Rare 350 Million-Year-Old Tree Fossils Has Scientists ‘Gobsmacked’
Rare tree fossils preserved with their leaves have an architecture unlike any plant known today and represent the earliest evidence of smaller trees growing beneath the forest canopy.
Trees are believed to have originated hundreds of millions of years ago. Ever since, evidence of these ancient plant sentinels has been in short supply.
Now, a new discovery of uniquely 3D tree fossils has opened a window into what the world was like when the planet’s early forests were beginning to evolve, expanding our understanding of the architecture of trees throughout Earth’s history.
Five tree fossils buried alive by an earthquake 350 million years ago were found in a quarry in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, according to a study published Friday in the journal Current Biology. The authors said these new and unusual fossil trees not only bear a surprising shape reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss illustration, they reveal clues about a period of life on Earth of which we know little.
“They are time capsules,” said Robert Gastaldo, a paleontologist and sedimentologist who led the study, “literally little windows into deep-time landscapes and ecosystems.”
Coauthors Olivia King and Matthew Stimson unearthed the first of the ancient trees in 2017 while doing fieldwork in a rock quarry in New Brunswick. One of the specimens they discovered is among a handful of cases in the entire plant fossil record — spanning more than 400 million years — in which a tree’s branches and crown leaves are still attached to its trunk.
Few tree fossils that date back to Earth’s earliest forests have ever been found, according to Gastaldo. Their discovery helps fill in some missing pieces of an incomplete fossil record.
“There are only five or six trees that we can document, at least in the Paleozoic, that were preserved with its crown intact,” said Gastaldo, a professor of geology at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Most ancient tree specimens are relatively small, he noted, and often discovered in the form of a fossilized trunk with a stump or root system attached. For his colleagues to find a preserved tree that could have been 15 feet tall in its maturity with an 18-foot diameter crown left the paleontologist “gobsmacked.”

Ancient earthquake burial
The researchers excavated the first fossil tree about seven years ago, but it took another few years before four more specimens of the same plant were found in close proximity to one another. Dubbed “Sanfordiacaulis,” the newly identified species was named in honor of Laurie Sanford, the owner of the quarry where the trees were unearthed.
The forms taken by these previously unknown 350 million-year-old plants look somewhat like a modern-day fern or palm, per the study, despite the fact that those tree species didn’t appear until 300 million years later. But while the tops of ferns or palms as we know them boast few leaves, the most complete specimen of the newly discovered fossils has more than 250 leaves preserved around its trunk, with each partially preserved leaf extending around 5.7 feet (1.7 meters).
That fossil is encased in a sandstone boulder and roughly the size of a small car, according to Stimson, an assistant curator of geology and paleontology at the New Brunswick Museum.
The unique fossilization of the cluster of trees is likely due to a “catastrophic” earthquake-induced landslide that took place in an ancient rift lake, he said.
“These trees were alive when the earthquake happened. They were buried very quickly, very rapidly after that, at the bottom of the lake, and then the lake (went) back to normal,” Stimson said.
Finding complete fossil trees is rare and much less common than finding a complete dinosaur, according to Peter Wilf, a professor of geosciences and paleobotanist at Pennsylvania State University who was not involved with the study. Wilf noted via email that the “unusual” new fossil tree was a relic of a time period from which there are almost no tree fossils.
“The new fossils are a milestone in our understanding of how early forest structure evolved, eventually leading to the complex rainforest architectures that support most of Earth’s living biodiversity,” Wilf added.
Tumblr media
‘Very Dr. Seuss’
To King, a research associate at the New Brunswick Museum who found the group of fossils, the Sanfordiacaulis would have looked like something plucked straight out of Dr. Seuss’ most popular works.
“You know in ‘The Lorax,’ the trees have these big pom-poms at the top and narrow trunks? These probably have a similar structure. You have this massive crown at the top, and then it does narrow and paper into this very small trunk,” King said. “It’s a very Dr. Seuss-looking tree. It’s a weird and wonderful idea of what this thing could look like.”
But the reign of the Sanfordiacaulis was short-lived, the researchers said. “We do not see this architecture of plant again,” Stimson said. He noted that it grew in the early Carboniferous, a time period at the end of the Paleozoic Era when plants and animals were diversifying as they started to make their way from water to land.
Much of evolution is experimental, with success often measured by a species’ versatility, or ability to adapt to many different places and conditions. The peculiar set of tree fossils presents proof of a “failed experiment of science and evolution,” Stimson added. “We’re really starting to paint that picture as to what life was like 350 million years ago.”
Looking forward
Fossils such as the Sanfordiacaulis are not just useful in helping humans understand how life changed in the past, they can help scientists figure out where life on our planet might be headed next.
The existence of this particular species suggests that trees of the period were starting to occupy different ecological niches beyond what was previously understood, according to the researchers behind its discovery.
Gastaldo sees this as an indication that plants — much like early invertebrates — were experimenting with how they adapted to the environment. The earthquake that likely led to the trees’ fossilization also offers new geological evidence of what may have been occurring in Earth’s systems at the same moment in time.
