released the draft permits to strip mine three-miles away from Okefenokee swamp.
Currently, Georgia River Network is reviewing these drafts given by the Twin Pines Minerals.
Nevertheless, the Okefenokee is one step closer to environmental disaster.
Here's some actions we can do to protect the Okefenokee Swamp. I ask everyone to do their best to protect this historic and important environmental landmark.

okefenokee swamp mining
The Okefenokee Swamp is located in Georgia, and is the largest blackwater swamp in the United States (438,000 acres). The swamp is part of a wildlife reserve, but is not yet fully legally protected from mining in the state of Georgia. The swamp is bordered by Trail Ridge, an area of elevated earth that protects both the swamp’s wetlands and the St Mary’s and Suwanee Rivers. An Alabama mining company, Twin Pines, is trying to mine for titanium in the Trail Ridge area. This would destroy the earth buildup and disrupt the waters of the swamp. They first became able to mine during the Trump Administration, when Trump reduced protection on waterways, and reduced federal involvement in mining projects. The government also failed to contact the Muskogee Creek Nation about the mining plans. Though Biden overturned many of the changes to waterway restrictions, the fight for the Okefenokee Swamp is still ongoing. The mining could have devastating effects on the wildlife, the swamp itself, and the surrounding communities, leading to floods, wildfires, and the possibly permanent destruction of the swamp.
Things to do: Sign this petition, email GA legislators to support HB-71 (garivers.org has a page to help you email the Georgia Environmental Protection Division here), email the mining company at [email protected] (this is specifically for the 60-day public comment period, which goes from January 19 to March 20)
More Information: https://protectokefenokee.org, https://protectgeorgia.org/#/366, https://www.georgiaconservancy.org/okefenokee/mining
TL;DR: The Okefenokee Swamp is in danger of destruction from a titanium mine. HB-71 will protect it. Learn more here.

How We Are Saving Wild Florida
Tumblr media
Saving our wild Florida is imperative to keeping what we love about the Nature Coast – coastal estuaries, wide open spaces, parks, preserves, farms and ranches – alive and available for us to enjoy now while conserving these lands for our children and grandchildren. As NatureCoaster’s publisher, I am passionate about connecting you with the beauty and energy of our forests, springs, fields and dreams through the written word and images. I hope that this will inspire you to get out and experience the magic of being in nature for yourself. While many of our readers, contributors, and partners work toward this goal, one organization stands out as a leader in the cause: the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation. It all started with a Biologist and a Bear At the onset of the breeding season in May 2010, a two-year-old male Florida black bear known as M34 began his journey from the south-central Florida oak scrub, across swamps, pine forests, and palmetto thickets in search of a mate, amidst central Florida’s development. M34’s nearly 500-mile roundtrip made Joe Guthrie notice. Joe is a wildlife biologist who caught and tagged the young bear in 2009. Joe wondered how wildlife could move through the myriad of roads, fences, and other human development that fragmented the little bear’s environment. Maximus is a baby bear rescued when his mother didn't make it to a wildlife crossing. He will reside at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park for the rest of his life. Image courtesy of Joe Dube. A Conservationist, Photographer, and Filmmaker Joined the Movement In 2012, Joe joined Mallory Lykes-Dimmitt, a conservationist, Carlton Ward, a photographer, and Elam Stoltzfus, a filmmaker for a four-person expedition to experience a 100-day, 1000-mile journey that wildlife would need to traverse to get from the Everglades to Georgia’s Okefenokee swamp. This journey was shared by millions in the film, “The Florida Wildlife Corridor: Everglades to Okeefenokee. Two years later, a second film was made called, “The Forgotten Coast: Return to Wild Florida,” with the same premise of experiencing the challenges of traversing wild lands while skirting human development. This film highlighted Florida’s west coast, including our Nature Coast. The films were shown in parks, at community gatherings, and eventually, they were aired on WTBS, Tampa’s Public television channel, and then nationally on public television. You can watch them on YouTube any time, and the fantastic visuals along with the simple message resonated with audiences. More films were made. Some were under two minutes, some twenty minutes, but all contained the same message, “We have an important mission and you can be a part of it.” The goal of encouraging people to get out and use the corridor became a part of the messaging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBVREDcGa40 This short film was created to help legislators in Tallahassee understand the importance of a contiguous corridor of natural areas for Florida's wildlife. NatureCoaster was hired to help. NatureCoaster Assists in a Small Florida Wildlife Corridor Film In 2017, I worked with the Florida Wildlife Corridor on a very short film about the tiny black bear population that is isolated in the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The film was created to help communicate to our legislators about the importance of funding critical linkages to open space. I thought I would be writing and it turned out I was assisting in connecting the organization with local organizations who would be able to help in locations and such. I also manned the table at the film’s screening at the Valerie Theatre in Inverness when a volunteer didn’t show up as expected. It wasn’t a high-paying or glamorous gig, but I learned so much about how groups can work together to influence those who have the power to make change. I learned about how little things influence big decisions, and I learned how our Nature Coast community unites behind a cause. Art is Valuable in Communication A mural was commissioned by the Foundation, created by Kelly Quinn, Art Director and Muralist with Canvas of the Wild at 35 NE 5th Street in Crystal River, that features species native to the local ecosystem, including Florida black bears, roseate spoonbills and, of course, manatees. Image courtesy of the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation. Another reason I believe the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation has made such progress is its recognition of the value of art in communication. A mural campaign has been initiated, with two of those connecting murals in our local communities: Crystal River and Brooksville. “The murals help to connect us with the Corridor,” explains Mallory Lykes-Dimmitt, the Foundation’s CEO. The Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation mural in Brooksville was dedicated in 2023. Image by Diane Bedard. 