Navajo County Courthouse Ghosts
Holbrook, Arizona is located east of Flagstaff and was founded in 1881. It is the county seat for Navajo County which was known for its railroad, lumber, farm and ranch businesses as well as trade with the Indians. In 1898 a new courthouse was built and was used until 1976. Today a lot of people will tell you stories about Holbrook’s wild past as well as about the Navajo County Courthouse ghosts.
Holbrook was what you would typically consider a Wild West town. The town had an interesting mix of people including cowboys, Indians, miners, those seeking adventures and their fortune’s in the west and of course those of the criminal variety. It also came with the typical brothels, saloons, and gambling houses.
When the Navajo County Courthouse was built in 1898 the basement housed the Sheriff’s office and jail cells. The cells were built in St. Louis and shipped by rail to Holbrook. So well built, they were used continuously until the jail closed 78 years later.
Along with the new courthouse came a new Sheriff, Frank Wattron and within a year came its first hanging. George Smiley was being held in the jail for murdering a railroad section foreman named McSweeney. At the time of the hanging, Arizona law required the sheriffs to send invitations out to other sheriffs and officials in the territory to serve as witnesses.
Wattron known as a bit of a show off, had his invitations professionally printed on gold-bordered paper. A reporter got a hold of the invitation however and soon it was not only in newspapers nationwide but also the Berlin Tageblatt, Paris Fiarge and the London Times. Eventually being read by then President McKinley, Wattron was issued a reprimand and Smiley a 30 day reprieve to let the bad press calm down.
It was during this 30 day reprieve that many people took the opportunity to visit and gawk at George Smiley and even take photographs next to his cell. This slowly aggravated Smiley and he furiously screamed one day at his visitors that “I’ll come back and haunt you!” Smiley was finally hanged on January 8, 1900. He may have kept his promise though as one story of the Navajo County Courthouse ghosts is connected to George.
Many have reported seeing the ghost of George Smiley walking around the basement cells and pacing up and down the stairs. Also strange noises, doors opening and closing and objects being moved are all attributed to George. One of the most popular activity is the claims of hearing obscene threats by staff and tourist alike coming from his jail cell when they walk by.
Along with George Smiley, another Navajo County Courthouse ghosts is said to be a woman seen staring outside the windows of the courthouse. The spirit is said to be of a woman who died inside the old jail and been given the name Mary. Mary is said to have been a prostitute and would gaze outside the windows in the jail for hours.
One story involving Mary comes from a former tourism director. He claims to have been driving past the courthouse one evening and saw lights on inside. He parked his car to go inside and cut them off. While inside. His wife claimed to see a woman looking out one window. She went inside and told her husband and after a thorough search, found no one there. Many visitors have claimed to have pictures of this woman looking out the window.