“This is really the first evidence we have of (a tree) that would be between what grows on the ground and what would tower way above the ground,” Gastaldo said. “What else was there?”

New Elite, Chapter 2
Was this supposed to be out last week? Yes. So... sorry. Mental health decided to be a bitch. So, I won't waste any more of your time and let you get on with the chapter.
The following week passed by in a blur, and before you knew it, Nellie was waking you up on the morning of your debutante. You take in a deep, shuddering breath and she draws the curtains back, letting in streams of sunlight. You didn’t feel ready, but that did not matter. Ready or not, you had to do this.
“What perfume would you like for today, miss?” Nellie asks as she bustles about. “I know it’s not something we usually use, but seeing as it’s such a special occasion, I don’t think your mother would object.”
“Rose,” you decide after little consideration. It was a comforting scent to you, and in no way scandalous, so your mother had no reason to disapprove. “But Nellie, isn’t it a little early to apply a scent? It’s only morning.”
“I’m going to iron your dress with it, miss,” she explains. “It’s mostly already finished, it won’t take long now, but we really want that scent to stick with you all night. You best be getting along to breakfast now, you know your mother doesn’t like it when you dawdle.” She tweaks your nose affectionately before dressing you for the morning. You don’t pay much attention to the attire she selects. You’ll be changed out soon enough anyway.
All throughout your meal, your mother prattles on and on about what you’re to do and how you’re to behave yet again, nearly causing you a headache.
“Remember, the first thing you’re to do is speak with Mr. and Mrs. Dix, and congratulate him on his election as governor,” she’s saying for the umpteenth time that week. As if you could forget. This whole part happened to the celebration for Mr. Dix being elected as governor, and it also happened to be the first major event for New York society after you turned eighteen. In old times, your family would have had to have hosted your debutante themselves, but such customs weren’t standard anymore. And according to your mother, you couldn’t have asked for a better event to come out at. All of New York society was sure to be there.
As far as you were concerned, however, you would have taken any other event. Even though this was a political outing, it would largely be attended bipartisan; it would be considered an insult to not come. Even Mr. Stimson, Mr. Dix’s opponent, was invited as a sign of good faith.
So in addition to everyone being there, half of the attendees would be unhappy. Unbeknownst to your mother, you had followed the election closely, being a secret champion of women’s suffrage. The election had been a tight one, from what you could gather from under your mother’s ever-watchful nose.
“After breakfast, I want you to practice the newest dance,” your mother says with a meaningful stare when you’re very nearly done.
“Oh, Mother… I’ve rehearsed it until my feet have bled,” you protest. You’re not exaggerating either; Nellie has had to take special care with the blisters that have formed on your feet from the endless dance lessons. “Can’t I have the morning to myself?”
She raises an eyebrow, and you know before she starts speaking that this simple gesture means all hope is lost for you. “Certainly not,” she sniffs. “Have I not impressed that this is the most important night of your life? You can never be too prepared. How would it look if nerves betrayed you and you forgot the steps? You must have them mastered beyond any chance of fault.”
You sigh, but say nothing further. It seemed that you were to be doomed to both a morning and an evening of pained feet. At this rate, you’d have arthritis before you reached thirty.
Thankfully, you manage to get through the morning without reopening any of your blisters, though the arches of your feet are throbbing. You rub them the entire time Nellie is putting the finishing touches on your dress, before your mother can come in.
But far too quickly, the sun starts to set, and that can only mean one thing. It’s time to start getting ready. You’d take a thousand days of sore feet to put this off, but that’s not an option. All you can do is take one last breath for strength before Nellie puts on the accursed corset.
Since making the finishing touches on your dress the previous week, getting dressed goes quickly enough, and then mercifully, you can sit while Nellie pins up your hair. This process does take some time, since you simply have so much hair to pin.
At least you didn’t have to wear one of the increasingly large hats your mother favored. Being unmarried, you could still show some of your hair. Nellie decorates it with a few pretty, and most importantly, not ostentatious, feathers.
You hardly recognize yourself when you’re finished being made up. You don’t appear quite so young as the first time you put on the dress, but instead you’re caught somewhere between youth and being grown. You don’t love it, but your mother is fawning over it, and of course it’s far too late to change.
“Milady, the buggy has arrived!” Nellie calls, spurring you into action. You pull your gloves and shawl on, then follow your mother to the foyer. “Tell me how it goes,” Nellie whispers just before you cross the threshold, and she closes the door, and your old life, behind you.
You take the footman’s offered hand as he helps you into the buggy, then he sits at the reins and you’re off. You’d told your mother that most people would be arriving in automobiles, but, ever the traditionalist, she’d insisted on doing it this way. Probably because it was cheaper.
However, it’s not a far distance. You only have to brave the New York winter for a matter of minutes. And when you do arrive, you’re far from the first ones, and true to your prediction, most of the transportation you see are indeed automobiles. Focusing on details like these helps keep your mind off of what’s about to take place.
