Thinking about âevermore,â as you do, and something struck me about it this afternoon.
One of the things I love about the song is its imagery. Itâs a song about the depths of grief and sadness (and depression), but instead of saying it explicitly, itâs all about conveying it with the mood. E.g. âGray November, Iâve been down since Julyâ = been in the pits of it for months, âMotion caption put me in a bad lightâ = freeze framing a bad time in your mind (or in the minds of others), âI replay my footsteps on each stepping stone, trying to find the one where I went wrongâ = mulling over your actions over and over again trying to figure out if itâs something you did that has led you here, what you could have done differently to prevent this from happening, etc. âWriting letters addressed to the fireâ = thinking of the million different ways you could have said something (or done something) but never being able to do anything about it, basically screaming into the void. And so on.
Youâve got all the imagery of being stranded alone in the winter cold, waves crashing, etc. Which on the surface lends itself to the âVictorian cabinâ mood of the folklore/evermore era that Taylor talks about in her speeches every night at her concerts, but obviously stands in for feeling lonely and alone and unbalanced, and fighting your way back to yourself after going through the depths of despair.
One of the curious parts Iâve been thinking of is that the verses and the chorus are very self-centered â not in a narcissistic way, but in the sense that itâs very much about the narratorâs feelings of loss and isolation. Then the bridge hits and in the cracks of light âI thought of you,â dreamed of you, etc. Because âyou were there,â and thatsâs when the story flips from insurmountable pain to the first rays of hope by the end of the song.
But the one part that really struck me today was, âAnd I was catching my breath, floors of a cabin creaking under my step,â specifically because sheâs talked so much about the fantasy cabin on tour. When I used to listen to the song, I loved the imagery (and sound) of that line, because sheâs finally on solid ground after being tossed and turned in the water, but in light of how sheâs talked about where her imagination took her in 2020, it also strikes me (intentional or not) as a metaphor for that whole uneasy period of the pandemic lockdowns. Taylor has talked about how the fantasy cabin sparked her imagination and set off this creative streak that hasnât really stopped since. I almost wonder if âfloors of a cabin creaking under my stepâ leading into âAnd I couldnât be sure, I had a feeling so peculiar, this pain wouldnât be for evermore,â can also be seen as, using this creative outlet (her music/the cabin) to process these feelings, and particularly in that point in time, to ground her and bring her back to herself. The creaking floors being the reminder that she will be whole once again, the metaphorical creaking in her mind being the spark of ideas leading to her most introspective work. âIt was real enough to get me through,â like getting lost in these fantasies was enough to get through the worst patch, and in the end, itâs what ended up bringing her back to life (metaphorically of course).
I donât necessarily think that was what the song set out to be, but given the narrative around the cabin in her mind etc., I just think itâs a neat coincidence at the very least that when she was feeling unmoored and âon waves out being tossed,â the metaphorical floors under her reminded her (and by her, I mean whoever the narrator was or will be) that the ground will be steady again under her, because it always will be when she goes back to doing what she loves.
Anyway. I love this song, why do you ask?
#Taylor swift#me thinking too hard about taylor lyrics#evermore#can you tell I kicked ass in English lol#look I know the song is (probably) about joe#but despite being a fan of the music for years I am a new online fine#*fan#and Iâm not used to specifically assigning each song to a person#I just listen to the music lol#ANYWAY#whoever the song was initially about sheâs clearly reassigning it#and probably towards her music/fans#so anyway

The majority of English students find themselves thinking in English; they find the language fascinating and call it the language of emotions. As a student who comes from a non-English background, you can easily get around with native speakers and master fluency in English speaking. But when it comes to writing and understanding the complexity of grammar, you might find yourself getting stuck. When it comes to English assignments, together with the Thought process and ideas, writing ability plays a major role. That's why students go for English assignment help providers to get proper feedback and work on their writing skills.

The Elite College Students Who Canât Read Books
Nicholas Dames has taught Literature Humanities, Columbia Universityâs required great-books course, since 1998. He loves the job, but it has changed. Over the past decade, students have become overwhelmed by the reading. College kids have never read everything theyâre assigned, of course, but this feels different. Damesâs students now seem bewildered by the thought of finishing multiple books a semester. His colleagues have noticed the same problem. Many students no longer arrive at collegeâeven at highly selective, elite collegesâprepared to read books.
This development puzzled Dames until one day during the fall 2022 semester, when a first-year student came to his office hours to share how challenging she had found the early assignments. Lit Hum often requires students to read a book, sometimes a very long and dense one, in just a week or two. But the student told Dames that, at her public high school, she had never been required to read an entire book. She had been assigned excerpts, poetry, and news articles, but not a single book cover to cover.
[...] Twenty years ago, Damesâs classes had no problem engaging in sophisticated discussions of Pride and Prejudice one week and Crime and Punishment the next. Now his students tell him up front that the reading load feels impossible. Itâs not just the frenetic pace; they struggle to attend to small details while keeping track of the overall plot.
No comprehensive data exist on this trend, but the majority of the 33 professors I spoke with relayed similar experiences. Many had discussed the change at faculty meetings and in conversations with fellow instructors. [...] Daniel Shore, the chair of Georgetownâs English department, told me that his students have trouble staying focused on even a sonnet.
Failing to complete a 14-line poem without succumbing to distraction suggests one familiar explanation for the decline in reading aptitude: smartphones. Teenagers are constantly tempted by their devices, which inhibits their preparation for the rigors of college courseworkâthen they get to college, and the distractions keep flowing. âItâs changed expectations about whatâs worthy of attention,â Daniel Willingham, a psychologist at UVA, told me. âBeing bored has become unnatural.â Reading books, even for pleasure, canât compete with TikTok, Instagram, YouTube. In 1976, about 40 percent of high-school seniors said they had read at least six books for fun in the previous year, compared with 11.5 percent who hadnât read any. By 2022, those percentages had flipped.
[...] Mike Szkolka, a teacher and an administrator who has spent almost two decades in Boston and New York schools, told me that excerpts have replaced books across grade levels. âThereâs no testing skill that can be related to ⊠Can you sit down and read Tolstoy?ââ he said. And if a skill is not easily measured, instructors and district leaders have little incentive to teach it. [...] The pandemic, which scrambled syllabi and moved coursework online, accelerated the shift away from teaching complete works.
[...] But itâs not clear that instructors can foster a love of reading by thinning out the syllabus. Some experts I spoke with attributed the decline of book reading to a shift in values rather than in skill sets. Students can still read books, they argueâtheyâre just choosing not to. Students today are far more concerned about their job prospects than they were in the past. Every year, they tell Howley that, despite enjoying what they learned in Lit Hum, they plan to instead get a degree in something more useful for their career.
[...] For years, Dames has asked his first-years about their favorite book. In the past, they cited books such as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Now, he says, almost half of them cite young-adult books. Rick Riordanâs Percy Jackson series seems to be a particular favorite.