The ultimate sacrifice, three times over
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
According to the Civil War monument that stands in Courthouse Park in the vicinity of the Yates County Courthouse and county office building, 2,109 people from Yates County served in the military during the Civil War – out of a population in 1860 of 20,290 or a little more than 10 percent of the residents here at the time.
Of those 2,109 people, approximately 200 – another 10 percent, this time of those who served – died during the war, according to Penn Yan and How It Got That Way, by Frances Dumas.
And of the families of those 200 people, possibly none suffered more than the family of Romeo and Rachel Gaylord, of Bellona. The family sent three sons off to fight in the conflict between the North and the South – the rebellion, as contemporary newspaper reports often called it – and two of their sons died during their service while the third was wounded during the war.
I began to learn this family’s story when I went for a walk through the Bellona Cemetery one day earlier this summer and came across the Gaylord family gravestone there. The gravestone tells quite a story if you take the time to listen to it.
The marker lists parents Romeo and Rachel on the front of its four sides; Romeo died in 1867 at age 66, while Rachel lived to be 90 years old. Another side lists daughters Amanda and Emily, who both died in childhood at age 7 and less than a year old, respectively. A third side lists son Charles W., who died at age 25 in the Battle of Gettysburg while serving as a private with Co. B of the 126th New York Volunteers, along with daughter Lydia A. Cooper, who died at age 51 in 1891. The final side lists son Oliver C., who died at age 31 in St. Louis while serving as a private in Co. G of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, along with son Benjamin F., who died at age 37 in Mississippi in 1872. He had been a corporal with Co. H of the 102nd New York Volunteers during the Civil War; whether he was still serving the military at the time of his death, I haven’t been able to determine.
A letter to the editor in the March 3, 1864 edition of the Yates County Chronicle titled “An Afflicted Family” and signed “A Friend” adds more details to the story already told by the gravestone. “There are so many cases of affliction all over our land – caused by this most unholy war and about which so much has been said – that it sems almost like needless repetition to speak of others; but finding that the patriotism of this family is worthy of at least a passing notice, I have ventured, although unaccustomed to writing for the public prints, to state the simple facts in regard to them,” the letter begins its tribute to the Gaylord family.
Friend notes the Gaylord family “has been long and favorably known by many who will peruse this notice,” before he tells of the fates of the three sons called away by military service during the war. Oliver, the eldest son, had resided in Michigan “for several years past,” according to the letter, and enlisted in Co. G. of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry in October 1861. Six months later, in April 1862, he died of chronic diarrhea in St. Louis, having never been in battle.
Frank – as Benjamin F. seems to have been called – the next eldest son, enlisted in Co. H of the 102nd Regiment in December 1861 and was wounded in August 1862 at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in Culpeper County, Virginia. The wound was enough to disable him from further service during the war, and he was discharged in October 1862. It seems he returned to the family property in Bellona, at least for a period of time.
Charles enlisted in August 1862 – August 8, in fact, just a day before Frank was injured on August 9 – in Co. B of the 126th Regiment. He was killed in July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg, the northernmost battle of the war but not the only battle to take place outside of the Confederacy.
“And we have the fullest assurance that the two [Oliver and Charles] who have been ‘relieved from duty,’ were well prepared to report to the head-quarters of the Captain of their Salvation,” Friend concludes his letter.
According to Census records, the Gaylord family had at least two other sons – Byron, who was 13 in 1855, and Edward, who was 8 at that time – and at least one other daughter, Elizabeth, who was 21 in 1855. In 1855, the Gaylord family is listed in Torrey, but in 1865 the family is listed in Benton.
Frank’s gravestone indicates he died in Mississippi in 1872. Though I have been unable to find any further information, other than Frank married his wife in New York and they bore their son in Mississippi, I wonder if Frank had somehow re-enlisted in the military and served as part of the occupation of the South during Reconstruction and then somehow died during this service.
Perhaps this was another sacrifice made by the Gaylord family – a family who had already witnessed so much sacrifice and heartache during the Civil War.