But of course, the buggy stops, and the footman comes back around to help first you and then your mother down the steps. Ready or not, it’s time.
“Chin up,” your mother hisses as a final form of instructions before you follow her inside.
It’s not so much a different world; you’ve grown up with the elite of New York since birth, but always on the fringes due to your age. The room is a glittering white, only a few shades darker than your own gown. An orchestra is playing soft music in one corner, though it’s obvious that the dancing has not quite begun just yet. Supper was to happen first, and there are tables lined with gleaming plates, silverware, and stemware.
For the moment, however, the attendees are milling around, greeting each other. Mr. and Mrs. Dix are easy to spot in the center of the crowd as everyone is expected to make their way to them as soon as possible, and sure enough, it’s towards the two of them your mother steers you towards.
She finagles your way through the crowd expertly, managing to seem casual while constantly moving the both of you closer to her target. As soon as an opening presents itself, she plants you right in front of the Dixes, and she and Mrs. Dix greet each other like old friends, although to your knowledge they were merely acquaintances at best.
And then came the dreaded words out of her mouth. “I don’t believe you’ve met my daughter before?” she says as she gestures you forward.
You dip into a quick curtsey. “It’s lovely to meet the both of you. Congratulations on the results of your election, Mr. Dix,” you say with the quiet confidence that’s been drilled into you. Both of the Dixes regard you politely.
“Is this your first event of the season, dear?” Mrs. Dix asks you. You hope it’s only because she noticed the color of your dress and not because of any social ineptitude.
“Yes. I only turned eighteen a couple of weeks ago,” you explain, willing your cheeks not to become pink.
“Well, we’re honored to host your debutante,” Mrs. Dix says, and you hope she isn’t faking the warm smile on her face. It can be so difficult to tell in high society what is fake and what isn’t.
“Well, we won’t take up any more of your time at present; I’m sure you’re quite in demand this evening,” your mother laughs. “But I do hope we’ll have further opportunity to speak later.” You smile your own farewell-for-now to the Dixes before following your mother into the rest of the throng.
“Well done,” she whispers, and you feel an enormous sense of relief wash over you. “Now come. There’s several families I wish to speak to before supper is served–”
“Dot!” a voice calls out, making your mother stop in her tracks and also causing her to wince; you know she hates the nickname because of how informal it is. Nevertheless, she turns, only to find Mrs. Ryan, a woman who Mother thought scandalous for a number of reasons. She had originally been from a middle-class family when she married an Irish immigrant, and though they weren’t divorced, they were amicably separated and living different lives. You were quite sure her husband was not at the event tonight. He might not even be in the same country.
But the worst thing about Mrs. Ryan, at least according to your mother, is though she’d grown up middle-class, she was unbelievably rich now because her husband had discovered a wealth of oil a few years back. And that made the Ryans ‘New Money,’ a blight your mother could never forgive.
But, loathe as your mother was to admit it, Mrs. Ryan was part of society now, which meant your mother had to put on her best manners. She smiles at Mrs. Ryan, though you can tell the smile is far from genuine. “Matilda. How are you this evening?” she asks, her voice strained.
“Oh, just the same as always,” Mrs. Ryan laughs before she notices you. “This your daughter, Dot? My, you’ve grown up from the last time I saw you. You look a vision, dear. In fact, I’ve got someone who you should meet.”
She shouts again across the room, though you don’t quite catch the name. Your mother seems to, however, and judging by her reaction, she’s not at all pleased. Her face goes stark white, and she can’t keep up the fake smile any longer; it slides from her face like quicksilver.
But before you can do more than shoot her a covert questioning look, an extremely tall man makes his way over to the three of you. “This is Mr. Onceler,” Mrs. Ryan introduces, and suddenly your mother’s reaction makes sense. You knew who Mr. Onceler was. All of New York knew who he was. He had come from nothing until inventing and selling a fashion item, the thneed, which half the attendees, Mrs. Ryan included, were wearing.
But coming from nothing meant one thing, and it was the only thing that mattered to your mother. He was New Money, and your mother was terrified of New Money monopolizing your time and scaring other, ‘better’ prospects away.
Mr. Onceler, however, doesn’t look like he’s interested in taking up all of your time. Studying his face, he looks quite disinterested in being here at all. When Mrs. Ryan finishes her introductions and you give your hand to him as courtesy demanded, he only just barely brushes the back of your gloved hand with his lips, not looking at you once.
“Mr. Onceler’s just gotten back from upstate, where he’s built a new factory,” Mrs. Ryan says proudly, as if she’s listing off the achievements of a son instead of a mere acquaintance.