2021 Brings The Florida Wildlife Corridor Act Several years later, after decades of work from conservationists, scientists, politicians, and many others, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Act was signed into law following unanimous bipartisan support by the Florida legislature on June 29, 2021. This act provided funding for the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, which held its first summit in September of 2022. Representatives from several land trusts, conservation organizations, the Florida Department of Transportation, legislators, scientists, ranchers, and data scientists gathered to chart a path forward. One of the things that I have really admired about the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation is its attitude that everyone, including businesses, governments, scientists, developers, ranchers and farmers, and community groups want to be part of the solution. This has encouraged large-scale solutions with buy-ins from diverse groups, making a stronger conservation movement. By Working Together, We Can Find Solutions I was invited to the first Florida Wildlife Corridor Summit in Orlando in 2022. At this inaugural event, I rubbed elbows with a diverse group of nature lovers committed to working together to manage Florida’s massive development activity to preserve contiguous green space for our State’s diverse flora and fauna – and humans - to not only survive but thrive. Diverse groups were represented at the first Florida Wildlife Corridor Summit in 2022. Image by Diane Bedard. Multi-generational ranchers, subdivision designers and developers, cinematographers, and artists joined land trust and nature preserve managers, conservationists, biologists, map makers, State legislators, and me. What did we all have in common? A desire to preserve a contiguous tract of 18 million acres of Florida land to provide a safe corridor for our keystone species, like panthers and black bears, and for our lesser known, but just as valuable species like the Florida leafwing butterfly to thrive. It is this organization’s attitude that everyone wants to help that I believe has made them so successful. At times, they seemed to be stepping on other conservation organizations in Florida, but this was not their goal. As of 2019, there were 25 active conservation land trusts, local and regional, in the State of Florida. Each is doing a valuable service by protecting their local lands from development. Still, there is a lot of human development between the conserved lands, which is where wildlife often dies while attempting to move from one protected area to another. https://youtu.be/Ji4O4whuwpY Over time, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation worked hard to become a unifying organization, championing each land trust’s success vocally, and giving Florida’s conservation movement a place to show what we can do to the whole world! According to the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, we are a little over halfway there. About the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation The Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation partners with organizations and individuals nearly as diverse as the wildlife it aims to protect. By cultivating awareness and action through film, photography, painting, drawing, mapping, storytelling, and expeditions the Florida Corridor Wildlife Foundation works to attain its mission of permanently connecting, protecting, and restoring the 18 million acres that make up this magical and mystical path through Florida. Our State’s long-term economic prosperity and quality of life depend on a healthy and sustainable ecosystem. Using a science-based approach, on-the-ground knowledge of the Corridor, and the support of thousands of followers throughout the state and nation, this organization works to identify and elevate the most pressing threats and opportunities facing the Corridor. I strongly encourage you to get involved. To learn more, visit floridawildlifecorridor.org or follow the organization on Facebook and Instagram. Read the full article

Heard Of The nice Technology BS Concept? Here Is a superb Instance
Tumblr media
Every single driving evening ushers inside new technology and also solutions, doing expenditure inside the correct technology a rather complicated matter regarding establishments. That’s why online schools move quickly to incorporate the newest technology for their students. Their logic -- like the other schools that have implemented similar programs -- is that the stadium sales increases revenue and decreases binge drinking. What sort of revenue boost would it provide? The collected ACC Media voted BC last in their preseason conference poll at the ACC Media Days. The biggest news out of the media event was the absence of Rick Pitino. So it wasn't like we lost out on a new pool, track stadium or basketball arena. But it seems like most in Boston are saying "good riddance." As someone who doesn't live in Massachusetts this seems like a missed opportunity. In the post game, you'll hear him reference statistics to justify his actions, but most of the advance metrics show that conservative approaches and wasting possessions (like the ones before half) will not lead to victory. I hope he's right and if he is BC will certainly surprise people. Would serving beers and wine in Alumni make people happy and get fans to their seats on time?