Juneteenth takes on new meaning amid push for racial justice (AP) Protesters marched over the Brooklyn Bridge, chanted “We want justice now!” near St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, stopped work at West Coast ports and paused for a moment of silence at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, as Americans marked Juneteenth with new urgency Friday amid a nationwide push for racial justice. The holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, is usually celebrated with parades and festivals but became a day of protest this year in the wake of demonstrations set off by George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis police. In addition to traditional cookouts and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation—the Civil War-era order that declared all enslaved people free in Confederate territory—Americans of all backgrounds were marching, holding sit-ins or taking part in car caravan protests. Thousands gathered at a religious rally in Atlanta. Hundreds marched from St. Louis’ Old Courthouse, where the Dred Scott case partially played out, a pivotal one that denied citizenship to African Americans but galvanized the anti-slavery movement. Protesters and revelers held signs in Dallas, danced to a marching band in Chicago and registered people to vote in Detroit.
Law enforcement families face harassment, vandalism, and threats at home (Washington Examiner) Law enforcement officers say they and their families face harassment and bullying by strangers and neighbors as a result of a nationwide crackdown on law enforcement following protests around the death of George Floyd. One former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, faces a charge of second-degree murder over the 46-year-old black man’s death. The episode triggered nationwide protests over police practices and some violence and looting. At the same time, police officers around the nation, facing scrutiny by local, state, and federal officials, say morale is down in local departments. Budgets have been cut, and overtime pay for shifts during protests has been slashed. And the homes of police officers have been vandalized while anti-law enforcement activists have watched them from outside. Paul Chabot, a retired deputy sheriff reserve out of San Bernardino County, California, who runs a website that helps officers relocate to police friendly municipalities, told the Washington Examiner that officers and their wives who reach out to him reveal their children are targeted as well. “It’s not the same like it was even just two weeks ago, three weeks ago, just because they’re a law enforcement family now. Their kids are being targeted by people in the neighborhood.”
The battle over masks in a pandemic: An all-American story (Washington Post) In this sprawling, heterogeneous country, the pandemic has become yet another thing on which Americans are divided. Mask-wearing for some people is an identifier of broader beliefs and political leanings. Like so many issues rooted in science and medicine, the pandemic is now fully entangled with ideological tribalism. This has played out before: helmets for motorcyclists, seat belts in cars, smoking bans in restaurants. All of those measures provoked battles over personal liberty. Now it’s masks and the coronavirus, with face coverings emerging as an emblem for what cleaves the nation. A flurry of recent studies supports wearing cloth face coverings as a means to limit transmission of the novel coronavirus, which causes the illness covid-19. To many people, masks represent adherence to civic duty and a willingness to make individual sacrifices for the greater good of public health. To others, masks symbolize government overreach and a violation of personal liberty.
U.S. Watched George Floyd Protests in 15 Cities Using Aerial Surveillance (NYT) The Department of Homeland Security deployed helicopters, airplanes and drones over 15 cities where demonstrators gathered to protest the death of George Floyd, logging at least 270 hours of surveillance, far more than previously revealed, according to Customs and Border Protection data. The department’s dispatching of unmanned aircraft over protests in Minneapolis last month sparked a congressional inquiry and widespread accusations that the federal agency had infringed on the privacy rights of demonstrators. But that was just one piece of a nationwide operation that deployed resources usually used to patrol the U.S. border for smugglers and illegal crossings. Aircraft filmed demonstrations in Dayton, Ohio; New York City; Buffalo and Philadelphia, among other cities, sending video footage in real time to control centers managed by Air and Marine Operations, a branch of Customs and Border Protection. The footage was then fed into a digital network managed by the Homeland Security Department, called “Big Pipe,” which can be accessed by other federal agencies and local police departments for use in future investigations, according to senior officials with Air and Marine Operations.
Barber offers hope in Peruvian barrios devastated by virus (AP) Once a week, barber Josué Yacahuanca makes his way up the dusty hills of Peru’s capital, heading into its poorest neighborhoods carrying a treasured golden briefcase that holds his life’s passion—five clipper blades, 20 combs, four scissors and a bottle with alcohol. Yacahuanca seeks out clients devastated by a coronavirus lockdown that has gone on for nearly 100 days in an attempt to stem the wave of new infections. He does it for free. “I want them to look in the mirror and see a bit of hope,” said Yacahuanca, who though just 21 years old is a veteran barber, having started cutting hair at age 13. Yacahuanca had a rocky start in life himself. Abandoned by his mother, he was raised by his godmother, Gloria Alvarez. Despite obstacles, he discovered a business savvy at a young age. He hustled at odd jobs, selling sweets, cleaning houses, working in outdoor markets and at a bus station.
Brazil tops 1 million cases as coronavirus spreads inland (AP) Brazil’s government confirmed on Friday that the country has risen above 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, second only to the United States. Official data show a downward trend of the virus in Brazil’s north, including the hard-hit region of the Amazon, a plateau in cases and deaths in the countries’ biggest cities near the Atlantic coast, but a rising curve in the south. In the Brazilian countryside, which is much less prepared to handle a crisis, the pandemic is clearly growing. Many smaller cities have weaker health care systems and basic sanitation that’s insufficient to prevent contagion.
European powers refuse to back U.S. call for escalating Iran sanctions (Washington Post) France, Germany and Britain said they will not support reimposing sanctions on Iran if a U.N. arms embargo is not extended, but they urged Tehran to allow inspectors into sites where nuclear material may be stockpiled.
China unveils details of national security law for Hong Kong amid backlash (Reuters) Beijing unveiled details of its new national security law for Hong Kong on Saturday, paving the way for the most profound change to the city’s way of life since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. The much-anticipated legislation, which has provoked deep concerns in Washington and Europe, includes a national security office for Hong Kong to collect intelligence and handle crimes against national security, the official Xinhua news agency reported. It said Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam could also appoint specific judges to hear national security cases, a move likely to unnerve some investors, diplomats and business leaders in the global financial hub. China says the draft law is aimed at tackling separatist activity, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, but critics fear it will crush wide-ranging freedoms that are seen as key to Hong Kong’s status as a global financial centre.
Egyptian president says Libyan city Sirte a ‘red line’ (AP) Egypt’s president Saturday warned that an attempt by Turkey-backed forces in Libya to attack the strategic city of Sirte would cross a “red line” and trigger a direct Egyptian military intervention into the conflict. Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, in televised comments, said Egypt could intervene in neighboring Libya with the intention of protecting its western border with the oil-rich country, and to bring stability, including establishing conditions for a cease-fire, to Libya. El-Sissi warned that any attack on Sirte or the inland Jufra air base by forces loyal to the U.N.-supported but weak government in Tripoli would amount to crossing a “red line.” “Let’s stop at this (current) front line and start negotiations to reach a political solution to the Libyan crisis,” he said.
Ethiopia to fill disputed dam, deal or no deal (AP) It’s a clash over water usage that Egypt calls an existential threat and Ethiopia calls a lifeline for millions out of poverty. Just weeks remain before the filling of Africa’s most powerful hydroelectric dam might begin, and tense talks between the countries on its operation have yet to reach a deal. In an interview with The Associated Press, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew on Friday declared that his country will go ahead and start filling the $4.6 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam next month, even without an agreement. “For us it is not mandatory to reach an agreement before starting filling the dam, hence we will commence the filling process in the coming rainy season,” he said. “We are working hard to reach a deal, but still we will go ahead with our schedule whatever the outcome is. If we have to wait for others’ blessing, then the dam may remain idle for years, which we won’t allow to happen,” he said. He added that “we want to make it clear that Ethiopia will not beg Egypt and Sudan to use its own water resource for its development,” pointing out that Ethiopia is paying for the dam’s construction itself. He spoke after the latest round of talks with Egypt and Sudan on the dam, the first since discussions broke down in February, failed to reach agreement.
Congo president’s chief of staff guilty in corruption trial (AP) A court in Congo on Saturday sentenced the president’s chief of staff, Vital Kamerhe, to 20 years of forced labor after he was found guilty of corruption and embezzlement of more than $50 million. His lawyers said they would appeal. Kamerhe, 61, has called the trial a political attack on himself and President Felix Tshisekedi, who has not commented on the case. The charges stem from what the court said was “unequivocal” participation in the embezzlement of money from projects undertaken by the president during his first 100 days in office last year.