“I can’t take all of the credit for that, Matilda. Your husband was one of the people who convinced me to do it, Mr. Onceler says, and you can tell, despite his slightly dismissive tone, that he and Mrs. Ryan have genuine affection for each other. It could very well have been the case that she introduced him into the world of society. “And as much as I would love to stay and chat–”
“Yes, yes, go and talk about important things with important men, don’t stay here and gossip with us ladies,” Mrs. Ryan says with a wave of her hand. Needing no further invitation, Mr. Onceler leaves, barely inclining his head towards you and your mother as a farewell.
Mrs. Ryan turns to you. “What do you think, eh? Handsome, isn’t he? And he’s young too, only twenty. He’s the most eligible bachelor in the state right now.”
“But his manners!” your mother blurts out, though she can’t bring herself to raise her voice any higher than a whisper. It seems she couldn’t hold back any longer, even in the company of one she considered inferior like Mrs. Ryan. “I don’t think I’ve ever met a man so rude!”
Mrs. Ryan waves her hand impatiently again. “Come off it, Dot. He’s had all the cards stacked against him. He hasn’t had his money for a year yet, and he’s not even used to northern society as an outsider; he’s from Atlanta. It’s a wonder he’s doing this well at all. And manners matter less and less these days. Cash is the only thing that speaks, and trust me, he’s got plenty of that.” She gives the both of you a meaningful look. “I’d keep that in mind before immediately writing him off.” She gives you an extra look, one that you can’t quite read before saying, “Well, I expect I’ll see both of you later.” She grabs your hand. “You look effervescent, dear. You’re only young once. Enjoy your night.” With that, she takes her leave.
As soon as she’s out of earshot, your mother starts hissing in your ear. “The nerve of that awful woman!” she bemoans. “How dare she imply that my daughter can’t do any better than him? His manners were worse than hers! He barely acknowledged you at all–”
“I think that means he’s not interested in me, Mother,” you remind her as gently as you can. “We have nothing to worry about if he doesn’t like me. As you said, there are much better options.”
Miraculously, your mother actually manages to calm down. “Of course,” she murmurs, collecting herself again. “Of course. There’s no use worrying about his opinion of you. He’s new money. He’s not worth expending energy over.” You can’t help but wince as she says that. You very much hope no one else heard her. You’d never admit it to her, but there was nothing wrong in your eyes with New Money. Mrs. Ryan, for example, you actually liked very much for her bluntness. Your mother was just so old-fashioned, and had an inability to understand differing viewpoints. You’d learned this long ago, and didn’t bother arguing with her much over it. It was easier to pretend you agreed with her most of the time.
“Well, let’s get moving. There’s still people we need to speak with before supper,” Mother decides before whisking you back into the room. The next half-hour or so is filled with conversation much more suited to your mother’s preference–polite and removed. To you, it’s empty. Just vain people speaking of the same things over and over again.
You also can’t help but notice that everyone your mother speaks with is an old New York family, and that they either are or have a son that is an heir to a large family fortune. She pushes you in front of these single men, and to your slight dismay, you can tell that some are indeed interested in you, specifically in your last name. Several of these people felt the same way as your mother–that a family name was far more important than being a decent person.
Finally, after you don’t think you could stand another stiff introduction, you’re called to dinner. You know it will be more awful, forced conversation, but at least you won’t be shown around like a prized animal at a fair. You find your seats, and discover Mrs. Ryan is also at your table, which clearly displeases your mother.
You didn’t think she had too much reason to complain though. Also seated with you is the Hunte family, one of the most respected in New York. Their son and heir to the fortune, Thomas, was seated right across from you. He was quite a bit older than you, being nearly thirty, but at least he wasn’t a widower in his fifties. Your mother seemed almost hungry when she looked at him, and you would practically feel her willing the two of you together.
And for the moment, you think you’ve managed to make a good first impression. Though conversation flowed quite easily (to your slight shock) between all at the table, Thomas Hunte did make a point of speaking directly to you on a few occasions. And you were on your best behavior, not bringing up topics your mother forbade and directing the conversation back towards him, so that he could feel important. Men did like to feel important.
Just as the dessert course is beginning to come to an end, the orchestra starts playing tunes you’re familiar with; the dancing has clearly begun. You look up at Thomas, sure that he’ll invite you to dance, but his immediate attention has been captured by Mrs. Ryan, who has asked him a question. Before he’s free to speak with you, you feel a hand on your shoulder.
You turn, and, with no small amount of surprise, you find Mr. Onceler there. You're sure the shock must register on your face, and you can't even find any words to say, but he doesn't comment on that. “I was wondering if you would join me for the next dance?” he asks instead, without any sort of preamble.
To say you're flummoxed is an understatement, but the drilling of your manners mean they're able to return to you, even through your confusion. “Oh… yes, of course,” you murmur. Mother won't be happy, and sure enough, she's stone-faced when you glance at her. But what else can you do? It would be beyond rude, practically unthinkable, to refuse. One dance meant nothing. Everything would be fine.
So, you stand, take Mr. Onceler's proffered hand, and allow him to lead you to the other side of the ballroom.
