Album Review of the Week: Rebecca Black - Let Her Burn (2023) ☆☆☆☆☆
When I heard that Rebecca Black was coming out with new music, I was intrigued but cautious! The single art was kooky and crazy and a little off-putting, she also put out a 10th anniversary hyper-pop remix of "Friday" which was just amazing really. You have to check it out just once! Well anyway, when I heard that the full album was out, I hit play and was completely astounded! The songwriting is so vulnerable and honest, the instrumentation and melodies are gorgeous. This is one of my favorite albums of the year so far, for sure. The packaging on the vinyl is just fantastic as well, lots of photos, a poster and the colors on the record are absolutely gorgeous.
The debut album has a soft opening with Erase You which seems like a ballad at first until the drum and bass kicks in! I love the lyric "I'll let you play the villain, so I can sleep at night", my past self can definitely relate to that. This song is a bold yet vulnerable statement which is a great way to introduce a debut!
My favorite track, Destroy Me, has more of what I like to call "Powerpuff Girl drums". My husband, who quite enjoys drum and bass, hates that I call it that! The lyrics are practically spit in a very quick delivery during the chorus, antagonizing the listener to destroy and discard her, which of course seems to call back to the first time the public heard her name.
Misery Loves Company is a bit of a modern power ballad. The chorus is nearly angelic, it seems to float above the rest of the song with a pulsing nebulous melody and dreamy vocals.
Crumbs is another heavy hitter. "You can make a mess and I'll pick up the crumbs" seems to describe an unhealthy relationship that one just cannot get out of. "At your worst, you're still my best" can just cut right through you. The bridge/breakdown is absolutely phenomenal! Music is suffering from a great lack of bridges at all recently and this one is definitely my favorite of the year. Long live the bridge!!
Doe Eyed has a strong music box vibe. I'm not as much of a fan of the vocals on this one as other tracks, it's in a style that's just not really my taste. The melody and instrumentation is fantastic however!
Sick To My Stomach is another one that just punches you right in the gut! This song illustrates the struggle of your ex moving on with someone else before you meet someone. It is a really gorgeous ballad and with gut wrenching, honest lyrics.
What Am I Gonna Do is another major standout. I love everything about this one, really. The introductory instrumentation is a little on the creepy side and the whole melody and vocal delivery is mysteriously seductive.
Cry Hard Enough starts off slow again but then goes into this really cool "lowfi" kind of vibe with more vulnerable and relatable lyrics. This definitely reminds me of a past breakup that was really hard.
The last two songs on this album, Look At You and Performer, are still very good but they don't quite stand up to the rest of the tracks in my opinion! With such stiff competition, however, that is not to say they are bad at all. Just a little slow for my undivided attention.
I will say, though, that when I first heard this album I was very excited and loved it even though some tracks didn't really stick in my mind. When I got the vinyl that all changed! Having the physical album helps things stay in my mind in general, but this album definitely shot up as one of my favorites once I heard it in that format! For example, I thought Performer was quite a boring ballad, but then I heard it on vinyl and it's super dynamic!
