Advanced Variable Geo

Variable Geo certainly wasn’t a good fighting game. Like many adult games, it primarily existed to show off its naked female contestants, with the quality of the fighting action coming in at a distant second, not to mention the inherent ropiness of PC98 action games. Such games have a limited audience to their content, but the publishers must’ve felt the series had mass market appeal. Which is why later on the game underwent a reboot on various console systems as Advanced V.G., with questionable content heavily toned down or removed altogether, depending on the platform, making the V.G. series accessible to more players.

Releasing last week this is a collection of the classic Toaplan arcade shooters, Hellfire & Zero Wing. The DLC which is included with the retail version adds in the Arcade game Demon's World along with the Mega Drive and PC Engine CD versions of each game.

Our editor was playing it yesterday and has been enjoying it along with the other Toaplan collections. We should cover them at some point as well.

Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire (1995), Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna 2: Eien no Princess (1995), Cosmic Fantasy 2 (1991), all on the PC Engine CD. Screenshots took on the MiSTer FPGA's Turbo Duo core.

I can't get enough of the way PCECD developers used full-screen sprites synced to redbook audio to make cutscenes, instead of playing heavily-compressed FMVs like the Sega CD did. It gives off a very clean anime look that looks wonderful even today!