This type of totally free alternative is exactly what most people seek out in the web nowadays. As July comes to a close, it has turned out to be a good month. In these ultra competitive times it is vital to seek out any competing advantage that can be acquired by watching, monitoring as well as benchmarking various other professions, strategies as well as thought operations. I thought Addazio had the team motivated and it fought hard, but that's not enough. I do take solace in Christian saying this year's team is more talented than last year. DENVER -- Imagine making close to $100,000 a year and having nothing to do at the office. Nothing Christian nor our player representative Dennis Clifford and Eli Carter said made headlines. Heck, calling Noah a role player would have been generous. I didn't live in Atlanta during the Olympics, but have seen how it was a plus for the city.
Perhaps you prefer being closer to the big city and its amenities however and bigger cities do exist that are convenient to North Carolina’s scenic mountain country. They share one characteristic: An influence on American sports and society that wasn't confined to North Carolina's borders, often reaching far beyond. One of the most extraordinary facets of the Okefenokee Swamp is its utter quiet - or so you might think. As someone who cares about BC sports, I think this could have been a nice little niche and a chance to have someone else pay for facilities upgrades. I think he can do it. But even in single-vendor networks, issues can arise that will limit its utility. This week will be about a different style of coaching. Given how many minutes all the freshmen will play, someone is likely to earn some all freshman honors. This will take you into the "Mackin VIA Settings" page.
Taken from the famous Ferrari Enzo design with 6.0 liter V12 and a speed rate of 61 miles per hour, this could only take up to 3.7 seconds. And, obviously, this investment will keep giving and keep you saving for as long as you use it. Jackson has improved and is our best Point, but this offseason he will have to get better awareness of defenses and the shot clock. Addazio now has to get at least one QB ready and probably two ready. 카지노사이트 주소 came at the expense of Johnson C. Smith University (CIAA/Division II), so expect SSU to handle its business today and get victory number 2. Former FAMU offensive coordinator Jimmy Joe is the OC for Savannah State. Playing that way against Florida State with Darius Wade (who is not an explosive runner), our fledgling OLine, and no RBs who matches Williams speed/power combo, and no game breaking WRs, left BC with a very narrow path to victory. Because of 에볼루션게이밍 and Tyler Murphy and good offensive lines, we could pound, pound and pound some more and eventually something would break. Adjusting midseason is the type of things good coaches do. All men want to look good.

Stephen C. Foster State Park
February 11, 2022 through February 13, 2022
We set out to camp as much as possible in the state of Georgia this year. So naturally, our first trip of the year was to Stephen C. Foster State Park in Fargo, GA. This state park is considered the gateway to the Okefenokee Swamp making it much more “Florida” than many of the actual Florida trips that we have done. We got a later start than we intended to (who’s surprised?), but still got to camp around 530pm which gave us plenty of time to set up before the sun went down. Which was helpful because we just purchased a brand new, cabin-style, 8-person tent. We struggled with it, bickered a little, but we finally got it up as it began getting dark. It was more than we could have ever hoped for. The opportunities with this much space were endless and we were thrilled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We didn’t have any firewood because the office was closed when we arrived, so we didn’t get a chance to buy any. We figured we’d stop in and get some on Saturday morning when we checked in. But that left us foraging for scrap firewood around the damp campsite that first night and we simply could not get a fire going. So we gave up and just finished unloading the car and setting up the campsite. We put up the pop up canopy and the lights around the canopy legs. We took all of the bins out of the car. We left the coolers in the trunk and used the car as a pantry the entire weekend. This practice will become a permanent one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We skipped the pop-up potty since the comfort stations at this park were the best that we had ever seen and relatively close to our campsite. They had individual rooms with a toilet and a shower in each. We didn’t have to share space with anyone.