A note on some of the characters:
The Hunte's are purely my invention. Mrs. Ryan, while fictional, is based on Molly Brown, who wasn't born into society but her husband became rich, and was always considered uncouth. John Dix, however, was real and was elected governor of New York in 1910.
Also, apparently Americans used the word buggy instead of carriage. I hate that very much.

The Moral Legacy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
By Prof Rodrigue Tremblay
Global Research, August 08, 2024
The New American Empire and Global Research 8 August 2010
[We repost this article by Prof. Rodrigue Tremblay in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima  and Nagasaki. First published by GR on August 8, 2010]
“We have discovered the most terrible bomb in the history of the world. It may be the fire destruction prophesied in the Euphrates Valley Era, after Noah and his fabulous Ark…. This weapon is to be used against Japan … [We] will use it so that military objectives and soldiers and sailors are the target and not women and children. Even if the Japs are savages, ruthless, merciless and fanatic, we as the leader of the world for the common welfare cannot drop that terrible bomb on the old capital or the new. …  The target will be a purely military one… It seems to be the most terrible thing ever discovered, but it can be made the most useful.” (Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), 33rd U.S. President, (Diary, July 25, 1945)
“The World will note that the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima a military base. That was because we wished in this first attack to avoid, insofar  as possible, the killing of civilians.” (Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), 33rd U.S. President, (radio speech to the Nation, August 9, 1945)
“.. In [July] 1945… Secretary of War [Henry L.] Stimson, visiting my headquarters in Germany, informed me that our government was preparing to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. I was one of those who felt that there were a number of cogent reasons to question the wisdom of such an act. …The Secretary, upon giving me the news of the successful bomb test in New Mexico, and of the plan for using it, asked for my reaction, apparently expecting a vigorous assent. …During his recitation of the relevant facts, I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives.
It was my belief that Japan was, at that very moment, seeking some way to surrender with a minimum loss of ‘face’. The Secretary was deeply perturbed by my attitude.” (General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe and 34th U.S. President from 1952 to 1960, (Mandate For Change, p. 380)
“Mechanized civilization has just reached the ultimate stage of barbarism. In a near future, we will have to choose between mass suicide and intelligent use of scientific conquests […] This can no longer be simply a prayer; it must become an order which goes upward from the peoples to the governments, an order to make a definitive choice between hell and reason.” (Albert Camus (1913-1960), French philosopher and author, August 8, 1945)
“As American Christians, we are deeply penitent for the irresponsible use already made of the atomic bomb. We are agreed that, whatever be one’s judgment of the war in principle, the surprise bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are morally indefensible.”(The American Federal Council of Churches‘ Report on Atomic Warfare and the Christian Faith, 1946)
“It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. ” – “The lethal possibilities of atomic warfare in the future are frightening. My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages.” (William Leahy, Chief of Staff to Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman (“I Was There”, p. 441)

F-16 fighters will bring better weapons and radar to the Ukrainian Air Force
There are negative points of the F-16 for Ukraine, but the positive points are greater.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/20/2023 - 17:00 in Military, War Zones
The F-16s will make Russian pilots think twice before entering Ukrainian airspace, say experts interviewed by Reuters for a detailed assessment of their impact on the war.
The F-16s from several European countries are now in training centers in Romania, Denmark and the USA and the first Ukrainian pilots, those who speak English fluently, will soon be in training. Much has been said about used fighters, which have become surplus as their previous owners re-equipmed with the F-35. They will help, but the military officers are apparently trying to explain the expectations.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Although it is faster and more agile than the 40-year-old MiG 29 and Su-27 now piloted by Ukrainians, the main benefit of the F-16 is in its nose. Its radar systems are much better than the old Russian hardware, giving pilots a much longer and clearer picture of the threat environment. The Russians, who pilot the newer Su-35 and MiG-31, are aware that they will be more visible to the Ukrainian F-16s and that this should keep them closer to home. Ukraine has been using ground-to-air missiles to keep fighters away, and the arrival of the F-16 will free them to go after cruise missiles and drones.
Tumblr media
To keep up with the sophisticated radar, the F-16 uses air-to-air sho-fir and forget missiles, where Ukraine's current equipment requires guidance from the aircraft to take the missiles to their target. This makes the aircraft vulnerable and greatly increases the number of wasted shots. The F-16 has also evolved into a multifunctional fighter air defense platform that can be used for air superiority and ground attack. Lockheed Martin has refused to detail how the Vipers bound for Ukraine will be configured.
Tumblr media
There are some deficiencies that may limit the implementation of F-16. The planes are relatively fragile and are not suitable for the pavement destroyed in the unimproved fields on which Ukraine depends heavily. With this large intake of debris, they are also vulnerable to FOD.
Tumblr media
Russian aircraft have secondary air intakes above the wings so that the main entrances can be closed for ground operations. "The F-16 is a precious aircraft, it is fragile," Kelly Grieco, a senior researcher at the Stimson Center, told Reuters. "It's an aircraft that needs a long runway and the runway is very flat. But they are in an environment where (Ukrainian pilots) have been performing distributed operations. ... This is not an aircraft that can do that."