A Month of Islam in America: March 2019
A Month of Islam in America: March 2019
When Democrats took over the House after the 2018 elections, the House Homeland Security monthly report on terror, aka the Terror Threat Snapshot, was not only discontinued but previous reports were deleted from the government website. This is our version with a focus on Islamization in the U.S. that is much broader than just terror (jihad).
This month’s theme is one liberals and Muslims claim to champion: Diversity. As seen below, they are indeed diverse, but they all have one thing in common: Islam.
Tumblr media
Links below may not work unless you know how to find archived posts because the tech police are now enforcing sharia law on Americans. You can easily search the names of the perpetrators and find articles on mainstream news sites or search for the described incident for more details. We likely won’t have time to rebuild all the links but are posting here for reference.
Future generations will thank you!

Salkicevic could face up to 15 years in prison at her sentencing in June, although defense lawyer Joan Miller said she expected a lot less. Salkicevic, originally from Bosnia, is now a U.S. citizen, Miller said.

Philadelphia: Mosque under investigation after child bride says “husband” sexually assaulted her 10-year old sister
Police are now investigating whether child weddings are being conducted at a Philadelphia mosque after a sexual assault victim comes forward to Action News.
In a Facebook video posted two weeks ago, one of the alleged victims describes her ordeal. She’s 17 now but says she first became a child bride at 14.
She says it didn’t last. And in 2016, she says she was married off to Rajmann Sanders, a man more than twice her age who then allegedly began sexually assaulting her and her 10-year-old sister.

Gaetano's is open till 2 pm today for BRUNCH ONLY! We are giving our staff the rest of the day off so they can enjoy the SUPER BOWL GAME! 😍🏈🏆 #AlCapone #MafiaHistory 👉At the time of the ST. Valentine's massacre crime, Al Capone sat in a Dade County, Florida, courthouse, wearing one of his fashionable summer ensembles: white flannel trousers, a checkered sports jacket, and a light gray fedora. He was 30, overweight, but still powerfully built, and had a sharply receding hairline. Though world-famous now as a villain, he was almost never photographed without a smile. Capone had come for an interview with Louis Goldstein, a prosecutor from Brooklyn, who was investigating the murder in New York of Capone’s old friend and mentor, Frankie Yale. Capone was so confident that he arrived without a lawyer. But he may have regretted his decision when the questions began to bore in on his personal finances and not the murder of Yale. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ7bSXhlnwW/?utm_medium=tumblr