Jenna’s air mattress was unreliable so I brought mine and the cot. It will be several more trips before I pull the plug on the cot, but I began to question the need for it at all around this time. It was bulky and hard to pack and set up. Plus it wasn’t really all that comfortable. I gave Jenna the choice for night one to have either the cot or the air mattress and she chose the air mattress, leaving me on the cot.
The first night was chilly, but not too cold; the perfect sleeping temperature. Some time during the night a raccoon got to one of our bins on the folding table and knocked it off. The bin proved sturdy though and did not open. This was a major selling point for me on this new ish bins system.
We woke up at 7 the next morning and got started right away with making coffee with our new kettle and single burner butane stove. Coffee has become a good indicator of how far we’ve come with our camping skills. We’ve gone from having to start an entire fire to heat up water to using the single burner wood burning stove to this butane set up. The butane setup was fast, clean, and it packs down to nearly nothing. The recurring cost of the butane is a little bit annoying, but it really is worth the time saved each morning. And it also allows me to easily get coffee without sweating over a stubborn fire or waiting for Jenna to wake up so that she can help rescue it.
Tumblr media
While we drank our coffee we took in the area around us a bit more. Usually we get to camp after dark on Friday’s and even though we got here a little bit earlier the night before, we spent what daylight we had left setting up camp. Either way, we hardly ever get to take in the scenery around us on the first night. So those Saturday mornings are spent finally taking it all in. and this was one beautiful campground.
Tumblr media
Once we were caffeinated, we headed back to the front office to get checked in and to buy some firewood. The office was cute and had a little camp/gift shop so I meandered around a bit. Once we got checked in, I bought some firewood to last us the next two days. In typical state park fashion, the firewood was overpriced and damp. We don’t love to use the firewood sold by the parks for this reason, but sometimes we get lucky with locals selling firewood nearby and sometimes we don’t. This time, we did not.
We came back to the campsite and I got started on making breakfast: bacon and eggs. Using the butane burner proved difficult; I had to prop up the frying pan on something to get it sit level. But it was still significantly better than cooking over a fire or using the wood burning stove.
Tumblr media
We spent the better part of the day organizing gear. I love to obsess over storage bins, accessibility, ease-of-packing, and lists. Every camping trip ends with me changing up the packing system in some way, big or small. I always find ways to do it better and this has been an important part of the way I camp since that first trip in September of 2019. We had gone from nothing, to a giant bin with everything, to smaller bins, back to a large bin, back to smaller bins. I shuffle the gear around from bin to bin so many times that Jenna has just stopped paying attention whenever I show her my latest system. This keeps me busy at camp too when I would otherwise start to feel bored.
Jenna allows me to indulge and spend a lot of time at camp playing with my packing system and for that I am grateful. I’m sure she uses that time to actually relax; something with which I heavily struggle. I always swore that one day I would get it right and leave it alone and start actually relaxing when I’m out at camp, but I don’t even believe it anymore. The feeling of needing to do something is far too strong and I feel anxious if I’m not being productive.
For this trip, I changed up the bins only slightly and ended up with:
Large Bin = RETIRED COMPLETELY
Medium Bin - Tools, but fewer - retired a lot of them
Small Bin - kitchen
Small Bin - inside electronics - no electricity needed
Basket - Electronics - electricity needed
Crate - Folding Fans, Misc.
Tumblr media
While I was needlessly messing around with the gear, Jenna finally got the fire started. The A.M. hours finally hit double digits so I started drinking beer despite the park’s policy banning alcohol. We’ve never had an issue before so long as we’re not wild or disruptive. Jenna doesn’t drink these days so I’m left alone to catch a buzz. Sometimes, while camping, I find that I drink too much. Usually it’s because I use beer to stave off boredom and try to  induce relaxation. It’s a vicious cycle and by this point, I was beginning to hate having the alcohol with us at all.
Just when I was starting to catch a nice buzz and Jenna was moments away from getting the fire going perfectly, one of the park volunteers called over to us. I had forgotten to change out the temp tag on my car for the permanent one that they had given me at check-in. I swapped the tag out, but this lady was feeling chatty and talked to the two of us for a good bit. Just long enough for me to lose my secret buzz and for Jenna to lose the fire. She had to start all over. I did too.