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most important thing that the F-16 offers Ukraine is hope for the future. Although it can still get spare parts from other countries of the former Soviet Union, support for the old Russian planes will end and Western equipment is the only option for Ukraine, both in the short and long term. It is expected that as Ukrainian pilots get used to the simplified controls, ergonomic layouts and operations of the F-16 logical system, they will quickly adop the new ways of doing things.

Gabriel (Agreste): my grumpy old man! He is 10, and he sounds like he has been smoking for the last 40 years. Me and my housemate adopted him in 2021 and he is a sweet boy that is scared of his own shadow but is also a grump at the same time
Frankfurt (aka Frank): he is a northern blue tongue lizard, my sweet grumpy boy. my first reptile i had gotten. I rescued him from a terrible home in 2021 and he is a lot happier now even if he hates me lmao.

'This weekend’s anniversary of the end of World War II, coming at a time when we continue to talk heatedly about the film “Oppenheimer,” reminds me of how long I showed images of the Hiroshima mushroom cloud to introduce class lectures on wartime Japan. They were dramatic; they evoked power; they were horrific. And students loved them.
I could have used other images. I might have shown a photo of a man I met in 1979 at the Hiroshima bomb memorial. Standing with his daughter in front of thousands of peace cranes, he told me she was 34 but had the mind of an 8-year-old — because she was born on the day the bomb was dropped. Her mother died, and she survived.
Or I could have talked about Dr. Michihiko Hachiya, who saw a flash on the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, after a night’s work in a Hiroshima hospital. He jumped up to go outside and find what caused the flash. When he looked down, he saw that his clothes had vanished; he was naked.
But I preferred the cloud image because it attracted students.
In later years, my attraction to that image waned, however, as I saw how it over-simplified the bomb, capturing its power but not its tragedy. I largely stopped showing it.
After seeing “Oppenheimer,” I have become more certain than ever that we must begin looking at the bomb — at all nuclear weapons — in a more nuanced and honest way if our world is to remain livable.
When we hear the father of the atomic bomb say, “All war becomes unthinkable,” when we see him grapple with what he produced, we should be warned about the danger of accepting the easy-to-chew narratives that still shape our understanding of Hiroshima — and of nuclear weapons today.
The decision to drop the bomb was not, as President Harry Truman suggested, a simple one. Nor did it represent any consensus that 1 million American GIs would die if an invasion of Japan were necessary. Estimates of how many Americans would be killed in fighting on Japan’s mainland varied greatly in discussions about whether to use nuclear weapons, but most military experts then put the losses in the tens of thousands. The million figure became “truth” only when Secretary of War Henry Stimson introduced it in a 1947 Harper’s magazine article.
There also were disagreements about whether the bomb should be used at all. The debates were fierce, with Stimson expressing doubts and Secretary of State George Marshall opposing the use of nuclear weapons against civilians. Fleet Admiral William Leahy called them barbaric.
And there was sharp disagreement about whether atom bombs even were needed to make Japan surrender. Today’s historical consensus is that Japan would have surrendered by the end of 1945, regardless. After the war, President Dwight Eisenhower said he had argued against dropping atom bombs because Japan’s defeat already was assured. We already had killed enough Japanese with regular bombs — nearly 90,000 on a single March night in Tokyo, for example — to make continuation of the war next to impossible.
The decision to open the nuclear age was understandable. Wartime invites costs-be-damned thinking. But such thinking in this case unnecessarily opened the door to the possibilities that frightened Oppenheimer — possibilities that could quite literally end human civilization.
That being the case, we must look at the war-driven language that saturates our discussions of Europe and Asia today.
We continue to be told that Ukraine has no choice but to fight until the Russians are driven out yet hear almost nothing about the more honest and complicated truth: That the only way to avoid endlessly continuing deaths and destruction is through negotiations.
On the other side of the globe, our officials toss around confrontational language about China, labeling Xi Jinping a “dictator” and threatening to employ “all” military options, with no discussion of the devastation that would result if we stumbled into war with nuclear-armed China.
People are right to condemn Vladimir Putin’s aggression and Xi Jinping’s threats against Taiwan. But the short-sighted, war-fogged thinking that brought us Hiroshima still dominates our discussions of Ukraine and eastern Asia. This time, however, it is a world stocked not with two small bombs but 10,000 massive nuclear weapons.
One only wishes Oppenheimer had been right when he pronounced war unthinkable in a nuclear-armed world, a world that could be destroyed before climate change even gets its own chance to do so.'

The old Cross Keys hotel on the northeast corner of N. Water and E. Detroit Sts. is a simple, unassuming looking building. One would not readily believe it to be the oldest building on the oldest street in Milwaukee. The curved limestone slab over the second floor window puts the date of construction at 1853. No one would believe the Cross Keys' violent life either - several times it was nearly destroyed by fire; it has lost one of its original four stories, and it has sunk five feet into the marsh over which it was built. The Cross Keys has undergone a number of name changes - Stimson's Hotel, American House, Juneau House, Russell House to mention a few - but remains most familiar by its first name. The only original thing about the historic building, however, is the remains of its brick exterior. Photograph and information provided by the Milwaukee Public Library local history collection.

