The Winter Carnival Shaina Tranquilino December 29, 2024

It was a cold December night when the Winter Carnival rolled into the sleepy town of Frosthaven. The townsfolk, bundled in scarves and wool coats, gathered at the edge of Main Street as the carnival caravan arrived. Each wagon seemed older than time itself, made of dark wood adorned with glowing runes that shimmered like frost under moonlight. The air smelled of pine and snow, but there was a strange sweetness to it, like caramelized sugar and the sharp tang of something... otherworldly.

Word of the carnival had spread days before its arrival, whispered among curious neighbors and excited children. Flyers had mysteriously appeared on doorsteps, written in curling silver ink:

"One Night Only: The Winter Carnival! Witness Wonders Beyond Imagination!"

By the time the gates opened at twilight, the carnival grounds were alive with flickering lanterns and swirling snow that seemed to move to the sound of invisible music.

Mina, a quiet 16-year-old who had always felt out of place in Frosthaven, wandered in alone. Her breath formed tiny clouds as she passed through the wrought-iron archway, its icicle-like spires glistening. Inside, the carnival was a maze of wonders. There were tents that changed colors depending on where you stood, stalls where performers juggled fire that burned blue, and pathways that seemed to stretch endlessly despite the small plot of land the carnival occupied.

She stopped at a booth labeled "Mirrors of Memory." A gaunt man with snow-white hair and eyes like shards of ice greeted her. "Step inside," he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. "See your past, your future, or what you might have been."

Curiosity tugged at her, and Mina entered. Inside, the mirrors did not reflect her as she was. In one, she saw herself as a little girl, laughing with her mother who had passed away years ago. In another, she was older, standing at the edge of a dark forest, holding a lantern that pulsed like a heartbeat. The final mirror showed something else entirely—a shadowy figure with glowing eyes standing behind her. She spun around, but no one was there.

Shaken, she stumbled out of the tent and into a crowd gathered around a carousel. The carved wooden animals were unlike anything she’d ever seen: ice wolves, flame-winged birds, and great antlered stags. But what truly set the carousel apart was the promise written on a sign above it:

"Ride to Where Your Heart Desires."

One by one, townsfolk climbed onto the creatures. A shy boy who rarely spoke in school mounted an ice wolf and vanished in a flurry of snow. An elderly woman rode a phoenix, her face lit with a youthful joy as she disappeared in a blaze of golden light. Mina hesitated but felt an irresistible pull. She climbed onto a silver stag with eyes like liquid stars.

The moment it began to move, the world around her blurred. Snowflakes swirled faster and faster until they became a storm, and then—silence. She found herself standing in a forest bathed in moonlight. The stag stood before her, no longer wooden but alive.

“This is where your heart seeks,” it said in a deep, resonant voice.

Mina looked around, realizing this was the forest she had seen in the mirror. In the distance, she saw a figure holding a lantern like her own. As she approached, the figure turned—it was herself, older and braver, her eyes filled with determination.

“You’re ready,” her future self said, handing her the lantern. It glowed with a warmth that spread through her chest. Suddenly, the storm returned, pulling her back to the carnival.

When she opened her eyes, she was standing at the edge of the carousel, the silver stag frozen once more. The carnival was still bustling, but Mina felt different—stronger, as though a piece of herself that had been missing was finally whole.

As the clock struck midnight, the carnival began to fade. The wagons packed themselves, the lanterns dimmed, and the performers vanished into the night. By morning, the grounds were empty, with no sign it had ever been there—except for Mina’s lantern, glowing faintly in her hands.

From that day on, the people of Frosthaven spoke of the Winter Carnival as if it were a dream. But Mina knew better. It had changed her, as it had others. And as she looked at the distant horizon, she wondered when it might return—and what new wonders it would bring.