Tumblr media
We gave up on the fire and went inside our new tent that had thrived during its first night in the woods. We wanted to organize the gear that was stored there. It was lovely to finally have a space where we could stand, walk around, and not be hunched over the entire time. We had a nice screened in porch attached to it that was plenty big enough for us each to have a chair out there. This was one of the best investments in our camping set up that we had made so far. It really took things up a notch.
Tumblr media
We went back outside and I got a protein bar to help ward off having a bit too much to drink. Jenna went and took a shower in the very nice facilities while I stayed and tended to the fire while eating snacks. We’re trying to be a little healthier with the snacks that we bring out to camp with us. This time we stuck to pretzels, hummus, and grapes. We figured something of actual nutritional value would be a good idea for once.
Tumblr media
When Jenna got back from her shower I took my turn. I was not disappointed. These showers were large, warm, and private. It was everything we had always wanted in camping facilities. I took my time, savoring the experience. When I finally made my way back to camp, it started raining. Which wasn’t an issue for us anymore since we had this lovely, large tent with plenty of porch space. We both set up on the porch and read silently for a while. I eventually moved to the air mattress to be a little more comfortable. I lost all focus and ended up napping instead. I woke around 5 and the rain had stopped.
Tumblr media
Jenna was back outside trying to start a fire in a now even wetter fire ring. I went out to help her but ended up causing more harm than good, something I do whenever I try to help with fires. So I decided to go walk around the campground.
Tumblr media
We had zero cell service at this campground. We weren’t mad about it, unplugging is part of the fun, but whenever boredom sets in it becomes a bit annoying to be so disconnected. As I was walking around it was getting dark around me. I enjoyed seeing other camper’s set ups and getting ideas for my own. I saw lots of children running off their last bouts of energy after dinner. I miss those days of being a carefree child at a campground. Playing flashlight tag, manhunt, and hide and seek. Never worrying about what gear goes in what bin. THAT'S the camping I miss.
Somewhere along my walk I found a tiny little bit of cell service and was able to get back into touch with the real world. It didn’t last long, but it lasted long enough to keep my snap streaks and check in. It wasn’t long lived, but the sparse cell service was finally replaced by an incredible night sky above me. This park was “Dark Sky Certified”; the only park in the region with that title. And boy, did it earn it. I could see more stars than I ever knew existed.
I made my way back to camp and Jenna and I played the guitar and sang for a bit. I don’t love being that camp neighbor, but it really is the only time that the two of us get to play music together. It didn’t last too long though as I was getting exhausted and turned into bed early. This time on the air mattress.
It rained overnight which just makes sleeping that much more enjoyable, especially in a tent that doesn’t leak or collect condensation on the inside at all. I slept for a solid 12 hours that night and woke up refreshed and feeling amazing. I love the quality of sleep I get while camping. I don’t know what it is, but I rarely have a hard time sleeping when I camp.
When I finally got up at 830, we started packing. We typically pack very slowly on Sundays. We take our time, try not to sweat, and just make sure we do a good job getting all of our gear packed back away. Jenna usually takes charge of packing the car, especially on these more luxurious trips when we bring all the gear, but I get to make sure all the gear is in the right bins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While packing up at the end of the weekend, I use that time to retire some gear. I’ll either throw it away if it’s no longer functional or I will “black bag it” which basically means putting it in a designated bag separate from all the other gear with the intention of not returning it to the gear at all once I get home. Sometimes I will use the items in my home, give them away, or donate them, depending on the item. This weekend we retired the following items:
1. The pop up potty. This game changing piece of gear was the love of my life. Having a bathroom on site that was private, made a world of difference to me on many of our trips. The potty though, had seen better days. It was rusting, starting to smell, and ripping at some of the seams. I bid it a very solemn farewell, thanked it for its years of service to me, and promised to replace it with one that has rust-proof poles.
2. My Hammock. I barely used this thing ever. It was hard to find a site with trees the right distance apart and when I finally did get to set it up, I barely used it. This item wasn’t broken or dysfunctional in any way, so retiring it simply meant taking it home and keeping it in storage. This freed up a lot of space for me in my bins though.
3. The wood burning camp stove. I’d had it about a year and replaced it with the butane stove. Retirement came naturally for it. I offered this piece of gear to my brother who was just starting out again with camping and wanted to build a non-recurring-cost kit. This was perfect for him.