hard to say goodbye

A Jungwoo birthday special<3
Preview: Jungwoo help you realize that some things are worth the struggle.
•••
There are many things in life that you absolutely believe is a waste of time. For example, brewing your own coffee instead of getting it from your local starbucks, or laying in bed for more than five minutes after waking up when you could’ve been out and about. You value efficiency.
The same principle applies to your relationship matter, so you often—if not always—would drop everything and just bolt right out of it to save your ass the time and heartbreak at the first sign of things not working out. But upon meeting Jungwoo you’ve come to the realization that maybe you were just being skeptical. About a lot of things.
Jungwoo taught you that the extra 10 minutes it would take to grind your own coffee beans then pouring the hot water slowly in circular motion is worth it. Or the extra 15 minutes spent having a pillow talk in the morning would resulting you to be in a good mood for the better part of the day.
In other words, Jungwoo help you realize that some things are worth the struggle.
So, here you are. Laying down fully dressed in you pantsuit—all ready to go—next to your sleeping boyfriend. Your hands running through his hair, giving his scalp gentle scratch that make him smile in his sleep. Looking like a peaceful sleeping puppy. Making it hard to say goodbye.
The old you would’ve ended the relationship the minute you receive the email about your big promotion to New York. Knowing fully well that long distance relationship never worked. That it is a waste of time and energy, for both parties.
But thanks to Jungwoo, the first thing you did when you got the email was searching how long does the flight from your city to New York would take. Considering you’d be on it a few times a month. Gasping when the realization of how much you have and willing to change for Jungwoo hits.
You thought the goodbye would get easier the more times you had it. It doesn’t. Jungwoo makes it harder every time, making it feel like you die a little every single time.
Glancing at the alarm clock on his bedside table, you pull out your phone from your now wrinkled pantsuit, making a mental note to stop by your place for a quick change before going to the meeting as you order an uber.
Not wanting to waste anymore time, you lean in to kiss him. Waking him up.
“Good morning, love.” You breathe on his jaw.
Jungwoo starts to squirm, stretching his whole body before throwing his arms around you, pulling you into his embrace. “Good morning.” he sleepily grunts, kissing your temple. “Why do you have to be so great at everything you do and got placed in some big ass office so far away from me?” he whines.
You laugh, trying to shimmy yourself out of his grasp before your pantsuit look even more unpresentable.
It took you a good few minutes to finally free yourself from Jungwoo’s attack of affection. And when you finally stand beside his bed, his hands are reaching out to you, an attempt to pull you back in. Only to fall back into the mattress when you’re not budging. He closes his eyes and pretends to be asleep. Making you laugh.
Seeing your boyfriend laying shirtless on the bed, hair’s all messed up courtesy of you, your smile grow. You take a mental picture of the breathtaking view that is your boyfriend, knowing you will need it later.
Sensing your admiring gaze, Jungwoo chuckles. “Take a picture, won’t you? It’ll last longer.” handing you your phone from the bed.
You took the phone from his hand and slide the home screen to take a picture of Jungwoo. “Don’t mind if I do.” you say as the snapping sound of your camera fills the room.
Jungwoo suddenly sits up, grabbing his phone from the bedside table he smiles at you. “Okay, my turn.” he says pointing the camera at you.
You quickly throw your hands to cover his phone, “Babe, no. My clothes all ruined because of you.”
“Well, then take it off.” he throws you a suggestive smile. Making you whine even more. Definitely don’t need the mental picture of you both shirtless on the bed and everything that would follow after, when your uber is probably around the corner.
Missing a flight because of a prolonged goodbye is nothing new to you. But this time you really couldn’t afford it. The meeting this afternoon is something you’ve been preparing for for weeks. And nothing, not even your love for this puppy-eyed boyfriend of yours could keep you from that.
“Believe me, if I could stay, I would.” you reach for his hands to pull him out of bed. “My ubers gonna be here any minute now.”
When you finally manage to get your boyfriend dressed and out of the bedroom, he pulls you into a hug. “I don’t like this.” he murmurs to your hair.
“Do you think I do? The worst part of loving you is leaving.” you mumble to his chest. And he tightens his hug even more.
“I don’t want you to leave.” he mumbles.
“I don’t want to, but I have to. I already feel so lonely.” you sigh loudly. Burying you face even deeper on his chest.
“I wish I could be at two places at once. So the other one of me could just follow you around like a lost puppy.” he squeezes you, lifting you off the ground. Making you laugh for god knows how many times this morning.
The two of you stay glued to each other until your phone vibrates. “My uber’s here. Unfortunately.”