Daily Waypoint | N 38° 37' 32.7" W 90° 11' 22.6" Old St. Louis County Courthouse & Gateway Arch—The Old St. Louis County Courthouse was built as a combination federal and state courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri. Missouri's tallest habitable building from 1864 to 1894, it is now part of Gateway Arch National Park and operated by the National Park Service for historical exhibits and events. It was designed by the firm of Lavielle and Morton, the first architecture firm west of the Mississippi River above New Orleans. The last slave auction held at the Old Courthouse took place in 1861. When St. Louis County, Missouri and the city split in 1877, the courthouse became city property. The courthouse was abandoned by the city in 1930 after it built the Civil Courts Building. In 1935, during the Great Depression, St. Louis voted for a bond issue to raze nearly 40 blocks around the courthouse in the center of St. Louis for the new Gateway Arch National Park, which was then known as Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. The courthouse formally became part of the new monument area in 1940. The National Park Service maintains four history galleries on St. Louis and NPS offices within. The courthouse building was the tallest building in Missouri and St. Louis until 1896 when Union Station was built. It remained the largest structure in the national monument until the Gateway Arch was built in 1965. In 1846 the slave Dred Scott sued for his and his wife's freedom as they had been held as slaves in free states. All of the trials, including a Missouri Supreme Court hearing, were held in the Old Courthouse. The case was ultimately decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1857 Dred Scott v. Sandford, which ruled against the Scotts, saying they did not have grounds as citizens to sue.—Wikipedia—This image was processed as an HDR (High Dynamic Range) composition. https://www.fmgphoto.com/Lifestyle/Architecture/i-sZDFNDx/A #SaintLouis #StLouis #stlouismissouri #stlouismo #architecture #stlouisarch #stlouisphotographer #gatewayarch #gatewayarchnationalpark #gatewaytothewest #oldcourthousestlouis #discoveramerica #travelpics #travellife #travelinspiration #travelblog #travelphotogra (at Gateway Arch National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFMuHVesTFC/?igshid=brsu7cok7lon

New story in Politics from Time: Kenosha is a Test Of Donald Trump’s ‘Law-and-Order’ Message. It Doesn’t Seem to Be Working.
Rolando Morales is the kind of voter that President Donald Trump is desperate to win. A 41-year-old stay-at-home dad in Racine, Wis., Morales voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and his wife and her family are solid Democrats. But he’s alarmed by the violence that erupted in nearby Kenosha after police shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back on Aug. 23.
Before Kenosha, “I would have said I would never vote for Trump,” says Morales, gripping a sandwich outside a Jimmy John’s. “Now, it’s like: Maybe. I saw the city get burned down.”
In the aftermath, Trump visited the city to pose in front of burned buildings, denouncing the “anti-police and anti-American riots.” But his true audience was not necessarily the people of Kenosha: it was the white suburban voters who could make or break his chances at re-election.
Tumblr media
Patience Zalanga for TIMEA peaceful gathering early Tuesday near the site where Jacob Blake was shot by police in Kenosha, Wis., on Sept. 1, 2020.
Trump won the presidency in large part due to his success in suburban battlegrounds. In 2012, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney fought to a near-draw across suburban areas; in 2016, Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the suburbs by 5 points. But since then, Trump’s support among suburban voters has dipped. In the 2018 midterms, Democrats made huge inroads in the suburbs, winning districts in red states like Kansas and Oklahoma. According to a New York Times/Siena poll in June, Biden led Trump by 16 points in the suburbs, especially among voters with a four-year college degree. Whether or not the President gets a second term hinges on winning these voters back.
“This fall, it’s entirely possible that a surge in Democratic votes in suburban Wisconsin tips the state and the Electoral College,” says Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party.
Which is why the Trump campaign is doing everything it can to scare suburban voters into sticking with him. In recent weeks the dominant theme of his campaign has been stoking fear of unrest and promising “law & order” to anxious white suburbanites. The Republican National Convention highlighted the story of a white St. Louis couple who pointed their guns at Black Lives Matter protesters passing by their home. In one tweet directed at “the Suburban Housewives of America,” Trump said “Biden will destroy your neighborhood and your American dream; I will protect it!” In case the message wasn’t clear, his campaign sent out a text yesterday that read: “ANTIFA THUGS WILL RUIN THE SUBURBS!”
Tumblr media
Patience Zalanga for TIMEProtestors clash outside a county courthouse after the President departs Kenosha, Wis., on Sept. 1, 2020.
Kenosha County is a case study of whether this message can work. It’s full of suburbs and exurbs surrounding the main city, Kenosha, that was blighted after Blake’s shooting. Most of the windows downtown are boarded up and tagged with murals and graffiti, and the smell of smoke from burned buildings still hung in the air days after the violence subsided. The county went for Obama by 12 points in 2012 before Trump erased that deficit and barely eked out a win there in 2016; two years later, Democratic Governor Tony Evers won it by 4 points.
So is Trump’s strategy working? Polls paint a murky picture, and it varies by state. Take Pennsylvania: One Monmouth poll in early September showed the race tightening in Trump’s favor in swing and suburban districts in Pennsylvania, while a recent NBC/Marist poll showed Biden leading Trump by nearly 20 points among suburban voters there. A recent ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 80% of Americans were “very” or “somewhat” concerned with the protests, but not in a way that benefited the President: 55% said that Trump’s comments about the protests had made the situation worse, while 59% said Biden would do a better job handling the protests and 56% said Biden would do a better job “keeping me and my family safe.”
And on the ground, Trump’s bet on fear-mongering seems to have met limited success. In dozens of interviews in Kenosha and its surrounding suburbs in recent days, nearly every voter I spoke with agreed that the violent protests were unacceptable. Yet many suburban voters blamed Trump for inciting racial conflict.