4. My Pot. Okay. Guys. replace your pot from time to time. Made it for about a year and a half. Nearly 20 camping trips. It was gross. I don’t care how much you wash it, replace your pot every few years. Jesus.
When the packing was done, we took off. Bid our new favorite state park adieu and promised to come back soon. And we would! Or at least I would. We got home around 2pm which gives me enough time to unload at my storage unit before going home. I hate that errand, but it keeps all of our gear organized and safe.
Stay Dirty,
Stone.

When I was in Middle School the 8th grade class did a “Tour of Georgia” every year. We got on a bus and basically went point to point on the map, over the course of a week, seeing these important historical sites. Presidential birthplaces and homes, Civil War battle sites, important ecological sites... anything really notable. Our group also visited the Okefenokee Swamp.
One one of the last days of the trip we were taking part in an ecological tour in the Okefenokee Swamp. It’s not just a giant wetland, it’s a Wildlife Refuge. The swamp is home to herons, egrets, frogs, turtles, lizards, snakes, black bears, hogs, and most notably, alligators. The alligators are everywhere. In the water, on the side of the road, surrounding the docks, you name it. And when it comes to alligators the safest place to be is AWAY from them. They’re pretty chill if you stay in your car or boat and don’t provoke them.
We had completed our tour and it was time to check out the gift shop, to take home little rubber alligators and pressed pennies and any variety of stuffed animals. I think they even had an ice cream shop. As we’re walking out I notice this kid, elementary school aged, lying on the end of the dock and trailing his hands in the water. There were multiple groups of adults standing around with ice cream cones, and many signs posted explaining you shouldn’t go into the water, or dangle your appendages from the dock, but no one was paying attention to this kid... just... doing what kids do, trying to reach down and put his hands in the water. His hands. In. The water. The SWAMP water. Where the alligators are. LITERALLY FEET AWAY.
Sure drowning is a concern but the alligators were an imminent threat
If any of you know me in real life you know that I can be blunt. This isn’t something that developed over time. I’ve sort of always been an asshole, but I’ve been called rude many times in cases where I’ve just been stating facts or sometimes making an observation. I do try my very best to not make these assertions in front of strangers unless absolutely necessary. I’ve never wanted to talk to strangers, but sometimes an observation MUST be made... and I MUST be called rude as a consequence...
I don’t know this kid, I have no way of knowing who his parents are, they aren’t with us, so I exclaim, “Man it would be awful if that KID GOT EATEN BY AN ALLIGATOR!” and immediately the adults turn to look. Someone runs over and grabs the kid and sternly walks him away from the dock.
One of the teachers jumps in front of me and says “That was rude!”
Informing strangers their kid was in danger was rude.
I’ve seen a lot of news stories where kids get eaten by an alligator on a golf course and I feel like if they could have been saved with a blurted out warning their parents would have been grateful. “That was rude!”
Well, I think it’s rude to let your unattended child get eaten by an alligator, but maybe that’s just me.

The Casino at Radium Springs
Radium Springs was sacred to Native Americans, who believed the unique body of blue water led to the spirit underworld. They also believed the cold, pure springs had medicinal purposes and aggressively protected their location, according to Lamar Clifton, who wrote a history of the area. “Ponce de Leon was looking for the spring as the Fountain of Youth,” Clifton says, “but the Indians didn’t want him to find it. So they steered him to a spring farther south.”
For decades, the depths of the limestone springs, Georgia’s largest, was unknown, giving rise to speculation that they were bottomless. About 7,000 gallons a minute bubble to the surface at a constant sixty-eight degrees. The overflow created a lake, the runoff draining into the nearby Flint River. The grounds, then and now, are shaded by great live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. At the time of day, whether bathed in sunlight or shining in the moonlight, the springs have a mythical beauty.
In 1925, publisher Barron Collier purchased the site and built a resort, which he named Radium Springs, for the trace element detected in chemical analysis. At its height, Radium Springs attracted locals, citizens, and vacationers from around the globe. Visitors could enjoy dancing, tennis, fishing, bridle paths, and a golf course. From the pool, stairs led to Skywater Lodge, later called The Casino, although the hotel never offered gambling. The lodge had beautiful molding, and massive windows. This unique architectural gem overlooked the grand spring and grounds, with yellow cottages scattered across the rolling lawns.