He helps you carry the small carry on filled with two days worth of clothes. Placing it on the trunk of the uber and say nonchalantly to the driver, “Please be careful. You’re carrying my whole world right here.” that resulting in unison scoff from both you and the uber driver.
“Don’t worry man, I gotchu, I gotchu.” the driver said, st-ill chuckling.
Embarrassed, you quickly kiss Jungwoo and climb inside the uber. “See you Friday.” you tell him quickly. Before waving at him as the car starts moving.
When Jungwoo’s finally out of sight, you can’t help but laugh at how sappy the goodbye was when the two of you will be reuniting in less than a week. But then again, Jungwoo seemed to keep pulling the best—or maybe the worst—in you.
Either way, you love it. You’d love everything the world has to offer as long as Jungwoo is in it.

Schuman's propaganda piece on China's covid policies is even more sinister than I thought. It's less about the effectiveness of the policies (which it begrudgingly admits), and more about maligning Xi Jinping. It goes to pains to paint Xi as Mao, and not in a good way.
Much like Mao, Xi’s mere comments can send officials scrambling. Last August, he gave a talk about “common prosperity,” or narrowing income disparities, and the term instantaneously became all the rage, plastered across newspapers while executives rushed to open corporate wallets for poor farmers and other charitable causes. But the slogan has yet to evolve into a thought-out policy framework, creating yet more uncertainty. Bert Hofman, the director of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore, told me in an email that “common prosperity” remained an “aspirational goal,” whereas “concrete measures are mostly still to be developed.”
In this way, Xi’s approach has taken on aspects of old, Maoist mass campaigns. Mao conceived the disastrous Great Leap Forward based on his conviction that China could catapult into the ranks of the advanced economies by sheer public effort alone. Workers and farmers just had to labor harder and longer, and keep the Communist faith. So, too, does Xi seem to believe that COVID can be overcome by national willpower. Having declared the battle with the virus a “people’s war,” Xi and his administration have characterized pandemic measures as an almost militaristic movement against an “invisible enemy,” which has required “tremendous sacrifice” and “solidarity and resilience” to achieve “victory.”
The aim seems to be painting him as dangerously unconstrained by the "pragmatic power sharing mechanisms" which are portrayed as responsible for China's rise. The article paints the governing body of the CCP as being sidelined in favor of unilateral control centralized in Xi, and that this is making China "unpredictable," a la hateful enemy of everything good, Russia.
“Xi has established a new model of the foreign-policy decision-making process that is focused on his sole authority,” Yun Sun, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, recently explained. “Xi, his strategic personality, and his foreign-policy vision are the fundamental origin of China’s foreign-policy behavior today,” and thus “the assertiveness and coerciveness manifested are the direct result of Xi’s political beliefs and the system he has designed to enforce his vision.” That means security analysts will now have to factor Xi’s personal ambitions and political calculations into their projections of Chinese global policy. For instance, claiming Taiwan has long been a top priority for Beijing. Now a case can be made that having one man holding the levers of Chinese power, not properly constrained by an administration packed with cronies, makes war over the island more likely—akin to Vladimir Putin’s grab for Ukraine.
The punchline is the best part though.
Yet from an American perspective, Xi’s concentration of power isn’t all downside. By marginalizing the technocrats and constraining policy debates, Xi may be undercutting China’s competitive edge in its contest with Washington. His insistence on zero COVID, erratic attitude toward the private sector, and hostile foreign policy are combining to sap the economy’s vitality, depress investor sentiment, alienate more countries, and isolate the Chinese from the world. None of that bodes well for China’s future as a great-power competitor.
Pure cope. In reality, the opposite is true. Washington's refusal to deal with the covid crisis not only undermines its own credibility, but is degrading its "competitive edge" in all sectors. I can't speak to what sort of real, material effect the covid shutdowns and policies are having on China's economy, but even if they are negatively impacting China negatively, those impacts are going to be much less than millions of dead people, and millions more adversely effected or outright crippled by the disease, not to mention the economic fallout that will come as the disease continues to mutate and evolve. US capital has decided that the economy must stay open no matter what, and if it holds to that course, then at this rate it will inevitably collapse when infections and reinfections produce so many dead and disabled people that doing so is physically impossible. The irony is that this outcome is made even more likely by Schuman's bullshit. By painting completely sensible policies like travel restrictions to states with unchecked viral pandemics as insane dictatorial fiats, he undermines the ability of other countries to make similarly rational decisions.
The whole thing is just sickening propaganda aimed at justifying regime change in China and US's suicidal covid policies. Schuman should be dragged out into the street and shot.

Spectrewaves Paranormal on a Paranormal Investigation at Stimson Hospital Xcam Captures
Spectrewaves Paranormal were at the Stimson Hospital, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan USA conducting a paranormal Investigation on the second floor in an area that used to be an elevator shaft, which has no longer has access to the top tower. We captured multiple figures on the Xcam, when suddenly our video capture stopped working. The last figure we captured on our POV cameras was a figure walking up stairs where stairs used to exist. We believe these entities use this area as some type of a portal.