“People here might be concerned about law and order, but they don’t want a President who’s stoking the fire; they don’t want him to pour on kerosene,” says Charlie Sykes, a longtime conservative radio host in Wisconsin and an anti-Trump Republican who is now editor-at-large of The Bulwark. “These really crude race based-appeals just don’t seem like they’re gonna resonate among suburban Wisconsin voters this year.”

Meanwhile, Biden’s denunciation of the violence and his refusal to adopt Black Lives Matter’s demands to defund the police have made it harder to paint him as soft on crime. “Rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting,” he said in an August 31 speech in the aftermath of Blake’s shooting, before adding: “Do I look to you like a radical socialist with a soft spot for rioters? Really?” (The Trump campaign has to get its story straight: before they were attacking Biden as soft on crime, they were attacking him as too tough on crime, slamming him as “the architect of mass incarceration.”)
But like nearly everything in Trump’s America, both Democrats and Republicans in Kenosha and the surrounding areas saw what they wanted to see in the shooting of Blake and the subsequent racial-justice protests. For Trump supporters, it reinforced the need for law and order; for Biden supporters, the need for new policing policy and national healing. Trump thought it would terrify white voters into coming back to his base; Biden thought it was inspire suburban voters to embrace his message of unity. It turned out to be just another Rorschach test for a tribal nation.

Supporters of the President said they credited him with ending the violence and voiced skepticism of the Black Lives Matter movement. “Why should Black lives matter any more than anybody else’s?” says JoAnn Clickner, 85, a Trump supporter in nearby Racine. “Miss Black America and Black this and Black that—just obey the law and do what you’re supposed to do.” Clickner says she supports the President because “we need a leader, a ruler who can handle things.”
“Mayhem and anarchy has been going on,” says Rhonda Dutton, a 61-year old retired carpenter who supports the President. “It’s very upsetting to see our town be destroyed for something that could have been easily avoided if you had just obeyed commands.”
But dismay at the damage done by protesters doesn’t necessarily translate into support for Trump. “I cried when I walked through downtown. I think the President is inciting a lot of this racist talk,” says Carole Mills, 75, a retired teacher, on her way out of a Dollar Tree in Kenosha. “There’s a lot of people who don’t like either one, but they’d prefer Biden over Trump.”

“The destruction of our beautiful old buildings has been disheartening,” adds Toni Detert, 63, a retired retail manager in Kenosha. Still, she says, Trump’s visit was “a political ploy,” and she plans to vote for Biden.
In fact, Rolando Morales appeared to be a rare specimen in these parts: the unlikely voter whose views may have been swayed by the events of the last few weeks. In more than 50 interviews, he was one of the only people who said he was considering changing his vote because of the events in Kenosha. “The only thing about Trump that’s positive is law and order. We need more of that,” he says.
Yet when pressed, it seemed like Morales was starting to make up his mind. Morales says he wants a President who’s “gonna pull humanity together.” In the end, he says, Biden will probably get his vote.