Unfortunately, a major flood in 1994 and another inundation four years later devastated the building and grounds. Following the floods, the property was obtained by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which purchases flood-zone land across the country. FEMA gave the property to the county with the requirement that the building be demolished and the land left undeveloped. Preservations hope to save the structure by moving it above the flood zone for use as a conference center, a museum, shops, and offices.
The eighty-five acres between the casino and the Flint River are considered one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. (The others are Stone Mountain, Okefenokee Swamp, Tallulah Gorge, Amicalola Falls, Warm Springs, and Providence Canyon.) The land has been purchased by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in order to preserve the springs and lakes, one of several “blue holes” located along the Flint. Radium Springs is located at 2501 Radium Springs Road.

Climate Farming Practices | Mother Earth News
In regenerative agriculture, animals can assist with crop cultivation.
Picture by Charles Gooden and Mikael Maynard
Standard strategies of recent agriculture and gardening can create a number of environmental hazards. In keeping with the Environmental Safety Company, agricultural exercise is liable for 10 p.c of atmospheric carbon emissions worldwide, and extra nitrogen runoff from typical and natural fertilizers — mixed with the poor contouring of most farmland — upsets the pure ecosystems in lakes, rivers, and oceans, suffocating fish and different flowers.
These practices strip important vitamins from topsoil, reducing each the provision of farmable land and the dietary high quality of the meals grown on it. Soil erosion is a progressively worsening scenario that the United Nations says may scale back worldwide crop yields by 10 p.c over the subsequent 30 years.
Trendy agriculture’s single-minded deal with yield leads most conventional and natural farmers to plant huge, single-crop fields, a apply known as “monoculture.” Monoculture farming requires extra importation of vitamins, additional degrades the soil, and may end up in poorer long-term yield.
Natural farming isn’t all the time simple on the setting both. Many large-scale natural farms do little to manage the leaching of water and plant vitamins from their land, and the ensuing runoff can have a unfavourable influence on close by ecosystems.
5 Ideas of Local weather Farming
Integration of animals into rising operations.
Stratified, adjoining planting of a number of species.
Minimal topsoil disturbance.
Erosion and water administration methods, corresponding to earthworks and applicable irrigation.
Ongoing soil enchancment via cowl crops and composting.
Given the problems with each conventional and natural farming, we are able to’t afford to proceed ignoring the business’s environmental influence. It’s time for natural customers, farmers, and gardeners to tackle Huge Agriculture and transcend natural. Local weather Farming is the subsequent step within the natural farming and climate-conscious revolutions. The aim of Local weather Farming is to provide scrumptious, nutritious fruit and veggies whereas enhancing topsoil well being, lowering or eliminating dangerous agricultural runoff, sequestering carbon, and fixing nitrogen.
The mixture of practices that make up Local weather Farming isn’t new. Somewhat, it hyperlinks collectively confirmed methods from regenerative farming, permaculture, and syntropic agroforestry, many drawing on Indigenous practices, in a singular means. We put these methodologies into apply day-after-day on the Johnny Appleseed Natural Village, a sustainable dwelling improvement close to the Okefenokee Nationwide Wildlife Refuge in southeast Georgia. We’re always observing and fine-tuning the ideas (see “5 Ideas of Local weather Farming,” above) with a few of the main consultants in permaculture and environmental sciences, and we’re proud to report that Local weather Farming is just not solely doable, nevertheless it’s additionally remodeling our land right into a carbon-capturing oasis.
Composting, animal integration, and the stratified, adjoining planting of assorted species are three key parts of Local weather Farming.

Regenerative Agriculture
Regenerative agriculture is an method to farm administration that emphasizes rehabilitating broken soil or persevering with to enhance the richness of soil that’s already prime quality. Preserving the highest layer of soil is essential for plant well being, as a result of the overwhelming majority of vitamins are saved in these valuable few inches — and agriculture is liable for an estimated 41 to 54 p.c of whole soil erosion.
Regenerative farms forgo typical tilling in favor of minimal topsoil disturbance to protect soil and vitamins. Consequently, the basis buildings of harvested crops stay belowground alongside different natural materials. Mixed with high quality compost enter, this apply feeds the soil meals net, leading to a wealthy bounty of vitamins for future crops.

Using cowl crops additional improves soil. Along with offering extra natural matter, these crops assist stop erosion from harming the standard of the soil, and so they can encourage the presence of pure pollinators on the farm.
Regenerative farms additionally search to emulate the dynamics of a pure ecosystem, harnessing the instincts of wholesome animals to help in crop cultivation. Frequent practices embrace plowing with pigs (see beneath); beekeeping; and the usage of chickens in tractors to weed, loosen, and fertilize the soil. Not solely are these practices similar to what would doubtless happen in nature, however additionally they assist restrict the usage of conventional farming instruments powered by fossil fuels.

It’s from regenerative agriculture that Local weather Farming attracts the practices of integrating livestock into rising operations, composting, and minimizing soil disturbance.
Permaculture
When the time period “permaculture” was first coined in 1978, it got here from a mixture of the phrases “everlasting” and “agriculture.” The place many agricultural and cultural traditions try to overcome nature — to have dominion over the land and nature — permaculture abandons this objective in favor of working with the land, leaning into nature and making a sustainable way of life for future generations. Designing a plot that works with nature encourages the inherent evolutionary relationships between organisms, which produce vitamins that improve one another. Organisms with these symbiotic relationships, referred to as “guilds,” are a cornerstone of each permaculture design and the Local weather Farming toolkit.
It’s from permaculture that Local weather Farming attracts its deal with the stratified, adjoining planting of a number of species, and water administration via contoured plantings.
Permaculture works to create a sustainable way of life with the land for future generations.

Syntropic Agroforestry
Most farming practices require sources and vitamins to be imported from elsewhere, fairly than producing them on-site. The environmental impacts of this apply vary from the damaging mining of phosphorus and nitrate, to the sources used to bundle and ship these supplies, to the runoff that pollutes our waterways. Shifting from artificial to natural fertilizers is a step in the fitting course, nevertheless it fails to deal with the issue of extracting sources from the land with out changing them. Syntropic farming, or syntropic agroforestry, works to develop a consortium of organisms that produce vitamins exactly the place they’ll be used, eliminating extraction issues. Its core values require that farmers create the vitality and sources wanted to develop with the very land on which they’re rising. This removes participation within the dangerous methods and practices that degrade soil and waste sources.
It’s from syntropic farming that Local weather Farming attracts its even handed pruning philosophy, in addition to the continued era and recycling of natural matter via succession planting and applicable termination. Stopping vitamins from leaving the farm by way of erosive runoff can be an important element of the apply.
Farming attracts on syntropic farming’s plant-pruning methods and its apply of producing and recycling natural matter.

Local weather Farming’s Potential
To totally mitigate local weather change, scientists agree that we’ll want to clean current atmospheric carbon in addition to restrict future emissions. Local weather Farming is a big departure from frequent farming and gardening practices, however the influence of changing extra farms and gardens to this mannequin can doubtlessly change the world.

Picture by Charles Gooden and Mikael Maynard
Based mostly on current analysis, local weather scientists estimate that 1 acre farmed this fashion may sequester as a lot atmospheric carbon yearly as a wholesome forest of the identical dimension. Every passenger automobile averages annual carbon emissions of 4.6 metric tons, and carbon sequestration on farmland can maintain a conservative common of three tons per acre. Which means if 1 p.c of the full current farmland within the U.S. have been transformed to regenerative practices, these farms would mitigate the emissions of about 5.8 million vehicles. If half of the present farmland have been transformed, it could remove the carbon output equal of all U.S. vehicles. On the similar time, topsoil high quality on these farms would proceed to enhance, leading to the next yield of extra nutritious, better-tasting meals.

Plowing with Pigs
When one thinks of sequestering carbon via soil constructing, they might be stunned to be taught that animal interactions with the land are key to that endeavor.
Tillage within the typical sense is extra more likely to lower soil carbon and harm soil construction and microboita. Nonetheless, somewhat plowing will be helpful, significantly the place the present vegetation isn’t fascinating, or when there’s a tangled woody thicket that provides little in the way in which of productive development, carbon capturing, or soil constructing.
Pigs, when confined and moved in a scientific means, will assist clear these areas whereas stirring the soil so you’ll be able to replant the matrix with a mix that produces human meals immediately, or forage for subsequent generations of carbon-capturing animals—together with pigs! And pigs will do that be just right for you with none must put money into machines and the fuels to run them.
After the fieldwork is full, transfer the pigs again to a semipermanent enclosure, or a thicket needing to be cleared. Take all of your compostable supplies, and pile them in that pen. The pigs will eat, churn, root, and finally go away you with a number of fiber and manure that’ll compost and make an incredible soil modification.
